There are so many things to love about summer: backyard barbecues, warm-weather activities, and longer days in the sun. But as a person with combination skin that leans on the oily side, I get the summer scaries at the thought of putting on makeup that will, by the end of the day, melt into a mess. Despite my lightweight summer lineup of skin tints and sheer coverage, my skin can’t seem to hold onto a look for dear life. And who wants to cake on the powder in the summer? That’s why the best primers for oily skin have become my go-to solution.

But of course, I always want to be working with the best of the best. And with new products releasing all the time, it’s important to do my research and try out what’s available. So, after lots of deep dives and scouring through skincare social media accounts, I gathered together some of the best primers for oily skin and put them to the test.

How We Determined the Best Primers for Oily Skin

There are a lot of primers on the market. For oily skin gals, not just any primer will do. Whether you’re a fan of matte or dewy looks, your oily skin can sabotage even your most low-maintenance looks. So finding the right primer for oily skin is key.

To discover which primers are actually worth the hype, I tested them based on:

 • Texture: What does it feel like?
 • Hold: How well does it hold makeup throughout the day/night?
 • Key Ingredients: What is in it? Does it contain other skincare ingredients I like?
 • Skin Type: Is it made for oily skin?
 • Size: How much bang you get for your buck
The best primers for oily skin.

A cover up for all occasions.

The post These 9 Drugstore Concealers Are Recommended By Our Editors—And They’re All Under $15 appeared first on Camille Styles.

I have a decently healthy relationship with aging. I’m okay with a forehead wrinkle or two and even welcome the crinkled charm of crow’s feet. But I absolutely draw the line at dark undereye circles. I won’t leave the house without touching them up, an obsession that’s cost me a pretty penny in cover-up. So this year, to be a little kinder on my wallet, I vowed to discover the best drugstore undereye concealers available.

In addition to polling the Camille Styles team, I scoured the web for glowing reviews and ratings, ultimately landing on nine absolute bangers of undereye concealers—with four true standouts—priced mercifully under $15.

Go ahead, treat your eyes to something fairly priced.

How We Landed on the Best Undereye Concealers

I’m a makeup minimalist, but I take my concealer seriously. When I play it right, I can usually skip the foundation entirely. Because a good concealer should be able to literally cover it all—from redness and uneven skin tone to some light contouring—in addition to undereye bags.

My go-to concealer for a while has been the Brightening Concealer from Gee Beauty. After taking a master class from the founders (where I learned you should absolutely, despite popular belief, be putting concealer on your eyelids and inner eye corners), I was hooked on the luminous, vitamin-packed liquid. But at $38 a pop and with the rate I apply concealer, I was looking to pepper in a drugstore dupe to treat my dark circles.

Apart from my coworkers’ trusted recommendations, I purchased each product and gave them all a fair whirl on the ol’ eye area, aggressively judging their consistency, coverage, and creasing along the way.

Most Hydrating: NYX Photogenic Concealer Wand

This was really light and lovely. I also deeply appreciate how thin and precise the wand is (many of the wands in our roundup are almost comically large).

What’s to Love: My skin felt hydrated, I never had to worry about creasing, and the product blended seamlessly into my skin.

What’s Not: The NYX concealer is great for layering, but if you like full coverage, you’ll probably blow through this bottle quickly.

NYX Photogenic Concealer Wand

Most Lightweight: e.l.f. Hydrating Camo Concealer

“Y’all, I thought I had left behind my e.l.f. products in high school, but this concealer gets the job done. While I love the more expensive picks in my medicine cabinet (shoutout to Rare Beauty and Wander Beauty), this affordable option gives me the same lightweight finish plus added hydration. Whereas other products in the past have dried out within an hour—highlighting my lack of sleep rather than concealing it—this pick works perfectly with my tinted moisturizer for an all-day, dewy finish.” — Isabelle, Managing Editor

$7

Best On-the-Go: Maybelline Instant Age Rewind

“This one is always packed in my purse and makeup bag for an on-the-go application. Not only does it hide dark circles, it’s super hydrating and the sponge application makes it apply so much more naturally and evenly distributed. I never feel like I’m wearing a concealer when I use this.” — Kelly, Contributing Editor

Maybelline Instant Age Rewind

$8.99

Best for Layering: Neutrogena Hydro Boost Hydrating Concealer

If you dig a matte finish, this is the concealer for you. It went on beautifully and would be so easy to layer or reapply throughout the day. I love it so much, I even included a picture of myself below (my right eye has been Neutrogena-ed).

What’s to Love: The finish is superb and I love the lipstick-like shape that makes it easy to apply on-the-go. An instant purse staple.

What’s Not: Given its name and its hyaluronic acid core, the Neutrogena concealer wasn’t nearly as hydrating as I would expect.

Sorry for the jump scare! This is me with no makeup—apart from old mascara and the Neutrogena concealer on the left eye in this picture.

Neutrogena Hydro Boost Hydrating Concealer

For Need Full-Coverage on Acne-Prone Skin: L’Oreal Paris Infallible Full Wear Concealer

A little goes a long way with this one. It’s full coverage to the max and isn’t going to go anywhere. L’Oreal’s concealer went on a little drier than I would have liked, but the product is designed for oily, acne-prone skin.

What’s to Love: The full-coverage concealer can cover everything you want in one easy swoop and would be a great option if you’re looking to skip the foundation.

What’s Not: I didn’t love the way it settled—it felt almost a little sticky. And given how the large wand swipes on at once, it can feel a bit like face paint.

L’Oreal Paris Infallible Full Wear Concealer

$6.39

For Full-Coverage That Also Hydrates: COVERGIRL TruBlend Undercover Concealer

I didn’t know it was possible, but I got a shade that was too light for my deeply pale skin. Now I know just how porcelain concealers can go. That being said, the consistency was beautiful, offering the same full coverage as the L’Oreal Infallible concealer with a bit more hydration.

What’s to Love: The coverage is killer and there was nary a crease in sight as the day went on.

What’s Not: The product is thick and the wand is huge, making it a little tougher to blend and be precise.

COVERGIRL TruBlend Undercover Concealer

$10.19

For Covering Acne: Makeup Revolution Conceal and Define

The thick, full-coverage product takes a bit of work to blend in, but it may be worth it for the dose of anti-inflammatory niacinamide you get with each drop.

What’s to Love: Covering up blemishes with concealer can feel like you’re doing more harm than good, but you can feel a little better thanks to Makeup Revolution’s niacinamide.

What’s Not: While it looks great, it can feel a little too matte (almost chalky) after sitting on the skin for a while.

Makeup Revolution Conceal & Define Concealer

$7

For Easy, Lightweight Coverage: Milani Conceal + Perfect

This dependable concealer gets the job done with ease, though it might go best with a bit of moisturizer first.

What’s to Love: It’s mixed with vitamin E and is cruelty-free.

What’s Not: There’s a bit of a paint-like smell going on here… based on some Amazon reviews, I know I’m not alone in thinking this.

Milani Conceal + Perfect Longwear Concealer

$9.24

For a Clean, Luxurious Feel: Catrice True Skin Concealer

This has a beautiful silky feel to it without being greasy. Unlike the Neutrogena stick, which I truly loved, I can actually feel the hyaluronic acid in this one.

What’s to Love: This swiped on so luxuriously. It’s hard to believe it’s just $7.

What’s Not: That being said, it also swipes on thick, and can take a bit of work to blend in.

A beach bag essential.

The post Editor-Tested, Dermatologist-Approved—These Are the 10 Best Sunscreens of 2023 appeared first on Camille Styles.

I live in Los Angeles, so naturally most of my conversations begin with some quip about the weather. So far this year, where it’s rained more in LA than in Seattle, everyone in the city has been floundering. For months, plans were canceled, raincoats were purchased, and umbrellas were excavated out from the depth of our storage containers. We may have kept up with our SPF face routine, but the best sunscreen for our body wasn’t on anyone’s radar.

However, now that we’re finally getting some sun, we’re making the most of it. Going to the beach is like a sport in Los Angeles. Everyone has their favorite spot, and most of us have a beach bag packed and ready to go on any occasion. As a beauty editor, it won’t surprise anyone that mine contains a mini pouch filled with beach-ready skin and body care. Here’s what’s inside:

How to Find the Best Sunscreen for Your Body

When it comes to your face, you can pick between a thousand different formulas made for different skin tones and skin types. But when it comes to your body, most sunscreens seem to be sticky, streaky goops that smell like chemicals. No, thanks.

In my time around the block—or the beach, as it were—I’ve tried many body sunscreens. Some have made their way into my beach bag, others have never seen the light of day. And while I usually evaluate my body products based on touch and texture, I consulted a dermatologist to discover what I should really be looking for in the best sunscreen for body.

Dr. Caroline Robinson is a board-certified medical and cosmetic dermatologist, with subspecialty expertise in alopecia, preventative skincare, and ethnic skin dermatology. She is also the founder of Tone Dermatology.

“There are considerable differences in the products available now with many great options,” says Dr. Rogers. “I always tell my patients finding the right sunscreen is like finding the right pair of jeans; you have to try out a few, and it can take a while, but once you find the one you like, you will love it and want to wear it every day.”

My Criteria for Determining the Best Sunscreens

After our conversation, I established these criteria for the best body sunscreens:

 • Key Ingredients: What’s in it?
 • Type of protection: Is it a physical/mineral or chemical sunscreen?
 • SPF: What level of protection does it offer?
 • Size: How much do you get? And (important!) can you pack it in your carry-on?
 • Water Resistance: How long does it stay effective in the water?

Ready to dive into the best sunscreens? Read on to discover the products that offer the best protection —and that don’t feel icky while shielding your skin.

What are the most important factors to consider when selecting a sunscreen for the body?

I always recommend choosing sunscreen formulas that are non-comedogenic and free from fragrances, dyes, parabens, oil, or certain chemicals like oxybenzone. For daily use, use sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. On days when you are out in the sun for long periods of time, apply an SPF 50 or above.

What are the differences between chemical and physical sunscreens for the body?

To further explain, mineral sunscreen contains active ingredients like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide that sit on top of the skin’s surface to deflect and scatter harmful UV rays. Chemical sunscreens contain UVB- and UVA-absorbing chemicals that convert UV rays into heat through a chemical reaction, which then releases the heat.

What ingredients should we look for in sunscreens for the body?

Most drugstore sunscreens contain a combination of chemicals that provide reasonable UVA and UVB protection. While using these products is definitely better than not using anything, here’s the rub: these are chemicals our bodies absorb. Fortunately, they are well-studied and labeled by the FDA as non-toxic. And, despite the reports, they do not cause cancer and have not been shown to cause hormone disruption in humans.

Zinc provides the most comprehensive protection against Ultraviolet B (UVB) rays that cause sunburns and Ultraviolet A (UVA) rays that cause brown spots and wrinkles. It has a reputation for being thick and white, making people look ghost-like, but an increasing number of sunscreens with zinc are becoming more cosmetically elegant. And unlike the chemical sunscreen ingredients discussed above, zinc is a naturally occurring mineral, not absorbed by your body. Even the nano-sized particles are safe, as confirmed by recent studies. Titanium dioxide is another good physical sunscreen, but it only protects from UVB rays, so products need to have zinc even if they have titanium dioxide.

Are there any sunscreens for the body that are safe for sensitive skin?

If you have sensitive skin, I suggest opting for a mineral sunscreen as chemical sunscreens can sometimes irritate and exacerbate existing conditions. Oil-free sunscreens will be best for those with acne-prone skin. If you are going to be sweating or coming into contact with water, I recommend using a water-resistant sunscreen for longer-lasting protection.

How often should you apply sunscreen to your body, and how much should you use?

Mineral sunscreens immediately protect your skin upon contact, but chemical sunscreen should be applied at least half an hour before going out into the sun since it requires some time to absorb.

