Who doesn’t love a good DIY? Pinterest has long been my happy place, and I’ve always loved pouring over home design magazines. The beauty of a do-it-yourself approach is two-fold: there’s the obvious aesthetic pleasure a completed project brings and the pride that comes with knowing it was a product of your own ingenuity and skill. But with home products taking the brunt of shipping delays, DIY spring decor is as essential as it is a fun exercise in creativity.

Tasked with scouring social media for the best DIY spring decor, I happily (excitedly!) jumped into my assignment. A simple spin around my favorite design sites and accounts brought up countless creative solutions to the out-of-my-price-range wishlist toppers. (A sigh for this mirrored nightstand.) And a dive into decor hashtags led me to new and inspiring projects that have all been added to my May bucket list.

From surprisingly simple, floral-inspired centerpieces to mantel accents to personalized wall art, this roundup is full of inspiration to help bring your own personal touch home. Let’s get our hands dirty—and dive in.

12 DIY Spring Decor Projects to Spruce Up Your Space

DIY Checkerboard Tray

DIY Checkerboard Tray from SemiStories

The checkered trend isn’t letting up. And good news: if you’re not on board with spring’s push toward bright prints and vibrant hues, this simple DIY offers a neutral approach. The supplies are nothing special—and you likely have them on hand if you’ve done a home decor project in the past. Oven-bake clay, an X-acto knife, and Clear topcoat sealant are probably the hardest to source items on the list. Luckily, we have the internet and fast shipping is a thing.

DIY Upholstered Frames

DIY Upholstered Frames from Honestly WTF

Looking to brighten up family photos or your favorite prints? This easy DIY is a clever way to update your frames without swapping in new ones. Or, you can purchase a few cheap frames and make them one-of-a-kind. Measuring, cutting, and gluing fabric to your frames is all that’s asked of you. Consider it your excuse to invest in a jar of Mod Podge—you’ll find countless reasons to use it after wrapping up this project.

DIY Hanging Centerpiece With Greens and Spring Flowers

DIY Hanging Centerpiece With Greens and Spring Flowers from A Daily Something

Because you’ll be working with real plants in this project, I would save this DIY for when you’re hosting a spring gathering. It’s a simple, but special way to bring color and life to an otherwise minimalist table. Bonus: You don’t have to be a floral designer to make it happen. To quote the project creator herself: “The only skill you really need is to know how to cut wire and then twist it around a dowel!” From there, you have the creative freedom to make it your own.

Mirrored Side Tables

Mirrored Side Tables from A Beautiful Mess

My solution to the mirrored side table mentioned above. Admittedly, this project requires a bit more elbow grease, effort, and power tools than the DIYs above. But trust me: you’re up for the challenge. The step-by-step imagery and instructions are surprisingly easy to follow. And after you successfully use a power drill, you’ll find there’s nothing you can’t do.

DIY Decor Plywood Arch Mirror

DIY Plywood Arch Mirror from The Merry Thought

I’ve seen many a minimalist mirror advertised on Instagram, and while all look cute, I have reason to doubt the quality. Thankfully, with a small piece of plywood, a round mirror, and other easy-to-source tools, you can make one for yourself. Prop it up on your dressing table, desk, or nightstand as a beautiful and functional accessory.

DIY Footed Vanity Tray

DIY Footed Vanity Tray from Home Oh My

Y’all, I am obsessed (ob-SESSED!) with this DIY spring decor project. The modern tray serves as a convenient catch-all for any surface that sees a lot of traffic (i.e., your nightstand, dresser, or bathroom counter). It’s really just a matter of gluing and painting. Name an easier—or more stylish—organization solution for all the products we can’t help but hoard.

DIY Spring Shaped Throw Pillows

DIY Shaped Throw Pillows from The House That Lars Built

After years of convincing myself that today would be the day I would learn how to sew, I’ve finally done it. And thankfully, this skill helped me add a major pop of color to my living room. They say that swapping out your throw pillows is one of the fastest and most impactful ways to makeover a room. This project? All the proof you need.

DIY Wood Half Circle Shelves

Wood Half Circle Shelves from Paper & Stitch

Living in an apartment, I’ve always been on the hunt for creative ways to make the most of my space. Of course, adding shelves is my top priority. These whimsical half circle shelves are an easy introduction to working with wood. They’re a cute way to display simple bud vases or design a sweet vignette to add to an otherwise empty wall space.

DIY Clay Tray

DIY Clay Tray from SemiStories

If you want a DIY spring decor project that calls for a list of supplies three items long, here it is. Oven-bake clay, parchment paper, and a baking sheet are all you need. Convinced? I love how these add not only function but style to any dining table. Plus, they’d make just about the cutest handmade gift.

DIY Seersucker Tea Towels

DIY Seersucker Tea Towels from Frances et Moi

Seersucker is synonymous with endless sunny days and warm weather. To help transition your kitchen to spring, whip out a few of these three-step tea towels. I love the bright edges’ pop of vibrancy. These would look so sweet draped from a hook or over your oven handle.

Playroom Mural Spring Decor

Playroom Mural from Almost Makes Perfect

For parents and caregivers, bring a touch of whimsy to your children’s playroom with this special project. If you’re challenged with a blank wall that doesn’t seem to fit any artwork, go for an impactful DIY that your kids will treasure for years. While painting an accent wall or mural can feel daunting, this simple design is easy to complete. One look at this design blogger’s before pictures will have you ordering the paint asap.

DIY Basket Pendant Light

Basket Pendant Light from Sugar & Cloth

I’ve always loved the look of an accent pendant in a dining area. It’s such a beautiful way to add instant charm and intimacy to any nook. And while pendants can often be expensive, this genius project makes the most of my tendency to hoard woven baskets. (Just me?) Three supplies—your basket of choice, a semi-flush mount light kit, and heavy-duty cutting pliers—are all you need to bring this design hack home.

You won't want to miss this.

The post Here’s What’s Happening Over at Casa Zuma—And All the New Items I’m Obsessed With appeared first on Camille Styles.

It’s been awhile since I’ve shared an update about what’s happening over at Casa Zuma. The reason? Well, turns out that running a direct-to-consumer products brand while also running this website makes for a really busy schedule. It doesn’t leave as much time as I’d like for reflection—but so much has been happening behind the scenes that I had to pop in and share a few spring updates with you guys.

First, a quick recap of the last 5 months since launch—it’s been a whirlwind. I’ve met countless incredible makers and artists, packed hundreds of orders with our team, designed packaging, acted as product designer/chief marketing officer/customer service rep—it’s been a crazy busy time but so inspiring and fun. I dove in headfirst, and though it sometimes feels like a lot, I also feel like I’m right where I need to be.

Do we have it all figured out? Not even close—but my intention for this brand is to bring you guys the most special, inspiring, creative pieces that elevate your everyday. And that pursuit has meant that, at times, I’ve had to let go of perfection, knowing that we’ll keep dialing it in as we go. As with any new business, it’s required a lot of patience and learning to trust the process. One of the biggest challenges of working with handmade goods from countries around the world is that lead times can be long—we’re working directly with our artisans to design and develop new pieces that are exclusive to Casa Zuma, so the journey from concept to actually having the product in hand is a months-long process.

SO, the products in our spring collection are items I’ve been working on and waiting for for months, and I can’t wait to finally show you! Here are my top 5 picks from our spring collection. Head over to CasaZuma.com to shop them all today.

Found Dough Bowls

I’ve collected vintage wooden dough bowls myself for years, and they’re one of the items in my home you guys ask me about all the time. So, I’m thrilled to finally bring you these one-of-a-kind hand-carved dough bowls made of reclaimed wood. I use this as a catch-all for keys in the entryway, or I fill it with citrus for a simple centerpiece. This is the time to embrace a wabi-sabi aesthetic—every single one of these is different, so embrace the element of surprise!

Sharing Bowl (get on the waitlist!)

Our new ceramic serving bowl was inspired by the one I use almost every night on the dinner table for grains or roasted veggies, served family-style. Handmade in Los Angeles by our friends at LA Clay, it’s perfectly sized for sharing any side dish. These are really special with a beautiful speckling in the glaze that I just adore. They’re coming soon—so be sure to hit the “notify when available” button to be the first to shop.

Linen Table Throw in “Natural Sand”

Meet the newest color in our incredibly popular linen table throw: Natural Sand (aka my new favorite!) It’s ethically-made in Lithuania of heavyweight linen, and we designed it to toss casually over any-sized table. I usually embrace the linen’s natural wrinkles for a look that’s laid back and not at all fussy.

Solstice Mugs (get on the waitlist!)

Aaah I have been waiting to share our newest mug with you guys! Our first mug sold out incredibly fast, so I couldn’t be more excited to share the newest in our collection, The Solstice Mug. Thrown by hand in Los Angeles by our friends at LA Clay, this is the cozy, no-handle mug I reach for to start (or end) my day—it’s just perfect. I even use the large size as a pen holder on my desk! These are coming soon—so be sure to hit the “notify when available” button to be the first to shop.

Sabré Flatware in Ivory

Since you guys love our teak flatware as much as I do, I’ve been dying to introduce a new color to the collection—meet our new Ivory Sabré Flatware! These are made in France, and for those of you who can’t quite get on board with a wood-handle silverware set, this durable acrylic handle is for you. They come in a set of four (one full place setting), and embody the casual approach to setting the table that is so my vibe.

Could Your Entryway Use Some Love? 11 Designer Tips for Keeping It Streamlined https://camillestyles.com/design/designer-entryway-ideas/ Wed, 26 Apr 2023 11:00:00 +0000 https://camillestyles.com/?p=231126

First impressions are lasting.

The post Could Your Entryway Use Some Love? 11 Designer Tips for Keeping It Streamlined appeared first on Camille Styles.

In every home, no matter the size or type, the entryway impacts your mood. Walk into shoes and bags galore and you’re doomed to take that chaos into the next room. But enter an organized space, where everything has its place, and ease sets in. It makes sense why all entryway ideas center on organizing: Whether or not this space is tidy, it will have a lasting imprint on our day.

