Who doesn’t love a good DIY? Pinterest has long been my happy place, and I’ve always loved pouring over home design magazines. The beauty of a do-it-yourself approach is two-fold: there’s the obvious aesthetic pleasure a completed project brings and the pride that comes with knowing it was a product of your own ingenuity and skill. But with home products taking the brunt of shipping delays, DIY spring decor is as essential as it is a fun exercise in creativity.

Tasked with scouring social media for the best DIY spring decor, I happily (excitedly!) jumped into my assignment. A simple spin around my favorite design sites and accounts brought up countless creative solutions to the out-of-my-price-range wishlist toppers. (A sigh for this mirrored nightstand.) And a dive into decor hashtags led me to new and inspiring projects that have all been added to my May bucket list.

From surprisingly simple, floral-inspired centerpieces to mantel accents to personalized wall art, this roundup is full of inspiration to help bring your own personal touch home. Let’s get our hands dirty—and dive in.

12 DIY Spring Decor Projects to Spruce Up Your Space

DIY Checkerboard Tray

DIY Checkerboard Tray from SemiStories

The checkered trend isn’t letting up. And good news: if you’re not on board with spring’s push toward bright prints and vibrant hues, this simple DIY offers a neutral approach. The supplies are nothing special—and you likely have them on hand if you’ve done a home decor project in the past. Oven-bake clay, an X-acto knife, and Clear topcoat sealant are probably the hardest to source items on the list. Luckily, we have the internet and fast shipping is a thing.

DIY Upholstered Frames

DIY Upholstered Frames from Honestly WTF

Looking to brighten up family photos or your favorite prints? This easy DIY is a clever way to update your frames without swapping in new ones. Or, you can purchase a few cheap frames and make them one-of-a-kind. Measuring, cutting, and gluing fabric to your frames is all that’s asked of you. Consider it your excuse to invest in a jar of Mod Podge—you’ll find countless reasons to use it after wrapping up this project.

DIY Hanging Centerpiece With Greens and Spring Flowers

DIY Hanging Centerpiece With Greens and Spring Flowers from A Daily Something

Because you’ll be working with real plants in this project, I would save this DIY for when you’re hosting a spring gathering. It’s a simple, but special way to bring color and life to an otherwise minimalist table. Bonus: You don’t have to be a floral designer to make it happen. To quote the project creator herself: “The only skill you really need is to know how to cut wire and then twist it around a dowel!” From there, you have the creative freedom to make it your own.

Mirrored Side Tables

Mirrored Side Tables from A Beautiful Mess

My solution to the mirrored side table mentioned above. Admittedly, this project requires a bit more elbow grease, effort, and power tools than the DIYs above. But trust me: you’re up for the challenge. The step-by-step imagery and instructions are surprisingly easy to follow. And after you successfully use a power drill, you’ll find there’s nothing you can’t do.

DIY Decor Plywood Arch Mirror

DIY Plywood Arch Mirror from The Merry Thought

I’ve seen many a minimalist mirror advertised on Instagram, and while all look cute, I have reason to doubt the quality. Thankfully, with a small piece of plywood, a round mirror, and other easy-to-source tools, you can make one for yourself. Prop it up on your dressing table, desk, or nightstand as a beautiful and functional accessory.

DIY Footed Vanity Tray

DIY Footed Vanity Tray from Home Oh My

Y’all, I am obsessed (ob-SESSED!) with this DIY spring decor project. The modern tray serves as a convenient catch-all for any surface that sees a lot of traffic (i.e., your nightstand, dresser, or bathroom counter). It’s really just a matter of gluing and painting. Name an easier—or more stylish—organization solution for all the products we can’t help but hoard.

DIY Spring Shaped Throw Pillows

DIY Shaped Throw Pillows from The House That Lars Built

After years of convincing myself that today would be the day I would learn how to sew, I’ve finally done it. And thankfully, this skill helped me add a major pop of color to my living room. They say that swapping out your throw pillows is one of the fastest and most impactful ways to makeover a room. This project? All the proof you need.

DIY Wood Half Circle Shelves

Wood Half Circle Shelves from Paper & Stitch

Living in an apartment, I’ve always been on the hunt for creative ways to make the most of my space. Of course, adding shelves is my top priority. These whimsical half circle shelves are an easy introduction to working with wood. They’re a cute way to display simple bud vases or design a sweet vignette to add to an otherwise empty wall space.

DIY Clay Tray

DIY Clay Tray from SemiStories

If you want a DIY spring decor project that calls for a list of supplies three items long, here it is. Oven-bake clay, parchment paper, and a baking sheet are all you need. Convinced? I love how these add not only function but style to any dining table. Plus, they’d make just about the cutest handmade gift.

DIY Seersucker Tea Towels

DIY Seersucker Tea Towels from Frances et Moi

Seersucker is synonymous with endless sunny days and warm weather. To help transition your kitchen to spring, whip out a few of these three-step tea towels. I love the bright edges’ pop of vibrancy. These would look so sweet draped from a hook or over your oven handle.

Playroom Mural Spring Decor

Playroom Mural from Almost Makes Perfect

For parents and caregivers, bring a touch of whimsy to your children’s playroom with this special project. If you’re challenged with a blank wall that doesn’t seem to fit any artwork, go for an impactful DIY that your kids will treasure for years. While painting an accent wall or mural can feel daunting, this simple design is easy to complete. One look at this design blogger’s before pictures will have you ordering the paint asap.

DIY Basket Pendant Light

Basket Pendant Light from Sugar & Cloth

I’ve always loved the look of an accent pendant in a dining area. It’s such a beautiful way to add instant charm and intimacy to any nook. And while pendants can often be expensive, this genius project makes the most of my tendency to hoard woven baskets. (Just me?) Three supplies—your basket of choice, a semi-flush mount light kit, and heavy-duty cutting pliers—are all you need to bring this design hack home.

May is one of our favorite months—and not just because it’s Camille’s birthday. The days are filled with so many reasons to celebrate. I’m talking warm weather, gardening season, pool parties, and plenty of dining al fresco! No matter where you are, it seems that May is the month when things truly start to warm up (and stay warm). Spring is in full swing, and the promise of summer is on the horizon. We have a feeling this month is going to be a good one, but if you’re looking for things to do in May, don’t worry—we’ve got you.

There’s so much inspiration to be found in the month ahead. Flowers are blooming, the sun’s staying up longer, and the energy is positive and bright. So soak up the good vibes and scroll on for 32 things to do in May, (complete with margarita recipes). Get ready to welcome the month with open arms.

32 Things to Do in May to Recharge for Summer

1. Find the perfect present for Mom. Mother’s Day is coming up and while we have all of our brunch recipes bookmarked, finding the perfect present to share your love may be a bit more of a challenge. Luckily, we’ve rounded up our favorite gifts. From the perfect gift for salad lovers to skincare goodies she’ll use time and time again—dive in.

2. Get into summer baking. Yes, it’s a thing! And if you want to keep your oven off, try these no-bake lemon treats and popsicles you won’t believe are healthy.

3. Subscribe to a new magazine. If you’re trying to spend less time on social media, replace your habit with something inspiring. Is there anything more enjoyable than sipping on tea while leafing through your favorite design magazine? Definitely not.

4. Get lost in a good documentary. We know, we know—the colder months are when we should be binge-watching all our favorite shows and films, making way for plenty of time spent outdoors in summer. But, and stay with us here, what if there was a guide to inspiring, must-watch documentaries that you had to watch, right at your fingertips? Good news: there totally is. We’ve rounded up the most thought-provoking, awe-inspiring films to stream right now—right here.

5. Prioritize walking. It’s easy, accessible, and all it takes is a good pair of sneakers and opening the door. If you need convincing, The Mayo Clinic has shared an exhaustive list of all the many ways walking supports your mental and physical health. (More energy and less stress? We’ll take it.)

6. Make easy tweaks to transform your routine. When I started thinking about all the hours I spent scrolling on my phone as time I was taking away from myself, I dropped the habit then and there. I want to be pouring into myself, learning and growing every step of the way. If something doesn’t support that, I drop it. Reflect on your own habits and consider what might be stealing that time from your life.

7. Find your new favorite summer drink. When the sun hits just right and the temps are above 80 degrees, you can for sure catch me on a patio with an Aperol spritz in hand. It’s my go-to drink of the season and it’s oh-so-refreshing. But I’m always open to changing things up, and there’s no better way to welcome summer than with this recipe for Strawberry Rosé Sangria. It’s fruity, herby, and just the thing to serve at any outdoor gathering you host. (Psst… Simply ditch the Grand Marnier and swap in this non-alcoholic sparkling rosé for an easy, zero-ABV option.)

8. Read Emily Henry’s new book. Happy Place has officially dropped and we’ve already got our copies. I’m halfway through and think it’s her best. A true beach read to get you ready for the season.

Set out on a walk or an afternoon of exploration, searching for the small vignettes of wonderfully-composed, natural beauty.

9. Watch the Kentucky Derby. Can’t make it to Churchill Downs on May 6? Throw your own Derby party! Pimento cheese, hot brown sandwiches, and a Derby Pie, of course. Oh, and don’t forget the easiest Mint Julep.

10. Whip up a go-to summer salad. Salad season is in full swing and we couldn’t be happier to showcase the summer’s best produce. Go simple with this green salad, upgrade your fruit salad, or enjoy our flavorful twist on the classic pasta salad. Whatever you choose, prepare for a bright and satisfying meal.

11. Update your skincare routine for summer. Maybe you’re married to your 12-step skincare routine, but the switch to a new season is the perfect time to swap out a few of your tried-and-true products. While summer is synonymous with minimal make-up and the bronzed and bright glow-up we’re all craving, skin woes still remain. So whether you need to step up your exfoliation game or re-vamp your approach to retinol, check out our derm-approved guide to summer skincare here.

12. Mix up a batch of margaritas. Check out our round-up of the best margarita recipes in the world. You won’t be disappointed.

13. Get more sunlight in the morning. Set your circadian rhythm first thing and get your energy going. Try to stay off your phone for 30 minutes after waking up. This could be the perfect time to work a walk into your day…

14. Practice positive affirmations. These will change your life.

15. Learn to make a cheeseboard. Is there anything more dramatic or celebratory than a fruit, nut, and veggie-filled cheeseboard (with multiple cheeses, of course)? Answer: definitely not. Cheeseboards are the perfect centerpiece for any spring gathering or summer soirée. While they’re traditionally reserved for appetizers, there’s nothing stopping you from packing a board full of satisfying and savory components. Including a cheeseboard in your next dinner party menu? Equip yourself with our step-by-step secrets for a budget-friendly masterpiece.

With so much that’s in bloom and in season, there’s an abundance of opportunities to seek out moments that inspire you and leave you in awe.

16. Make a monthly playlist. Who doesn’t love a little background music to energize their everyday routines? We love doing this exercise as a way to set an intention for the month ahead. How do you want to feel? What do you want to bring into your life? Let those visions for yourself guide your selections.

17. If you’re not making your bed first thing, start! It’s the easiest way to feel accomplished immediately. Who doesn’t love that?

18. Take stock of your 2023 goals. How are you making progress toward the goals you set for yourself at the beginning of the year? Are there ways you can shift your routine to fall in alignment with your intentions? Are there goals that no longer resonate with you? Set aside time to re-evaluate your goals and make changes if necessary—to both your habits and the goals themselves.

19. Seek out moments of unexpected beauty. This is more of an intention than a to-do, but something we fully encourage nonetheless. With so much that’s in bloom and in season, there’s an abundance of opportunities to seek out moments that inspire you and leave you in awe. Set out on a walk or an afternoon of exploration, searching for the small vignettes of wonderfully-composed, natural beauty. A trio of trees positioned perfectly so or a grouping of gardenias that are fresh, abundant, and full. Whatever you find, whatever you seek out, spend a little time being present for the natural wonder it offers.

20. Plan a picnic. There’s no better time of year than the early summer to make picnic plans. Gather your guests, pick a venue (parks are my favorite), and make a menu. The beautiful thing about picnics is that it’s easy for everyone to pitch in. Assign a course or a dish to each guest and enjoy this easy, elegant entertaining solution.

21. Keep a time journal. So often, we find ourselves saying that we’re too busy to do what we really want with our lives. But have you ever kept track of the time you’ve spent zoning out in front of Netflix or hate-scrolling through your social feeds? Not great. Spend a few days reflecting with pen and paper on where your minutes and hours are going. Trust me, the experience is eye-opening.

22. Perfect the al fresco workday lunch. Our lemony Feta Salad With White Beans is exactly what we want to be munching on between the hours of noon and 2 p.m. It’s hearty, creamy, and just salty enough thanks to the blocks of feta tossed throughout. The whole thing can be thrown together in a matter of minutes—and consumed even faster. (Psst… if a classic lunchtime sammie is more your speed, The New York Times Cooking has you covered with the perfect tuna sandwich—with a crunchy twist.)

23. Take a class. A workout class, sewing class, programming class—anything! Now is the time to learn the skills you’ve always wanted to master. Sign up online via a program like Skillshare, research local gym options, or see what’s available through community colleges in your area. Truly, the options are endless.

24. Make a habit of buying yourself flowers. Every week, I buy myself a bouquet of seasonal flowers that I arrange in a pitcher in my bathroom. They bring me endless joy throughout the week and are a small way to show myself a little love. If you find the same joy in flowers, visit your farmer’s market or even Trader Joe’s to find a few fresh blooms that make you smile.