It’s best to reapply every hour to hour and a half if you are participating in activities that cause sunscreen to wear off like swimming or anything that prompts sweating. If just sitting in the sun without excessive sweating (not dermatologist recommended!), a good rule of thumb is to reapply every two hours.

What SPF level is best for body sunscreen?

Studies have shown that higher levels of SPF offer more protection than lower SPF, so you should use SPF 50 or above. The minimum SPF recommended by the American Academy of Dermatology is SPF 30.

The Best Sunscreen for the Body

You never know what you like until you’ve tried it. And I’ve tried a lot of different options—including some of the most viral sunscreens out there right now. But are they worth the hype? Sunscreen isn’t the most glamorous product on the market, so when people rave about one, I’ve generally found that it lives up to my expectations. Here are some of my favorites that I’ve tried, tested, and endlessly researched.

Best Overall: Bask Suncare SPF 30 Lotion & Continuous Spray

The wear and tear on the packaging says it all: this duo is a staple in my beach bag. From the lotion’s creamy texture to the spray’s refreshing mist, this is a set that makes me excited to apply my daily sunscreen. Perfect for application and reapplication, it’s proof that the best sunscreen is the sunscreen you’ll actually wear.

Whenever I apply it around a group of friends, they perk up at the light coconut and vanilla scent. Invariably, they ask what sunscreen is that? and I respond by spraying the group with a cloud of my staple sunscreen. No gatekeeping here. It’s the brand I recommend to everyone.

 • Key Ingredients: Avobenzone, Homosalate, Octisalate, Octocrylene, Aloe, Cocoa Butter
 • Type of Protection: Chemical

 • Size: 5.5 fl oz and 4 fl oz

Best Sunscreen Oil: Supergoop! Glow Oil

Summer is the season for glowy skin. I love slathering on silky body oil after the shower, deeply nourishing my skin while giving it an iridescent look. Sometimes, it feels disheartening to apply sunscreen and dull the effects of my body oil. No more! The Supergoop! Glow Oil glides on smooth and dries fast for a shine and shield that last all day. I wear this when I’m laying out by the pool or beach. While the formula is lightweight and soaks into the skin fast, the oil does transfer to clothes if you don’t let it dry for long enough. You’ve been warned.

 • Key Ingredients: Avobenzone, Homosalate, Octisalate, Octocrylene, Shea Butter, Coconut Oil
 • Type of Protection: Chemical
 • SPF: 50
 • Size: 5 fl oz
 • Water-Resistance: 80 minutes

Supergoop! Glow Oil

With a mix of chemical protectants and natural plant and seed oils, this sunscreen is both protective and nourishing. The spray bottle makes it easy to reapply for more shine and protection throughout the day.

Best Dry Oil Sunscreen: Cay Skin Isle Body Oil SPF 30

Founded by supermodel Winne Harlow, Cay Skin has burst onto the body care scene with a bang. And though it’s new to my arsenal, I already know it’ll be here for a long time. It’s a sumptuous blend of SPF with sea moss and squalane—buzzy body ingredients that I love in all my products. This body oil is no exception. Unlike the Supergoop! oil, this one does not transfer onto clothes and has more of a hydrating effect. This is my pick to wear every day since it absorbs into the skin so easily. It’s also not water-resistant, so I use my other sunscreens for more heavy-duty occasions like exercise or beach days.

 • Key Ingredients: Avobenzone, Homosalate, Octisalate, Octocrylene, Sea Moss, Squalane
 • Type of Protection: Chemical
 • SPF: 30
 • Size: 3.7 fl oz
 • Water-Resistance: None

Cay Skin Isle Body Oil

Skin-nourishing ingredients like sea moss, squalane, and other hydrating oils come together in this ultra-light body oil with a transfer-free texture and SPF 30 protection.

Best Texture: Vacation Classic Whip

If you want a sunscreen that you’re excited to incorporate into your morning routine, look no further. With its whipped cream-inspired packaging, it’s a whimsical way to start your morning. You won’t forget it, that’s for sure. And I’ve tried this one myself (as well as other sunscreens from the brand) so I can assure you: it’s not just a gimmick. Yes, it went viral on TikTok, but the actual sunscreen is a creamy, easy-to-apply texture. None of the stickiness you associate with the sweet treat that it’s inspired by. My only warning: keep this one on your shelf and out of your day bag. The spray nozzle is a little volatile—something I learned the hard way when it exploded in my bag. Definitely keep in a cool, dry place.

Best Face and Body Sunscreen: Biossance Squalane + Zinc Sheer Mineral Sunscreen

Mineral sunscreens can be touch and go. No matter how long you rub them in, many of them leave an irritating white cast that feels sticky on your skin and ruins your beach photos. The first time I tried this sheer mineral sunscreen, I was immediately converted. In seconds, it disappears into your skin with no white cast—even on my dark skin. Thanks to Biossance’s signature squalane base, the formula is lightweight enough for the face and durable enough for the body. Due to its small packaging, I like using it on my face, and bringing it down to my décolletage and chest since those areas see the most sun.

 • Key Ingredients: Zinc Oxide, Squalane
 • Type of Protection: Physical
 • SPF: 30
 • Size: 1.7 fl oz
 • Water-Resistance: None

Biossance Squalane + Zinc Sheer Mineral Sunscreen

Zinc, a physical sun protectant, creates a barrier between your skin and the sun while squalane supports skin health in this sheer, invisible sunscreen.

$34

Best Gel: Kopari Sun Sheild Body Glow Gel

Somewhere between a lotion and an oil is a gel. If you’re seeking something iridescent, this Kopari gel shimmers when it catches the light to create a glowy effect while protecting your skin. It acts as a serum, sun protectant, and glow oil without any tackiness and residue buildup. It absorbs fast to prevent transfer and oiliness, making it sweat-free and perfect for oilier skin.

 • Key Ingredients: Avobenzone, Homosalate, Octisalate, Octocrylene
 • Type of Protection: Chemical
 • SPF: 50
 • Size: 5.1 fl oz
 • Water-Resistance: 40 minutes

Kopari Sun Sheild Body Glow Gel

Hydrate and glow with this shimmering sunscreen that absorbs fast and leaves behind an iridescent shine without any stickiness. Avocado and coconut oil also provide intense moisture.

Dermatologist Favorite: EltaMD UV Pure Broad-Spectrum SPF 47

I’m an Elta MD fan because, like many lovers of the brand, I had it recommended by a derm. But most people—myself included, until recently—grossly underappreciate its potential as a body sunscreen. Formulated for the face and body, it’s gentle and fuss-free. For sensitive skin, eczema, or easily irritated skin, this is a great pick.

 • Key Ingredients: Zinc Oxide, Titanium Dioxide, Vitamin C
 • Type of Protection: Physical
 • SPF: 47
 • Size: 4 fl oz
 • Water-Resistance: 80 minutes

EltaMD UV Pure Broad-Spectrum SPF 47

This dermatologist’s favorite for the face and body is a lightweight mineral sunscreen fortified with two different types of physical sun protectants, zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. Plus, vitamin C helps prevent signs of aging and protects from environmental damage.

$32

Best for Sensitive Skin: CeraVe Hydrating Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50 Body Lotion

You can’t go wrong with CeraVe. For anyone with sensitive skin, or just seeking a simple but effective sun solution, CeraVe’s mineral sunscreen physically shields your skin while deeply hydrating your skin barrier. Its ceramide-rich formula makes it a powerful moisturizer, while hyaluronic acid hydrates for all-day softness. Experience no irritation as this formula creates a protective barrier around your skin to reflect UVA and UVB rays.

 • Key Ingredients: Zinc Oxide, Titanium Dioxide, Hyaluronic Acid, Ceramides
 • Type of Protection: Physical
 • SPF: 50
 • Size: 5 fl oz
 • Water-Resistance: None

CeraVe Hydrating Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50 Body Lotion

Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide create a physical shield for your skin while skin-favorites hyaluronic acid and ceramides nourish and fortify your body’s skin barrier, making it a perfect solution for sensitive skin.

Best Drugstore Sunscreen: Sun Bum Original SPF 50 Sunscreen Lotion

Approved by The Skin Cancer Foundation, this sunscreen is by beach bums, for beach bums. If you spend a lot of time in this sun, this creamy coverage offers hydration and protection. Vitamin E, a potent antioxidant, helps prevent premature aging and damage from environmental stressors. All this comes in one affordable package, lining the shelves at your local drugstore, waiting for you to make it a summer staple.

 • Key Ingredients: Avobenzone, Homosalate, Octisalate, Octocrylene, Vitamin E
 • Type of Protection: Chemical
 • SPF: 50
 • Size: 6 fl oz
 • Water-Resistance: 80 minutes

Sun Bum Original SPF 50 Sunscreen Lotion

Simple but effective, this sunscreen offers moisturizing sun care with antioxidant-rich vitamin E. Slather it on liberally for all-day SPF 50 sun protection.

$18

Best Body Sunscreen for Darker Skin Tones: Black Girl Sunscreen for Face and Body

The white cast on many body sunscreens is especially problematic for anyone with more melanated skin. For people with darker skin tones, physical sunscreens have historically been out of the question. We either have to deal with a super obvious white film or forgo sunscreen. (Perhaps this is what perpetuated the myth that melanin-rich skin doesn’t even need sunscreen.) But don’t believe it! Darker skin does need sun protection. And finally, brands like Black Girl Sunscreen are creating quality, hydrating products for the face and body that shield your skin without leaving any white residue behind.

 • Key Ingredients: Avobenzone, Homosalate, Octisalate, Octocrylene, Carrot Juice, Sun Flower Oil, Cacao
 • Type of Protection: Chemical
 • SPF: 30
 • Size: 3 fl oz
 • Water-Resistance: 80 minutes

Black Girl Sunscreen for Face and Body

This moisturizing sunscreen contains rich skincare ingredients like avocado, jojoba, and cacao to deeply nourish your skin and promote healing, softness, and even complexion. Meanwhile, carrot juice contains vitamin C to even breakouts and boost melanin, while sunflower oil calms inflammation from sunburn and irritation.

As creative as they come.

Kate Arends doesn’t want to be put in a box. In a world that encourages marketing ourselves as a brand, Kate is hesitant to constrict herself to a niche. Because what’s the point of trying to encompass our wants, quirks, dreams, and accomplishments to a single elevator pitch if those thirty seconds could never dream of containing our multitudes?

It’s with her many identities—designer, mother, founder, and creative director of Wit & Delight—that Kate has built her brand. In images, videos, and blog posts, Kate captures and exudes the creative grace of a life oriented toward beauty.

And while I find myself audibly gasping, oohing, and awing at Instagram post after post, the experience feels unlike any scroll I’ve taken through an influencer’s page. There’s no attempt as aspiration—to show a life clearly out of reach. Instead, woven throughout the stunning interiors, inspiring words, and intimate vignettes, there’s a quiet knowing that with a simple shift in perspective, we can all uncover the same magic Kate has found for herself.

Waking Up With Kate Arends

Of course, this isn’t to discount her originality. Take a spin through Kate’s St. Paul home and you’ll find woodland-inspired wallpaper, velvet tufted couches, and colors only a well-trained eye can coordinate. We caught up with Kate on a snowy Monday in Minnesota. And while we expected spring-like weather when we got off the plane, Kate’s home proved to be respite enough.

I’ve been running a business long enough to realize it doesn’t get easier, you just get more comfortable with discomfort.

Kate is proof that no one’s success looks the same. As one of the original bloggers in the design space, Kate is familiar with the challenges and triumphs of building a career online. With products and collections at some of the biggest retailers (Target, Anthropologie, and West Elm are all on her roster), one might think she logs long hours every day at her desk. But Kate is consistent with exercise and time outdoors, prioritizes play, and carves out intentional time with her family.