This isn’t to say that an entryway must be pristine. Mine isn’t. With two dogs and a partner who shares my love of outdoor adventures (and all the accompanying gear), I can’t keep this catch-all space perfect. But implementing smart organizing hacks, double-duty furniture, and a few aesthetic accents makes it easy to keep this area streamlined.

11 Entryway Ideas from Interior Designers

To zero in on how to make the most of the entryway, I reached out to a handful of interior designers for their takes. As Kristina Marino of KozyKasa says, “Your entryway is the first impression your guests will have, so it’s important to design it in a way that is both functional and visually appealing.”

#1: Implement a cabinet

You’ll need a heavy hitter for holding beautiful and utilitarian objects. Andi Morse of Morse Design recommends going for a cabinet, console, or entryway table to do the job.

#2: Give your keys a home

Of all the entryway ideas, this one is a non-negotiable, adds Morse. These critical tools need a constant home or else you’ll be scrambling. Dedicate a beautiful bowl or basket and place it atop a cabinet or console.

#3: Have fun with color and patterns

The entryway is a chance to go bold and add some drama, believes Angela Hamwey of Mackenzie & Co. “You may consider an unexpected paint color or bold wallpaper to showcase color and pattern that speaks to your style,” she says.

#4: Go for glossy paint

If you want to make an even bolder statement, opt to paint the walls and ceiling in a glossy finish, as Katie Davis of Katie Davis Design loves. In a small entryway, Davis painted the walls and ceilings an olive green lacquer. “The allover tone in a glossy application gave the space more dimension, making the entry feel even larger,” she says.

#5: Play up the neutrals

But if you’re battling limited space, as most of us are with our entryways, Hamwey says to play up the neutrals. Consider cream or beige paint and simple furniture pieces. Doing so will “reflect the light to create an illusion of a larger space and enhance the visual appearance,” she says.

#6: Let there be light

Like in any room, never overlook the power of lighting. “Whether it’s a pendant, sconces, or table lamp, the warm glow creates a welcoming atmosphere,” says Angela Hamwey of Mackenzie & Co. “Often this space is near the front door, so proper lighting will help guide you in and out of the home and allows you to find your belongings easily.”

#7: Accessorize

Often the smallest décor pieces make the biggest impact in a home—and the entryway is a perfect place to weave these in. “We love a set of focal accessories like lamps or candlesticks for balance without being strictly symmetrical,” says Kiley Jackson of Jackson Warren Interiors. “And greenery is an easy way to add life and warmth, as well as a small vintage tray to keep things tidy.”

#8: Bench it

If you don’t have the room for a cabinet or table, Blair Burton says to go for a stylish bench. “This is a favorite of mine,” says the founder of Blair Burton Interiors. “It’s really useful and leaves more wall room for statement art.”

#9: Go for the catchall

The basket is the hero of the entryway. Because as Kristin Marino of KozyKasa believes, “they work well to hide any clutter” such as shoes, dog leashes, hats, and all the rest. They’re also visually appealing. Aim for at least one to corral the clutter and give everything an easy home.

#10: Hang a mirror

You can’t go wrong here. “A quick mirror check for guests on the way in or out is practical and beautiful,” says Kara Adam of Kara Adam Interiors.

#11: Lay a rug

It’s one of the quickest ways to up-level a room. “We love to incorporate a vintage rug in the entry to create a statement and serve a functional purpose,” says Hamwey. “Often the entry can accommodate a smaller rug, so it doesn’t require a large investment and allows you to splurge to find something truly special.”

The Internet’s Buzzing About These 7 Productivity Products—Here’s Our Honest Review https://camillestyles.com/design/splurge-skip-work-from-home/ Tue, 25 Apr 2023 11:00:00 +0000 https://camillestyles.com/?p=225570

The final word on $500 headphones.

The post The Internet’s Buzzing About These 7 Productivity Products—Here’s Our Honest Review appeared first on Camille Styles.

]]>

Growing up, nothing ushered in fall quite like back-to-school shopping. While others may have looked forward to new styles at the Gap or stocking up at Limited Too—hello, mid-aughts—my middle school self couldn’t wait for the trip to Staples. Binders, notebooks, pencil pouches—with the right supplies, gold stars were in my future. As adults, we approach work gear in much the same way. This planner will increase my productivity. That chair will solve my back problems. Those headphones will keep me on task. When it comes to splurge-or-skip work-from-home products, hyped-up social posts make us believe anything can solve our work woes.

But as we know, the internet presents an exercise in smoke and mirrors. Despite the regulation on social advertising and the general ennui surrounding the capitalism on display, the power of influence persists. And as quickly as the de-influencing trend was exposed for its own exploitation of consumers—”You don’t need this <insert dollar amount> item that I was gifted and will continue to use quietly behind the scenes”—we’ve returned to a muddled middleground. Is there any way to *truly* trust a product you discover online?

All I’m saying is—dear reader, approach any review with a heavy dose of skepticism. Just as much as I believe myself to be an authority on the following splurge-or-skip work-from-home products (tested and reviewed!), your experience could always be different from mine. With subjectivity at play, who knows—maybe you’ll actually find the Stanley Tumbler worth the $$$. (Hint: I didn’t.)

Splurge or Skip: Work From Home Edition

In the spirit of providing you with educated purchasing power, I selected some of the top work-from-home items that I’ve tried out since I began working from home full-time that one fateful day back in March 2020. Some of these are specific to my own workday rhythms and routines. (An example: my non-negotiable morning matcha.) However, the majority of these products apply to the universal my-guest-room-is-my-office work experience. From standing desks to the ergonomic chair I’m still lamenting my loss of—scroll on for the splurge-or-skip work-from-home products you may (or may not) consider making a part of your 9-5.

Every product is curated with care by our editors and we’ll always give an honest opinion, whether gifted or purchased ourselves. If you buy something through our links, we may earn a small commission at no cost to you.

An Aesthetic Planner: Papier Wonder Undated Daily Planner

Even if you don’t follow #thatgirl on TikTok or Instagram, you’ve likely seen a crisp and aesthetically-driven planner punctuating the end of a productive morning routine. In our world where everything can be made visible with the tap of a screen, design matters beyond basic functionality. And though my tone may lean cynical, it’s only to emphasize: the right planner is the one that works for you. Remember: when it comes to planners and journals, there are a plethora of options to support you in this season of life. For inspiration, check out more of our tried-and-true, favorite guided journals.

Personally, I love this planner for the following:

 • Includes open-ended “mind map” for jotting down dreams and planning out goals.
 • The planner is undated—you can start whenever suits your journey.
 • Comes in a range of bright and muted colors to fit your personal style.

Again, selecting a planner may not seem like a personal experience, but finding one that brings you mental clarity and sets you up for daily success requires reflecting on what you truly need. Do you want space to doodle alongside your written brainstorming? Do you find affirmations or quotes inspiring? I recommend asking yourself what you need first and then finding the planner that works for you.

Noise-Cancelling Headphones: Apple AirPods Max

If the last three years of remote work have taught me anything, it’s that I’m nothing without my headphones. Beyond office hours, I’m listening to podcasts and audiobooks while I clean, walk, and work out. To keep my main character energy at bay, I need a new narrative in my head to capture my attention during administrative tasks. For me, a good set of headphones should do the following:

 • Stay in my ears or on my head.
 • Provide clear sound (both when I’m listening and taking a call).
 • Be design-forward in both function and aesthetic.

And while that third qualification may stand, I’m not paying $500+ to be on trend. Yes, admittedly this is the single product I haven’t tried on this list. However, an analysis of Amazon reviews can clear up some common questions.

Ultimately, what reviewers try to communicate is whether or not the AirPods Max merit the price tag. As a 4-star rating shared, “When you account for the sound quality, noise cancellation, convenience, comfort, and the quality of the build, it makes the price more palatable.” A few callouts:

What’s to love:

 • Foam-and-cloth ear pads create a seal comfortable for long listening sessions. (Users noted they enjoy the ear pads’ warmth in colder weather.)
 • Clear noise-canceling sound—no hissing.
 • Convenient to use with and connect to other Apple products.

What’s not:

 • Despite the ear pads’ comfort, the weight of the headphones altogether is uncomfortable and the initial clamping force can make them hard to wear while doing other activities. However, users noted this improved after several weeks of use, but some still refused to wear them while working out.
 • Difficult connecting to non-Apple products.
 • While there are conflicting experiences, many users note a condensation/water buildup underneath the ear cups after a few hours of continued use.
 • The case is made of quality material, but users note that it doesn’t provide any protection.

Based on my own criteria, it’s a skip. But if you’re a music junky or need a premium pair of headphones (re: the best *a lot* of money can buy), the Apple AirPods Max are the ones.

An Ergonomic Office Chair: Branch Daily Chair

This chair has my heart. As I noted above, the Branch Daily Chair would still be in my life were it not for a move and some downsizing. But for the year I owned this chair, it truly transformed my workday. (That review alone convinced my mom to buy one, and she’s obsessed.) Let’s break it down.

What’s to love:

 • Mesh material is supportive and comfortable while also being breathable—i.e., no sweat puddles after a long day.
 • The curved backrest and seat support your natural movement. It feels comfortable and I found that it even improved my posture while I worked. I won’t lie—I felt more productive.
 • Made from 70% recycled materials and parts that are 96% recyclable after use.
 • The minimal, modern design is aesthetically pleasing and comes in four muted tones to fit almost any space.

What’s not:

 • My only note is on the price. For the ergonomic comfort and beautiful design, I found this chair to be worth the cost. However, if you only work from home once a week or need a chair that you’ll only sit in for a couple of hours, you can get away with a less expensive chair. Just know that you’ll be sacrificing comfort.

Because my bedroom also functions as my at-home office, I now sit in a (much less comfy) hard and sleek chair. However, after writing this review, I’ve even convinced myself: it’s time I bring the Daily Chair back into my life.

The Answer to Your 3 pm Slump: Cuzen Matcha Maker Starter Kit

I’ll start this review by being very clear: this matcha maker is a luxury. The process of making matcha itself can be a joy-inducing and therapeutic ritual (check out our interview with Jules Acree for proof!). And while I revel in the slow mornings when I have time to sift and whisk my matcha to frothy perfection, my pre-work routine oftentimes doesn’t allow it. Enter: the Cuzen Matcha Maker Starter Kit.