25. Shop sustainable swimwear. Gearing up for some summer swimming? Same. The good news is that there are plenty of brands designing and developing eco-friendly suits that are ideal for any adventure. Our favorites? Gigi C offers gorgeous, sporty swimwear with a touch of luxe. Summersalt has been credited with creating the perfect bathing suit. Oh, and don’t forget Everlane—their pieces may be minimalist, but they pack a whole lot of style.

Whatever you find, whatever you seek out, spend a little time being present for the natural wonder it offers.

26. Commit to one big meal a week. At least. When I lived in Paris, I loved Sunday lunches—dining with my whole host family at noon. It was a meal complete with a stunning main course, salad, cheese, and wine. Make note of the free time in your week. When does it make sense to sit down as a family, with your partner, or roommates and spend time prepping in the kitchen so that you’ll enjoy it, sans stress?

27. Skip the blow dryer. Summer is the season of air-dried hairstyles. Give your locks a little break and enjoy the healthy shine.

28. Hike your heart out. Winter hiking is totally a thing, and there’s definitely nothing better than finding yourself among the changing leaves in the fall. But there’s something about stepping outside when the temps finally allow it and soaking up all the good, spring-to-summer views. Pick out a few hikes you’d like to try in your local area, call up a friend, and make a date for a weekend or after-work walk.

29. Romanticize every moment of your life. There are countless ways to find and create beauty every day.

30. Go out for ice cream. Honestly, I’d take an ice cream date over happy hour any day. Go with a girlfriend or make it a date with your kiddos. It’s the little things.

31. Schedule a standing coffee date. My neighbor and I recently started taking weekly coffee runs/walks every Sunday morning. It’s a great time to connect, stretch my legs, and get out in the neighborhood. If there’s someone close by you’d like to see more of, shoot them a text and make it a weekly thing.

32. Remember: happiness is a skill—practice it. Joy isn’t simply something that happens to you. We have to look for the moments that fill us up and remind us of the magic in the world. Pay attention to the life taking place all around you and ask how you can appreciate its beauty all the more.

Fork your way to a fertile body.

Trying to conceive? If so, you’ve probably received plenty of (unsolicited) advice. Don’t exercise too hard! Remove all toxic chemicals from your house! Have sex every day once you period ends! The list goes on and on. Ultimately, what you should be doing to increase your chances of getting pregnant is unique to your lifestyle, health conditions, and circumstances. That said, one universal aspect—that often gets overlooked—is nutrition. In many ways, it can make or break your fertility. Said differently: what you eat can have a significant impact on your ability to conceive. With pregnancy in mind, we’re sharing all things nutrition for a fertile body, including the best foods for fertility.

How does nutrition impact fertility?

When it comes to boosting your fertility, nutrition is at the tip of the iceberg. After all, without adequate nutrients, too many inflammatory foods, and a blood sugar roller coaster, it’s that much more difficult for your body to conceive and nourish a growing embryo. In essence, nutrition plays a critical role in fertility. Food is medicine, and what’s on your plate has a profound effect on hormone regulation, ovulation, and the development of healthy eggs and sperm. Poor nutrition can lead to nutrient deficiencies, impacting both women and men.

The Correlation Between Nutrient Deficiencies and Fertility

Speaking of nutrient deficiencies, research shows that a lack of nutrients—such as protein, folic acid, iron, and vitamin D—can lead to menstrual irregularities, anovulation (absence of ovulation), and other reproductive problems in women. Additionally, fertility can be impaired by insulin resistance and high levels of inflammation. In turn, both of these can lead to health conditions, like PCOS. In men, a diet lacking in antioxidants, omega-3 fatty acids, and magnesium can impair sperm motility, quality, and quantity. This can lead to male infertility and decrease the chances of conception.

What is a healthy fertility diet?

On the other hand, consuming a healthy and balanced diet that includes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, quality protein, and healthy fats can improve fertility. As mentioned, nutrients such as folic acid, zinc, and vitamin E can improve sperm and egg quality, while omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants can improve hormone regulation. Below are a few general guidelines for a healthy fertility diet:

 1. Eat a variety of fruits and vegetables. Fruits and vegetables are rich in antioxidants, fiber, and other important nutrients that can improve fertility. Aim for at least five servings per day.
 2. Include healthy fats. Healthy fats—such as those found in fatty fish, avocado, nuts, and seeds—can improve hormone regulation. In fact, healthy fats are the building blocks for hormones! Avoid trans fats and limit saturated fats.
 3. Get enough protein. Protein is very important for the development of healthy eggs and sperm. Choose lean sources such as poultry, fish, beans, and lentils.
 4. Stay hydrated. Drinking enough water is important for overall health, but it can also improve cervical mucus production—which is key for conception.
 5. Avoid excessive alcohol, sugar, and caffeine. These substances can negatively impact fertility and should be avoided or limited.

The Importance of a Prenatal Vitamin

Before we dive into the best foods for fertility, let’s talk about your prenatal vitamin. Taking a high-quality prenatal vitamin before—and during—pregnancy is important for several reasons. First and foremost, it provides essential nutrients: folic acid, iron, and calcium. These are crucial for proper fetal development and can prevent birth defects and complications.

Secondly, prenatal vitamins address nutrient deficiencies. Nutrient deficiencies are very common, and they can impact fertility and pregnancy outcomes. Keep in mind that not all prenatal vitamins are created equal. Consult with your healthcare provider before taking any supplements (including prenatal vitamins) to ensure they are safe and appropriate for individual needs.

Egg Quality Matters

The simple truth: healthy eggs encourage healthy ovulation. And healthy ovulation contributes to a better chance of conceiving. For this reason—and more—egg quality matters. But more often than not, egg quality is totally glossed over. On a monthly basis, ovulation contributes to a normal cycle length and proper hormone production. Both of these things are necessary for a viable pregnancy. When it comes to fertility, high-quality eggs have the best chance of developing into an embryo, implanting in the uterus, and resulting in a successful pregnancy. In other words, when a woman’s eggs are genetically “normal,” a woman is more likely to conceive and carry to term.

Which nutrients improve egg quality?

As mentioned, female egg quality plays a vital role in overall menstrual health. Below are a few nutrients that can help improve egg quality.

Folate

Folate is a B vitamin that is essential for fetal development during pregnancy. It is also important for healthy egg development. Folate helps reduce the risk of birth defects such as neural tube defects, which occur in the first few weeks of pregnancy. Sources of folate include leafy greens, citrus fruits, and beans.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Not only do omega-3 fatty acids support healthy egg development, but they also help reduce inflammation in the body. Fatty fish—such as salmon, sardines, and mackerel—as well as chia seeds, flaxseeds, and walnuts contain omega-3 fatty acids.

Vitamin D

Vitamin D is essential for healthy bones and can also help improve egg quality. Good sources of vitamin D include fatty fish, egg yolks, and fortified dairy products. The body can also produce vitamin D when bare skin is exposed to sunlight.

Iron

Iron is important for healthy blood flow and can also help improve egg quality. Pastured red meat, organic poultry, wild-caught fish, beans, and leafy greens are rich in iron.

10 Foods to Eat for Fertility

Without further ado, below are 10 nutrient-dense foods to eat for fertility. Aim to incorporate these into a well-rounded, balanced diet.

 1. Leafy greens. Think—spinach, kale, and broccoli. These are rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals. Regularly eating leafy greens can improve ovarian function and encourage fertility.
 2. Berries. Blueberries, raspberries, and strawberries help improve blood flow to the reproductive system and promote healthy egg production. Additionally, they contain folate—an essential nutrient for fetal development during pregnancy.
 3. Fatty fish. Salmon, sardines, and mackerel all contain omega-3 fatty acids—the building blocks for healthy egg development. These healthy fats help promote blood flow to the reproductive organs and reduce inflammation in the body.
 4. Whole grains. 100% whole grains (organic and sprouted, when possible) are rich in fiber, vitamins, and minerals. Micronutrients, baby!
 5. Nuts and seeds. Nuts and seeds, such as almonds, cashews, sunflower seeds, and pumpkin seeds, are rich in vitamin E, which is essential for healthy egg production.
 6. Eggs. It may seem obvious, but eating eggs can actually improve egg quality. Eggs are rich in protein, which is essential for healthy egg development. They also contain choline, which is essential for fetal brain development during pregnancy.
 7. Avocado. Avocado is a nutrient-dense food that is rich in healthy fats, fiber, and vitamins. It contains folate, which is essential for fetal development. Avocado is also known to boost libido!
 8. Lean protein. Lean proteins, such as chicken, turkey, and fish are essential for healthy egg development. They are rich in amino acids, which are the building blocks of protein and are essential for the growth and development of eggs.
 9. Beans and lentils. Beans and legumes are rich in protein, complex carbohydrates, and fiber, which can help regulate insulin levels and improve fertility. They also contain iron, which is important for ovulatory fertility.
 10. Turmeric. Turmeric, a bright yellow spice, contains a compound called curcumin. And curcumin has antioxidant properties, which can protect against oxidative stress (that can harm sperm and eggs).

Foods to Limit for Egg Quality

To recap—a nutritious diet is foundational for reproductive health. Non-starchy vegetables, healthy fats, complex carbs, and lean protein can help improve overall fertility. Additionally, it’s helpful to minimize ultra-processed foods and inflammatory fats (i.e. canola oil). But with that in mind, deprivation isn’t the goal. It’s equally important to relish the foods you love. There’s room for a little bit of everything (including sweets!). Along with a consistent exercise routine, stress management, and getting adequate sleep, you can support your chances of conceiving.

There are so many things to love about summer: backyard barbecues, warm-weather activities, and longer days in the sun. But as a person with combination skin that leans on the oily side, I get the summer scaries at the thought of putting on makeup that will, by the end of the day, melt into a mess. Despite my lightweight summer lineup of skin tints and sheer coverage, my skin can’t seem to hold onto a look for dear life. And who wants to cake on the powder in the summer? That’s why the best primers for oily skin have become my go-to solution.

But of course, I always want to be working with the best of the best. And with new products releasing all the time, it’s important to do my research and try out what’s available. So, after lots of deep dives and scouring through skincare social media accounts, I gathered together some of the best primers for oily skin and put them to the test.

To discover which primers are actually worth the hype, I tested them based on:

 • Texture: What does it feel like?
 • Hold: How well does it hold makeup throughout the day/night?
 • Key Ingredients: What is in it? Does it contain other skincare ingredients I like?
 • Skin Type: Is it made for oily skin?
 • Size: How much bang you get for your buck

You won't want to miss this.

The post Here’s What’s Happening Over at Casa Zuma—And All the New Items I’m Obsessed With appeared first on Camille Styles.

]]>

It’s been awhile since I’ve shared an update about what’s happening over at Casa Zuma. The reason? Well, turns out that running a direct-to-consumer products brand while also running this website makes for a really busy schedule. It doesn’t leave as much time as I’d like for reflection—but so much has been happening behind the scenes that I had to pop in and share a few spring updates with you guys.

First, a quick recap of the last 5 months since launch—it’s been a whirlwind. I’ve met countless incredible makers and artists, packed hundreds of orders with our team, designed packaging, acted as product designer/chief marketing officer/customer service rep—it’s been a crazy busy time but so inspiring and fun. I dove in headfirst, and though it sometimes feels like a lot, I also feel like I’m right where I need to be.

Do we have it all figured out? Not even close—but my intention for this brand is to bring you guys the most special, inspiring, creative pieces that elevate your everyday. And that pursuit has meant that, at times, I’ve had to let go of perfection, knowing that we’ll keep dialing it in as we go. As with any new business, it’s required a lot of patience and learning to trust the process. One of the biggest challenges of working with handmade goods from countries around the world is that lead times can be long—we’re working directly with our artisans to design and develop new pieces that are exclusive to Casa Zuma, so the journey from concept to actually having the product in hand is a months-long process.

SO, the products in our spring collection are items I’ve been working on and waiting for for months, and I can’t wait to finally show you! Here are my top 5 picks from our spring collection. Head over to CasaZuma.com to shop them all today.

Found Dough Bowls

I’ve collected vintage wooden dough bowls myself for years, and they’re one of the items in my home you guys ask me about all the time. So, I’m thrilled to finally bring you these one-of-a-kind hand-carved dough bowls made of reclaimed wood. I use this as a catch-all for keys in the entryway, or I fill it with citrus for a simple centerpiece. This is the time to embrace a wabi-sabi aesthetic—every single one of these is different, so embrace the element of surprise!

Sharing Bowl (get on the waitlist!)

Our new ceramic serving bowl was inspired by the one I use almost every night on the dinner table for grains or roasted veggies, served family-style. Handmade in Los Angeles by our friends at LA Clay, it’s perfectly sized for sharing any side dish. These are really special with a beautiful speckling in the glaze that I just adore. They’re coming soon—so be sure to hit the “notify when available” button to be the first to shop.

Linen Table Throw in “Natural Sand”

Meet the newest color in our incredibly popular linen table throw: Natural Sand (aka my new favorite!) It’s ethically-made in Lithuania of heavyweight linen, and we designed it to toss casually over any-sized table. I usually embrace the linen’s natural wrinkles for a look that’s laid back and not at all fussy.

Solstice Mugs (get on the waitlist!)