Curious how she gets it all done? We sat down with Kate to learn the ins and outs of her creative career—plus the routines and rituals that inspire her work and help her days unfold with ease.

Tell us about your career and starting a business. What has life been like as an entrepreneur?

Crazy? Always evolving? I’ve been running a business long enough to realize it doesn’t get easier, you just get more comfortable with discomfort. And I’m thankful for this lesson, thankful for the lesson in resilience. I try to make my schedule both flexible and disciplined. I’m also thankful that continuing to learn and challenge myself to evolve is part of the job. Regardless of what I’m working on, there is rarely a dull moment.

What has been your biggest learning over the past year?

I’ve learned to let go of a lot of trying to do it all. When it came to possibilities for our business and my life, I once liked to keep all doors slightly ajar just in case they came to fruition. I’ve realized that when every opportunity is important, it can be hard to figure out what matters most. So I’ve been saying no more than ever.

In a few words, how would you describe your personal style?

Classic with a splash of whimsy.

What does a typical day look like for you?

6-8 am: I typically get up at 6 for a workout before getting the kids ready for school. If I can peek at my email, I try to do it at this time.

8:30-11 am: I try to get 90 minutes of focused work done. Depending on what I have going on that week, it could be designing a product line or working on a project for our home (e.g., making product selections, deciding on paint colors, creating punch lists for a contractor). A few days a week I dedicate this time to writing for our site, Wit & Delight, and newsletter, House Call.

11 am-3 pm: Lunch, email, and meetings. I use this time for 1-1 consultations on Tuesdays and Thursdays, planning and production meetings with my team, tasks related to upcoming projects, etc. I also often take new business calls during this time.

3-5 pm: I am either shooting content for our channels, picking up whatever priority project is hot that week, or tending to things around the house.

5-8 pm: Family time!

8-10 pm: Reading or catching up on emails.

What time is your wake-up call? And how much sleep do you usually get?

6 am. I’m in bed by 9 pm and usually asleep by 10-1030 pm after doing some reading.

What’s the first thing you do when you wake up?

Drink water and start my workout. I alternate between pilates, HIIT workouts, and strength training.

What rituals set you up for success?

At certain times in my life, I’ve had strict morning routines; at other times, there was no routine other than surviving (hello, years when I had two kids under two). What I’ve come to learn is you have to be flexible with your time and religiously strict about what makes life move smoothly. That means prioritizing daily movement for my mental and physical health, deep work (something that moves my business and goals forward), and quality time with the people I love. Everything else gets done if time and energy allow. It’s kind of the antithesis of what I see a lot of successful people do for their routines, but it’s one I can live with. And isn’t a routine that’s sustainable most likely to remain a routine? I think so.

What I’ve come to learn is you have to be flexible with your time and religiously strict about what makes life move smoothly.

Describe your morning beauty routine from start to finish:

I brush my teeth, then I wash my face with Indie Lee Brightening Cleanser and apply the SkinCeuticals vitamin C serum. After that, I use Beauty of Joseon Sunscreen mixed with Drunk Elephant bronzing drops and apply my makeup.

Relief Sun, Rice + Probiotics Facial Sunscreen, $14.95

Drunk Elephant Anti-Pollution Sunshine Drops

What do you eat for breakfast?

I drink hot water with lemon. Then I make a cup of coffee and usually eat an apple or make oatmeal (¼ cup oats in ¾ cup water, simmer for five minutes then top with flax seeds, hemp seeds, maple syrup, and walnuts).

What will we always find in your refrigerator?

Fresh herbs, kale, good cheese, eggs, olives, salami, mustards (dijon, brown, hot deli), pickled things (hot peppers, cauliflower, carrots), and big tubs of beans and rice for making bowls throughout the week.

What are your morning rituals?

I never skip coffee or my skincare routine.

What are your favorite books?

It’s often changing but a couple that I have read more than once in the past two years:

kate arends wit and delight wake up call

What’s always on your nightstand?

Nivea Creme, Bag Balm, whatever I’m reading, and AirPods.

NIVEA Creme

NIVEA Creme, $11.56

Bag Balm Hand Moisturizer

Bag Balm Hand Moisturizer, $8.49

Apple AirPods Pro

AirPods Pro, $199.99

What’s your favorite getting-ready soundtrack?

Lately, it’s been Midnights by Taylor Swift. But I am always making playlists and giving recommendations.

Do you work out in the morning?

Yes, at least 30 minutes of movement. I rotate between HIIT, pilates, and cycling. I take at least three hour-long walks a week, but in the winter I do them in the afternoons due to lack of sunlight and negative temps.

What’s your daily uniform?

I work from home but I get dressed daily. A uniform for me in the winter would be a cream babaà sweater, Levi’s vintage 501s, red socks, and black loafers.

If you had one extra hour every morning, how would you use it?

I would read, write, or design things just for myself.

What are one or two things you do every day to live a more joyful life?

You’ll never have enough time to get it all done, so I focus on what matters to me when I’m overwhelmed. Sometimes this means closing my email or ripping up the to-do list. I ask myself what can be done to ensure I’m working toward the future I want for myself and my family. It makes what’s actually important crystal clear. Knowing that time is a finite resource can be overwhelming in itself, but it can also help bring your priorities into focus.

kate arends wit and delight wake up call

Shop Kate’s office.

If you could pin your success down to one thing, what would that be?

Never giving up on myself. And never being afraid to pivot.

Sentence Finishers:

I never leave the house without: my wallet.

If there were more hours in the day, I would: spend them fostering curiosity—in nature, in a museum, and playing with my kids. I wish we had more time to just play.

Healthiest morning habit: being grateful to have another day on this earth.

Worst morning habit: thinking I have to follow a strict routine to be successful.

One thing I want to be known for is: my courage and empathy.

The one thing I fear is: failing to raise my children to handle adulthood.

When I feel that fear, I: remember the best thing I can do is set a good example with my own actions.

The book I always recommend: Atomic Habits.

One trait you need to succeed in life: resilience.

Bath or shower? And what’s your favorite shower/bath product? Bath, but we don’t have one at the moment! I love this conditioning rinse by R+Co.

Should I Be Using Retinol On My Body? A Dermatologist Weights In https://camillestyles.com/beauty/best-retinol-body-products/ Tue, 25 Apr 2023 10:30:00 +0000 https://camillestyles.com/?p=229448

Hello, summer skin.

The post Should I Be Using Retinol On My Body? A Dermatologist Weights In appeared first on Camille Styles.

]]>

Retinol is somehow both one of the most popular and misunderstood skincare ingredients. While skincare experts and beauty lovers sing its praises, beginners might be wary of such a potent ingredient. Is retinol safe? How do you incorporate it into your skincare routine? And what about the dreaded “purge?” Believe me, I’ve been there. When it comes to what you put on your face, it pays to be cautious. But once you experience the transformative powers of retinol, you’ll never go back. You’ll probably want to use it everywhere. So it’s no surprise that retinol is popping up in all the buzziest body care bottles.

One of my favorite skincare hacks is using potent ingredients on my body as well as my face. From swiping glycolic acid across my underarms to using hyaluronic acid on my hands, I love to show my body a little extra love. Plus, our bodies can handle more active ingredients at higher concentrations. In fact, the skin on your body often needs more strong products to see a difference. That’s where retinol comes in.

The Best Retinol Body Products: What to Know

Using retinol is the closest thing you’ll get to bathing in the fountain of youth. It supercharges cell turnover to speed up collagen production, keeps your skin firm, and smooths fine lines and pigmentation. All these things happen to your body, as well as your face, which is why it seems like all the cutting-edge brands are releasing retinol body products.

To discover how to use the best retinol body products, I spoke to Dr. Michelle Henry, a board-certified dermatologist at Skin & Aesthetics Surgery of Manhattan. She took me through the ins and outs of how to use retinol for the body and what to look for in the best retinol body products.

Michelle Henry, MD

Michelle Henry, MD, is a board-certified dermatologist and Harvard-trained Mohs surgeon. She provides exceptional care for her patients at Skin & Aesthetic Surgery of Manhattan in the Midtown East neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City. Her areas of expertise include high-risk skin cancer treatments, aesthetic surgery, and treating skin of color, and she specializes in Mohs micrographic, reconstructive, and cosmetic surgery.

The Benefits of Retinol Body Products

Retinol, a type of vitamin A, provides several benefits to the body, including improved skin health, bone growth and development, and maintaining eye health. It has been shown to stimulate collagen production, which can enhance the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and skin texture. Additionally, it can reduce acne, unclog pores, and improve uneven skin tone. Retinol has also been used to treat skin conditions such as psoriasis, eczema, and hyperpigmentation.

Side Effects

Potential side effects of retinol include skin irritation, redness, peeling, and sensitivity to sunlight. To avoid these side effects, it is recommended to start with a low concentration of retinol and gradually increase the dosage.

How to Apply Retinol Body Products

Regarding the frequency and application of retinol body products, it is best to follow the manufacturer’s instructions. It is generally recommended to use retinol products at night since they can increase the skin’s sensitivity to sunlight.

The Difference Between Retinol Body Creams and Body Lotions

It is important to note that retinol body creams and body lotions have different consistencies. Creams are thicker and more hydrating, while lotions are more suitable for people with oily skin. The choice between a cream or lotion ultimately depends on personal preference and skin type.

The Best Retinol Body Products for Sensitive Skin

For individuals with sensitive skin, it is recommended to use a lower concentration of retinol and start with a patch test before using it on a larger area. It is also important to avoid using retinol with other potentially irritating skincare ingredients, such as alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) and beta-hydroxy acids (BHAs). The Naturium retinol body lotion as well as Olay Retinol body lotions are great options.

Naturium Skin-Renewing Retinol Body Lotion

Skin-Renewing Retinol Body Lotion, $27.99

Olay Nighttime Body Wash w/ Retinol

Nighttime Body Wash w/ Retinol, $34.99

Who should avoid retinol body treatments?

People with skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, or rosacea should be careful with using retinol body products since it may exacerbate these conditions. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should also avoid using retinol products due to their potentially harmful effects on the developing fetus. Consulting a dermatologist before using retinol body products is always advisable.

The Best Retinol Body Products, Tested and Reviewed

With a doctor’s recommendation in tow, I tried some of the most popular retinol body washes and viral retinol body lotions for myself. I looked for products that paired their retinol formulas with other skin-renewing active ingredients. I also investigated which skin type each product was formulated for and whether or not it was a cruelty-free formula.

My own trials and additional research gave me a 360 view of the exciting, emerging world of retinol body treatments—from body washes to serums and scrubs. And it also gave me smoother, clearer skin in just a few washes. So believe the hype, and read more for a full rundown on the best retinol body products.

Every product is curated with care by our editors and we’ll always give an honest opinion, whether gifted or purchased ourselves. If you buy something through our links, we may earn a small commission at no cost to you.

Purple bottle of Topicals Slather Exfoliating Body Serum

Best Overall: Topicals Slather Exfoliating Body Serum

Topicals is known for their cult favorite hyperpigmentation solution (which I love), so when the ads for their body serum flooded my For You page, I was intrigued. Promising to smooth textured skin and fade discoloration all over the body, this serum sounded like a stronger, retinol-infused version of their hero product. And when I tried it, it didn’t disappoint.

The texture is something between a serum and a lotion. It feels water-based and lightweight but provides a surprising amount of coverage—a little bit goes a long way. After applying the serum, it absorbs into the skin immediately, leaving it hydrated but not sticky. The directions say to apply it 2-3 times a week, so I used it every other day. In just a week, I could feel a difference in how smooth my skin felt to the touch, particularly in places like the backs of my arms. I’ll definitely be keeping this in rotation for my nighttime routine.