I caught wind of this sleek appliance from its celebrity-endorsed fanbase. Everyone from Hailey Bieber to Carey Mulligan to Alicia Yoon has touted its streamlined matcha preparation, ease of use, and the delicious lattes it churns out. Personally? It’s now a part of my everyday wellness ritual.

For the best matcha of your life (and for way less than I’d pay at my local coffee shop), you truly just have to press a button. The kit comes with organic leaves that are stored in the hopper and freshly ground when you start the machine. Fill the whisking cup with water, select your matcha’s desired strength, and that’s it—simply add steamed milk and any sweetener to make your latte.

What’s to love:

 • The machine’s sleek design makes it easy to store on your kitchen countertop.
 • Produces quality-grade matcha with the press of a button.
 • Easy to clean.

What’s not:

 • The machine is not compatible with other matcha leaves. You’ll have to purchase leaves specifically through Cuzen. (Though I can attest: the brand’s ceremonial grade leaves produce an incredible matcha latte.)

A Phone Charger-Stand Hybrid: Courant Mag:2 Essentials

The one part of my work-from-home setup that’s not always so sleek and chic? My tech—specifically, my cords. I have a way of somehow unintentionally getting everything tangled up. It was for that reason (and the pull of beautiful design) that I invested in the Courant Mag:2 Essentials. To avoid the otherwise inevitable abyss of cords and cables, this catch-all keeps my non-negotiables (iPhone, Apple Watch, and AirPods… yes they’re what I’ve opted for in lieu of the AirPods Max) in a single spot.

What’s to love:

 • Your phone can be easily rotated on the stand while it charges, allowing you to simultaneously view videos in landscape mode.
 • Modern design and neutral colors seamlessly blend into any workspace and can be placed on a nightstand with little visual disruption.
 • Simple to use as a stand for hands-free FaceTime or video calls.

What’s not:

 • Slower to charge devices than Apple chargers, but a good option if storage is important and/or you’re in the market for a phone stand.

Blue Light Blockers: Felix Gray Faraday Blue Light Blocking Glasses

I never truly understood the need for the 20-20-20 rule until the pandemic. (For those not in the know, the rule calls you to look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds for every 20 minutes you look at a screen.) Suddenly, my life was reduced to what I could see on a screen—and like many of us, I was looking a lot. With the ubiquity of doomscrolling came the many Instagram ads for blue light-blocking glasses. But among the masses, the Felix Gray Faraday glasses stood out.

Why? The design appeal, to start. I’m of the belief that clear frames are universally flattering. And while I used to get a headache only an hour into work, since wearing these, I’ve noticed a significant drop in eye strain throughout the day. Admittedly, I don’t wear these constantly while working—as someone who isn’t used to wearing glasses, they can become irritating after a bit. I use these for writing and reading tasks, specifically—producing articles, drafting emails, etc. They’re off for meetings, though I’m always tempted to show them off.

What’s to love:

 • 100% UVA/UVB protection.
 • Available in non-prescription, prescription, readers
 • Bonus: These are eligible for reimbursement when using your pre-tax FSA or HSA dollars!

What’s not:

 • Frames become uncomfortable after a few hours of continuous wear.

An Adjustable Standing Desk: FlexiSpot Pro Standing Desk (E5)

How many times have you heard the following? Sitting is our generation’s smoking. One of the ways everyone’s looking to fix this? Standing more while working, duh. But after I was gifted a hand-me-down version of this desk from a friend: I learned: it’s not worth the hype—or the precious square footage. Let me explain.

As an urban apartment dweller, I’m careful to keep my office and work gear somewhat inconspicuous. My desk is clear at the end of the day and everything follows a neutral color story. And while I loved the additional workspace to splay and spread out as I pleased, there was no way this desk would ever work with my home. Not only did it take up significant space width- and lengthwise, but the height (even at its lowest setting) felt imposing to the rest of the décor.

What’s to love:

 • The electric height adjuster makes it easy to swap in between heights. No hand-cranking necessary.
 • Loved the minimalist, Scandinavian design.
 • Can customize your desk setup to fit your personal needs/tastes, selecting between different desktop and frame styles.
 • Can be used with compatible accessories that streamline your workspace and flow.

What’s not:

 • To be frank, there is really nothing wrong with this desk (even the 1- and 2-star reviews didn’t seem to address the desk itself, commenting instead on their experience with customer service). This standing desk, and many similarly-designed models, are for a more spacious at-home setup or would work well in an office setting.

Ultimately, it’s a beautiful desk. If you’re someone who isn’t able to fit in regular walks or is literally glued to your desk, it could be worth the investment. However, given its surface size, it’ll likely only work with your décor if you have a dedicated office space. When that happens for me, you can bet I’ll be back to purchase.

Which one speaks to you?

If you believe Instagram, your home should look like this: curved-lined furniture, dusty blue walls, two accent chairs, and a plush throw blanket. This aesthetic may or may not speak to you, but its familiar presence on interior designers’ grids these days almost seeps into your consciousness. Of all the interior design styles, it seems that this is the look to go after.

Here’s refreshing news for the industrialists, bohemians, and coastal cottage lovers among us: Today’s design rules are endless, non-binary, and inclusive of it all. No matter what IG says, it’s all about mixing it up. In short: anything goes these days. The key is to lean into what makes you happy

#1: Minimalist

Some call it ascetic, others bland, and many see this approach as a study of serenity and calm. However you describe this interior design style, one thing’s certain: Minimalism has had significant staying power. Simply put, a minimalist interior forgoes any extraneous décor accessories or added furniture to honor the essentials. Designers focusing on minimalist décor emphasize function, breathing room, and negative space. Everything has a purpose, whether it’s to provide comfort or beauty. The result is harmony and ease.

Key attributes of Minimalist design include:

 • Sparse furniture that serves several functions
 • Very few added objects
 • Uncluttered negative space
 • Even-toned neutral colors or black and white

#2: Japandi

A blend of Japanese and Scandinavian design, Japandi merges two cultural aesthetics that share a love for nature and simplicity. Designers bring this look to life with natural hues and organic materials like wood, linen, and paper. Overall, the aesthetic offers an understated, simplistic vibe. As Laila Rietbergen, the author of Japandi Livingdescribes it, “less is more” regarding this calming design style.

Key attributes of Japandi design include:

 • understated and quiet simplicity
 • rich woods in various tones
 • the use of multiple textures and tones
 • organic shapes

#3: Traditional

As its name suggests, Traditional interior design pulls from tradition—and history. Originating in the late 18th and early 19th century, Traditional roots come from the classic European décor readily found in period films and antique shops. This includes rich Mahogany wood furniture with details, patinaed brass, old-world glass and ceramic décor, and ornate art. Comfort is critical with traditional design embellished with lively patterns and colors.

Key attributes of Traditional design include:

 • antique furniture
 • a substantial nod to French and English homes
 • timeless décor that harkens back centuries
 • decorative colors and botanical prints
Barbiecore style

#4: Barbiecore

No other interior design style embraces pink in all its glory quite like Barbiecore. This aesthetic, which looks like Barbie herself morphed into a living room, has been taking over people’s social media feeds since the announcement of the Greta Gerwig-directed film Barbie. But it’s not all pink. This design style marries jewel tones, bold graphic prints, and utter creativity. As Gifty Walker, director of merchandising for Joybird says, Barbiecore is “a reminder to keep expressing our unique style, no matter what age we are.”

Key attributes of Barbiecore style include:

 • golden accents
 • contrasting colors of pinks, blues, yellows, and more
 • curved lines
 • ornate materials, such as marble
Image of Justina Blakeney’s bathroom

#5: Bohemian Modern

In the last 18th and 19th centuries, the streets of Paris and London started seeing a wave of iconoclastic fashion. Rebellish creatives were embracing bright colors and loads of layers. This look eventually became known as Bohemian, a calling to the group of people from Bohemia, an eclectic region of former Czechoslovakia. Today the Bohemian aesthetic embraces a no-rules, brightly colored, expressive look. It’s all about mixing flea market finds with tons of color and rich textures. The “modern” in Bohemian Modern marks any design decisions that honor today’s lifestyles, such as updated cabinetry and sleek tiles.

Key attributes of Bohemian Modern design include:

 • a marriage of bright colors, especially turquoise, gold, fucshia, and red
 • lots of vintage and antiques
 • global textiles
 • organic materials with patinaed metals
Image of Molly Madfis’s home by Nicki Sebastian

#6: Scandinavian

Step into the home of a Swede, Finn, Norwegian, or Dane, and you’re likely to experience immediate comfort. The Scandinavian region is known for its subtle-yet-comfortable approach to interior design. Much like minimalism, everything in a Scandi home has a purpose, but there’s less restraint and more eclecticism. Natural colors and elements reign, as do gentle edges, bright whites, and the iconic tapered sofa and table leg. The look merges utility, beauty, and warmth.

Key attributes of Scandinavian design include:

 • soft edges
 • light wood and natural materials
 • thin, tapered furniture legs
 • textural throws made of thick wool and soft cotton
 • neutral grays, beiges, and creams
Image of Cristina Cleveland’s loft

#7: Industrial

Industrial design agrees with a building’s nature. The best way to describe this is to take, for example, the old factory buildings in Manhattan’s Meatpacking District. When designers turned these hard-working buildings into loft homes, they honored the steel pipes and concrete walls by keeping them exposed. So much of industrial décor honors metal, brick, and concrete. High ceilings, large comfortable sofas, and grand art often soften hard edges and masculine tones. This is a mismatch of pieces that all work.

Key attributes of Industrial design include:

 • exposed steel, brick, and concrete
 • hard edges
 • big sofas and tables
 • metal accents and lighting
 • weathered furniture
Image of Sarah Solis’s home by Shade Degges

#8: California Rustic

The California Rustic aesthetic pulls from the west coast’s airy, breezy feel and marries with a bit of country farmhouse rustic. It matches California’s earthy vibes with a modern touch. The finished look is relaxed, effortless, and bright, emphasizing earthy hues and natural woods. Many often confuse this look with Minimalism and Scandinavian, which makes sense. The three design styles all share an affinity for the less-is-more approach. Also, because the Spanish colonial period has a substantial impact on California architecture, many designers weave in Spanish elements.