Aaah I have been waiting to share our newest mug with you guys! Our first mug sold out incredibly fast, so I couldn’t be more excited to share the newest in our collection, The Solstice Mug. Thrown by hand in Los Angeles by our friends at LA Clay, this is the cozy, no-handle mug I reach for to start (or end) my day—it’s just perfect. I even use the large size as a pen holder on my desk! These are coming soon—so be sure to hit the “notify when available” button to be the first to shop.

Sabré Flatware in Ivory

Since you guys love our teak flatware as much as I do, I’ve been dying to introduce a new color to the collection—meet our new Ivory Sabré Flatware! These are made in France, and for those of you who can’t quite get on board with a wood-handle silverware set, this durable acrylic handle is for you. They come in a set of four (one full place setting), and embody the casual approach to setting the table that is so my vibe.

These 9 Drugstore Concealers Are Recommended By Our Editors—And They’re All Under $15 https://camillestyles.com/beauty/makeup/best-drugstore-undereye-concealers/ Sat, 29 Apr 2023 10:30:00 +0000 https://camillestyles.com/?p=231382

A cover up for all occasions.

The post These 9 Drugstore Concealers Are Recommended By Our Editors—And They’re All Under $15 appeared first on Camille Styles.

]]>

I have a decently healthy relationship with aging. I’m okay with a forehead wrinkle or two and even welcome the crinkled charm of crow’s feet. But I absolutely draw the line at dark undereye circles. I won’t leave the house without touching them up, an obsession that’s cost me a pretty penny in cover-up. So this year, to be a little kinder on my wallet, I vowed to discover the best drugstore undereye concealers available.

In addition to polling the Camille Styles team, I scoured the web for glowing reviews and ratings, ultimately landing on nine absolute bangers of undereye concealers—with four true standouts—priced mercifully under $15.

Go ahead, treat your eyes to something fairly priced.

How We Landed on the Best Undereye Concealers

I’m a makeup minimalist, but I take my concealer seriously. When I play it right, I can usually skip the foundation entirely. Because a good concealer should be able to literally cover it all—from redness and uneven skin tone to some light contouring—in addition to undereye bags.

My go-to concealer for a while has been the Brightening Concealer from Gee Beauty. After taking a master class from the founders (where I learned you should absolutely, despite popular belief, be putting concealer on your eyelids and inner eye corners), I was hooked on the luminous, vitamin-packed liquid. But at $38 a pop and with the rate I apply concealer, I was looking to pepper in a drugstore dupe to treat my dark circles.

Apart from my coworkers’ trusted recommendations, I purchased each product and gave them all a fair whirl on the ol’ eye area, aggressively judging their consistency, coverage, and creasing along the way.

The Best Drugstore Undereye Concealers in 2023

Every product is curated with care by our editors and we’ll always give an honest opinion, whether gifted or purchased ourselves. If you buy something through our links, we may earn a small commission at no cost to you.

Most Hydrating: NYX Photogenic Concealer Wand

This was really light and lovely. I also deeply appreciate how thin and precise the wand is (many of the wands in our roundup are almost comically large).

What’s to Love: My skin felt hydrated, I never had to worry about creasing, and the product blended seamlessly into my skin.

What’s Not: The NYX concealer is great for layering, but if you like full coverage, you’ll probably blow through this bottle quickly.

NYX Photogenic Concealer Wand

$5

Most Lightweight: e.l.f. Hydrating Camo Concealer

“Y’all, I thought I had left behind my e.l.f. products in high school, but this concealer gets the job done. While I love the more expensive picks in my medicine cabinet (shoutout to Rare Beauty and Wander Beauty), this affordable option gives me the same lightweight finish plus added hydration. Whereas other products in the past have dried out within an hour—highlighting my lack of sleep rather than concealing it—this pick works perfectly with my tinted moisturizer for an all-day, dewy finish.” — Isabelle, Managing Editor

$7

Best On-the-Go: Maybelline Instant Age Rewind

“This one is always packed in my purse and makeup bag for an on-the-go application. Not only does it hide dark circles, it’s super hydrating and the sponge application makes it apply so much more naturally and evenly distributed. I never feel like I’m wearing a concealer when I use this.” — Kelly, Contributing Editor

Maybelline Instant Age Rewind

$8.99

Best for Layering: Neutrogena Hydro Boost Hydrating Concealer

If you dig a matte finish, this is the concealer for you. It went on beautifully and would be so easy to layer or reapply throughout the day. I love it so much, I even included a picture of myself below (my right eye has been Neutrogena-ed).

What’s to Love: The finish is superb and I love the lipstick-like shape that makes it easy to apply on-the-go. An instant purse staple.

What’s Not: Given its name and its hyaluronic acid core, the Neutrogena concealer wasn’t nearly as hydrating as I would expect.

Sorry for the jump scare! This is me with no makeup—apart from old mascara and the Neutrogena concealer on the left eye in this picture.

Neutrogena Hydro Boost Hydrating Concealer

For Need Full-Coverage on Acne-Prone Skin: L’Oreal Paris Infallible Full Wear Concealer

A little goes a long way with this one. It’s full coverage to the max and isn’t going to go anywhere. L’Oreal’s concealer went on a little drier than I would have liked, but the product is designed for oily, acne-prone skin.

What’s to Love: The full-coverage concealer can cover everything you want in one easy swoop and would be a great option if you’re looking to skip the foundation.

What’s Not: I didn’t love the way it settled—it felt almost a little sticky. And given how the large wand swipes on at once, it can feel a bit like face paint.

L’Oreal Paris Infallible Full Wear Concealer

$6.39

For Full-Coverage That Also Hydrates: COVERGIRL TruBlend Undercover Concealer

I didn’t know it was possible, but I got a shade that was too light for my deeply pale skin. Now I know just how porcelain concealers can go. That being said, the consistency was beautiful, offering the same full coverage as the L’Oreal Infallible concealer with a bit more hydration.

What’s to Love: The coverage is killer and there was nary a crease in sight as the day went on.

What’s Not: The product is thick and the wand is huge, making it a little tougher to blend and be precise.

COVERGIRL TruBlend Undercover Concealer

$10.19

For Covering Acne: Makeup Revolution Conceal and Define

The thick, full-coverage product takes a bit of work to blend in, but it may be worth it for the dose of anti-inflammatory niacinamide you get with each drop.

What’s to Love: Covering up blemishes with concealer can feel like you’re doing more harm than good, but you can feel a little better thanks to Makeup Revolution’s niacinamide.

What’s Not: While it looks great, it can feel a little too matte (almost chalky) after sitting on the skin for a while.

Makeup Revolution Conceal & Define Concealer

$7

For Easy, Lightweight Coverage: Milani Conceal + Perfect

This dependable concealer gets the job done with ease, though it might go best with a bit of moisturizer first.

What’s to Love: It’s mixed with vitamin E and is cruelty-free.

What’s Not: There’s a bit of a paint-like smell going on here… based on some Amazon reviews, I know I’m not alone in thinking this.

Milani Conceal + Perfect Longwear Concealer

$9.24

For a Clean, Luxurious Feel: Catrice True Skin Concealer

This has a beautiful silky feel to it without being greasy. Unlike the Neutrogena stick, which I truly loved, I can actually feel the hyaluronic acid in this one.

What’s to Love: This swiped on so luxuriously. It’s hard to believe it’s just $7.

What’s Not: That being said, it also swipes on thick, and can take a bit of work to blend in.

Catrice | True Skin High Cover Concealer

$7

“The Ocean Is Essential”—Meleana Estes on the Art of Making Leis https://camillestyles.com/wellness/meleana-estes-routine/ Sat, 29 Apr 2023 10:00:00 +0000 https://camillestyles.com/?p=231032

Every day calls for a swim.

The post “The Ocean Is Essential”—Meleana Estes on the Art of Making Leis appeared first on Camille Styles.

]]>

They say physical appearance is what you notice first about a person. Their eyes, their hair color, or how tall they stand. We pretend that these facts, and how we interpret them, mean something. But there are others who instead capture us with their energy—their warmth and curiosity. Meleana Estes immediately pulls you in with her passion. Her love, interest, and excitement for the natural world is infectious. It’s Meleana’s connection to her family, her art, and to her native Hawai’i that weaves a narrative thread through her everyday rhythms and routines.

Meleana knows that nothing is created within a vacuum. Inspiration surrounds us, and it’s our responsibility to attune our perspective to the potential within everything we confront. It’s this understanding—the connection between and the potential within everything—that brought Meleana to her work as a stylist, lei expert, and author of the recently released book, Lei Aloha: Celebrating the Vibrant Flowers and Lei of Hawai‘i.

Meleana Estes Shares the Rituals That Inspire Her Creativity and Keep Her Close to Nature

Her book serves not just as an ode to the art of lei making, but as a love story to the culture surrounding it. It’s clear, from speaking with Meleana, that the beauty of lei surpasses its aesthetic hold. Layered within the native flowers are stories of her t?t?’s generosity, of moments where she would adorn Meleana and her friends in lei. There are the birthdays, surf contests, and other celebrations where lei are abundant. As Meleana shares, “it is woven into all parts of our lives.”

In our conversation, Meleana shares how she fuels her creative life—peppering her work with pauses for surfing, swimming, and treasured moments with family. She speaks about the essentials: why she needs to jump in the water before she touches her computer and why noticing the day’s “small beauties” is a practice integral to her work, her art, and her world. Dive in.

What’s the first thing you do each morning?

My morning ritual is a long cuddle session with my 10-year-old son. I have big goals every week to wake up earlier than him and stretch and do my breathing but it never seems to happen before he jumps in my bed. That time with him is so important to me and fleeting—any day he could be “too cool”!

Tell us about your life as a designer. What does a typical day look like?

I finally get to my routine after my son heads off to school. I start my day with a walk around Diamond Head, a lovely coastal walk near my house. If I’m planning to make lei that day, I’ll carry a pair of clippers and a bag with me so that I can pick materials as I walk. If the water is beautiful, I might jump in the ocean for a quick surf. I try to do this first thing before opening my computer.

It is a balance, tackling that list of to-do’s and giving my brain the space to feel creative and calm so I can notice the small beauties that inspire me in my world.

There are lots of emails to read through these days as I’m deep in promotion for my new book, Lei Aloha and I just launched a jewelry brand, HIE Heirlooms of Hawai’i. But, I do start to melt if I am at my computer for too long, so I break it up with creative pauses where I am able to dream up new projects or work on existing ones. These breaks can be color coordinating my hanging mu‘umu‘u collection or strolling down the street to pick some fallen coconut seed pods I saw on my walk for a table runner I plan to make. It is a balance, tackling that list of to-do’s and giving my brain the space to feel creative and calm so I can notice the small beauties that inspire me in my world.

You just released your book, Lei Aloha. What do you hope readers will take away from its pages?

I am so excited for Lei Aloha to be out in the world. It is a culmination of beautiful stories collected from treasured individuals in the lei community of Hawai’i and transporting photos into this unique part of our Hawaiian culture.

I hope people feel the Aloha (love) in which people in Hawai‘i share and receive lei, as it is woven into all parts of our lives. Lei is used to celebrate birthdays, surf contests, weddings, and even funerals. Sometimes there is no particular occasion but you feel inspired to make a lei because you see a certain coastal plant you don’t always get to use or your own trees are blooming. You are celebrating the joy of using these materials—and somehow, I find, the perfect lei recipient always shows up.

I hope people feel the Aloha (love) in which people in Hawai‘i share and receive lei, as it is woven into all parts of our lives.

It doesn’t matter if you make it yourself or pick one out from a local lei shop, it’s always an act of Aloha. The health of the practice relies on the health of our people and our environment. If Hawai‘i becomes overcrowded, we’ll lose space to grow our flowers. If our native forest is compromised with invasive species, we’ll lose materials that way, too. We touch upon these issues in Lei Aloha. So as much as I hope this book shares the beauty of lei, I hope it also highlights the fragility of these resources and the importance of the health of Hawai‘i as a state.

Your love of lei spans cultural and personal significance. Can you share how lei making connects you to Hawai‘i and your family?

I was born and raised in Hawai‘i. When I lived on the mainland for college in Boston and Fashion School in New York City, I still remained extremely rooted in Hawai‘i. My t?t? on my mom’s side is native Hawaiian. She was a renowned lei maker and is still remembered for the aloha in which she shared lei to not only her ‘ohana (my family), but to all of Hawai‘i. Her generosity was endless; my whole volleyball team would have beautiful head lei after important games. And after paddling races, she was on the beach with armfuls of lei hanging for my entire crew. Even when I moved out of the state, she always carefully packaged a box of lei to send to me and my roommates for my birthday.

I credit the importance of lei to me to her. She was also a musician and made sure I knew how to play a few songs on the ukulele and encouraged us to have at least one hula in our back pocket for when you get called up unexpectedly to dance at a l?‘au. While I loved spending time outside of Hawai‘i, I always knew that I had an extra layer of blessing being raised in a place with a strong culture. I wanted that for my life indefinitely.

My t?t? would make lei for all of us for a p?‘ina (party). There were lei po‘o for her six granddaughters and more for my mom and her four sister in-laws. There was tightly strung puakenikeni for her two grandsons, my dad, and her four sons. And if wasn’t our party, then there were always lei for the host or guest of honor. My whole family has taken this on, she instilled it in all of us. My sister and I always make sure the “important” person has a special head lei. And my Uncle Speedy and Aunty Polly never show up to a party without armfuls of freshly strung pua kenikeni. We are all, in our own way, carrying on her love of lei and sharing lei.