 • Active Ingredients: Retinol, Niacinamide, Glycolic Acid, Lactic Acid, Urea
 • Skin Type: All
 • Size: 5 fl oz
 • Cruelty-Free: Yes

Best Overall: Topicals Slather Exfoliating Body Serum

The combination of retinol and AHAs in this serum boosts cell turnover and collagen production by exfoliating dead skin cells and revealing smoother skin. Other actives like urea are proven to deeply hydrate your skin to soothe and prevent irritation.

Topicals Slather Exfoliating Body Serum, $30

Olay Nighttime Body Wash and Conditioner

Best Bath/Shower Treatment: Olay Nighttime Body Wash and Conditioner

This shower duo has sold out multiple times since first going viral. This two-step system is a wash and conditioner for your body. I tried it out for myself and have not been disappointed. The milky wash is a nighttime ritual that caps my day with a small feeling of accomplishment. If I did nothing else that day, I know I’m making progress toward clearer, smoother skin. Each product lathers easily and feels gentle on my skin. In just a few days, I noticed a difference, especially in my KP—the bumpy, clogged pores on the surface of your skin. Just be sure to use sunscreen in the morning after as retinol heightens your sensitivity to the sun.

 • Active Ingredients: Retinol, Vitamin B3 Complex
 • Skin Type: All
 • Size: 18 fl oz & 8 fl oz
 • Cruelty-Free: Yes

Best Bath/Shower Treatment: Olay Nighttime Body Wash and Conditioner

The retinol and Vitamin B3 Complex mix promotes softer, brighter skin. Plus, hydrating ingredients make this treatment gentle enough for everyday use.

Like designer clothes or high-end cars, luxury skincare brands earn their price with quality materials and painstaking attention to detail. But when it comes to investing $100 or more in a product, it needs to be more than just a vanity status symbol. To zero in on the splurgy skincare lines that are truly worth it—and the hero products you actually need from each—I tapped three beauty experts: celebrity aesthetician Candace Marino, board-certified dermatologist Dr. Dendy Engleman, and board-certified dermatologist Dr. Nkem Ugonabo.

“Several factors determine the prices of skincare, but price alone is not indicative of quality or results warranting products. There are thousands of products on the market with hefty price tags and formulas that don’t perform,” Marino explains. “When a brand can prove their products are doing what they claim to do, you’ll see higher price points, and these are the brands I generally trust and want to invest my money in.”

15 Investment-Worthy Luxury Skincare Lines

Which luxury skincare lines are genuinely worth the splurge? Our skincare experts weigh in the best tried-and-true brands, along with the products they do best.

Every product is curated with care by our editors and we’ll always give an honest opinion, whether gifted or purchased ourselves. If you buy something through our links, we may earn a small commission at no cost to you.

Augustinas Bader

Augustinas Bader, a professor of applied stem cell biology and cell technology, essentially bottled up his research to offer some of the most efficacious products on the market today.

Augustinus Bader The Rich Cream

It’s impossible to talk about vanity status symbols without touching on The Rich Cream. But the celebrity favorite is so much more than a beautiful blue bottle thanks to its patented blend of amino acids and synthesized molecules to promote cell turnover.

The Rich Cream, $290

Biologique Recherche

Beloved by estheticians and dermatologists, the entire French skincare line has reached cult status since launching in the late 1970s. Biologique Recherche is known for extremely efficacious products thanks to a high concentration of medical-grade ingredients.

Biologique Recherche Masque Vivant

“I love that it helps minimize the appearance of pores and suits the skin without stripping away the microbiome or harming the skin barrier. I use this once a week and my skin looks and feels amazing afterward.” — Dr. Dendy Engelman

Masque Vivant, $106.84

Charlotte Tilbury

In 2013, the beloved Youtuber and makeup artist launched her eponymous skincare line (and its well-known Magic Cream) in the UK. A decade later, Charlotte Tilbury’s expertise still shows across her beautifully packaged skincare oeuvre.

Charlotte Tilbury Goddess Cleansing Ritual Duo

“Double cleansing is an essential part of my skincare routine, especially when I’m wearing makeup. I use Charlotte Tilbury’s cleansing kit because it has a two-step routine of an oil formulation to melt your makeup followed by a charcoal formulation to purify and further cleanse your skin.” — Dr. Dendy Engelman

Goddess Cleansing Ritual Duo, $46

Elizabeth Arden

The beauty stalwart has retained its allure for over a century. And though its ownership has changed throughout the years, the legacy brand’s reputation—particularly that of its eight-hour cream and retinol capsules—remains sterling.

Elizabeth Arden Retinol Serum Ceramide Capsules

“Another one of my all-time favorite splurge products. I love using retinol as it helps with cell turnover, the production of collagen, hydration, and acne all in one. These capsules are formulated to be highly effective yet extremely gentle on the skin, which is important when using a drying ingredient such as retinol.” — Dr. Dendy Engelman

Retinol Serum Ceramide Capsules, $92

Furtuna Skin

This is one of the only brands in the organic category that I feel is appropriately priced,” Marino explains. “Unlike all the other organic and prestige lines out there, Furtuna is in control of their product from plant to packaging. Every ingredient is grown on a private estate in Sicily, fed by a natural spring. The plants are hand-picked and every part of the plant is used. Furtuna is not taking shortcuts anywhere.”

Furtuna Skin Rinascita Delle Olive Replenishing Balm

“This is a powerful healing, calming, and soothing balm packed with plant extracts that reduce inflammation and promote healing. Great for any dry, chapped, cracked, or impaired skin.” — Candace Marino

Rinascita Delle Olive Replenishing Balm, $225

Glo Skin Beauty

Known for peels and personalization, Glo Skin delivers high-quality products to suit every skin type.

Glo Skin Beauty Bio-Renew EGF Cream

“Bio-Renew EGF Cream is a truly transformative moisturizer that contains vegan epidermal growth factor, phyto-retinols, and bio-recovery peptides to firm the skin, strengthen the barrier, reduce signs of aging, and provide essential hydration. It tested extremely well in clinical trials.” — Dr. Dendy Engelman

Bio-Renew EGF Cream, $175

iS Clinical

“This brand sources the purest and highest quality ingredients and pays for third-party testing of their formulas—many brands conduct their own testing—which means their clinical trials are 100% unbiased,” Marino says. “Their formulas are of such high quality and so safe that they’re all approved for pregnancy, breastfeeding, and they even have a cancer care program with specific protocols and products recommended for patients undergoing chemotherapy.”

IS Clinical Pro-Heal Serum

“This serum was tested in the ORAC study by Brunswick labs, they test for efficacy of products, and in the vitamin C category, pro-Heal provided superior antioxidant protection compared to four other top products in the market. This is truly liquid gold.” — Candace Marino

Pro-Heal Serum, $150.10

Isdin

Though the Barcelona-based brand offers a variety of medical-grade skincare products to address signs of aging, they’re best known for their innovative, mineral SPF products.

ISDIN Eryfotona Ageless Sunscreen

“It provides great protection against both UVA/UVB and Visible light but has an elegant finish that blends in nicely with various skin types.” — Dr. Nkem Ugonabo

Eryfotona Ageless Sunscreen, $66.50

La Mer

As infamous for its mysterious origins as its price tags, La Mer and its proprietary “Miracle Broth” (infused with sustainably-sourced sea kelp) tend to live up to the hype on the first try.

Crème de La Mer Face Cream

Is the famous cream really the secret to happy, dewy skin? The velvety cream and its intoxicating scent certainly make a strong case.

Face Cream, $102

Revision Skincare

Ask a dermatologist for their favorite skincare brands and you’re almost guaranteed to hear Revision Skincare. What the packaging lacks in flash, its products more than make up for with efficacious ingredients.

Revision Skincare Nectifirm Advanced

A mix of peptides and diglucosyl gallic acid smoothes fine lines and leaves skin feeling firmer.

Nectifirm Advanced, $154

RéVive

“This skincare line was founded by Dr. Gregory Brown, a renowned plastic and reconstructive surgeon who spent years working on burn victims and researching how to optimize recovery,” Marino shares. “Their formulas are based on Nobel Prize-winning science that used epidermal growth factors and bio renewal peptides that heal, repair, and build stronger skin integrity. These products make your skin act, feel, and look younger.”

RéVive Sensitif Calming Serum Skin Barrier Repair

“This is a 911 serum for any reactive, sensitized, or impaired skin conditions. It features skin-calming ingredients and RéVive’s bio renewal peptides to soothe the skin while strengthening the barrier. You’ll see visible improvement in dehydration, redness, and dullness. Although I’m not on the sensitive side, I still use this product for its hydrating and soothing properties. It brings calmness to the skin and really supports the overall health and radiance of the skin.” — Candace Marino

Sensitif Calming Serum Skin Barrier Repair, $250

Skinbetter

“Their team of doctors, scientists, and chemists are coming up with some of the most results-warranting formulas and technologies on the market,” Marino says.

Skinbetter AlphaRet Overnight Cream

“This product performs like a prescription tretinoin, but better. Its retinoic acid plus lactic and glycolic works on texture and tone. It’s peptide-based and nourishing, making it non-sensitizing and tolerable. This product outperforms prescription retinoids in several clinical trials and supports the skin as it benefits from the retinoid.” — Candace Marino

AlphaRet Overnight Cream, $135

SkinCeuticals

The science-backed luxury skincare line is another derm and physician go-to. Launched in the early 90s after the brand’s founding scientist Sheldon Pinnell’s research on topical antioxidants led to the first vitamin C patent, the entire SkinCeuticals portfolio remains innovative and excellent.

SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic

Given that the brand essentially launched the vitamin C category in the early 90s, you can expect its antioxidant-packed serum to deliver.

C E Ferulic, $182

U Beauty

When Tina Chen Craig, an OG blogger known to many as “The Bag Snob” channeled her skincare obsession into creating a singular, all-in-one “smart product,” U Beauty was launched and a cult favorite was born.

U Beauty Resurfacing Compound

U Beauty’s all-in-one hero product offers a unique blend of hyaluronic acid, antioxidants, vitamin C, retinol, and AHAs to streamline your routine.

Resurfacing Compound, $228

Prime Renewing Pack, $169.08

Do You Really Know Your Bra Size? An Expert Shares How to Find Your Perfect Match https://camillestyles.com/beauty/breast-size-examples/ Sun, 23 Apr 2023 10:30:00 +0000 https://camillestyles.com/?p=229765

The answers you've been looking for.

The post Do You Really Know Your Bra Size? An Expert Shares How to Find Your Perfect Match appeared first on Camille Styles.

]]>

A fact I’m not proud of: I have no idea what my bra size is. Sure, I could work off the guidance the lingerie in my dresser suggests, but I’d be guessing anywhere in the range of 32A to 34C. Yikes. Personally, I’ve been walking around in my day-to-day simply believing that bras are one of the inevitable discomforts that I, as a woman, am destined to face. Alongside my monthly period that I simply can’t find it within me to be grateful for (sorry, but the cramps and mood swings make me a monster), bras have a way of making me feel that I’m simply not doing my femininity “right.” And while comparing breast size examples may provide others with answers, I become all the more confused. I’m sure I don’t have to tell you, but finding the right bra? It’s a whirlwind, y’all.

Breast Size Examples: An Expert on How to Find the Perfect Bra

So, as with everything I’m unsure of or self-conscious about, I went to an expert for answers. Cami Raymond, Senior Design Director for the women’s intimate brand, Ruby Ribbon, equipped me with jaw-dropping insights that completely shifted how I think about bra sizing.

First off? This should have been more obvious to me, but readers: our breasts change over time—not just through puberty. Our weight fluctuates or we may become pregnant—there are plenty of factors at play! As a result, according to Raymond, we should be doing regular bra fittings every 6-12 months. And guess what? You’re probably holding onto a few bras that should have been thrown out a long time ago.