Key attributes of California Rustic design include:

 • exposed high beams
 • lots of rough woods
 • large windows to let in natural light
 • neutral beiges and light earthy greens
 • indoor plants
 • simple antique and modern furniture
 • natural materials, such as jute and linen
Image of Alex Bates’s Fire Island cottage by Marta Xochilt Perez

#9: Coastal Cottage

Informed by the sea, the Coastal Cottage style marries the coziness of California Rustic with oceanic décor items and colors. Bright white often provides the base, which is then accented by driftwood, seashells, natural prints, and rope décor. Giant plush couches, often in light shades of linen, anchor rooms. There’s an emphasis on comfort and airiness.

Key attributes of Coastal Cottage design include:

 • sugary white paint
 • plush linen couches
 • navy and sky blue accents
 • rope, driftwood, and seashell decor items

From Dirt to Dinner—How We Transformed an Overgrown Area of Our Backyard With Raised Garden Beds https://camillestyles.com/design/how-to-build-raised-garden-bed/ Mon, 17 Apr 2023 10:00:00 +0000 https://camillestyles.com/?p=228543

Get your green thumb on.

The post From Dirt to Dinner—How We Transformed an Overgrown Area of Our Backyard With Raised Garden Beds appeared first on Camille Styles.

]]>

The inspiration for my vegetable gardens came, quite simply, from my love of cooking and eating fresh, seasonal produce. For as long as I can remember, I’ve fantasized about being able to head out into my backyard and pick all the fresh herbs and veggies for dinner that night. I wanted armfuls of mint, fresh heads of little gem lettuce (near impossible to find at grocery stores in Austin), and spring flowers to put in the center of the table.

As we’ve slowly developed our backyard over the years, we knew that when the time came, we wanted to add raised garden beds for growing vegetables and herbs. Finally this past fall, the timing was right. Over a couple months, we researched how to build our own DIY raised garden beds to grow the things we love to cook with. Our whole family pitched in. The kids loved getting their hands dirty, and it turns out that when they participated in planting, they were more likely to actually eat the vegetables that came from the harvest.

It was a journey that required clearing another plot of land behind our house, leveling a hillside, then building a trio of raised wood beds. And now that it’s done, it was worth every drop of sweat.

Not only do we get to enjoy the edible fruits of our labor—tending to a garden has turned out to be an incredibly nourishing way to incorporate more nature into our day-to-day lives.

Read on for the step-by-step of how we made our raised garden beds a reality.

How to Build a DIY Raised Garden Bed

Supplies needed to make 3 raised garden beds:

 • White spray paint
 • 12 cedar planks
 • Rebar
 • Battery-powered drill
 • Shovel
 • 16-20 bags of soil
 • Wheelbarrow
 • Drip sprinklers (optional)
 • Vegetable seeds/seedlings
 • 1 cubic yard of pea gravel (optional)

1. Clear and Level the Land

On our continuing quest to develop the backyard, building these raised beds required us to clear and level another area of the space. Since our home sits up on a high hillside, our foundation is built on a 30-foot retaining wall. So, the acre of land that sits beneath the home is on quite a slope. Over the last few years, we’ve been clearing the brush, so we already had a big open space where we wanted to place the beds.

However, that space needed to be flattened, so the first month of work was spent bringing in dirt and adding another terrace to level out the area where the beds would be built.

2. Map Out the Placement of the Raised Garden Beds

The next step was to map out exactly where the beds would go. Adam used white spray paint to mark out rectangles where each of the three vegetable beds would be placed. We wanted to leave enough room between each bed for a walkway that would fit a wheelbarrow, which would also ensure that each vegetable bed would stay in the sun at different times of day and not create shadows over each other.

3. Build the Frames

Once we knew where the beds were going, we could start building the frames. We decided to use cost-effective cedar planks that are durable (they should last up to 10 years!) and are easier to cut than a tropical hardwood like teak. We designed each of the three rectangular beds to measure 8-feet-by-4-feet. Since our cedar planks were 8-feet long, our wood would need minimal cuts to be the right length, making our lives easier.

4. Bring In Good Soil for Gardening

We filled each of the vegetable beds with 16-20 bags of healthy, nutrient-rich potting soil.

5. Install Sprinklers

Since we know how hot the Texas sun gets between July and September, we installed drip sprinklers to ensure all the plants would get consistent water coverage. Drip sprinklers are pipes that run right under the top of the soil and are more eco-friendly since it deeply hydrates the roots without so much of the water evaporating into air. We have them on a timer so that they get watered regularly and at the optimal time of day.

6. Plant the Garden

Obviously—this is the part we’ve been waiting for! I did tons of reading about what will thrive in Austin’s Zone 8, knowing that our climate vacillates from incredibly hot to occasional hard freezes in the winter.

I decided to devote each of my raised beds to a different purpose:

 • 1 – flowers
 • 2 – herbs
 • 3 – vegetables
camille styles backyard - how to build raised garden beds - vegetable garden - garden supplies and basket

Initially, I made my plan using the square-foot gardening method and mapped out exactly where everything would go. Of course, it didn’t turn out to be quite so clear-cut. I ended up buying way more plants at the nursery than I’d planned (they were all so beautiful!) and I ended up freestyling a bit to make them all fit.

camille styles backyard - how to build raised garden beds - vegetable garden - flowers

For herbs, I planted parsley, dill, chives, mint, basil, cilantro, thyme, and rosemary, and they thrived. Every week, I’d head to the backyard and cut huge bunches of herbs that I keep in mason jars on the kitchen counter for adding to recipes.

My vegetables required more of a learning curve. Since I planted the first round in the fall, I planted lots of squash which ended up taking up way more room than I’d bargained for, and I didn’t have quite as much room for lettuces as I’d hoped.

As for flowers, my zinnias lasted all the way through October, and I loved having fresh flowers from the garden on our dining table all the time.

camille styles backyard - how to build raised garden beds - vegetable garden

I learned so much from the first planting season of our raised garden beds. And even though things didn’t necessarily go perfectly, I really loved the process. I tried not to sweat the small stuff, instead throwing all my learnings into our spring garden. (Which just so happens to be in progress right now!) Follow along on my backyard highlights to see how it’s going.

I’ve often said that fall is my favorite season. The first autumn chill always brings a welcome respite from the end-of-summer heat. Arrange Foraged Branches on the Table

Stylish stems are one of the simplest but most impactful ways to reconnect with nature. Decorative branches arranged in vintage vessels bring an undeniable sense of wabi-sabi to your space. Depending on where you live, you may be able to venture out and clip stems yourself. If not, we recommend sourcing branches from a florist or farmer’s market. Magnolias, forsythia, cherry blossoms, and lilacs are our favorites. Depending on your stems, you’ll want a substantial vase to hold the weight.

Add Fresh Herbs and Edible Flowers to Salads and Cocktails

Spring is defined by fresh flavors, soft colors, and cold beverages. It’s easy to incorporate the season into your every day by featuring herbs and edible flowers in your drinks, snacks, and meals.

We love muddling fresh mint for a tasty mojito or the Kentucky Derby classic, a mint julep. Or add a sprig of rosemary to our go-to this spring: Camille’s Salty Dog cocktail. If it’s a mocktail you’re craving, this Spicy Blackberry Margarita Mocktail isn’t complete without a little fresh basil for garnish.

Cassie Winslow, the author of Floral Provisions and Floral Libations, previously shared with us her favorite edible flowers to use in the kitchen:

 • Roses. They tend to be fragrant and sweet, and some can even lend a pleasant bitterness.
 • Chamomile. These small blooms have an earthy flavor and complexity that reminds me of honey.
 • Lavender. Lavender is lovely and quite perfume-y, so a little goes a long way.
 • Calendula. Calendula petals can be quite subtle in flavor with a slight hint of spice.
 • Hibiscus. I only use hibiscus in its dried form. It has an absolutely stunning color and is very tangy and tart.

A few of our favorite recipes for using edible flowers:

Be Home Mango Wood Decanter, Medium

The best things in life get better with age—case in point, this decanter. Use it to mix up spring-inspired drinks or as a creative vessel for floral arrangements.

Be Home Mango Wood Decanter, $68

Farmhouse Pottery Cocktail Beaker

Vermont-based Farmhouse Pottery is a sought-out source for timeless ceramics. This beaker pairs functionality with universal beauty, and it makes a perfect gift for any home mixologist.

Fill Your Closet With Breathable, Natural Materials

When it comes to staying cool and conquering spring style, selecting looser fits that flatter your figure is key. And as the temperatures warm up, linen and cotton will be your best friends. We love dresses that move with your body throughout the day and that can be taken from school drop-off to happy hour. We’re obsessed with Haven Well Within’s spring collection, full of breath-of-fresh-air fabrics like Tencel and elegant shapes that evoke an artful ease. Yes, even on a work-from-home Wednesday.

Varley High Rise Short

It’s spring and you need a go-to short. The high-rise cut flatters every body while the drawstring waist and side pockets earn this style extra brownie points.

Varley High Rise Short, $88

Display Citrus Fruits in Bowls on the Kitchen Counter

When you decorate with nature, you find the pieces that create the most impact are simple, everyday objects and ingredients that already play a role in your life. Take citrus fruits. They transform regular water into a refreshing and sweet sipper, are non-negotiable in our favorite salad dressings, and look gorgeous displayed on the kitchen counter. Pair your fruits with an equally beautiful basket that makes for stunning storage.

Be Home Berry Basket

Handcrafted by woman artisans in Vietnam, this modern and minimalist berry basket means easy washing up in the sink and can be transferred straight to the counter or table to house your fruit in all its gorgeous glory.

Diffuse Herbal Essential Oils Throughout the House

Lastly, scent plays a significant role in refreshing your home for spring. And while we love candles, diffusers are longer lasting, scenting your home around the clock. Display a minimalist diffuser on a side table or bookshelf for a calming impact that supports your home’s natural spring décor.

Vitruvi Stone Diffuser

This internet-favorite diffuser is well worth the hype. Available in five earth-toned shades, the matte ceramic diffuser naturally scents your home while doubling as a décor piece.