We are all, in our own way, carrying on her love of lei and sharing lei.

Your jewelry collection, HIE | Heirlooms of Hawai‘i, is “inspired by the women of Hawai‘i, past and present.” How does this intention manifest in your designs?

As children, my partner Noël and I always loved and admired both our own ‘ohana’s (family) bracelets along with favorites of aunties or older cousins. We grow up associating certain bracelet styles with women we love and admire. HIE was created to continue the tradition of this style of bangle being made and passed on through generations, as it had become less commonplace for our generation. We draw inspiration not only from the bangles that these women wore, but the strength and beauty they exude as well.

What’s something you’re committed to doing every single day, no matter what?

(Almost) every single day I jump in the ocean. Of course, there are days missed here and there, but whether I quickly submerge in my workout clothes after a walk or get in an evening surf with my son, the ocean is essential and cleansing for me. My dad instilled this in me. He would go for a quick exercise swim on his lunch breaks, and when he arrived home from work we would hop in the car for the quick five-minute drive down the hill to our local beach. We would joke that his gills needed water. But it passed on to my sister and me. It’s a reset. If things feel crazy, I can scream them under water to let go or just float on my back and take in the sky view. It centers me.

How does the design of your space reflect your priorities and goals?

Like any creative, the look and feel of my space affects my productivity. As someone who also loves to collect beautiful things, balancing the clutter is a challenge. I am so fortunate to have a cottage on our property where I can keep my colorful mu‘umu‘u collection, my vibrant textiles, my lauhala (woven) hats and where my big flower projects can explode. I have this open wall where I can hang fabric swatches, a recently-found vintage postcard I love and I always have the words to an ‘oli or chant in Hawaiian that we recite before gathering in our native forest hanging on the wall. It is a thank you for the plants, for the ‘?ina (land) and for their gifts. This chant focuses on lei, but it encompasses gratitude for all of our surroundings. When I look at this on my wall during hectic moments, I feel grounded in my work, the book and my intention to share lei, bracelets and whatever else I decide to design next with the world.

Are there any daily or weekly “chores” you always enjoy?

I love to weed plants! I find clearing a hillside of weeds and giving what you have planted room to breathe. My mom lives on Kaua‘i (where I grew up) on the same land as her three brothers. I grew up with big family yard work days, followed by ocean cool-off dips and pau hana (post-work) pupu (appetizer) potlucks out in the citrus orchard. Maybe it’s nostalgic, the feeling of a long day outside working together to take care of our land and the loving warmth of my family, but either way, it’s a chore that makes me smile.

Is there a scent you use to relax / energize / meditate?

This is a great question for a lei maker because the fragrance of the flowers and foliage is so much a part of the creation! There is something about the pua kenikeni flower that calms me. It takes me to the cool flowers of my t?t?’s garage where she would string lei for orders and to share with family and friends. Now I never throw away extra flowers after stringing lei. There are little bowls around the house, keeping that feeling of lei sharing close.

Does music play a part in your daily life?

Music is such a part of my life. I always have Spotify going. Music at home is a constant. I love Hawaiian music for dinnertime. My Uncles inherited my t?t?’s love of music and Hawaiian music played a big part in family parties. The steel guitar or the sound of a stand-up base brings that nostalgia of a family gathering and the warmth I felt there.

How do you keep yourself energized throughout the day?

Every day feels so busy that I barely have time to realize I am tired! To keep my focus, I take stretching breaks for my sore back. I truly I snack all day and love a big, lovely sit-down dinner. I am not sure if this is the best thing for metabolism and this and that, but I love to cook for my family. Small meals during the day (avocado toast, string cheese, apples, and way too many peanut butter pretzels) are my go-to’s!

Where do you turn for inspiration when you’re feeling creatively blocked?

When I am creatively blocked, it is usually because I have a big decision to make. Aside from happily thumbing through my collection of vintage photos and books, my creative block is usually a paralyzing decision I have to make. My brain bounces back and forth between creative mode to task-oriented mode probably at an unhealthy pace. But I have learned in the last year that I can not be productive in either mode if I have a pending decision weighing on me—be it the vibe for an upcoming photo shoot or hiring a new assistant. So, I try to check those boxes first which is really a challenge for me because I tend to avoid hard decisions. But I realize now how clearing those as fast as possible helps keep my brain on track to make room for those creative moments.

What do you do to prioritize health and wellness?

I feel lucky to have grown up with a mom who would take us to the playground to play as she ran laps on the field while keeping a watchful eye and a dad who would do stretching and (embarrassing at the time) the occasional jumping jack set during my day-long volleyball tournaments in high school. For them, exercise equated to mental health, not to weight loss. My dad was a psychiatrist and would take his patients on walks during their sessions. Blood flow and movement—walks, runs, surfing, yoga, pilates—these are essential for me. But I will say, I know that movement is not the whole picture for me anymore. Stillness is becoming more and more necessary for me to prioritize business goals. I can feel more acutely when I need to stop and sit and breathe or tap for five minutes to get to a calm place.

What’s the best career advice anyone ever gave you?

The best career advice anyone ever gave me came from a dear friend who has had an illustrious career in fashion. She said, “Just start. Mele, you are a perfectionist and have this beautiful grand picture that it is holding you back from just starting”.

I learned that I am my biggest roadblock. That is why I am SO proud of my book and HIE. They are two tangible items that have been in my mind for over 10 years. I cried when I got my first copy of Lei Aloha, I was astonished to have actually pulled it off. My co-author Jenny Fiedler and publishing team at Ten Speed Press are also to credit for this. There’s nothing like a hard deadline to get me to make decisions.

How would you describe your work/life balance?

My work has peaks and valleys. There can be huge photoshoots on a deadline with table runners and lei to make and then it’ll be quiet for weeks. I could not have pulled off my book without my husband knowing that there might be two days where I just need him to do all the drop-offs and pick-ups and run a flower errand for me. He is amazing. But on these hectic days, I always take the time to make a meal for us to sit with and read before bedtime. I try my best to be less distracted and stressed in these moments, and I am grateful my husband gives me this grace. He knows I am doing my best to be present even in those high peaks of work stress.

What’s the best spot in your house?

I love our cute back porch. It looks out to L?ahi or Diamond Head, this landmark mountain at the end of Waik?k? Beach, and is framed by majestic, vibrant green coconut trees. In the evenings, Diamond Head turns pink at sunset and the moon rises between the coco palms. It is so calming to sit there.

Name one fashion or self-care product you can’t live without:

I can’t live without a pareu, or sarong. They are beach cover-ups, sun protection, lei-making blankets, or a towel if you forgot one. And if you have to pop into a nice lunch from the beach, you can tie it around your neck and it becomes a lovely dress!

You need to unwind after a long day. What’s your go-to method?

I love to take a shower, put on something lovely and comfy, and start chopping—with a crisp glass of wine. Whether it is a simple pasta, a salad for just me, or even plating a small cheese platter because my husband is making dinner, closing the day with my family and sharing food and time together is a grounding priority for me. Kaiea sets the table, we light a candle, hold hands, say what we are grateful for in our day, and give a small thank you to whomever we feel is right that day.

What’s your favorite time of day and why?

I am a sunset-loving person. (I also never quite get up in time for sunrise.) I love the way the mountain walls take on an orange-pink glow, the clouds turn a lavender color, and that people pause to watch the sun sink into the ocean. Sometimes we are in the ocean as a family, sometimes on the sea wall, and sometimes in our backyard, but we always recognize that this change in the day is happening and notice something beautiful that marks it.

It's easy (and delicious!) being green.

There’s been a big push in recent years to eat seasonally, and it’s not hard to see why. Summer’s strawberries and winter’s leafy greens have so much more flavor (and nutrients!) than their out-of-season counterparts. While it’s true that you can find asparagus on grocery store shelves year round, this spring vegetable is technically only in season from late April to June. I’m admittedly late to the game and have only recently begun to appreciate asparagus’ amazing versatility. But when it comes down to it, it’s hard to find a dish that the addition of this green doesn’t make better—and the best asparagus recipes are all the proof you need.

From grilling skinny spears at the family barbecue to shaving plump asparagus stalks into salads, asparagus leaves you with plenty of room to experiment. When it comes down to it, you really can’t go wrong with this naturally delicious veg. Keep scrolling to see how many ways you can take asparagus from ordinary to extraordinary. Of course, if you want to keep things simple and streamlined, asparagus will never let you down. And I’d love to know in the comments—what’s your favorite way to cook asparagus?

The Best Asparagus Recipes to Make This Spring

Spring Potato Pizza with Asparagus and Burrata

Spring Potato Pizza with Asparagus and Burrata

Why We Love It: If you aren’t putting potatoes on your pizza, you’re doing it wrong. This is the perfect pizza for spring, with its mix of greens, crunch veg (asparagus!), and creamy, delicious burrata. It’s easy enough for a special weeknight meal and will be right at home at your Saturday night dinner party.

Hero Ingredient: Again, the potatoes bring the party. They lend sustenance to this pizza that’s perfectly balanced by those spring greens and asparagus. I mean, when are they ever a bad idea?

One Pot Parmesan Orzo

One Pot Parmesan Orzo

Why We Love It: Haven’t cooked with orzo yet? It’s time to get familiar. Contrary to popular belief, though it looks like rice, orzo is actually pasta. This cheesy, hearty one-pot meal is lightened up with the addition of seasonal veggies. In addition to asparagus, you have zucchini, leeks, peas, and kale to balance out all the heavy ream and parmesan.

Hero Ingredient: The freshest green peas, please.

Grilled Peach and Asparagus Salad with Spicy Pepitas, Cashew Mozzarella, and Goji Chipotle Dressing

Grilled Peach and Asparagus Salad with Spicy Pepitas, Cashew Mozzarella, and Goji Chipotle Dressing

Why We Love It: This salad is the definition of fresh. Sweet peaches, bright lemon peel, blanched asparagus, and creamy cashew mozzarella make a perfect lunch.

Hero Ingredient: Goji chipotle dressing is the ideal mix of sweet and spicy.

Big Green Immunity-Boosting Vegetable Soup

Big Green Immunity-Boosting Vegetable Soup

Why We Love It: We have a thing for soups at Camille Styles. They’re an easy (and delicious!) way to pack a ton of nutrients into one delicious bowl. Plus, of course, most recipes are a breeze to make. If you’ve never thought of asparagus as a veggie to add to your soup, think again. And be sure to try this deliciously simple (and endlessly versatile) take.

Hero Ingredient: Soaked cashews bring body and creamy goodness to this virtuous soup.

Spring Herbs and Roasted Potato Salad

Spring Herbs and Roasted Potato Salad

Why We Love It: This isn’t your grandmother’s potato salad (although we love a retro recipe). If you find yourself in a salad rut, working with what the season gives you is a good place to start. This salad packs plenty of bright flavor from the tahini-herb dressing and gets bulked up thanks to the baby Yukon gold potatoes. Consider yourself inspired.

Hero Ingredient: Mint, parsley, dill, chives—the herbs bring so much, it’s hard to pick a favorite.

Pesto Pasta Primavera

Pesto Pasta Primavera

Why We Love It: Nothing says spring quite like peas and asparagus. Paired with one of our favorite pasta shells, this recipe will take you straight to flavor town.

Hero Ingredient: Tahini is the surprising creamy centerpiece that ties this pasta together. Spoon up a plate and take this light pasta to the patio to enjoy with a chilled glass of white. It just screams spring.

Asparagus, Quinoa, & Rice Salad with Goat Cheese & Maple-Tahini Dressing

Asparagus, Quinoa, & Rice Salad with Goat Cheese & Maple-Tahini Dressing

Why We Love It: Black rice paired with crunchy almonds and asparagus spears is a textural match made in heaven. Drizzle with some good olive oil and add lemon juice for a zesty touch.

Hero Ingredient: Roasted and salted almonds bring all the crunchy texture.

Asparagus Gruyere Frittata

Asparagus Gruyere Frittata

Why We Love It: Frittatas are the easiest way to make the most of the season’s produce—and to clean out the vegetable crisper before anything goes bad. This simple six-ingredient dish pairs fresh asparagus with nutty gruyere for the perfect spring dinner. Pair with a green salad and a crisp glass of wine for the ideal weeknight meal.

Hero Ingredient: Mild and creamy, gruyere was made for frittatas.

Asparagus and Gruyère Tart

Asparagus and Gruyère Tart from What’s Gaby Cooking

Why We Love It: We’re all about sweet tarts, but this savory version has us rethinking them altogether. Try it and taste the difference for yourself. I guarantee you’ll be back for seconds.

Hero Ingredient: Store-bought puff pastry lets this tart come together in no time. It’s perfect for a quick appetizer, lunch, or light dinner.

Farro Salad with Grilled Asparagus

Farro Salad with Grilled Asparagus from Love & Lemons

Why We Love It: All of spring’s bounty, all in one dish. The creamy Dijon dressing takes it to the next level.

Hero Ingredient: Never doubt capers’ briny beauty. They’re the tart and salty hero of this salad. Sprinkle them on generously.

Lemony Shaved Fennel Asparagus Salad from The First Mess

Lemony Shaved Fennel Asparagus Salad from The First Mess

Why We Love It: This salad is proof of asparagus’ endless versatility. Fresh, thin wisps of asparagus and fennel are made extra hearty mixed in with farro, white beans, and ground pistachios. It makes for a lovely light lunch or works as a tasty side to any main dish you’re serving this spring.