It’s time to clear things up—for you and for me. Below, Raymond answers all of my questions from how often we should switch out our bras to the perfect styles for tricky situations. (That backless dress you’re planning on wearing to your cousin’s wedding? Don’t worry she has the answers.)

Cami Raymond

Cami Raymond is the Senior Design Director at Ruby Ribbon, a women’s intimates, shapewear, and athleisure company. For over 10 years, she’s been helping the company create products that empower women every day. She currently lives in San Francisco with her family, and when she’s not developing products for Ruby Ribbon, she’s pursing her other passion of horseback riding and show jumping.

So few women actually know their bra size. Where would you recommend they start?

You can certainly start by measuring yourself, but I recommend going to a proper or expert bra fitter to get a more accurate measurement. Also, think about what type of fabric you like, the cups you prefer (demi or full coverage), or if you want it to be convertible as you want something like a bra that you’ll potentially be wearing all day to be as comfortable as possible.

How often should we be sized for bras? Or is it a one-and-done scenario?

Getting sized and fitted should happen every six months to a year. Breast size and shape fluctuate continuously throughout our life. Even our bodies change for many reasons such as pregnancy or weight change. Plus, after a lot of wear your bras also lose their shape, so it’s always best to check on your correct size.

How many bras should we ideally have in our closet?

Ideally, you should have seven. Four for everyday and three for specialty use like working out, date nights, or ones for specific tops and dresses. Ultimately, you want bras that fit your lifestyle, but that still provide the support and lift you need.

When is it time to throw away a bra?

In general, bras last anywhere from 6-9 months. If you’re seeing the fabric get too stretched out, the straps get loose, or the cups lose their shape, those are signs that it’s time to throw the bra out.

Finding the right bra for different events can be tricky, particularly in summer. What are your favorite styles for those tougher outfits?

During the hot months of summer, we recommend Ruby Ribbon’s Original Cami. It has a built-in shelf bra, no underwire, and is made with antimicrobial and moisture-wicking materials. It’s great for under t-shirts that are clinging to you or wear it alone as a tank top. Either way, it smooths and supports you all day.

If you’re dealing with tricky tops or dresses, our Convertible Cami has adjustable straps so it can be made strapless if needed and act as shapewear. If you have any outfits that have a V-neck or a racer-back, our Lace Cami is a great option and also tones the stomach and back areas.

Lastly, if you’re wearing something backless but still need coverage our Posies are reusable adhesive nipple covers for smooth, seamless coverage. They also are made of premium matte silicone that has a smooth & buttery second skin-like finish that does not reflect light through clothes.

I’ve been noticing a lot of comfort-focused designs—wire-free bras that are designed to support without any discomfort. On the other hand, both bras with fun and bright colors and neutral colors will be strong this year so customers can have more to choose from. Fabrics with a sheer mesh texture and lace detailing are also gaining a lot of popularity.

The slicked back ponytail: a step-by-step guide.

The slicked back ponytail—it’s a style we’ve seen on everyone, everywhere for years. However, with the popularity of the Clean Girl Look and our work-from-home desire for easy, high-style options, it’s become our go-to hairstyle. The slicked back ponytail is simple and works for anyone, particularly if you want an instant facelift that accentuates your bone structure. So, if you’ve always wanted to know how to do it, keep reading. We have your step-by-step tutorial right here, courtesy of beauty stylist Hannah Zahner. (And guess what? It’s easier than you think.)

Hannah Zahner

Hannah is a writer and content creator with a background in journalism, graphic design, and marketing. She brings 10 years of experience as a hair and makeup artist and a deep passion for skincare and whole-body health to her writing.

Products Needed to Create a Slicked Back Ponytail

To create the slicked back ponytail of your dreams, you’ll need a few basic supplies (so basic that you might already have them in your medicine cabinet!). See Hannah’s recommendations below for her go-to products that will keep your style in place.

Every product is curated with care by our editors and we’ll always give an honest opinion, whether gifted or purchased ourselves. If you buy something through our links, we may earn a small commission at no cost to you.

PATTERN by Tracee Ellis Ross Double-Sided Bristle Brush

Hannah recommends using a bristle brush and/or a bristle brush teasing comb to achieve a slicked-back style (she uses both!). This double-sided option polishes strands to keep flyaways at bay.

Double-Sided Bristle Brush, $20

Goody Ouchless Elastic Hair Ties

Finding the perfect hair tie could arguably be the most important part of achieving this slicked-back style. These no-metal elastics keep hair protected and free of snags, holding locks securely in place all day.

Ouchless Elastic Hair Ties, $4.39

GIMME Beauty Medium Hair Black Bobby Pins

If flyaways won’t stay slicked back, pop in a few bobby pins for a comfortable, all-day hold.

Medium Hair Black Bobby Pins, $3.97

Moroccanoil Hydrating Styling Cream

Styling cream will help transform hair into this high-style look. As Hannah notes below, the more product you use, the more slicked and styled your look will appear. If you want to go more natural, opt for less product. She also loves the dae Cactus Fruit 3-in-1 Styling Cream as an alternative to Moroccanoil.

Hydrating Styling Cream, $16

Living Proof Style Lab Flex Hairspray

Your style should be slicked-back, not stiff. This hairspray works on any hair type or texture to keep your look soft and smooth.

Style Lab Flex Hairspray, $30

How to Style a Slicked Back Ponytail

1. Start with brushed-out hair. Don’t worry if your hair is a day or two old. Dirty hair works great for this style.

2. Decide on your part. For this look, a middle or side-part works best.

3. Apply your styling cream. Work a small amount of styling cream into your hands before smoothing through the root back toward where the pony will be. Remember: more product means a more slick and styled look. A small amount of product will feel more natural and soft—this can work better for an everyday look. Start with a small bit of product and add more as needed.

4. Smooth and gather hair. Using your bristle brush, begin to smooth and gather hair. You can gather high, low, or midways.

5. Secure your pony. Wrap your elastic around your ponytail to secure your style in place. You can leave the black elastic visible or wrap your pony with a small amount of hair from the underside of your ponytail for a more polished look.

Finish the look. Go back with a bristle teasing brush and a small amount of styling cream product or hairspray to smooth down baby hairs.

Tips for Making the Look Your Own

 • Braid it. Once the ponytail is in place, run a bit of styling cream through the length of your ponytail. Wrap hair into a braid until the end of the pony. Secure with an elastic.
 • Curl the pony. While the root stays slick, it can be fun to add some extra volume to your pony. Once the ponytail is secured and in place, wrap sections of your ponytail around a curling iron. Lightly brush through.
 • Make it ultra-slick. If you want an ultra-slick look and all-day hold, use a heavier-duty styling cream like Ouai Matte Pomade and work into roots as you smooth into your pony. Next, once your hair is gathered and secured, get out your straightener and smooth out your ponytail hair in sections.

 • Twist into a bun. Starting with your secured pony, twist the hair as you wrap it around into a bun. Secure with another elastic and bobby pins.
 • Accessorize the look. Add some fun detail to your slicked back ponytail with stick-on pearl accessories or a pony wrap.

Cuff Ponytail Holder, $7.97

LELET NY Glossy Double Arch Ponytail Hair Tie

Glossy Double Arch Ponytail Hair Tie , $158

Pveath Self-Adhesive Pearl Stickers

Self-Adhesive Pearl Stickers, $8.93

Slicked Back Ponytail: Tips and Tricks

Double up. If you have thicker and heavier hair, instead of wrapping one elastic around all of your hair, use two rubber bands. This allows for extra support and lift to your pony. Keeping the top section clipped out of the way, smooth the lower half into a pony. Gather that pony and the hair you left out on top, and follow the directions above to smooth the top. Wrap the second elastic around all of your hair, securing close to your head.

Apply hairspray strategically. Usually, dirty hair or a little styling cream is enough. However, if you have lots of baby hairs and flyaways, do a quick spritz of hairspray in the problem area. Using your bristle brush or comb, quickly work to smooth the hairs down before the hairspray dries.

Use your natural part. Since this is a more sleek look, it’s usually best to work with whatever part you already have going on. Changing the part with dry hair can cause funky bumps—the last thing you want with a sleek pony. Whether it’s a middle part, slightly off-center, or a side part, this look works with whatever you have going on.

Create extra shine. For extra shine, use a higher-hold styling gel or finish the style with a shine spray like the Kenra Shine Spray

If you’re not sure where to start, we’re showcasing some of our go-to looks plus a few tried and trues to get you through patio season, aka, the most delightful season of them all.

A Breezy Blue Dress

In my opinion, you will hardly find anything better than a one-decision outfit. Dresses and jumpsuits simply free up brain space when you’re making a million decisions a day. And that is exactly how I justify the number of dresses currently hanging in my closet. Camille’s dusty blue dress is a favorite around here because it looks like a top and a skirt but in reality, it’s the easiest dress you’ll ever wear.

Matching Gingham Set + Cowboy Boots

While I’m not normally one to gravitate toward orange tones, the new season has me feeling inspired and ready to step out in something new. I found this Wayf set and the shape was just right for my curvy body—I knew it had to be mine. And these old boots? I’ve had this exact pair for 13 years and I have a feeling they’ll be seeing a lot of wear this year.

brunch outfit ideas: woman wearing wide brimmed hat, white tank, high-waisted beige pants

shop the look: pants | tank top | hat

Linen Top + Wide-Brimmed Hat

Brandy nails the tonal dressing. When in doubt, go monochrome and you will always, always look chic. The hat and flowers don’t hurt, either.

brunch outfit ideas: woman in white eyelet dress by everlane

shop the look: eyelet smock dress | black clogs

Eyelet Dress + Chunky Clogs

Isabelle is proof that pairing unexpected styles keeps things interesting and fun. She paired this perfectly feminine eyelet dress (currently on major sale) with a funky, heavy shoe. It’s like the transition of winter to spring IRL.

brunch outfit ideas: woman wearing white shorts with matching Zara blazer and Reformation sandals

shop the look: shorts (similar) | blazer (similar) | crop top (similar) | strappy mule heels

Short + Blazer Combo with Strappy Sandals

There’s something about brunch that makes neutrals a must. Maybe it’s the pairing with colorful, seasonal food. Or maybe it’s just the fact that a tonal neutral is chic 100% of the time. Michelle’s playful suit with the strappy heels is the perfect combo for a celebratory brunch (and most definitely vacay-approved).

woman wearing grey midi t-shirt dress with baseball cap and sneakers

shop the look: dress | sneakers | bag | sunnies | baseball cap

Casual Midi Dress With Baseball Cap

My favorite type of brunch is indeed a laid-back affair. It’s those sunny mornings when you roll out of bed and throw on a look that you know is going to stick with you all day long. Camille’s t-shirt dress is the most perfect example. Throw on sneakers and a cap and embrace your Sporty Spice era.

shop the look: shirt | pants | sneakers | sunglasses | crossbody bag

Tonal Outfit With White Sneakers and a Colorful Bag

Confession: I saw this whole look on Target (!!) and could not be more obsessed. This is a shirt and pants combo but that shirt could easily double as a denim jacket. The all-blue with a lime green pop?! I will be copying it immediately.

spring brunch outfit idea denim jumpsuit pink mules

shop the look: denim jumpsuit | pink mules | link chain necklace

Dress Up a Jumpsuit With Pink Mules

Listen, a denim jumpsuit is a staple no matter what season you’re in. This one is a bit oversized and so easy to dress up or down. Go full-on spring fling with these fun pink mules and pair it with a classic chain necklace for an easy brunch outfit.

spring brunch outfit idea denim dress cowboy boots

shop the look: denim dress | mid boots

Coastal Cowgirl Denim Dress and Mid-Boots

Everyone is talking about the coastal cowgirl trend and I’m thoroughly convinced that she’s this year’s coastal grandma with a southwestern edge. Boots are a wardrobe must this season (have I convinced you yet?). And again, we’re looking to denim, this time in dress form, for a look that’s classically pulled together. Start with brunch, finish with two-step—not a bad way to spend a Saturday.

casual spring brunch outfit idea denim shorts striped shirt

shop the look: baggy jean shorts | relaxed polo shirt

Casual Baggy Jean Shorts + Polo

This might just be my new weekend uniform. Denim jeans that you can actually move in, plus a nautical polo that’s just begging for a swinging ponytail to bring it all together. Or maybe I’ll swap the polo for a romantic blouse. Either way, pair it with a favorite tote bag for a quick market stop after the mimosas wear off.

shop the look: high-rise jeans | crewneck tee | drop earrings

Classic High-Waist Jeans and a Tee

Here we arrive at the most versatile pieces that you’ll wear again and again (and through every season): a classic white t-shirt that’s easy to layer, the famed Levi’s jeans that make your butt look like a peach, and a pair of Bottega drop earring dupes that, guaranteed, you’re about to see everywhere—if you aren’t already.

woman wearing pink sezane jumpsuit

shop the look: jumpsuit

A Statement-Making Jumpsuit

And finally, every brunch needs a girl in a coral jumpsuit. That girl can be you. Bring some color to the table and the fun along with it. You can’t help but feel happy in something as colorful and well-tailored as this beauty.