Vitruvi Stone Diffuser, $119

Design peace of mind.

There are those few spots in the house that seem to always take the brunt of our I’ll-put-that-away-later intentions. (Side note: who *really* puts it away later?) Those spaces include the kitchen junk drawer, any previously-clear surface, and—no shade, but shade… —if you’re my partner, our living room floor. As all good home organizers, professional decorators, and Marie Kondo enthusiasts will tell you, everything in your house needs a home. This lets you revel in a sense of peace and ease knowing that every object and item is right where it needs to be. And when it comes to bathroom counter organization ideas, this truth reigns supreme.

But first you have to make space for those homes—and for that, the bathroom counter presents a challenge. It’s a high-traffic area that, for many of us, doesn’t offer a lot in the way of storage. Have no fear: it’s nothing a little creativity can’t solve. In the spirit of helping us all successfully tackle our spring cleaning to-do’s, we’re sharing our favorite bathroom counter organization ideas. The 20 tips below will help you embrace the season without stressing over your excess stash of cotton balls. (Just me?)

Design Peace of Mind: 20 Bathroom Counter Organization Ideas

Every product is curated with care by our editors and we’ll always give an honest opinion, whether gifted or purchased ourselves. If you buy something through our links, we may earn a small commission at no cost to you.

1. Keep It Monochrome

I’ve found the same truth applies to my sartorial choices: when I go monochrome, everything instantly feels more streamlined. For your bathroom counter, a single color palette helps reduce the visual clutter of a million busy product labels. We recommend decanting your toiletries—soaps, lotions, etc.—into similar-hued containers for a soothing and cohesive aesthetic.

2. Stash Non-Essentials in an Under-Sink Shelf

The bathroom counter only provides so much space. If you’re like me, that allows you room for a soap container, toothbrushes, and a small vase full of flowers. As a result, much of what needs to be stored in the bathroom is kept out of a sight in our under-sink cabinet. However, if you don’t have the luxury of a built-in, simply install a shelf where you can house the necessities you use regularly (toothpaste, face wash, and all the skincare goodies) for easy access.

3. Use Trays To Give Everything a Home

Not only do pretty trays add dimension to a bathroom counter, but they also create boundaries to contain your toiletries, accessories, and other small items. I love that they offer not only a functional storage solution but also transform your products and necessities into an aesthetic vignette. Bonus: When it’s time to wipe down the counter, just lift up the tray and you’re good to go.

Open Spaces Nesting Trays

AfooBezos Rectangle Bathroom Tray

Rectangle Bathroom Tray, $11.99

4. Store Loose Items in Containers

As I said, I have a lot of cotton balls that need corralling. Whether it’s Q-tips, wipes, or makeup brushes—if you have a lot of something, contain them in clear glass jars or vases. This keeps your everyday essentials accessible but also organized.

5. Add a Pretty Pick-Me-Up

If you’re not displaying your favorite flowers in the bathroom, take this as a sign to start! It adds a nice natural element to your space and will brighten up what’s often designed as a solely functional room. Pro tip: Hit up Trader Joe’s for DIY bouquets on a budget. I just stopped by my local store yesterday and scored a $5 bouquet of the most gorgeous white tulips.

6. Install Shelving

Trust me: a little added storage makes a huge difference. Whether it’s over the toilet or beside your bathroom mirror, pick a spot that gives you the biggest bang for your buck while also being mindful not to crowd your walls. This is a great opportunity to store not only your products but also display a cascading plant such as a pothos for greater visual impact.

Urban Outfitters Marte Display Wall Shelf

Marte Display Wall Shelf, $49

7. Set the Scent (and Vibe)

Is there anything more luxurious or soul-soothing than a candle that defines the vibe perfectly? The soft flicker provides ideal lighting and is the ideal mood lighting for a self-care evening. Scope our favorite picks here.

Enlighten Egyptian Moonstone Jasmine Candle

Egyptian Moonstone Jasmine Candle, $28

8. Go Acrylic

When it comes to bathroom counter organization ideas, the best emphasize both functionality and style. The best evidence of this is the ubiquity of acrylic organizers. Because you can see what’s inside or stored on top, it’s easy to keep track of your stock and get what you need with ease. These are great options for beauty products or any other daily essentials.

West Elm Cascada Cosmetic Organizer

Cascada Cosmetic Organizer, $25

9. Utilize Height

Because the goal is to keep a clean and clear space, instead of occupying space horizontally, opt for vertical storage. Stack your acrylic containers, purchase rectangular storage, or even a small cake stand will work in a pinch!

Image of Ashley Merrill’s home by Teal Thomsen

10. Bring the Outdoors In

Similar to the zen-like appeal of a vase of flowers, choose low-light plants that will add an organic touch of green to your space. Or, if your bathroom gets zero light, select a you-won’t-believe-it’s-fake faux plant.

11. Store Hand Towels in a Basket

Go for luxe, hotel vibes in your guest bathroom by rolling up hand towels and storing them in a woven basket. The design choice adds an instant touch of effortless elegance.

Image of Samantha Wennerstrom’s home by Sara Prince

12. Utilize the Center Space

If you have a double vanity, first—consider yourself lucky. Second, be sure you’re making the most of this middle stretch. While you might worry it’ll crowd the space, between the sink is the perfect spot for a well-stacked tray.

13. Add an End Table

If your bathroom counter space just won’t cut it, add a small end table beside the sink to keep a few necessities. Because you’ll be introducing an additional furniture piece to the space, be sure to keep the surface storage minimal.

14. Keep Medications in a Chic Storage Box

They’re 100% necessary but also perhaps the least aesthetically pleasing must-have in your bathroom. Easy solution: keep them hidden away in a stylish storage box that’s within reach.

15. Pare It Back

If you take one tip from this list of bathroom counter organization ideas, make it this: when in doubt, go minimalist. While we’re all for infusing personality into a space, prioritize what’s necessary and add a few decorative items here and there. Particularly if you have a small bathroom. The result will be a calming space where everything has its home.

16. Be Thoughtful About Your Soap

Sure, hand soap is an obvious necessity, but you can have a little fun with it, too! Select a pretty soap container you’ll love to look at or opt for a bar and a sweet dish that’ll add a pop of personality to the bathroom.

Bastide Ambre Soir Hand Wash

Object & Totem Ko Soap Dish

17. Store Jewelry in a Small Catch-All

Similar to your medications, if you have a few go-to jewelry pieces that you wear every day, it’s probably likely that you keep them in your bathroom. I love having a small catch-all to keep my necklace, earrings, and a few rings all in one place—allowing me to simply scoop them up and put them on in the morning.

18. Don’t Be Afraid to Match

A common theme when it comes to ensuring your bathroom stays organized and clutter-free: select only a few (three, tops) colors or patterns to keep the vibe calm. An easy way to make this happen is to purchase matching bottles for your soap and lotion. Trust me, it’ll go a long way in grounding the space.

19. Keep Consistent Heights

If you’re going the route of vertical organization, be sure you don’t have too many different heights. You’ll want all the pieces on your bathroom counter to flow in a single smooth line.

20. Make Use of a Mirrored Cabinet

A mirrored medicine cabinet is a common and simple way to add a little more internal storage to your space. And the good news is that it’s way easier to install one than you may think. See below for our favorite storage-saving options.

If you know me (or you follow me on Instagram), then you know this: I’m obsessed with my cats. Millie and Crouton, two 12-year-old Calico sisters, are my raison d’etre—I kid you not. As someone who works from home, these girls are by my side at all times. So much so, that their morning naps serve as the backdrop to any and all Zoom meetings. And though I’m not a first time pet owner, I still want the best for my ladies. That’s why, before adopting my two senior girls, I embarked on a new hobby of researching all the best pet gear. For kitties and dogs alike.

Best Products for Dogs

Best Dog Bed: Fable Pets Memory Foam Dog Bed

If a product brands itself as a “universal dog bed”—run. Just as there are countless different dog breeds, there are many (many) different sleepers. Some burrow, others sprawl, and some seem keen to chew in their sleep. And while our pick can’t account for every sleeper out there, it is the comfiest, softest, and easiest-to-clean pick available.

Comfort: Human-grade crushed memory foam promotes restorative sleep while the preformed hollow offers orthopedic support

How to wash: Machine wash on warm and hang to dry

What’s great:

 • Minimalist design comes in six colors to fit almost any home aesthetic
 • Available in three sizes (XS/S, M, L/XL)
 • Exterior is water-resistant, stain-resistant, and easy to clean
 • UV-resistant to be used indoors or outdoors
 • Bed cover can be easily removed for machine washing

What’s not:

 • While soft, the waterproof cover can be noisy when your dog moves

And while it isn’t necessarily “chew-proof” (is anything?), Atlas Pet Company guarantees free repairs, so you can love this leash for life.

Front Range® Dog Harness, $49.95

Best Dog Jacket: Ruffwear Cloud Chaser™ Dog Jacket

Another Ruffwear fave. Like dog beds, it’s hard to name an overall best dog jacket. (After all, a coat can only account for so many conditions.) But all-around, this is the best pick. Why? Because despite its lightweight build, this waterproof softshell jacket can stand up to all manner of inclement weather—rain, snow, wind, and cold—you name it.

Care: Wash in cold water on gentle with mild detergent. Hang to dry.

What’s great:

 • Zippered closure and sleeves promote core heat retention

Cloud Chaser™ Dog Jacket, $89.95

Best Dog Bowl: Wild One Bowl Kit

The best dog bowl should cover several bases. It should be non-slip, dishwasher-safe, and look cute in your kitchen (or wherever you keep it out). The Wild One Bowl Kit? Check, check, and check. These bowls are simply designed, come in four colors to fit any home aesthetic, and can even be personalized (custom emojis, included). It’s clear that Wild One considered every detail when designing this bowl kit.

 • Dishwasher-safe for easy cleaning

Bowl Kit, $48 (reg. $50)

Best Dog Crate: MidWest Ultima Pro Series Dog Crate

This dog crate is durable and nearly escape-proof, thanks to its thick wire construction. While it may be pricier than other picks, you’re paying for peace of mind with a bottom pan that will hold its own against claws and paws. What’s more, it’s easy to pack up and travel with when you need your crate on the go. It folds up, allowing you to carry it by the handles for easy transit.