Hero Ingredient: Bits of salty pistachios in every bite? Yes, please.

A beach bag essential.

I live in Los Angeles, so naturally most of my conversations begin with some quip about the weather. So far this year, where it’s rained more in LA than in Seattle, everyone in the city has been floundering. For months, plans were canceled, raincoats were purchased, and umbrellas were excavated out from the depth of our storage containers. We may have kept up with our SPF face routine, but the best sunscreen for our body wasn’t on anyone’s radar.

However, now that we’re finally getting some sun, we’re making the most of it. Going to the beach is like a sport in Los Angeles. Everyone has their favorite spot, and most of us have a beach bag packed and ready to go on any occasion. As a beauty editor, it won’t surprise anyone that mine contains a mini pouch filled with beach-ready skin and body care. Here’s what’s inside:

How to Find the Best Sunscreen for Your Body

When it comes to your face, you can pick between a thousand different formulas made for different skin tones and skin types. But when it comes to your body, most sunscreens seem to be sticky, streaky goops that smell like chemicals. No, thanks.

In my time around the block—or the beach, as it were—I’ve tried many body sunscreens. Some have made their way into my beach bag, others have never seen the light of day. And while I usually evaluate my body products based on touch and texture, I consulted a dermatologist to discover what I should really be looking for in the best sunscreen for body.

Dr. Caroline Robinson is a board-certified medical and cosmetic dermatologist, with subspecialty expertise in alopecia, preventative skincare, and ethnic skin dermatology. She is also the founder of Tone Dermatology.

“There are considerable differences in the products available now with many great options,” says Dr. Rogers. “I always tell my patients finding the right sunscreen is like finding the right pair of jeans; you have to try out a few, and it can take a while, but once you find the one you like, you will love it and want to wear it every day.”

My Criteria for Determining the Best Sunscreens

After our conversation, I established these criteria for the best body sunscreens:

 • Key Ingredients: What’s in it?
 • Type of protection: Is it a physical/mineral or chemical sunscreen?
 • SPF: What level of protection does it offer?
 • Size: How much do you get? And (important!) can you pack it in your carry-on?
 • Water Resistance: How long does it stay effective in the water?

Ready to dive into the best sunscreens? Read on to discover the products that offer the best protection —and that don’t feel icky while shielding your skin.

What are the most important factors to consider when selecting a sunscreen for the body?

I always recommend choosing sunscreen formulas that are non-comedogenic and free from fragrances, dyes, parabens, oil, or certain chemicals like oxybenzone. For daily use, use sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. On days when you are out in the sun for long periods of time, apply an SPF 50 or above.

What are the differences between chemical and physical sunscreens for the body?

To further explain, mineral sunscreen contains active ingredients like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide that sit on top of the skin’s surface to deflect and scatter harmful UV rays. Chemical sunscreens contain UVB- and UVA-absorbing chemicals that convert UV rays into heat through a chemical reaction, which then releases the heat.

What ingredients should we look for in sunscreens for the body?

Most drugstore sunscreens contain a combination of chemicals that provide reasonable UVA and UVB protection. While using these products is definitely better than not using anything, here’s the rub: these are chemicals our bodies absorb. Fortunately, they are well-studied and labeled by the FDA as non-toxic. And, despite the reports, they do not cause cancer and have not been shown to cause hormone disruption in humans.

Zinc provides the most comprehensive protection against Ultraviolet B (UVB) rays that cause sunburns and Ultraviolet A (UVA) rays that cause brown spots and wrinkles. It has a reputation for being thick and white, making people look ghost-like, but an increasing number of sunscreens with zinc are becoming more cosmetically elegant. And unlike the chemical sunscreen ingredients discussed above, zinc is a naturally occurring mineral, not absorbed by your body. Even the nano-sized particles are safe, as confirmed by recent studies. Titanium dioxide is another good physical sunscreen, but it only protects from UVB rays, so products need to have zinc even if they have titanium dioxide.

Are there any sunscreens for the body that are safe for sensitive skin?

If you have sensitive skin, I suggest opting for a mineral sunscreen as chemical sunscreens can sometimes irritate and exacerbate existing conditions. Oil-free sunscreens will be best for those with acne-prone skin. If you are going to be sweating or coming into contact with water, I recommend using a water-resistant sunscreen for longer-lasting protection.

How often should you apply sunscreen to your body, and how much should you use?

Mineral sunscreens immediately protect your skin upon contact, but chemical sunscreen should be applied at least half an hour before going out into the sun since it requires some time to absorb.

It’s best to reapply every hour to hour and a half if you are participating in activities that cause sunscreen to wear off like swimming or anything that prompts sweating. If just sitting in the sun without excessive sweating (not dermatologist recommended!), a good rule of thumb is to reapply every two hours.

What SPF level is best for body sunscreen?

Studies have shown that higher levels of SPF offer more protection than lower SPF, so you should use SPF 50 or above. The minimum SPF recommended by the American Academy of Dermatology is SPF 30.

The Best Sunscreen for the Body

You never know what you like until you’ve tried it. And I’ve tried a lot of different options—including some of the most viral sunscreens out there right now. But are they worth the hype? Sunscreen isn’t the most glamorous product on the market, so when people rave about one, I’ve generally found that it lives up to my expectations. Here are some of my favorites that I’ve tried, tested, and endlessly researched.

Every product is curated with care by our editors and we’ll always give an honest opinion, whether gifted or purchased ourselves. If you buy something through our links, we may earn a small commission at no cost to you.

Best Overall: Bask Suncare SPF 30 Lotion & Continuous Spray

The wear and tear on the packaging says it all: this duo is a staple in my beach bag. From the lotion’s creamy texture to the spray’s refreshing mist, this is a set that makes me excited to apply my daily sunscreen. Perfect for application and reapplication, it’s proof that the best sunscreen is the sunscreen you’ll actually wear.

Whenever I apply it around a group of friends, they perk up at the light coconut and vanilla scent. Invariably, they ask what sunscreen is that? and I respond by spraying the group with a cloud of my staple sunscreen. No gatekeeping here. It’s the brand I recommend to everyone.

 • Key Ingredients: Avobenzone, Homosalate, Octisalate, Octocrylene, Aloe, Cocoa Butter

Best Sunscreen Oil: Supergoop! Glow Oil

Summer is the season for glowy skin. I love slathering on silky body oil after the shower, deeply nourishing my skin while giving it an iridescent look. Sometimes, it feels disheartening to apply sunscreen and dull the effects of my body oil. No more! The Supergoop! Glow Oil glides on smooth and dries fast for a shine and shield that last all day. I wear this when I’m laying out by the pool or beach. While the formula is lightweight and soaks into the skin fast, the oil does transfer to clothes if you don’t let it dry for long enough. You’ve been warned.

 • Key Ingredients: Avobenzone, Homosalate, Octisalate, Octocrylene, Shea Butter, Coconut Oil
 • Type of Protection: Chemical
 • SPF: 50
 • Size: 5 fl oz
 • Water-Resistance: 80 minutes

Supergoop! Glow Oil

With a mix of chemical protectants and natural plant and seed oils, this sunscreen is both protective and nourishing. The spray bottle makes it easy to reapply for more shine and protection throughout the day.

Best Dry Oil Sunscreen: Cay Skin Isle Body Oil SPF 30

Founded by supermodel Winne Harlow, Cay Skin has burst onto the body care scene with a bang. And though it’s new to my arsenal, I already know it’ll be here for a long time. It’s a sumptuous blend of SPF with sea moss and squalane—buzzy body ingredients that I love in all my products. This body oil is no exception. Unlike the Supergoop! oil, this one does not transfer onto clothes and has more of a hydrating effect. This is my pick to wear every day since it absorbs into the skin so easily. It’s also not water-resistant, so I use my other sunscreens for more heavy-duty occasions like exercise or beach days.

 • Key Ingredients: Avobenzone, Homosalate, Octisalate, Octocrylene, Sea Moss, Squalane
 • Type of Protection: Chemical
 • SPF: 30
 • Size: 3.7 fl oz
 • Water-Resistance: None

Cay Skin Isle Body Oil

Skin-nourishing ingredients like sea moss, squalane, and other hydrating oils come together in this ultra-light body oil with a transfer-free texture and SPF 30 protection.

Best Texture: Vacation Classic Whip

If you want a sunscreen that you’re excited to incorporate into your morning routine, look no further. With its whipped cream-inspired packaging, it’s a whimsical way to start your morning. You won’t forget it, that’s for sure. And I’ve tried this one myself (as well as other sunscreens from the brand) so I can assure you: it’s not just a gimmick. Yes, it went viral on TikTok, but the actual sunscreen is a creamy, easy-to-apply texture. None of the stickiness you associate with the sweet treat that it’s inspired by. My only warning: keep this one on your shelf and out of your day bag. The spray nozzle is a little volatile—something I learned the hard way when it exploded in my bag. Definitely keep in a cool, dry place.

 • Key Ingredients: Homosalate, Octocrylene, Octisalate, Avobenzone, Coconut Oil, Aloe Vera, Vitamin E
 • Type of Protection: Chemical
 • SPF: 30
 • Size: 4 fl oz
 • Water-Resistance: 80 minutes

Vacation Classic Whip

Banana extract and coconut oil give this mousse its signature smell while aloe and its signature oil blend make it lightweight but moisturizing.

$22

Best Face and Body Sunscreen: Biossance Squalane + Zinc Sheer Mineral Sunscreen

Mineral sunscreens can be touch and go. No matter how long you rub them in, many of them leave an irritating white cast that feels sticky on your skin and ruins your beach photos. The first time I tried this sheer mineral sunscreen, I was immediately converted. In seconds, it disappears into your skin with no white cast—even on my dark skin. Thanks to Biossance’s signature squalane base, the formula is lightweight enough for the face and durable enough for the body. Due to its small packaging, I like using it on my face, and bringing it down to my décolletage and chest since those areas see the most sun.

 • Key Ingredients: Zinc Oxide, Squalane
 • Type of Protection: Physical
 • SPF: 30
 • Size: 1.7 fl oz
 • Water-Resistance: None

Biossance Squalane + Zinc Sheer Mineral Sunscreen

Zinc, a physical sun protectant, creates a barrier between your skin and the sun while squalane supports skin health in this sheer, invisible sunscreen.

$34

Best Gel: Kopari Sun Sheild Body Glow Gel

Somewhere between a lotion and an oil is a gel. If you’re seeking something iridescent, this Kopari gel shimmers when it catches the light to create a glowy effect while protecting your skin. It acts as a serum, sun protectant, and glow oil without any tackiness and residue buildup. It absorbs fast to prevent transfer and oiliness, making it sweat-free and perfect for oilier skin.

 • Key Ingredients: Avobenzone, Homosalate, Octisalate, Octocrylene
 • Type of Protection: Chemical
 • SPF: 50
 • Size: 5.1 fl oz
 • Water-Resistance: 40 minutes

Kopari Sun Sheild Body Glow Gel

Hydrate and glow with this shimmering sunscreen that absorbs fast and leaves behind an iridescent shine without any stickiness. Avocado and coconut oil also provide intense moisture.

Dermatologist Favorite: EltaMD UV Pure Broad-Spectrum SPF 47

I’m an Elta MD fan because, like many lovers of the brand, I had it recommended by a derm. But most people—myself included, until recently—grossly underappreciate its potential as a body sunscreen. Formulated for the face and body, it’s gentle and fuss-free. For sensitive skin, eczema, or easily irritated skin, this is a great pick.

 • Key Ingredients: Zinc Oxide, Titanium Dioxide, Vitamin C
 • Type of Protection: Physical
 • SPF: 47
 • Size: 4 fl oz
 • Water-Resistance: 80 minutes

EltaMD UV Pure Broad-Spectrum SPF 47

This dermatologist’s favorite for the face and body is a lightweight mineral sunscreen fortified with two different types of physical sun protectants, zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. Plus, vitamin C helps prevent signs of aging and protects from environmental damage.

$32

Best for Sensitive Skin: CeraVe Hydrating Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50 Body Lotion

You can’t go wrong with CeraVe. For anyone with sensitive skin, or just seeking a simple but effective sun solution, CeraVe’s mineral sunscreen physically shields your skin while deeply hydrating your skin barrier. Its ceramide-rich formula makes it a powerful moisturizer, while hyaluronic acid hydrates for all-day softness. Experience no irritation as this formula creates a protective barrier around your skin to reflect UVA and UVB rays.

 • Key Ingredients: Zinc Oxide, Titanium Dioxide, Hyaluronic Acid, Ceramides
 • Type of Protection: Physical
 • SPF: 50
 • Size: 5 fl oz
 • Water-Resistance: None

CeraVe Hydrating Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50 Body Lotion

Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide create a physical shield for your skin while skin-favorites hyaluronic acid and ceramides nourish and fortify your body’s skin barrier, making it a perfect solution for sensitive skin.

$18

Best Drugstore Sunscreen: Sun Bum Original SPF 50 Sunscreen Lotion

Approved by The Skin Cancer Foundation, this sunscreen is by beach bums, for beach bums. If you spend a lot of time in this sun, this creamy coverage offers hydration and protection. Vitamin E, a potent antioxidant, helps prevent premature aging and damage from environmental stressors. All this comes in one affordable package, lining the shelves at your local drugstore, waiting for you to make it a summer staple.