Are Eye Whitening Drops Safe to Use? The “Eyeball Doc” Weighs In https://camillestyles.com/beauty/eye-whitening-drops/ Wed, 12 Apr 2023 10:30:00 +0000 https://camillestyles.com/?p=228383

What to know before you try.

The post Are Eye Whitening Drops Safe to Use? The “Eyeball Doc” Weighs In appeared first on Camille Styles.

Don’t tell my esthetician, but I’ll try pretty much anything for my skin. I’m easily intrigued by the products my favorite content creators and trusted beauty editors swear by. So I’ll slather new, shiny serums and exfoliants all over my skin, just because of a viral trend. But when it comes to anything that’s ingestible or internal, I’m way more cautious. From reading the labels at the grocery store to limiting my caffeine intake, I do it all. When it comes to wellness, a healthy dose of skepticism is essential. So when I caught wind of eye whitening drops, I knew I needed to know more. For answers, I spoke with Dr. Inna Lazar, OD, founder of Greenwich Eye Care and Dry Eye Spa—aka, @eyeballdoc on TikTok.

The Skinny on Eye Whitening Drops—A Doctor Answers All Your Questions

Allergy season is upon us, and even if you stock up on allergy medication and hide packs of tissues in every pocket and compartment, one thing always gives you away: those irritated, bloodshot eyes. Eye whitening drops are becoming increasingly popular, but are they safe?

“It’s important to note that eye whitening drops should only be used as directed and for the shortest duration possible,” says Dr. Lazar. “If you have persistent eye redness or discomfort, speaking with an eye care professional to determine the underlying cause and appropriate treatment is important.”

But if used correctly, eye whitening drops can be the simple solution you’ve been looking for. Discovering them feels like a why-haven’t-I-heard-of-this-sooner? moment. Whether you’re trying to alleviate redness from allergies or irritation, read on to discover if this potential quick-fix might be the solution for you.

Are eye whitening drops safe?

While whitening eye drops may effectively brighten the eyes, some carry potential risks such as irritation, rebound redness, and even elevated eye pressure. It’s essential to consult with an eye doctor before using them and to follow instructions carefully to minimize any potential harm.

How do eye whitening drops work?

Eye whitening drops contain a vasoconstrictor (often tetrahydrozoline), which works by constricting the blood vessels on the surface of the eye, reducing the amount of blood flow to the area, and making the whites of the eyes appear brighter.

Potential Side Effects

Some users may experience dryness, irritation, worsening redness, blurred vision, elevated eye pressure, and glaucoma. It’s essential to read the label and use as directed. It’s also a good idea to speak with an eye care professional before use, especially if you have any underlying eye conditions.

Can eye whitening drops be used daily?

Using whitening eye drops daily for an extended period is not recommended. These drops contain vasoconstrictors that narrow the blood vessels in the eyes, which can provide a temporary brightening effect.

Using whitening eye drops daily for an extended period is not recommended.

However, overuse may lead to a rebound effect, causing the blood vessels to dilate and the eyes to appear even redder. It’s important to follow the instructions on the label and only use eye-whitening drops as directed.

Do eye whitening drops work for red eyes caused by allergies?

Eye whitening drops may temporarily relieve red eyes caused by allergies by constricting blood vessels and reducing redness. However, they do not address the underlying cause of the allergic reaction and may not provide long-term relief.

How long does it take for eye whitening drops to work?

This can vary depending on the product and individual. Most eye-whitening drops generally work within a few minutes and the effect can last several hours.

Ingredients to Know

Ingredients can vary depending on the product, but most contain a vasoconstrictor as the active ingredient. Vasoconstrictors work by narrowing the blood vessels in the eyes, which can temporarily reduce redness and create a whitening effect. Some common vasoconstrictors in eye whitening drops include naphazoline, tetrahydrozoline, and phenylephrine.

Natural Alternatives

Several natural alternatives can help to reduce eye redness and improve overall eye health.

 • Cold compress: Applying a cold compress to your eyes can help constrict blood vessels and reduce redness. Soak a clean cloth in cold water, wring out the excess water, and place it over your closed eyes for several minutes.
 • Supplementing with hyaluronic acid preservative-free artificial tears in the morning and right before bedtime will keep the eyes moist and prevent redness of the eyes.
 • Following the 20-20-20 rule when on the screen. Every 20 minutes, look 20 feet away for 20 seconds and blink.
 • Good quality omega-3 is essential in producing good quality natural tears to keep our eyes moist and prevent redness.

Can eye whitening drops be used with contact lenses?

It depends on the specific eye whitening drop and type of contact lens. Some eye whitening drops may contain preservatives or other ingredients irritating the eyes or damaging contact lenses. In general, it’s best to remove contact lenses before using eye drops. Wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting them to allow the drops to be fully absorbed.

If you wear contact lenses and experience persistent eye redness or discomfort, it’s important to speak with your eye doctor to determine the underlying cause and appropriate treatment. Your doctor may recommend a different type of eye drop or treatment that is safe to use with contact lenses.

Know this: it’s difficult to determine the “best” eye whitening drops, as the effectiveness of eye drops can vary depending on the individual and the underlying cause of eye redness.

This is Dr. Lazar’s go-to recommendation to patients. “Lumify eye drops contain the active ingredient brimonidine, which works by selectively constricting the small blood vessels in the eye. This reduces the redness and makes the eyes appear brighter and whiter. It is a type of alpha-2 adrenergic receptor agonist, which means it stimulates certain receptors in the eye to produce the desired effect. Lumify eye drops are specifically formulated to be gentle and safe for use on a daily basis, as recommended by a doctor.”

Gigi Caruso Reflects on Her Hearing Loss Journey—and Founding the Clothing Brand of Her Dreams https://camillestyles.com/beauty/gigi-caruso-morning-routine/ Sat, 08 Apr 2023 10:00:00 +0000 https://camillestyles.com/?p=227403

The proud night owl spills all.

The post Gigi Caruso Reflects on Her Hearing Loss Journey—and Founding the Clothing Brand of Her Dreams appeared first on Camille Styles.

]]>

Nosy as I am, whenever I see someone chasing after and realizing their dreams, my first thought is always: how do they do it? Because of the highlight reel that shapes social media, I’m often dissatisfied with the answer. In our attempt to look perfect for others, we lose all possibility of authenticity and connection. But for Gigi Caruso, CEO, founder, and Creative Director of the luxury swim, activewear and loungewear brand, GIGI C, it’s her vulnerability and willingness to share the challenges she’s faced that’s ultimately led to her success.

At 23, it would be cliché and expected for me to write that Gigi is just getting started. Of course, she is—but the larger truth is that her drive and dream of founding a swimwear brand is rooted in her life-long love of the sea. Having been diagnosed with bilateral moderate to moderately severe sensorineural hearing loss at birth, the ocean has long been where Gigi finds strength and inspiration. Her truth is succinct, but resonant: “I have always felt connected to the water because it was my escape.”

Despite being grateful for the support of her hearing aids out of the water, because they can’t get wet, it’s when Gigi is swimming or simply immersed in the ocean that she feels most peacefully, truthfully, and entirely at home within herself. It’s no wonder this passion for the sea translates seamlessly to beautifully and functionally designed swimwear that allows anyone to feel a similar sense of peace.

Gigi Caruso Shares the Morning Rituals That Set Her up for Success

As Gigi agrees, the most inspiring leaders innovate and find success through their challenges and constraints. When asked what advice she would share with anyone feeling discouraged by a disability, Gigi promotes a refreshing shift in view. While others may assume that your disability sets you back, she knows that’s in fact the magic and the motivation that can propel you forward. Gigi sees her hearing loss not as something that inhibits her, but an experience that amplifies her skills, her passions, and her perspective.

Just out of college, it goes without saying that this past year has been a whirlwind for Gigi. And although she has a clear go-with-the-flow ease about her, Gigi is honest and open as she reflects on what it really looks like to run a successful brand. I loved interviewing and gaining further insights from this powerhouse about the morning rituals that keep her grounded, the self-care routines that set her up for success, and our shared love of the entire Summer Fridays line. Dive into this founder’s world—who knows, you might be inspired to take a morning horseback ride yourself.

(P.S. Gigi is looking for reading reccos—be sure to send them her way!)

Can you share about navigating the challenge of hearing loss and how it inspired your brand, GIGI C?

My hearing loss has never stopped me from achieving my dreams. Although I was not born with the ability to hear like most people, and at times worried about what others may think, it only motivated me to work even harder to show those around me that I was just as able to achieve anything I wanted to as long as I put my heart and soul into it. My hearing loss was the inspiration to start GIGI C. I have always felt connected to the water because it was my escape.

I have always felt connected to the water because it was my escape.

You’ve shared that the water is your safe space. How did you decide to translate this into a swimwear line?

I can’t wear my hearing aids in the water, so the ocean is my escape. I knew there was a gap in the swimwear industry regarding functionality and fashion, so I created my own swimsuits capable of withstanding wakeboarding and water activities or relaxing on the beach. I believe that fashion should never inhibit your functionality. I incorporate these feelings into my designs by designing something I am genuinely so excited to wear in the ocean while being active, but also designs I can’t wait to wear on the beach or dress up for a night out.

You’ve built a community around your experience of hearing loss. What have you learned and how have you grown by connecting deeper with this community?

To me, hearing loss advocacy is vulnerability. I recently started a hearing loss series on my Instagram, where those with or without this disability can come together, connect, and ask questions. This is the beginning of forming a community I’ve always dreamed of growing up. I have learned that I am not alone. Discovering so many other hard of hearing people’s stories has made me realize there is a community out there; I just need to bring it together.

To me, hearing loss advocacy is vulnerability.

Knowing that I am not alone and can make a change in this community has grown my ability to be vulnerable and confident about who I am. I have also been hosting “Sounds of The Grove” events where people can gather at the park at The Grove and meet others who are hard of hearing and may be going through similar struggles. We have many fun activities to partake in and doctors there to help provide everyone with educational hearing information.

What advice would you share with someone who wants to realize a dream, but may be discouraged by a challenge or disability?

Take your biggest challenge and turn it into your biggest motivation. Whenever I feel discouraged or embarrassed, or whatever it may be about my hearing loss, I look at it as my biggest motivation and vow to not let it hold me back. I remember that I am strong, and I want to inspire others not to let their disability hold them back. But I can’t do that without doing it myself.

What has been your biggest learning over the past year?

There have been so many learnings over the past year. I have finally been able to focus on my brand without the stress of college and fully immerse myself in it day-to-day. I am so excited that I have been able to give so much time and attention to GIGI C, and I can’t wait for what’s to come.