Best Products for Cats

Best Affordable Litter Box: Litter Genie Cat Litter Box

For the uninitiated, cleaning a cat’s litter box is more of a chore than it may seem. While some days involve a simple scoop, others require a complete overhaul of the box. In the latter case, this litter box makes it easy with handles that allow you to simply pick up and dump out. Beyond that, the design is discreet, allowing you to sneak it into a corner while still giving your cat adequate privacy. Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, I love that the higher wall construction is effective for keeping litter contained.

What’s great:

 • Flexible handles make the box easy to transport and remove litter
 • High walls keep mess contained
 • Easy to clean

What’s not:

 • Made of plastic material—may have to replace within 1-3 years

Litter Genie Cat Litter Box

u003cpu003eIf you’re on the hunt for an affordable litter box that gets the job done, this is it. With high walls, handles, and a discreet design, this is perfect if you don’t have a basement and need to put your litter box in a bathroom.u003c/pu003e

Cat Litter Box, $29.99

Note: If you’re tempted to splurge on a self-cleaning litter box, we agree with Wirecutter: don’t. As they shared in their review of several models, it’s hard to justify the oftentimes malfunctioning and paradoxically hard-to-clean litter boxes. With most models starting at several hundred dollars (the—perhaps infamous—Litter Robot retails for $699), it’s simply not worth the cost.

Best Discreet Litter Box Enclosure: Hales Litter Box Enclosure

I live in a one-bedroom, loft-style apartment. And while we have plenty of space as far as Chicago standards go, the open floor plan means we have very few options when it comes to finding a home for the litter box. Thankfully, after comparing litter box enclosures for a few weeks, I landed on this minimalist option that conveniently doubles as a furniture piece. While I was at first worried that Millie (who weighs 16 pounds) would find it uncomfortable, both girls are able to use the bathroom without issue. And we can display this in the living room without worrying if guests realized they set their drink on a litter box. Don’t worry, I obsessively clean the box itself multiple times a day.

What’s great:

 • The wood appears sturdy and the clean, modern design blends well with other furniture
 • Provides cats with privacy and can comfortably accommodate even larger cats

What’s not:

 • Even my (extremely handy) partner found this difficult to assemble. We concluded that it can’t be built by one person, as you need an extra set of hands to steady several of the pieces while drilling together.

Tucker Murphy Pet Hales Litter Box Enclosure

u003cpu003eThis is your answer to the inevitable question: u003cemu003ewhere the heck do we put the litter box?u003c/emu003e Any mess is contained while the modern enclosure gives you endless options for where to situate the box. Note: Does not come with a litter box.u003c/pu003e

Hales Litter Box Enclosure, $88.99 (reg. $185)

Best Cat Bed: Tuft & Paw Kip Cat Cushion

After purchasing bed after bed after bed, I’ve learned the hard (and expensive way) that some cats just don’t seem to like cat beds. But after receiving this Tuft & Paw cushion from a family member, the girls were hooked. As bonded cats, they loved snuggling together in their cheaper pet store bed, but from their incessant purring, it was clear that this luxe option satisfied their sleepy needs. The concave surface provides them with a nest-like design, upping the cozy factor tenfold. And the faux shearling cover is beyond soft. Because my girls prefer sleeping together, I selected the Wide size and both cats slept comfortably.

What’s great:

 • Design-forward cat cushion looks aesthetic in any space
 • Concave construction provides cats with a nest-like resting place
 • Sculpted foam core helps bed maintain its shape
 • Comes in two sizes to fit every cat

Tuft u0026 Paw Kip Cat Cushion

u003cpu003eThis soft and nest-like cat cushion wraps your kitty up in comfort. Featuring a faux shearling cover and a sculpted foam core, this cozy bed will be a favorite in your household for years.u003c/pu003e

Kip Cat Cushion, $99+

Best Cat Scratching Post: MS!MAKE SURE Cat Scratching Post

While my cats love their scratching post, they still also love scratching my CB2 couch. (Alas, this seems to be why I can’t have nice things… ) Regardless of the state of my couch, they’re scratching at this post multiple times a day. This scratching post is incredibly versatile, with three different modes to ensure your cats opt for it more often than the furniture. It can be flipped horizontally or vertically for scratching or turned upside-down and used as a side table.

What’s great:

 • Comes with anti-slip silicone stickers to protect hardwood floors
 • Three modes help this scratcher seamlessly fit into any home

MS!MAKE SURE Cat Scratching Post

u003cpu003eStylish and smart, this scratching post features three different modes (vertical and horizontal scratching as well as a side table for human use) that help it seamlessly fit into your lifestyle and home.u003c/pu003e

Cat Scratching Post, $59.99

Best Food Bowl: Cat Person Mesa Bowl

When it comes to your cat’s mealtime, there’s more that matters than the food alone. This food bowl doubles as a work of art while also being ergonomically designed to support your cat’s comfort. I love each of the four colorways (though Savanna is my fave), and as someone who’s obsessed with her cats, it warms my heart to give them the best—and prettiest—bowl.

What’s great:

 • Ergonomically designed to feed your cat at the ideal height (no more hunching!)
 • Shallow bowl intentionally designed to accommodate cats’ whiskers without agitation
 • Dishwasher-safe and made from BPA-Free Plastic

What’s not:

 • No complaints! Maybe… more cute color options? As I said, obsessed (with this bowl and my cat babies).

Cat Person Mesa Bowl

u003cpu003eThis bowl belongs in the Met—seriously. With four design-forward colorways and its ergonomic build, the Mesa Bowl does it all. Seriously: it’s my favorite part of my kitchen.u003c/pu003e

Mesa Bowl, $45

There’s an accessory that’s been grabbing interior designers’ attention. It’s easy to implement, complementary to all aesthetics, and grounding. Although it isn’t new, per se, this décor item is finding its place as an “it” piece this year. Enter the area rug—a reminder that every room deserves to have a soft landing.

An area rug makes “a world of difference to your room’s overall aesthetic,” says LA-based interior designer Breegan Jane. “They provide visual warmth and easily enhance colors used throughout the space.”

Just as Jane suggests, rugs have a way of enhancing the vibe and function of a room. They add warmth to chilly hardwood or tile floors, and a dose of color to an otherwise minimal room. The key is to find the right one—in texture, size, and material—so it lasts. So where do you start? Designers Breegan Jane, along with Kate Lester of Kate Lester Interiors and Kyra Schulhof of Fayette Studio offer their insight for decorating with an area rug. Plus, we’ve rounded up the best places to buy rugs online.

Tips for Decorating with an Area Rug

#1: Lay It Where You Need Warmth

An area rug is an easy solution for cold feet, says Jane. “Place it under your bed to provide a carpet feel while alleviating the morning chills.” The same goes for where you need a bit of warmth in the living room, bathroom, or even kitchen.

#2: Go for Color or Neutral—or Both

A brightly colored rug will add interest to a space. But if you’re worried this will be too much, follow Lester’s lead and layer a colored runner over a neutral jute rug. “This will give a pop of color and texture but will assure that you don’t overwhelm the room,” she adds.

#3: Aim for Balance

Neutral-colored rugs, particularly made of woven natural material like jute or wool, are ideal for grounding a space “without taking away from fabrics and artwork,” says Lester. If you have bold art and brightly colored walls, a neutral, simple rug is best. “It’s all about balance.”

#4: Consider Your Needs

If you’re placing an area rug in a high-traffic room, such as a living room, Schulhof suggests sourcing one made of an indoor/outdoor material like high-quality nylon or recyclable PET. “Sustainability and eco-friendliness are becoming increasingly important,” she says.

The post Are You Making Any of These Design Mistakes? Here’s How I Fixed Them In My Own Home (Video) appeared first on Camille Styles.

It’s hard to believe that it’s been 13 years since we built our house in Austin. I’ve learned so much through designing these rooms and allowing them to be my canvas for creativity and discovery—and the house has evolved right along with me. Adam and I joke that the minute we think that everything’s finally “done,” we suddenly notice some new corner of the house that needs an update or subtle refresh.

And really, I wouldn’t have it any other way. For me, the best kinds of homes are ever-evolving, and by crafting a home that reflects what’s meaningful to each of us, we can create a place that empowers us to live more authentically, joyfully, and carefree. It doesn’t happen all at once—designing a home that we truly love takes time.

Recently I was looking back at some old photos of the house from when we first moved in, and let’s just say… it’s come a long way.

So, grab a drink, get cozy and watch the video below as I relive some of the biggest design “mistakes” I’ve made to date. And, all the design lessons that I’ve learned to make our home what it is today.

Design mistake: Installing too many built-ins

When we worked with our architect to design our house, we decided to add built-in shelves and cabinetry throughout the offices, living room, and kitchen. It was great for storage—but not so great for adapting and rearranging a room over time. Built-ins are pretty permanent, and not nearly as easy to change up as furniture. A decade later, my tastes had changed and there were certain built-ins that made the spaces feel too closed off and heavy. I wanted to open things up and give a little more spaciousness to the rooms.

The fix: Remove built-ins and embrace a simpler aesthetic

In my home office, we demoed the built-ins and replaced them with a simple desktop that maximizes the space and allows me to restyle it with different furniture and accessories as my taste evolves. It also maximizes the light, and creates a sense of spaciousness and simplicity that feels more aligned with where my style is today.

Kitchen with no windows - design mistakes

Design mistake: Designing the kitchen without any windows

This is probably my biggest design regret, since I spend so much time in the kitchen and it’s the one place in our house that doesn’t get a ton of natural light. To be fair, this design tweak would have meant reconfiguring the entire floor plan of the house. Our current kitchen doesn’t have any walls that connect to the exterior—but I wish that I’d prioritized a big kitchen window when we first started the process of designing our home.

camille styles kitchen - after - custom plaster hood surround

The fix: Lighten things up with white plaster and less shelving

This “fix” illustrates that sometimes, it’s cost-prohibitive and/or unrealistic to really fix the issue, and you just have to go with the next best solution. Our homes will never be perfect in every way, and that’s totally okay. For this challenge, I brainstormed some affordable tweaks I could make to our kitchen that would let in as much light as possible.