 • Key Ingredients: Avobenzone, Homosalate, Octisalate, Octocrylene, Vitamin E
 • Type of Protection: Chemical
 • SPF: 50
 • Size: 6 fl oz
 • Water-Resistance: 80 minutes

Sun Bum Original SPF 50 Sunscreen Lotion

Simple but effective, this sunscreen offers moisturizing sun care with antioxidant-rich vitamin E. Slather it on liberally for all-day SPF 50 sun protection.

$18

Best Body Sunscreen for Darker Skin Tones: Black Girl Sunscreen for Face and Body

The white cast on many body sunscreens is especially problematic for anyone with more melanated skin. For people with darker skin tones, physical sunscreens have historically been out of the question. We either have to deal with a super obvious white film or forgo sunscreen. (Perhaps this is what perpetuated the myth that melanin-rich skin doesn’t even need sunscreen.) But don’t believe it! Darker skin does need sun protection. And finally, brands like Black Girl Sunscreen are creating quality, hydrating products for the face and body that shield your skin without leaving any white residue behind.

 • Key Ingredients: Avobenzone, Homosalate, Octisalate, Octocrylene, Carrot Juice, Sun Flower Oil, Cacao
 • Type of Protection: Chemical
 • SPF: 30
 • Size: 3 fl oz
 • Water-Resistance: 80 minutes

Black Girl Sunscreen for Face and Body

This moisturizing sunscreen contains rich skincare ingredients like avocado, jojoba, and cacao to deeply nourish your skin and promote healing, softness, and even complexion. Meanwhile, carrot juice contains vitamin C to even breakouts and boost melanin, while sunflower oil calms inflammation from sunburn and irritation.

Choose a decor theme

Hear me out: I’m definitely not a fan of cheesy party themes. But it can really help your decor process if you come up with a simple concept to tie the elements together. Here are a few ideas for Mother’s Day table themes that are chic, not corny:

spring cheese board, casa zuma solstice mugs

Farmer’s market-inspired

Use fresh spring produce to decorate the table. An overflowing bowl of spring veggies, simple and sculptural artichoke hearts, or even cut citrus fruit can be a beautiful theme that ties it together.

Vintage vibes

Get inspired by her favorite decade and let it guide each element of your table design.

Pick a palette

A “theme” can be as simple as choosing a color combination and letting it guide every element of your table design, from food to flowers to place settings. I typically choose just two colors and use them throughout, for max impact with minimal effort.

Her favorite travel destination

Whether it’s Santa Fe, Paris, or anywhere with sun and sand, let her favorite getaway inspire the menu and decor.

Lay the foundation with linen and beautiful dinnerware

The quickest way to elevate any Mother’s Day table is to lay down a beautiful linen tablecloth and set the table with your prettiest dishes.

Here are my favorite products for setting the Mother’s Day table:

mother's day table decorations, spring table, camille's backyard, casa zuma pitcher

Blanco Stoneware Pitcher

Every table needs a simple white pitcher, and this one is sized perfectly for water, cocktails, lemonade—it’s the versatile pitcher you’ll reach for all the time. I love the handcrafted nature of this pitcher, as the unique variations make it feel really special.

spring cheese board, casa zuma solstice mugs, recycled tumblers, outdoor entertaining ideas

Recycled Glass Tumbler

These handblown recycled glasses elevate anything you drink from them. Made in Oaxaca, these tumblers are dishwasher safe and super durable, and lend a relaxed, organic vibe to the Mother’s Day table. Sized perfectly for water, wine, or cocktails, I also love to fill them with votive candles or small blooms as a simple centerpiece.

Canyon Dinner Plates

These oversized stoneware dinner plates are made in Mexico, and their neutral palette and organic shape make them feel versatile enough for any occasion, but are especially perfect for setting the Mother’s Day table. Made of high-temperature glazed ceramic, this is dinnerware that you’ll keep forever—and I love that it’s dishwasher-safe.

mother's day table decorations, spring table, camille's backyard

Linen Table Throw

This casual 100% linen tablecloth adds texture and warmth to the Mother’s Day table. These are made in Lithuania, and the square size makes it versatile enough to use on square, round, or rectangular-shaped tables. It’s machine-washable, and I tend to embrace the linen’s natural wrinkles for a look that’s (perfectly) imperfect.

Creative Mother’s Day centerpiece ideas

When it comes to Mother’s Day table decorations, a beautiful centerpiece is usually in the mix—but it doesn’t have to be pricey or elaborate. Here are a few of my favorite simple centerpiece ideas for any spring gathering:

Fill a vase with daisies or chamomile flowers.

These inexpensive blooms can be found at just about any grocery store—I usually grab them in Trader Joe’s floral section. They’re happy, timeless, and instantly make any table feel bright and spring-y.

how to set the spring table, artichoke centerpiece, mother's day table decorations ideas

Decorate with seasonal produce.

I love this alternative to a traditional floral centerpiece. It’s simple, affordable, and takes zero floral arranging skills. Plus, you can eat the produce when it’s done serving its decor purpose, making it a zero-waste solution.

how to set the spring table, lemon centerpiece, mother's day table decorations ideas

Fill a bowl with lemons

This easy breezy centerpiece is created from ingredients you probably have from the grocery store! Just fill a pretty bowl with lemons, limes, or any other citrus fruit. Tuck in a few herb sprigs for a pretty touch of green.

Spring Tabletop with Citronella Candle

Add a few votives for sparkle.

Nothing beats the magical glow and flattering light of candles, so even for a daytime gathering, I love to scatter a few votive candles down the center of the table as a final touch.

how to set the spring table, photo place setting, mother's day table decorations ideas

Unique ideas for Mother’s Day place settings

Now that you’ve got the tablecloth on and the centerpiece set, it’s time to add a special touch to each place setting. Here are some simple and budget-friendly ideas to add a decorative twist to each place.

spring cheese board, casa zuma solstice mugs, handmade ceramic dinner plates

Tie a knot with your linen napkin

Elaborate napkin folds are a “no” for me, but I love the carefree look of a simple linen napkin, knotted and placed loosely on top of each plate.

how to set the spring table, flower place setting, mother's day table decorations ideas

Tuck in some fresh herbs or flowers

It doesn’t get simpler than adding a sprig or a small bunch of fresh herbs to each place setting. I like to use the woodier herbs for this, like rosemary, thyme, oregano, and sage. Bonus points for making the table smell delicious!

how to set the spring table, succulent place setting, mother's day table decorations ideas

Add a potted succulent

This cute idea for setting the Mother’s Day table provides a place setting and party favor in one. Just pickup some tiny succulent plants from your local nursery, add them to a small terra cotta pot or a teacup, and place on top of each napkin. Guests can take them home at the end of the gathering as a lovely reminder of the day.

how to set the spring table, flower place setting, mother's day table decorations ideas

Take a walk down memory lane

Print out a few favorite photos of your mom (or any women of honor in attendance) and scatter them around the table, or place on top of each napkin. It feels so personal, and is a great conversation starter to inspire walks down memory lane.

how to set the spring table, daisy place setting, mother's day table decorations ideas

Add place cards

Although by no means required, a simple handwritten place card is a simple way to add a thoughtful touch to each setting. I especially love a place card for larger gatherings, as it removes any confusion about where to sit, and allows me to be intentional with who I sit next to one another.

how to set the spring table, herb party favor place setting, mother's day table decorations ideas

Leave a sweet memento

Stock up on inexpensive muslin or linen bags from Etsy, then tuck in something special for each guest. I filled these with herb-infused bath salts, to inspire a moment of self-care.

Which Probiotics Actually Boost Gut Health? An MD Explains https://camillestyles.com/wellness/best-probiotics-for-women/ Thu, 27 Apr 2023 10:30:00 +0000 https://camillestyles.com/?p=231423

Going beyond the gut.

The post Which Probiotics Actually Boost Gut Health? An MD Explains appeared first on Camille Styles.

]]>

As someone deeply steeped in the wellness space, probiotics are one of the few things that still remain a mystery. Lymphatic drainage? Got it. Balancing my blood sugar? You bet. I’ve even cracked the code on the perfect proportions of protein in my diet. But when it comes to understanding the best probiotics for women, I still find myself with a good many questions.

Through influencer testimonials and splashy ads, you’ve likely heard the ever-ambiguous touting of “gut health” thrown around. But… what does that actually mean? And does it go beyond the occasional (or not-so) bloating episode that all the “hot” girls claim to experience online?

With all these questions flitting about, it was clearly time for an expert to set the record straight for me. Because while I can feel the benefit of taking my favorite probiotics twice a day, every day, I was craving some clarity as to what was actually happening in my body that left me feeling so good.

The Best Probiotics for Women: An Expert’s Insight

As it turns out, the benefits of probiotics for women go way beyond the gut. For answers and insights, I spoke with Dr. Barry Peskin, obstetrician-gynecologist and Medical Advisor for Happy V. With everything from increasing fertility to improving skin, probiotics are worth the hype. Below, we get into the nitty-gritty of all things probiotics for women. From who should take them to side effects to understanding the difference among prebiotics, probiotics, and postbiotics (you know you’re curious)—consider this your one-stop shop to all things probiotics.

And keep scrolling to read which probiotics our editors prefer. We’re sharing the pros and cons of our favorite brands, and we’re not shying away from sharing our true experiences. Trust: there’s no holding back.

Dr. Barry Peskin

 • MD & Gynecology Specialist

Dr. Barry Peskin is an obstetrician-gynecologist in Coral Springs, Florida and is affiliated with Cleveland Clinic Hospital. He completed his obstetrics and gynecology residency at Hillbrow Hospital in Johannesburg, and an obstetrics and gynecology residency, including one year as Chief Resident, at Mt. Sinai Medical Center in Cleveland. He received his medical degree from University of the Witwatersrand and has been in practice for more than 20 years.

What are the benefits of probiotics? How do they support women’s health specifically?

Probiotics are supplements that contain some of the types of good bacteria that live and thrive in your bowel. They’re important for women for several reasons. They can help to:

Improve gut health. Probiotics can help keep the gut microbiome healthy, which can improve digestion, reduce bloating and gas, and boost the immune system.

Improve vaginal health. Probiotics can help to prevent yeast infections, bacterial vaginosis, and other vaginal infections.

Increase fertility. Probiotics may help to increase fertility by improving the health of the uterus and fallopian tubes.

Reduce the risk of autoimmune diseases. Probiotics may help reduce the risk of autoimmune diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis and lupus. Women are two to six times more likely to experience irritable bowel syndrome than men, with inflammatory bowel disease being diagnosed at a rate of 2:1 in women compared with men.

Improve skin health. Probiotics may help to improve skin health by reducing inflammation and acne.

Increase energy levels. Probiotics may help to increase energy levels by improving digestion and nutrient absorption.

Reduce stress levels. Probiotics may help to reduce stress levels by reducing cortisol levels.

Does everyone need to be taking a probiotic?

Not everyone needs to be taking a probiotic. Probiotics are beneficial bacteria that can be found in some foods and supplements. They can help to improve gut health and vaginal health, but they are not necessary for everyone.

There are a few groups of people who may benefit from taking probiotics, including:

 • People who are taking antibiotics. Antibiotics can kill both good and bad bacteria in the gut. Probiotics can help restore the balance of bacteria in the gut after taking antibiotics.
 • People with digestive problems. Probiotics can help to improve digestion and reduce symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), and other digestive problems.
 • People with vaginal infections. Probiotics can help to prevent and treat yeast infections and bacterial vaginosis.
 • People with immune system disorders. Probiotics may help to boost the immune system and fight off infection.

There’s a lot of talk about prebiotics, probiotics, and postbiotics. How is each of these different? Do we need to be taking all of them at once?

Prebiotics, probiotics, and postbiotics are all important for gut health. They work together to create a healthy balance of bacteria in the gut.

 • Prebiotics are non-digestible carbohydrates that feed probiotics. They are found in many fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.
 • Probiotics are live bacteria that are good for your health. They are found in some foods, such as yogurt, sauerkraut, and kimchi, and they can also be taken as supplements.
 • Postbiotics are the byproducts of probiotics. They are produced when probiotics break down food and other substances in the gut. Postbiotics can have a number of health benefits, including improving digestion, boosting the immune system, and reducing inflammation.

Is there a particular strain of probiotic that’s best for women?

There are several different strains of probiotics that are beneficial for women. Some of the most common strains include:

 • Lactobacillus rhamnosus HN001 and Lactobacillus reuteri HR7. These two strains are specifically designed to support vaginal health. They can help to prevent and treat yeast infections, bacterial vaginosis, and other vaginal infections.
 • Lactobacillus acidophilus LA-14. This strain is a general-purpose probiotic that can help improve gut health. It can help improve digestion, reduce bloating and gas, and boost the immune system.
 • Bifidobacterium lactis HN019. This strain is also a general-purpose probiotic that can help improve gut health. It can help to improve digestion, reduce bloating and gas, and boost the immune system.

What are colony-forming units?

Colony-forming units (CFUs) are used to estimate the number of viable cells of bacteria or fungi in a sample. This is done by plating the sample on a growth medium and counting the number of colonies that form. A colony is a group of cells that have grown together and formed a visible mass. The number of CFUs in a sample can be used to determine the concentration of bacteria or fungi in the sample.