In a few words, how would you describe your personal style?

Minimal, neutral, and timeless.

Let’s get into your morning routine. What does a typical day look like for you?

Every day looks different, but most include waking up, enjoying a coffee (or matcha), and heading to the stables to go horseback riding. I love to start the day with my horses. It’s a great way to relax before a busy workday. After riding, I’ll grab some food, get ready for the day, and get to work. I work from home right now, but I am so excited for the new GIGI C office space to open up soon. I can’t wait to be with my team in person every day.

What time is your wake-up call? How much sleep do you usually get?

I try getting 7-8 hours of sleep a night. I’m a night owl, so it’s tough to fall asleep before midnight—I’m my most creative self at night. My days typically start at 7:30 am.

What’s the first thing you do when you wake up?

I grab my dog, Cici, and bring her into bed with me. I’ll think about what my day looks like and what I’m grateful for today, and set at least one goal for the day.

What rituals set you up for success?

Besides starting my day with horseback riding, I love a good morning skincare routine. Cleansers, serums, oils, you name it. I love sharing my favorite beauty and skincare products on my Instagram as well. A current favorite is Summer Fridays—I am in love with all of their products.

Describe your morning beauty routine from start to finish:

GoMacro MacroBar Variety Pack

MacroBar Variety Pack (12 bars), $38.49

Poppi Sparkling Prebiotic Watermelon Soda

Sparkling Prebiotic Watermelon Soda, $29.88

What are your morning rituals?

My morning ritual relies heavily on gratitude and self-care. Gratitude can include anything and everything —there is nothing too little or too big you can be grateful for. My self-care includes moving my body (by working out or horseback riding), taking care of my skin with my favorite products, and drinking lots of water first thing in the morning.

What are your favorite books?

I haven’t read any books recently but I would love suggestions!

What’s always on your nightstand?

I love unwinding and relaxing by lighting a candle at night. I’m currently obsessed with the Jen Meyer candle

What’s your favorite getting-ready soundtrack?

Anything country!

Do you work out in the morning?

I start my mornings with horseback riding or a long walk around my neighborhood and prefer to workout before dinner.

What’s your daily uniform?

We take pride in our fabrics and materials at GIGI C, only using the comfiest most luxurious materials. Nine times out of 10 on an average day, I am in GIGI C! I love to dress up in our lounge for a meeting with an oversized coat or blazer. Some of my go-to lounge pieces at the moment:

GIGI C Kenzie Pullover

Kenzie Pullover, $100

GIGI C Harlow Pant

I also love to dress up in GIGI C Sport for a busy day, and then I can just go straight from work to the gym without changing. Our new Cassie Jumpsuit that launched recently is a novelty and statement piece.

Merit Jumpsuit, $202

GIGI C Cassie Jumpsuit

Cassie Jumpsuit, $215

GIGI C Avery Dress

Avery Dress, $220

If you had one extra hour every morning, how would you use it?

I wish I was better at meditating, so if I had one extra hour, I would work on my goal of meditating more often.

What do you do every day to live a more present and joyful life?

I spend quality time with my family. We are all very close and do family dinners multiple times a week! Another thing I do is unplug from my phone and give myself time to relax my mind.

If you could pin your success down to one thing, what would that be?

My mom’s support has been an enormous part of GIGI C, and it wouldn’t be where it is today without her. Starting this brand with my mom has been the best part of it all.

Sentence Finishers:

I never leave the house without: lip products! I love all things beauty and always have Summer Fridays, Laneige, or Dior gloss on me for touch-ups throughout the day.

If there were more hours in the day, I would: visit my horses or spend more time with friends and family.

Healthiest morning habit: practicing gratitude.

Worst morning habit: hitting snooze a few times.

One thing I want to be known for is: Hearing Loss Advocacy.

The one thing I fear the most: not being able to achieve all of my dreams.

When I feel that fear, I: remind myself of how far I have come and to not be too hard on myself.

One trait you need to succeed in life is: confidence.

Bath or shower? And whats your favorite shower/bath product? Showers but baths are definitely a treat. I love adding Pursoma bath soaks.

We’re in the DIY-era. I’m not talking DIY home decor—though I think we’ve all dabbled in a few projects over the past few years, finished or not—but in beauty and wellness. The industry is angling toward accessibility. Treatments that were once spa-exclusive are popping up at all your favorite beauty retailers. From facial sculpting gadgets to hair removal tools, you can do pretty much anything at home. And with actual results. But it’s not all lasers and microcurrents. Simple, effective beauty treatments are also back in vogue. And today, we have expert insights on the best teeth whitening pen for a bright, healthy smile.

While you might have tried whitening strips or trays, pens are the latest and greatest for portable and flexible whitening. The precision of a pen applicator allows for more even whitening. You can also pop a pen in your travel bag, so it’s a no-stress addition to your nighttime routine. (Unlike my NuFace, which is a nightmare to bring through TSA.)

But are they too good to be true? I tapped Dr. Ambika Amini, a general dentist and co-founder of My Private Dentist, for whitening tips and tricks and to get the scoop on the best teeth whitening pen on the market.

Everything to Know About Teeth Whitening Pens

According to Dr. Amini, there are two main ingredients used in all the best teeth whitening pens: hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide. They both have similar results, but their main difference is how long they take to break down.

While hydrogen peroxide releases most of its whitening power within 30–60 minutes, carbamide peroxide releases about 50% of its whitening power in the first two hours and can remain active for up to six additional hours. Depending on the formula, the balance of these and other ingredients affect the time to result and the shade changes in your teeth.

According to Dr. Amini, another factor to consider is how these ingredients act on sensitive teeth. While both hydrogen peroxide and carbamide peroxide are safe on sensitive teeth, some pens are formulated specifically to protect your oral health.

Below, Dr. Amini shares everything to know about teeth whitening pens, including how they work, insights on results, side effects, and more. Dive in.

How Teeth Whitening Pens Work

Teeth whitening pens contain a solution that is applied with a brush or pen to the surface of your teeth. The solution is usually in liquid or gel form. It contains a bleaching agent such as hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide, which works to break down stains (caused by tea, coffee, red wine, and smoking) on the enamel of your teeth. As the stains are broken down, your teeth will appear brighter and whiter.

Are teeth whitening pens effective?

Teeth whitening pens can work well to remove surface layer extrinsic staining, caused by darkly stained food and drinks and tobacco products. Bear in mind, though, that they do have their limitations.

Firstly, the levels of the bleaching agent used in teeth whitening pens are much lower than the whitening gels in professional teeth whitening. This means that although teeth may appear lighter, teeth whitening pens are unlikely to produce significant shade changes.

Although teeth may appear lighter, teeth whitening pens are unlikely to produce significant shade changes.

How effective teeth whitening pens are, and in fact, all whitening products, will depend on your individual habits. If you drink lots of coffee or tea, the staining is likely to reappear. Drinking darkly colored liquids through a straw and avoiding smoking can help to make whitening results last longer.

Additionally, they won’t whiten crowns, veneers, or fillings, so take this into consideration before using any whitening product.

How long does it take to get results?

This varies from product to product. In general, it is a gradual improvement, and you should expect to apply the whitening pen to your teeth for a few minutes a day (or up to one hour), each day for 1-2 weeks.

You should take a break of at least two weeks before carrying out another cycle of whitening with a teeth-whitening pen. Whitening pens often have 30-40 uses.

Can teeth whitening pens be used on sensitive teeth?

If you experience teeth sensitivity, be cautious when using teeth whitening pens as they may worsen your symptoms and cause discomfort. Some teeth whitening pens are specially formulated with those that have sensitive teeth in mind. They have desensitizing ingredients to help prevent discomfort.

Using toothpaste for sensitive teeth can help with symptoms while using whitening pens. Also, avoid using the pens for longer than directed to avoid teeth sensitivity.

Are there any side effects?

The most common side effect of teeth whitening pens is experiencing teeth sensitivity either during or after treatment. This is more likely if it is applied for longer than suggested. Sensitivity is usually transient but can be quite uncomfortable.

Be mindful when using the teeth whitening pens to keep the gel on the surface of the teeth. If the solution comes into contact with your gums, they can become irritated and sore.

Overuse of teeth whitening pens could cause some erosive wear, and increase the chance of sensitivity.

As an American, traveling to Europe is nothing short of a revelation. While we may marvel at New England buildings and landmarks that date back to the early 1600s, European architecture and history transports us to what feels like another world—and in many respects, it is. One of the ways I anticipated that difference as I planned my 2 week carry on packing list for my trip to Paris and London last month? The fashion.

Having lived in Paris for a year prior, I anticipated many of the sartorial choices that would peg me as an American immediately. Whereas in Chicago I can comfortably—some may even say, stylishly—sport my sweatsuit to my neighborhood coffee shop, loungewear in Europe is reserved for the home.

But having recently entered my *maximalist* era, where color and pattern reign supreme, I was a bit out of practice when it came to dressing as the Europeans do. Thankfully, with time to strategize, I knew exactly what to take and what to leave behind for my two-week trip in a single carry-on.

european trip packing list

Light layers, monochromatic color palettes—and most importantly: prioritizing comfort. Because when you’re in Europe, you’re going to walk. A lot.

Every product is curated with care by our editors and we’ll always give an honest opinion, whether gifted or purchased ourselves. If you buy something through our links, we may earn a small commission at no cost to you.

The Strategy

It had been seven years since I lived in Europe, so there was a lot riding on this return trip. Would I connect with the cities’ busy, winding streets as I once had? Would I be able to navigate the metro system with familiar ease? Had too much time passed for me to expect to feel any of this at all? Of course, with so much anticipation, I wanted what I packed to be a source of comfort, inspiration, and fun.

Because here’s the truth about getting dressed in Europe. While neutrals and darker colors may be the go-to choice, style is also a source of personal expression. There is a uniform, sure—a sea of navy, black, and white—but within this template can be found idiosyncrasies particular to the wearer themselves. An embellished pin on a lapel, a bright scarf tied around a bag, or a pair of glasses that make contacts irrelevant.

When it comes down to it, if you own who you are and your style reflects that, you’ll fit right in. Why sweatpants don’t work in Europe? Because there isn’t intention behind the choice.

Packing Parameters

In addition to exploring my own style and tailoring it to a European landscape, I had a few parameters that dictated my packing:

 • I would be traveling between London and Paris for almost two weeks: March 13-26.
 • There was rain in the forecast and temperatures were predicted to fall in the high 40s/low 50s.
 • The majority of my trip would be spent visiting museums, shopping, eating out, and of course, walking a ton.

With these constraints in mind, these were my top three priorities when planning my 2 week carry on packing list:

 • Prioritize light layers that pack well. I opted for many silk tank tops, skirts, and dresses that could be layered underneath sweaters in the daytime and worn with a wrap at dinner.
 • Pack shoes that could be worn in multiple contexts. I brought a pair of Chelsea-style boots, sneakers, and comfy clogs that were all easy to walk in.
 • Minimize bulky items. I packed a light puffer that could be squashed down in my suitcase, two sweaters, and a cashmere wrap that doubled as a scarf.

The Suitcase that Changed My Life

I’m someone who prefers to travel light. Not only do I not have to worry about additional luggage charges, but it makes going from plane to train to in-city transit easier. And while the suitcase has been lauded from just about every corner of the internet, I’m here to confirm: my Away suitcase has changed the way I travel. I purchased mine two years ago and it’s been everywhere with me.

What’s great:

 • One side features an interior compression system. This is typically where I pack my bulkier items—jackets, shoes, etc. You can clip it down and tighten the straps to fit way more than you thought possible.
 • For longer trips, I always fill mine to the brim. But no matter how much I pack, the suitcase always feels lightweight due to its even distribution of weight.
 • When you’re running through the airport to catch a connecting flight, you’ll love the 360° wheels that never (ever!) get jammed. Trust me: when I had 10 minutes to make it across the Reykjavík airport, this was clutch.