First, we replaced our heavy stainless steel hood surround with a custom surround made of white plaster. It’s so much brighter and reflects any natural light coming into the space.

Then, we demoed some of the heavy dark wood shelving to open up the space and allow for more light to reach this back wall of the kitchen. We removed the top shelf and took out a panel of upper cabinetry. You can read more about our mini kitchen remodel here.

Design mistake: Putting a TV over the fireplace

When we built our house, we assumed we “had” to put a TV in the living room because… well, that’s what everyone else did! At the time, it was the only space in the house we’d designated for lounging, so it seemed like the obvious spot. However, this is also the area of the house that you see right when you walk in the front door, and our big flat-screen began to feel like an eyesore that drove my design eye crazy. I didn’t want a black box as the focal point in the main living area of our house.

Plus, in an effort to make the TV look more streamlined, we’d designed the wall with an inset alcove to house the TV and make it flush. But since it wasn’t sized perfectly for the TV we ended up buying, it ended up looking kind of awkward.

2023-living-room-decor-ideas-camille-styles

The fix: Throw out the “rules” and design your space how YOU want to live!

When I asked myself how I really wanted to use our living room, I realized that I wanted it to be a space to unwind, relax, feel inspired, and gather with friends and family. So, we redesigned the layout of the living room with those goals in mind. We removed the TV and filled in the alcove, then plastered over it to match the rest of the wall so we could hang a big piece of statement art.

Then, we converted a little-used room with workout equipment into our family TV area. It’s small and cozy—the perfect spot for our family movie nights.

Matchy matchy living room decor - perfect symmetry - design mistakes

Design mistake: Decorating too matchy-matchy

When I first started out in my design journey, I didn’t have as strong a sense of my own taste as I do now. And since I wasn’t as confident in my own design eye, I found myself following rules that I’d read about or see in other spaces. I thought that everything needed to be symmetrical, and that furniture in a room needed to match! The result was boring, predictable, and lacked any sort of real soul and character.

Camille styles living room, asymmetry, spring branches

The fix: Infuse your home decor with a sense of play

Over time, I gained the confidence to play and have more fun with my decor. Adding texture, playing with asymmetrical compositions, going with what I liked instead of what felt so expected. Now my home feels more multilayered, textural, warm, interesting… and so much more me!

***

The biggest change to my home through the years? Instead of following trends, I start with deciding how I want to live and feel in each space. It’s helped me reprioritize the things I purchase, letting go of the “rules” I once followed and instead putting comfort and connection at the center. Instead of just another Pinterest-worthy space, my bedroom has become my sanctuary, the dining table a place for real-life connection. It’s a journey that I know will keep evolving, just like me.

It’s a design goal we all share: How to make a room look bigger. And not just bigger—but expansive, flowing, and more open. We want our homes to be both beautiful and comfortable, where there’s as much space for our furniture and favorite décor as there is room to breathe and be. One foolproof way to nail this? Paint. There are certain colors that make a room look bigger just from how the pigments reflect or absorb light. It’s design magic.

Stylists Share Tips to Make a Room Look Bigger

One of the coolest aspects of interior paint is how it adds more than simply color to a room. Wash a home office in a blue-toned gray and suddenly there’s an imbued sense of calm. Douse a kitchen’s walls in terra cotta and you can feel the warmth and jovialness instantly. Paint a small living room in a moody iron-gray, which designers Wendy Robinson and Lyndsay Scott recommend below, and the walls will seem like they’ve pulled back to allow more air and light

Simply put, paint can be a magician. A tool that transforms swiftly (and economically!). And in the case of tricking the senses into making a room expand beyond its square footage, paint is Houdini. Read on for three design experts’ top room-stretching paints for the home. Plus, their tricks for taking the color game to the next level.

Image of Diana Ryu’s living room by Teal Thomsen

#1: Paint the Entire Room

Most painting tricks to make your room look bigger involve choosing the right paint color but there are other tricks as well that you can use to make a room feel larger, says designer Lyndsay Scott. The first is painting the room all the same color including the woodwork, ceiling, and door. This trick works best when you oscillate the finish of the paint to add dimension.

“For example, on the walls, we love using Chantilly Lace in an eggshell finish, and also Chantilly Lace on the woodwork and doors but with a satin or semi-gloss finish,” Scotts says. As for the ceiling, Scott and her co-founder and co-designer Wendy Robinson say to continue the use of the same paint color, but lighten it by about 20 percent. “This way, you are less aware of where the walls end and the ceiling begins.”

#2: Opt for an Eggshell or Satin Finish

Natural light makes a room look bigger. This is a fact. So how do you optimize this? By incorporating paints that have a subtle glean that reflects and bounces the light. The subtle gloss of eggshell and satin finishes do just this, capitalizing on rays by putting them to room-widening use. If you want to go bolder, consider a semi-gloss.

#3: Create a Contrast

Opposites attract—and they also complement. Designer Susan Wintersteen suggests creating a look that incorporates more visual impact, which will then draw the eye and create the illusion of more space. One way to do this is by painting cabinetry in a deep moody shade, such as a navy, and contrasting it against fresh white walls.

The Best Paint Colors That Make a Room Look Bigger

#1: Deep Navy

Rich colors have an uncanny ability to add drama to a room, says Susan Wintersteen, CEO and principal of Savvy Interiors. “My preference for making a space feel larger is a deep, moody shade.” These feel grand and luxe, Wintersteen continues, and they ground a room, making it seem larger than it is. Her preference is a navy blue slate that is so deep it borders on black. When you pair this with either a lighter wall or accents, “complemented by warm wood tones and abundant natural light,” the result is timeless, comforting, warm—and ultimately expansive.

Paint Pick: Farrow & Ball Scotch Blue

Best for: Kitchen and living room

greige bedroom, colors that make a room look bigger
Image of Lauren Moore’s home by Justin Chung

#2: Greige

As its name suggests, greige is a neutral color that exists in the middle of gray and beige. I admit: I’ve always been a little wary of this color: Can’t it just be one or the other? But after Jessica Nicastro recommended it for stretching a room’s capacity, I saw greige in a different light. “Greige is timeless and warm,” the founder and principal designer of Jessica Nicastro Design believes. It’s technically a light and bright shade, which naturally adds and bounces light rays. But greige also has the depth of a gray and the earthiness of beige, resulting in a hue that is equal parts cool and warm, and grounding.

Paint Picks: Farrow & Ball Shaded White and Portola Paints & Glazes Piano Room

Best for: Kitchen

clean white living room, colors that make a room look bigger

#3: Clean White

It’s an obvious pick for a reason. Light colors make a room look bigger because they reflect the light, says Wendy Robinson, who offers a little science as to why. “There is a measurement called light Reflectance Value that defines the percentage of light reflected off a painted surface on a scale of one to 100,” the co-founder and co-principal designer behind How We Haven tells me.

An LRV of 100 would be pure white, she continues. “This is way too stark for a room”—but you get the gist. White reflects light and broadens a space’s capacity. Robinson and her co-founder and co-principal designer Lyndsay Scott choose whites that are a bit lower on the LRV scale, say around 80 to 90, so they have a bit more warmth.

Paint Picks: Benjamin Moore Chantilly Lace and Benjamin Moore Dove White

Best for: Any room!

Light Blue-Grey breakfast nook, colors that make a room look bigger

#4: Light Blue-Grey

Staying on the light-hue train, the intersection of pale blue and chalky gray is a winner for enlarging limited space. Because it contains high levels of white, it reflects ample light, as Robinson and Scott tell me. It also has a more serious tone of grey, which continues to lend a grounded vibe. Think of the wide-open sky on a cloudy day: It’s endless and expansive with a hint of texture from the clouds.

Paint Pick: Benjamin Moore Pale Smoke

Best for: A home office or bedroom

violet dining room, colors that make a room look bigger

#5: Violet

A fan-favorite light shade of joy-inducing purple. As Susan Bednar Long of SB Long Interiors tells me, soft violet is a winner for its ability to calm the senses and evoke feelings of positivity, all of which simultaneously opens a room to make it seem bigger. Violet is reminiscent of spring, Long says. A time of growth, regeneration, and bounty.

Paint Pick: C2 African Purple

Best for: Dining Room

I believe in a three-step formula for the perfect home workspace setup. First and foremost is a thoughtful flow, featuring well-placed storage cabinets, ample outlets, and organizational trays. Then, there are the all-important personal touches. But the third element is more elusive. It relies on a sort of vibrancy that keeps your most focused setup from becoming stale. One of the best ways to keep your office vibe elevated: switching things up with cool office desk decor ideas.

They may be simple to swap in and out, but each new office element deserves to be considered. To help you find fresh desk accessories, I scoured the internet for baskets, lamps, and catchalls with a story, so you can stay productive and inspired.

Spring has sprung! What better time to refresh those areas of our lives that are easy to overlook? From our wardrobes to our skincare routines to our homes, everything’s fair game. I love spending a sunny Saturday morning doing a deep clean of my house that goes beyond the dusting, wiping, and vacuuming in my usual weekly rotation. You know what I mean—those things that can build up grime and go unnoticed for months. So, I put together a list of 10 things you forget to clean in your house (if you’re like me)—but that you really, really should.

It’s easy to look at spring cleaning as just another chore to add to your list of to-do’s. But why not flip the script and see it as transforming your home into a sanctuary—a place where you can always find comfort and joy? By taking this more mindful approach to spring cleaning, it becomes an act of self-care. You might be surprised how good it feels to turn over your mattress, vacuum the hard-to-reach cobwebs, and let the sunshine in through newly cleaned windows!

Our spring cleaning refresh is sponsored by Field & Future, H-E-B’s line of household, personal care, and baby items that are made without harsh chemicals. I especially love the fact that I can easily pick up their affordable household products on our weekly grocery runs. (I’m personally hooked on the lavender-scented cleaning products that make my house smell so fresh without harsh chemicals.) Ready to de-germ? Pull on your gloves and turn up the feel-good tunes—let’s do this!

Why not flip the script and see it as transforming your home into a sanctuary—a place where you can always find comfort and joy?