Is there a downside to taking probiotics?

Probiotics are generally considered safe for most people. However, there are some potential side effects, including:

 • Gas, bloating, and diarrhea. These are the most common side effects of probiotics and usually go away on their own within a few days.
 • Allergic reactions. In rare cases, probiotics can cause allergic reactions, such as hives, itching, and swelling of the tongue or throat.
 • Severe infections. In people with weakened immune systems, probiotics can potentially cause severe infections.

Just Thrive Probiotic

Recommended by Edie, Wellness Editor

I don’t take a probiotic, but if I did, I would take Just Thrive! It’s what I recommend to my clients who need digestive support. It’s spore-based, meaning that it actually makes its way to your digestive tract— where it’s needed. As nourishing as probiotics can be, their journey to the intestines can be rough (especially as they pass through the stomach). Way too many probiotics die off before they get to the gut. *Note: I don’t take a probiotic because I eat a lot of fermented foods.

 • Type: Capsule
 • Colony Forming Units: 3 billion cells
 • Dosage: 1 capsule per day

Seed DS-01 Daily Synbiotic

Recommended by Suruchi, Food Editor

I’ve been taking Seed for about three years now, and while many other supplements and greens-type powders have come and gone in my life, this is the one thing that has remained a constant. It took a while for me to notice any difference when I started taking it in terms of digestion, but after a few weeks, I started noticing an improvement in digestion and regularity. Three years later, the benefits have continued and Seed is a part of my everyday morning routine.

Pros: As Edie mentioned, a lot of probiotics don’t even make it to the gut, but Seed is designed to get where it needs to go. Their 2-in-1 nested capsule safeguards viability through digestion for delivery of an average of 100% of the probiotic starting dose to your colon.

Cons: At $50 a month, it is an added expense, but I find it has been worth it for my personal health. However, they did just launch a 6-month supply program instead of monthly shipments. It’s not only better for sustainability but also saves you about $90 a year!

 • Type: Capsule
 • Colony Forming Units: 53.6 Billion AFU
 • Dosage: 2 capsules daily
 • Certified: Vegan, gluten-free, dairy-free, soy-free, nut-free, shellfish-free, sesame-free, glyphosate/AMPA-free, corn-free, no binders, no preservatives

Ora Trust Your Gut High Potency Probiotic & Prebiotic

Recommended by Casey, Editorial Intern

For almost two years, I was on antibiotics almost every month for what we thought to be recurrent tonsilitis. (Surprise! It was an auto-inflammatory disorder.) These antibiotics took a serious toll on my gut health, and I decided to seek out a diet filled with fermented foods and plenty of fruits and veggies. Trust Your Gut was a probiotic recommended to me by my GP, and I’ve been taking it for around a year and a half now. Since I integrated it into my daily routine, I experience very few moments with an upset stomach and my bloating has decreased tenfold.

Pros: This probiotic doesn’t need to be refrigerated and contains 11 clinically-studied and acid-resistant strains.

Cons: It’s a bit on the pricey side (as many probiotics are), which is really the only downside I’ve experienced with this product.

 • Type: Capsules
 • Colony Forming Units: 52 Billion CFU
 • Dosage: 1 capsule at night and 1 capsule in the morning
 • Certified: Gluten-free, dairy-free, GMO-free, soy-free, and vegan

Ora Trust Your Gut High Potency Probiotic & Prebiotic

$49.99 (one-time purchase) or $39.99/month

Happy V Prebiotic + Probiotic

Recommended by Isabelle, Managing Editor

TMI, but here we go: after three months of getting my period for five days a week, every week, I was finally able to schedule an appointment with my gynecologist. And… turns out your girl had her first yeast infection. (Hooray!) Because the prescribed medication would have interacted with other prescriptions I’m taking, I was at a loss for what to do. But then Happy V entered the chat—and my period has thankfully returned to normal.

While this prebiotic and probiotic is specifically intended to improve vaginal health, it also supports gut and immune health. Because I wasn’t expecting anything different, I wasn’t surprised when I found that I didn’t notice the positive effects of taking these supplements until about a month later (according to reviewers of other products, there are different probiotics that produce results faster). However, several months in, I’m happy to report that my period has returned to normal and I haven’t experienced any sniffles/illness since the holidays.

Pros: Doctor-formulated, 100% natural, subscription option, recyclable packaging, more affordable than other options

Cons: Results took about a month to notice

 • Type: Capsules
 • Colony Forming Units: 20 Billion
 • Dosage: 2 capsules daily
 • Certified: Vegan, non-GMO

Happy V Prebiotic + Probiotic

$38.99 (one-time purchase) or $35.09/month

As creative as they come.

Kate Arends doesn’t want to be put in a box. In a world that encourages marketing ourselves as a brand, Kate is hesitant to constrict herself to a niche. Because what’s the point of trying to encompass our wants, quirks, dreams, and accomplishments to a single elevator pitch if those thirty seconds could never dream of containing our multitudes?

It’s with her many identities—designer, mother, founder, and creative director of Wit & Delight—that Kate has built her brand. In images, videos, and blog posts, Kate captures and exudes the creative grace of a life oriented toward beauty.

And while I find myself audibly gasping, oohing, and awing at Instagram post after post, the experience feels unlike any scroll I’ve taken through an influencer’s page. There’s no attempt as aspiration—to show a life clearly out of reach. Instead, woven throughout the stunning interiors, inspiring words, and intimate vignettes, there’s a quiet knowing that with a simple shift in perspective, we can all uncover the same magic Kate has found for herself.

Of course, this isn’t to discount her originality. Take a spin through Kate’s St. Paul home and you’ll find woodland-inspired wallpaper, velvet tufted couches, and colors only a well-trained eye can coordinate. We caught up with Kate on a snowy Monday in Minnesota. And while we expected spring-like weather when we got off the plane, Kate’s home proved to be respite enough.

I’ve been running a business long enough to realize it doesn’t get easier, you just get more comfortable with discomfort.

Kate is proof that no one’s success looks the same. As one of the original bloggers in the design space, Kate is familiar with the challenges and triumphs of building a career online. With products and collections at some of the biggest retailers (Target, Anthropologie, and West Elm are all on her roster), one might think she logs long hours every day at her desk. But Kate is consistent with exercise and time outdoors, prioritizes play, and carves out intentional time with her family.

Curious how she gets it all done? We sat down with Kate to learn the ins and outs of her creative career—plus the routines and rituals that inspire her work and help her days unfold with ease.

Tell us about your career and starting a business. What has life been like as an entrepreneur?

Crazy? Always evolving? I’ve been running a business long enough to realize it doesn’t get easier, you just get more comfortable with discomfort. And I’m thankful for this lesson, thankful for the lesson in resilience. I try to make my schedule both flexible and disciplined. I’m also thankful that continuing to learn and challenge myself to evolve is part of the job. Regardless of what I’m working on, there is rarely a dull moment.

What has been your biggest learning over the past year?

I’ve learned to let go of a lot of trying to do it all. When it came to possibilities for our business and my life, I once liked to keep all doors slightly ajar just in case they came to fruition. I’ve realized that when every opportunity is important, it can be hard to figure out what matters most. So I’ve been saying no more than ever.

In a few words, how would you describe your personal style?

Classic with a splash of whimsy.

What does a typical day look like for you?

6-8 am: I typically get up at 6 for a workout before getting the kids ready for school. If I can peek at my email, I try to do it at this time.

8:30-11 am: I try to get 90 minutes of focused work done. Depending on what I have going on that week, it could be designing a product line or working on a project for our home (e.g., making product selections, deciding on paint colors, creating punch lists for a contractor). A few days a week I dedicate this time to writing for our site, Wit & Delight, and newsletter, House Call.

11 am-3 pm: Lunch, email, and meetings. I use this time for 1-1 consultations on Tuesdays and Thursdays, planning and production meetings with my team, tasks related to upcoming projects, etc. I also often take new business calls during this time.

3-5 pm: I am either shooting content for our channels, picking up whatever priority project is hot that week, or tending to things around the house.

5-8 pm: Family time!

8-10 pm: Reading or catching up on emails.

What time is your wake-up call? And how much sleep do you usually get?

6 am. I’m in bed by 9 pm and usually asleep by 10-1030 pm after doing some reading.

What’s the first thing you do when you wake up?

Drink water and start my workout. I alternate between pilates, HIIT workouts, and strength training.

What rituals set you up for success?

At certain times in my life, I’ve had strict morning routines; at other times, there was no routine other than surviving (hello, years when I had two kids under two). What I’ve come to learn is you have to be flexible with your time and religiously strict about what makes life move smoothly. That means prioritizing daily movement for my mental and physical health, deep work (something that moves my business and goals forward), and quality time with the people I love. Everything else gets done if time and energy allow. It’s kind of the antithesis of what I see a lot of successful people do for their routines, but it’s one I can live with. And isn’t a routine that’s sustainable most likely to remain a routine? I think so.

What I’ve come to learn is you have to be flexible with your time and religiously strict about what makes life move smoothly.

Describe your morning beauty routine from start to finish:

I brush my teeth, then I wash my face with Indie Lee Brightening Cleanser and apply the SkinCeuticals vitamin C serum. After that, I use Beauty of Joseon Sunscreen mixed with Drunk Elephant bronzing drops and apply my makeup.

What do you eat for breakfast?

I drink hot water with lemon. Then I make a cup of coffee and usually eat an apple or make oatmeal (¼ cup oats in ¾ cup water, simmer for five minutes then top with flax seeds, hemp seeds, maple syrup, and walnuts).

What will we always find in your refrigerator?

Fresh herbs, kale, good cheese, eggs, olives, salami, mustards (dijon, brown, hot deli), pickled things (hot peppers, cauliflower, carrots), and big tubs of beans and rice for making bowls throughout the week.

What are your morning rituals?

I never skip coffee or my skincare routine.

What are your favorite books?

It’s often changing but a couple that I have read more than once in the past two years:

What’s always on your nightstand?

Nivea Creme, Bag Balm, whatever I’m reading, and AirPods.

What’s your favorite getting-ready soundtrack?

Lately, it’s been Midnights by Taylor Swift. But I am always making playlists and giving recommendations.

Do you work out in the morning?

Yes, at least 30 minutes of movement. I rotate between HIIT, pilates, and cycling. I take at least three hour-long walks a week, but in the winter I do them in the afternoons due to lack of sunlight and negative temps.

If you had one extra hour every morning, how would you use it?

I would read, write, or design things just for myself.

What are one or two things you do every day to live a more joyful life?

You’ll never have enough time to get it all done, so I focus on what matters to me when I’m overwhelmed. Sometimes this means closing my email or ripping up the to-do list. I ask myself what can be done to ensure I’m working toward the future I want for myself and my family. It makes what’s actually important crystal clear. Knowing that time is a finite resource can be overwhelming in itself, but it can also help bring your priorities into focus.

Shop Kate’s office.

If you could pin your success down to one thing, what would that be?

Never giving up on myself. And never being afraid to pivot.

Sentence Finishers:

I never leave the house without: my wallet.

If there were more hours in the day, I would: spend them fostering curiosity—in nature, in a museum, and playing with my kids. I wish we had more time to just play.

Healthiest morning habit: being grateful to have another day on this earth.

Worst morning habit: thinking I have to follow a strict routine to be successful.

One thing I want to be known for is: my courage and empathy.

The one thing I fear is: failing to raise my children to handle adulthood.

When I feel that fear, I: remember the best thing I can do is set a good example with my own actions.

The book I always recommend: Atomic Habits.

One trait you need to succeed in life: resilience.

Bath or shower? And what’s your favorite shower/bath product? Bath, but we don’t have one at the moment! I love this conditioning rinse by R+Co.

Select from 10 nuanced options on the “Deluxe Pourover” menu or sip on one of the smoothest flat whites we’ve ever had.

While Proud Mary caters more to a coffee-and-a-meal occasion, try it once and we guarantee: it’ll be your new go-to for daytime food and bev.

Could Your Entryway Use Some Love? 11 Designer Tips for Keeping It Streamlined https://camillestyles.com/design/designer-entryway-ideas/ Wed, 26 Apr 2023 11:00:00 +0000 https://camillestyles.com/?p=231126

First impressions are lasting.

The post Could Your Entryway Use Some Love? 11 Designer Tips for Keeping It Streamlined appeared first on Camille Styles.

]]>

In every home, no matter the size or type, the entryway impacts your mood. Walk into shoes and bags galore and you’re doomed to take that chaos into the next room. But enter an organized space, where everything has its place, and ease sets in. It makes sense why all entryway ideas center on organizing: Whether or not this space is tidy, it will have a lasting imprint on our day.

This isn’t to say that an entryway must be pristine. Mine isn’t. With two dogs and a partner who shares my love of outdoor adventures (and all the accompanying gear), I can’t keep this catch-all space perfect. But implementing smart organizing hacks, double-duty furniture, and a few aesthetic accents makes it easy to keep this area streamlined.

11 Entryway Ideas from Interior Designers

To zero in on how to make the most of the entryway, I reached out to a handful of interior designers for their takes. As Kristina Marino of KozyKasa says, “Your entryway is the first impression your guests will have, so it’s important to design it in a way that is both functional and visually appealing.”

#1: Implement a cabinet

You’ll need a heavy hitter for holding beautiful and utilitarian objects. Andi Morse of Morse Design recommends going for a cabinet, console, or entryway table to do the job.

#2: Give your keys a home

Of all the entryway ideas, this one is a non-negotiable, adds Morse. These critical tools need a constant home or else you’ll be scrambling. Dedicate a beautiful bowl or basket and place it atop a cabinet or console.

#3: Have fun with color and patterns

The entryway is a chance to go bold and add some drama, believes Angela Hamwey of Mackenzie & Co. “You may consider an unexpected paint color or bold wallpaper to showcase color and pattern that speaks to your style,” she says.

#4: Go for glossy paint

If you want to make an even bolder statement, opt to paint the walls and ceiling in a glossy finish, as Katie Davis of Katie Davis Design loves. In a small entryway, Davis painted the walls and ceilings an olive green lacquer. “The allover tone in a glossy application gave the space more dimension, making the entry feel even larger,” she says.

#5: Play up the neutrals

But if you’re battling limited space, as most of us are with our entryways, Hamwey says to play up the neutrals. Consider cream or beige paint and simple furniture pieces. Doing so will “reflect the light to create an illusion of a larger space and enhance the visual appearance,” she says.

#6: Let there be light

Like in any room, never overlook the power of lighting. “Whether it’s a pendant, sconces, or table lamp, the warm glow creates a welcoming atmosphere,” says Angela Hamwey of Mackenzie & Co. “Often this space is near the front door, so proper lighting will help guide you in and out of the home and allows you to find your belongings easily.”

#7: Accessorize

Often the smallest décor pieces make the biggest impact in a home—and the entryway is a perfect place to weave these in. “We love a set of focal accessories like lamps or candlesticks for balance without being strictly symmetrical,” says Kiley Jackson of Jackson Warren Interiors. “And greenery is an easy way to add life and warmth, as well as a small vintage tray to keep things tidy.”

#8: Bench it

If you don’t have the room for a cabinet or table, Blair Burton says to go for a stylish bench. “This is a favorite of mine,” says the founder of Blair Burton Interiors. “It’s really useful and leaves more wall room for statement art.”

#9: Go for the catchall

The basket is the hero of the entryway. Because as Kristin Marino of KozyKasa believes, “they work well to hide any clutter” such as shoes, dog leashes, hats, and all the rest. They’re also visually appealing. Aim for at least one to corral the clutter and give everything an easy home.

#10: Hang a mirror

You can’t go wrong here. “A quick mirror check for guests on the way in or out is practical and beautiful,” says Kara Adam of Kara Adam Interiors.

#11: Lay a rug

It’s one of the quickest ways to up-level a room. “We love to incorporate a vintage rug in the entry to create a statement and serve a functional purpose,” says Hamwey. “Often the entry can accommodate a smaller rug, so it doesn’t require a large investment and allows you to splurge to find something truly special.”

Why We Love It: Turmeric is chock-full of health benefits, and it’s the star of this luscious ice cream recipe. The spice also boasts an impressive mix of cloves, cinnamon, cardamom, and peppercorns to drive home the flavor.

Hero Ingredient: Parle-G biscuits are the unsung hero of this delectable dessert. Or, if you prefer Biscoff cookies like me, crush up a few extra for mix-ins. And use lots of candied ginger. It’s like Cold Stone Creamery, at home.

Mango Basil No-Churn Ice Cream_healthy ice cream recipes

Mango Basil No-Churn Ice Cream

Why We Love It: This refreshing ice cream recipe is dairy-free and uses coconut milk as its base. And, you can make it all in the blender! Since it uses frozen mango, all you have to do is blend it up and you can enjoy right away. My kind of dessert.

Hero Ingredient: The basil shines here and delivers a nice herbal tone, complementing the sweet/tart mango really well.

mango melon sorbet

Mango Melon Sorbet

Why We Love It: Get out your food processor, because this mango melon sorbet is the perfect summer dessert. All you need for this vegan delight is some melon, mango, bananas, and coconut syrup. This silky sorbet is best enjoyed poolside.

Hero Ingredient: I’m going with the bananas here. They bring a creamy texture to this sorbet that might be unexpected but is definitely appreciated.

healthy oatmeal raisin ice cream_healthy ice cream recipes

Healthy Oatmeal Raisin Ice Cream from Eating Bird Food

Why We Love It: Oatmeal raisin cookies are one of my go-to desserts, and this ice cream is giving all of their flavors and more. Thanks to the frozen bananas used as this sweet-treats’ base, this ice cream is high in fiber and low in sugar.

Hero Ingredient: A hint of cinnamon makes this ice cream taste like you’re biting into a cozy oatmeal cookie.

paleo blueberry crumble ice cream_healthy ice cream recipes

Paleo Blueberry Crumble Ice Cream From Fed and Fit

Why We Love It: This ice cream takes all the beloved flavors and textures of a blueberry crumble and puts them into ice cream form. What could be better? Creamy and crumbly, all wrapped up in one delicious scoop.

Hero Ingredient: We can’t get enough of this gorgeous tart blueberry jam swirl and cashew cookie crumble.

Chocolate Tahini Soft Serve_healthy ice cream recipes

Hero Ingredient: Because this recipe is super simple, it leaves lots of room for customization. Feel free to throw in whatever ingredients you have on hand or are craving. Some that come to mind are cherries, peaches, graham crackers, nuts, and hot fudge… yum.

Chocolate Coffee Nice Cream from Half-Baked Harvest

Why We Love It: Gluten-free, dairy-free, vegan, and oh-so-delicious. All you need are six ingredients, five minutes, and patience as your nice cream firms up in the freezer. The last step is definitely the most difficult.

Hero Ingredient: Dates lay the foundation for this nice cream right alongside the bananas. They counterbalance the cocoa powder and bring a welcome sweetness, though they’re not overly saturating. If you’re not a fan of dates, though, maple syrup makes for a good substitute.

cookie dough blizzard ice cream

Why We Love It: Although a blizzard could possibly fall in the milkshake camp, I firmly believe it’s an ice cream treat. This vegan, gluten-free recipe features a banana base and just a few additional ingredients that you probably already have in the pantry.

Hero Ingredient: The cookie dough, obviously.

cherry ice cream_healthy ice cream recipes

Butterscotch Swirl Pumpkin Cookie Dough Ice Cream_healthy ice cream recipes

Why We Love It: You might be looking at this ice cream and wondering, “how on EARTH is that healthy?” The ice cream base is made of raw cashews and coconut cream and it’s sweetened with coconut syrup that gives it a delicious caramel flavor. The proof is in the pudding… er, ice cream.

Hero Ingredient: Just look at that salted caramel. I have no words.

vegan chocolate nice cream

Vegan Chocolate Nice Cream From Fit Foodie Finds

Why We Love It: On the opposite end of the complexity spectrum, this recipe keeps it simple and vegan with just almond milk, bananas, cocoa powder, and vanilla. An everyday ice cream, if you will. Make a big batch of this tasty treat to enjoy all week long!

Make your minty dreams a reality.

healthy strawberry cheesecake ice cream

Healthy Strawberry Cheesecake Ice Cream from Sandhya’s Kitchen

Why We Love It: Ice cream and cheesecake— two of my all-time favorite sugar-filled desserts. This ice cream is the best alternative I’ve found to the sugar crash that comes with normal cheesecake, made from fat-free cottage cheese and unsweetened almond milk.

Hero Ingredient: This recipe wouldn’t be the same without fresh (and frozen) strawberries!

vegan chocolate avocado ice cream_healthy ice cream recipes

Vegan Chocolate Avocado Ice Cream from Jessica in the Kitchen

Why We Love It: You may be skeptical about throwing avocado into something as sacred as ice cream, but trust me, it won’t disappoint. Avocado is a rich and flavorful alternative that keeps this recipe dairy-free. As a result, this ice cream is full of healthy fats and no refined sugar.

Hero Ingredient: Avocado takes the cake as the top ingredient in this recipe.

dairy-free rocky road ice cream_healthy ice cream recipes

Dairy-Free Rocky Road Ice Cream from Feasting on Fruit

Why We Love It: I will always be a rocky road girl at heart, but sometimes loads of unhealthy ingredients that make this ice cream so delicious steer me away. Luckily, this recipe takes the same nostalgia-inducing flavors and creates a lighter and healthier alternative.

Hero Ingredient: Coconut cream is the key to your ultra-creamy base.

A friendship therapist sounds off.

The post Help! All My Friends Are Moms and I’m Not appeared first on Camille Styles.

]]>

A good portion of my closest girlfriends became pregnant in 2020, and while the baby boom was a silver lining in the gloom of Covid, it did a number on my female friendships when life went back to normal. Once spontaneous wine nights are now planned well in advance, and in the increasingly common case I found myself in a group of all mom friends, I can feel like a circus attraction. Come one, come all and witness the 30-something childless wonder. (I should note that I live in Texas.)

It can feel like psychological warfare from all angles. Is she not calling me as much because she’s drowning in burp cloths and Bluey reruns, or does my cluelessness about nap schedules and pre-school waitlists make me an undesirable hangout? If it’s the former, am I being a bad friend for not reaching out more? If it’s the latter, maybe I’m reaching out too much.

Friendship After Kids: An Expert Shares How It’s Done

That being said, maybe those differences can be a good thing. A colleague who’s a mother told me she has a standing date she’ll never miss with a group of child-free friends—it’s often the highlight of her month. And the joy I get from being the “cool aunt figure” to my new tiny friends is genuinely priceless.

No matter how cherished the friendship, babies and kids tend to make it so that you’ll see your mom friends a little less—if only temporarily. It’s undeniably hard, but it doesn’t have to be a friendship ender.

For a little guidance on how to navigate our evolving friendships, I spoke with Dr. Melanie Ross Mills, relationship expert and author of The Friendship Bond.

Dr. Melanie Ross Mills

Dr. Melanie Ross Mills (AKA Dr. Mel) is a nationally recognized temperament therapist, relationship expert, author, and life strategist.

I imagine it can be easy to make assumptions on both sides. Someone child-free might feel they’ve been left behind. A new mom might feel their child-free friends no longer think they’re fun. How can someone deal with or fight that urge to make that assumption?

It is only human to make these assumptions when we are feeling left out or left behind. When we have entered a new life phase as a new mom, we will experience having to adjust. It is possible that your child-free friends aren’t quite ready for you to go in at 9:00 pm to breastfeed, therefore they don’t view you as the “fun friend’ anymore. It is also possible that the child-free mom feels left out because she is not in the playgroup or able to bond over which car seats are safest.

Acknowledge:

Recognize that there will be some changes in schedules, priorities, mindsets, and approaches to life between the child-free and the new mom friendship. This will help you both step into this new phase of life as you seek to relate to one another in new ways and make an effort to maintain the old.

Prioritize:

Prioritize one another. Continue to incorporate some of your old activities (fun dinners together), but also understand that there will be adjusting. Make time to be together with and without the baby—respecting one another’s desires as you make an effort to share life with one another.

Communicate:

Communication helps curb assumptions. Share in healthy ways what you’re experiencing and how you’re feeling. Let your child-free friend know if you’re sensing she is frustrated with your inability to dance until dawn. Share with your new mom friend that you miss your alone time with her and schedule a date.

What are some ways to foster relationships with new mom friends? How can someone without kids adapt to suit their needs?

A child-free relationship can adapt to suit the new mom’s needs by helping out, releasing expectations, inquiring about how she can show up in her life, extending support, and communicating her own needs as well.

On the other hand, how can a new mother ensure her friends without kids that she wants to maintain a strong friendship?

A new mom can choose to continue to make an effort with her child-free friends, reminding them that she’s still the same person she was previously and her love for them has not changed. Schedule your own “play dates” with your friends that have not experienced motherhood—center them around what they want to do. Be sensitive and try to empathize with where they’re coming from (especially the fear of the unknown).

What are some things to keep in mind when you’re the odd one out in a group (the one without kids, or the only one with)? What intentional actions can you take to maintain those bonds?

I’d start with releasing the mindset that you’re the odd man out in the group. Whether you have children or you don’t, you’re friends with one another for a reason. You’ve chosen to share life together. Each of you has something to offer the whole. That is why your presence is valuable, even if you do feel like the odd man out.

Children do not make us “less than,” or “more than.” It’s good to remind yourself that you’re still the awesome person you were created to be, with or without children. To maintain bonds, we must make an effort. Connecting doesn’t happen in isolation. Therefore, don’t get discouraged if you have an awkward experience as these changes are taking place. Don’t give up on your child-free and new mom friends. If you want them in your life, make an effort, make plans, and make memories.

Friendships do change as we get older—when do you feel it’s time to accept that a friendship hasn’t made the transition?

Friendships do change as we change. Some will be in your life for a lifetime while others will be seasonal. We never want to write anyone off, but we also want to be realistic if a friendship hasn’t made the transition. Most of the time, you’ll notice a disconnect between you two. This doesn’t mean your friend will never be in your life again, it just means you’re moving away for now.

It is time to accept that the friendship hasn’t made the transition when there’s no longer a reciprocation in play. Once a friend has reached out multiple times without the other responding, that’s usually a good indicator that it’s okay to open your heart and time toward other friendships. Or, you might be the one that’s not feeling prompted to reciprocate in ways that you have previously. That’s okay too. Life’s about growth and relationships teach us, expand us, challenge us, heal us, hurt us, and grow us. We want to be in reciprocated friendships—child-free and/or new mom candidates welcome.