The Top 10 Things You Forget to Clean

Trash Can

By nature of what it is, the trash can is likely one of the dirtiest parts of any home. We all know this to be true, but it’s probably not an area we give a lot of thought to cleaning. Time to address the grime once and for all. Start by putting your emptied trash can in the sink and add a few drops of dish soap. This is where the Field & Future by H-E-B dish soap comes in clutch.

What I love even more than the Honeysuckle & Rose scent? The fact that all of their products, dish soap included, don’t contain any harsh chemicals and are made with 100% plant-based ingredients. Even if you don’t realize it, we’re opening and closing our trash cans many times each day—and you definitely don’t want to be exposed to anything toxic or chemical-based. Once you’ve added your dish soap, simply rub with a sponge and use the sink sprayer to blast away grime.

Oh—and don’t forget the bag for when you start filling up your trash can next! I love Field & Future by H-E-B’s disposable bags. Literally, a trash can liner made from… trash. Clean and sustainable waste? Totally a thing.

Sink Faucet

I can almost guarantee the faucet wasn’t on your list of spring cleaning musts. If possible, make this notoriously hard-to-clean part of your kitchen a little easier by unscrewing the faucet. From there, spray with a multipurpose cleaner and use warm water and a sponge to rinse. For this task, while I’m adamant about doing a thorough job and getting a super-clean result, I’m not about scratching up my sink. Solution? The Field & Future by H-E-B no-scratch pads.

Pro tip: If there’s any grime around the spout (gross, I know), try using a toothbrush to loosen it up. Sparkling clean sudsing seshes await!

Under the Oven

While you can easily let the under-the-oven area of your kitchen go ignored for many many months, I’d recommend ripping off the band-aid and trying this easy trick for a sparkly clean finish. Wet a sponge and spray with multipurpose cleaner. From there, take a deep breath and run the sponge along the bottom edge of your oven. If necessary, wash off your sponge in the sink, spray again, and wipe the floor underneath the oven thoroughly. Finish off with paper towels to dry.

Inside Cabinets

Before organizing your pantry, start with a clean foundation. First thing first, Marie Kondo your cabinets and take out everything! Spray down the shelves and the inside of your cabinet doors with a multipurpose spray. After that, go through with a few swipes from your roll of clean paper towels.

Remote Control

Another one of those things that can easily go by the wayside: your collection of remote controls. Not to dive into a potentially cringe-worthy subject, but let’s pause for a moment to think about all the hands reaching for those remotes every day. Ready to scrub it down? Thought so. Similar to your cabinets, spray your sponge with multipurpose spray and *thoroughly* wipe down your remote. Having a hard time getting into crevices and between buttons? Use a toothpick to remove any grime that’s collected around the buttons. Paper towels for the (wipe-dry) win!

Light Fixtures

Noticing that your light fixtures are shining a little less bright? Either swap out your lightbulbs (which, by the way, is a good thing to add to your spring to-do list!), or get to cleaning out the dust that’s collected over the past few months. Multipurpose spray + paper towels = your ticket to illuminating your home with light.

Craving a more thorough clean? Fill your sink with warm water plus a few drops of dish soap. Remove your fixtures, leave to soak for a few minutes, then rinse and dry. Be sure to dry them completely with paper towels before putting them back in their place.

Throw Blankets

Your throw blankets are probably the most low-maintenance, high-reward clean on this list! Your washing machine is your best friend here. (But really, isn’t it always?) While you’ll definitely want to throw these in the laundry as a part of your deep spring clean, take this as an opportunity to set a reminder on your phone or in your planner to make it a biweekly habit.

Yoga Mat

I won’t lie—it wasn’t until recently that I started thinking long and hard about how working out 3-4 times a week means I’m sweating on my yoga mat… a lot. Like your throw blankets, this is something you should be doing on a more regular basis than your spring cleaning alone. While a multipurpose spray and a wipe-down with paper towels is a quick, surefire way to get a good clean, you can also DIY a dedicated yoga mat cleaner.

Following a 1-to-4 ratio, mix vinegar or witch hazel with water in a spray bottle. I love adding a few drops of Field & Future by H-E-B’s Inhale Exhale Essential Oil. It’s made with eucalyptus, lemon, peppermint, rosemary, and tea tree. In other words, all the natural scents I want to be taking in when I’m doing downward dog.

bathroom sink, indoor plants
toothbrush and toothpaste

Toothbrush Holder

If you’re using a manual toothbrush, your dedicated dish where you throw your brush is likely hiding a lot of residue. And while I’ll spare you the dirty details, residue often means bacteria, viruses, and coliforms (Salmonella and E. coli) are hiding as well. Suds up a sponge with dish soap and rinse your toothbrush holder well in the sink. For a deeper clean, run it through the dishwasher.

Hairbrushes

Last, but definitely not least. While visually, you’ll notice all the hair that gathers on your brush, there’s also product residue, dust mites (gross, I know), dead skin cells, and oils that build up from repeated use. In a sink filled with warm water, mix together a few drops of shampoo or dish soap. Place your hairbrush(es) in the sink and use your hands to swish them about until they get sudsy. Soak for five minutes and rinse until all the soap is gone. Spread a towel on the counter and allow your brushes to dry completely.

Remember that with all of these often-forgotten areas and your big and lofty spring cleaning goals, perfection isn’t the goal. Instead, I try my best to focus on progress and enjoying that squeaky-clean satisfaction of getting through your projects over the weekend when you can.

When you let go of the pressure to get through your spring cleaning as quickly as possible, you get to look forward to a beautiful home that reflects all your hard work.

*Field & Future by H-E-B products are made with recycled or recyclable content, biodegradable formulas or plant-based ingredients and without over 165 harsh chemicals.

Yes, Your Home Does Need a Coffee Nook—Here’s How to Make It Work in Any Sized Space https://camillestyles.com/design/coffee-nook-ideas/ Sat, 11 Mar 2023 11:00:00 +0000 https://camillestyles.com/?p=223876

And how to create one for yourself.

Every morning, my partner quietly crawls out of bed to attend to his first task of the day: making me a coffee. It started as a display of love. He doesn’t drink coffee (bizarre!), but I dream of it when I fall asleep. And now, it’s grown into a ritual. He says he loves the act of grinding the beans, filling the Bialetti, and pouring the steaming liquid into one of my favorite mugs. Plus, he enjoys tucking into our cozy coffee nook—an unexpected spot in our pantry that’s turned into a meditative reprieve.

If our coffee nook is any suggestion that joy can happen anywhere in the home, it’s also a reflection of our times: We all want to slow down. And we all want to experience more mindfulness, even when doing the ordinary. So we can start in the smallest ways, like creating a nook for a morning ritual that feels cozy and purposeful.

Coffee Nook Ideas to Inspire Your New Favorite Morning Routine

Since most of us prepare some warm drink in the morning, be it coffee, matcha, golden milk, or even adaptogenic hot chocolate, we have at least one opportunity a day to turn a simple routine into one that’s meditative and beautiful. The following coffee nook ideas have inspired our little morning spot.

Plus, once the coffee (or tea, or golden milk… ) is made, there’s another chance to feel good—i.e., when you tuck into a cozy corner to drink it.

What Is a Coffee Nook?

Google coffee nook ideas and the terms coffee station, coffee bar, and coffee corner pop up. While there’s no specific definition for the term, a coffee nook is a dedicated place that corrals all the essentials—mugs, beans, spoons, etc.—for making your perfect cup.

That’s exactly what a coffee nook is: a sacred spot to make something meaningful.

I love leaning into the word nook, which the Oxford dictionary defines as a “corner or recess, especially one offering seclusion or security.” Because that’s exactly what a coffee nook is: a sacred spot to make something meaningful.

What are the perks of a coffee nook?

You may wonder, I have a coffee maker, why do I need a dedicated nook for it? I think about this the same way I do any mindful practice: By creating a safe and beautiful spot for something, we infuse more meaning and intention into it. Even more, everything we put in our bodies deserves a dose of good energy. Taking the time to make our coffee or tea with care results in greater pleasure and flavor.

Essentially, it’s about being present. Camille put it best: “It’s those simple little cues that speak to my senses, reminding me to be present and acknowledge the moment as sacred,” she says of greeting the day.

By creating a safe and beautiful spot for something, we infuse more meaning and intention into it.

How do you create a coffee nook?

First, find a place that speaks to you. Pay attention to your rhythms in the morning: Is there a quiet corner or spot on the counter that you always visit? Claim an area that feels good.

Next, place your coffee or tea maker, a favorite mug or two, a milk frother (if needed), and any accouterments, such as sugar or honey. I love to put all of this on a beautiful tray, if possible. Doing so keeps any clutter contained and marks the nook.

Where do you drink your coffee?

Once you’ve made your cup, stay with the moment. Find a place that allows you to savor those minutes as you sip. I love interior designer Maria Wu’s advice for finding the perfect place to enjoy your cup: “I like to observe the habits of a cat which generally translates to where the warmth of the sun streams into the space the strongest in the morning,” says Wu. “The sun energizes and provides warmth—and having that quiet energy allows for one to ease into the day.”

As a near-constant Zillow lurker, there are a few things friends often hear me mutter under my breath. An “Ooh, original hardwoods” here, a “Nice, soaking tub” there, but the most coveted of all the design detail remarks: built-in shelving. And though the clean white walls of the open concept era may have wiped out many a built-in, the instant character of the cozy classic is easy to create on your own. To help you find the right fit for your space, we narrowed down the best bookshelves in the game to achieve the lived-in, literary look in 2023.

How to Style Your Bookshelves

The best bookshelves are hardworking additions to your space. They add storage, give the illusion of higher ceilings, and offer plenty of square footage for a styled display. But all that runway can lead to clutter if you’re not careful. Our home design editor Stacey Lindsey’s has advice.

“Typically, the tip for a stylish bookshelf is as follows: include one-third books, one-third home décor accessories, and one-third negative space,” she writes. “I’ve learned this rule of thumb from interviewing countless interior designers.”

For more ideas on how to style intentionally (while making it look effortless), revisit our story featuring interior designer Javaneh Pirooz’s wealth of thoughtful tips.