What’s not:

 • While the suitcase can fit in the overhead bin of most airlines, you may have to check it on smaller or full flights.

Away The Bigger Carry-On

u003cpu003eEvery traveler could benefit from an Away suitcase. The Bigger Carry-On is perfect for trips lasting a few days to two weeks. It’s stylish, sleek, and makes for efficient packing. Travel tip: Because these suitcases are becoming more and more popular, tie a bright scarf around your handle so you can easily identify it.u003c/pu003e

My 2 Week Carry On Packing List

My 2 Week Carry-On Packing List

Without further ado, I’m sharing the 11 essentials that made packing a carry-on for two weeks in Europe easy and streamlined. Trust me, this is all you need for the ultimate European spring vacay.

A Roomy Tote (Maximize Your Personal Item!)

Let’s kick things off with a bang. No matter how much you prepare in advance, the unexpected can always occur. For me, that came in the form of boarding a super-packed flight from Chicago to London and having to check my bag. And then… proceeding to have that bag lost for three days. Thankfully, I could steal from my stylish best friend’s closet. But this is your sign to maximize your personal item. I’ve carried a trusty Everlane canvas tote for years that can fit my laptop, a book, toiletries, and an additional outfit/pajamas so that I can feel a little prepped should the worst occur.

Travel tip: Though I say maximize, you want to be sure you won’t end up hurting yourself lugging your bag around on one shoulder. Keep your extra outfit lightweight and pack only the necessary toiletries: a toothbrush, hairbrush, cleanser, moisturizer, and SPF. If you want to add a little makeup to the mix, keep it streamlined with this glowy set and mascara.

Madewell The Zip-Top Transport Tote

u003cpu003eThe largest size of Madewell’s Transport Tote collection, this bag can haul your laptop, book, wallet, a pouch—plus, it has an interior pocket to keep your keys, phone, and passport safe.u003c/pu003e

The Zip-Top Transport Tote, $198

light puffer, 2 week carry on packing list

A Light Puffer

On multiple occasions as I was packing, I asked myself: why didn’t I book my trip for late spring/early summer? That way, I could avoid the need to pack heavier layers like a coat. Well, with these tickets booked for months, there was no turning back—and I knew I needed something to keep me warm on London and Paris’ inevitable windy and blustery days. Enter: a lightweight puffer that packs down to a fraction of its size. It kept me cozy without feeling like I was prepping for the tundra.

Travel tip: Whether I’m in Europe or the States, I always opt for black or navy outerwear. That way, no matter the outfit, my topper will always pair perfectly.

alo Gold Rush Puffer

u003cpu003eMy exact puffer is no longer available on Banana Republic (though you can snag it u003ca href=u0022https://poshmark.com/listing/Womens-Banana-Republic-Funnel-Neck-Puffer-Coat-Black-NWT-Sz-S-622793df7f80d2c062d57711u0022 target=u0022_blanku0022 rel=u0022noreferrer noopeneru0022u003eon Poshmarku003c/au003e!). But who doesn’t love a dupe—especially when it features zippered pockets (key in Europe), a cinched waist to make layering easy, and u003c/pu003e

Gold Rush Puffer, $198

A Versatile Silk Skirt

Washable silk is having a moment and I couldn’t be happier. Not only do silk pieces look and feel totally luxe, but they take up minimal space in your suitcase. Trust me, it’s my go-to fabric for transitional wear as it takes you seamlessly from winter to spring. This was the skirt that I packed in my personal item, and I couldn’t have been more grateful for the forethought.

Travel tip: Pair with a silk cami, a simple white tea, or an oversized button-down. Outfit, made.

Quince Washable Silk Skirt

u003cpu003eWhile some silk skirts can set you back hundreds, Quince’s take is affordable and just as stylish. Throw it in the wash with your delicates and hang it to dry. Easy-peasy.u003c/pu003e

Washable Silk Skirt, $59.90

Abercrombie Satin Mini Skort

u003cpu003eI also brought along this mini skort that was perfect for nights out. And while I wore it with tights due to the temps, I can’t wait to confidently embrace the cozy skort in all its glory come summer.u003c/pu003e

Satin Mini Skort, $45 (reg. $60)

reusable bags, 2 week carry on packing list

A Comfy, Flattering Pant

A disclaimer: I am not a hard-pants girl. You can catch me wearing jeans maybe 10 days out of the year, and even then, they’re oversized mom jeans. Point is, when it comes to pants, comfort is key—but that doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice style or fit. I scored these pants (with an elastic waist!) for $70 five years ago from a vintage store in Portland. And if we’ve hung out at least twice, it’s likely you’ve seen me wearing them. No matter what cut is in style, I find that a cropped, wide-leg pant is universally flattering.

Travel tip: Because I’m petite, I like to pair these pants with a small heel so they don’t overwhelm my frame. Whether you go for clogs, sandals, or boots, adding height is key.

Everlane The Organic Wide-Leg Pant

u003cpu003eWhen I’m not buying vintage, Everlane is my go-to for pants. The shape gives you a booty (the copy describes the cut as u0022butt-boostingu0022), slims you through the waist, and… they’re beyond comfortable.u003c/pu003e

The Organic Wide-Leg Pant, $74 (reg. $98)

Reusable Bags (That Even Parisians Like)

No matter what shifting trends convince us to wear, BAGGU bags will forever stay in style. At home, I love using these to carry my groceries and I always keep at least one in my purse in case something cute catches my eye. While I was traveling, I stored one of these bags in my fanny pack to carry purchases and any layers I needed to take off. And I kid you not, my bag received no less than ten compliments from Parisians. That’s when it clicked for me: even if the French often gravitate toward darker colors in the city, the love and passion for color is undeniably present. For proof, take a look at Merci’s, the famed department store, visiting exhibit.

Travel tip: If you’re checking a bag, store one or two of these in your carry-on or personal item. That way, if your bag is over the weight limit, you have extra room to pull a few things out.

BAGGU Standard Baggu

u003cpu003eAs lightweight as these are, you wouldn’t expect them to be so durable. But I’ve stuffed mine to the brim on many an occasion and they’ve lived to tell the tale. While my fruit version is no longer in stock, this lemon print is definitely on my wish list.u003c/pu003e

Standard Baggu Lemon Tree, $14

cashmere wrap, 2 week carry on packing list

A Does-It-All Cashmere Wrap

As a Christmas present a few years back, my mom gifted me this cashmere wrap that I’ve hardly taken off since. While it’s less of a style in America, many European women drape their scarves and shawls around their bodies for an added layer. On many an occasion, my Parisian travel companion and I had to run to make our dinner reservations. Without time to change, I simply pulled off my jacket and wrapped myself in cashmere. Easy and oh-so-elegant.

Travel tip: Use your wrap as a blanket to keep you warm on the plane.

Garnet Hill Cashmere Wrap

u003cpu003eWhile the price is steep, I’ve had my wrap for years. It’s perfect for truly any occasion—even if you need an extra layer while you’re working from home.u003c/pu003e

Cashmere Wrap, $198

Day-to-Night Dresses, 2 week carry on packing list

Day-to-Night Dresses

I wear dresses year-round. In the winter, you can catch me with a made-for-spring frock layered over tights and beneath my coziest sweaters. The look feels feminine and stylish, while also being undeniably comfortable. It’s just one of the many ways I like to romanticize my work-from-home life. Similar to my silk skirts, these dresses packed down to nothing (so I didn’t have to make the hard decision as to which of my faves would get left behind). Of course, when you plan ahead with layers, you can take this look from day to night with seamless ease.

Travel tip: Pair with tights, a sweater, and dress-down boots for the perfect daytime ‘fit.

Banana Republic Valley Midi Slip Dress

u003cpu003eWorn in the picture above, this is my new favorite dress. The cowl-neck cut highlights your shoulders and I Iove the subtly sexy slit. I have plans to wear this for every wedding I’m attending this summer. It’s truly the dress that does it all. u003c/pu003e

Valley Midi Slip Dress, $54.97 (reg. $110)

Third Form Crush Bias Cowl Mini Slip

u003cpu003eI have this dress in Aegean and am u003cemu003eobsessedu003c/emu003e. Sadly, that colorway is no longer in stock but there are still plenty of warm-weather hues to choose from. The bias neckline is universally flattering and I love the sheen the crushed finish gives off.u003c/pu003e

Crush Bias Cowl Mini Slip, $220

Everlane The Satin Square-Neck Slip Dress

u003cpu003ePictured below, my pink Everlane satin dress is thrifted and sadly no longer available. But I love the ease of this pick, with its minimalist elegance and A-line shape. It’s truly a one-and-done piece.u003c/pu003e

The Satin Square-Neck Slip Dress, $128

A Structured Blazer

A well-fitting blazer is as timeless as it gets. When you want something a little more elegant than a loose-fitting sweater, a black blazer is a simple layer that’s both functional and stylish. The goal here is to go slightly oversized. That way, should you need to add a layer beneath, you’re all set.

Travel tip: This will easily become one of the key pieces in your wardrobe, so you want something that’s soft but structured. And though the price tag may be on the steeper side, if we’re talking cost-per-wear, it’s absolutely worth it.

Madewell The Relaxed Blazer in Softdrape

The Relaxed Blazer in Softdrape, $185

Silk Tanks

Let me count the ways I love this cami. Well, for insight, the skirt pictured above was my friend’s and this is me rounding out day two of this trip’s suitcase-less beginning. But with my black cami at the ready, I could pair it with just about anything in her closet. Whether it’s pants or a skirt, silk tanks and camis are a universally elegant choice.

Travel tip: As with everything on this list, we’re going for comfort. Your cami should rival your softest, most well-loved tee. If it’s at all less cozy, it doesn’t belong in your suitcase. (Or closet, for that matter.)

A New Day™ Cami

u003cpu003eEven though it’s Target, I’m going on three years with this cami and it’s still holding up. My partner makes fun of me for wearing it multiple times throughout the week (u0022Isabelle, did you wash that?u0022 Yes… ), but when you find something this versatile, you make the most of it. Perhaps it’s time I buy a few more.u003c/pu003e

Cami, $18

Comfortable and Cute Shoes

By far, my shoes were what took up the most space in my suitcase. But as someone who likes to have options, I prioritized giving them as much real estate as possible. Because I’ve experienced beyond-painful blisters in the past, I wanted my footwear to seamlessly blend style and function. In addition to nondescript sneakers (black, of course), I also went for elevated clogs that gave me some height and my well-loved boots (that are far more comfortable than they may look). With these options, I could go everywhere from museums to shopping to a six-course meal. Consider your bases covered.

Travel tip: The boots were more of a seasonal pick, so keep them if you’re traveling in the winter or early spring. If not, swap them out for chic slides (I love these).

Jeffrey Campbell Clogge Clogs

u003cpu003eThe clogs to end all clogs. Made of rubber, these do the oversized shoe trend perfectly while also being a comfy choice (I walked u003cemu003emilesu003c/emu003e in these). Plus, they come in 8 colors—I’m after the pink next.u003c/pu003e

Clogge Clogs, $60

Barbour® Maisie Boots

u003cpu003eWe all need a durable boot that can be worn with just about anything. Lined in leather and featuring a chunky block heel, these boots are designed to take you anywhere in style and comfort.u003c/pu003e

Maisie Boots, $149 (reg. $200)

A Hands-Free Bag

I initially purchased this bag in the summer of 2020, when I only had walks and hikes to entertain me. It was perfect for carrying my wallet, phone, a pair of sunglasses, and another Standard Baggu just in case. Since then, it’s become my everyday bag thanks to the ease of wear and the simple fact that I hate having anything in my hands when I’m out and about (save for a Berthillon ice cream cone, of course). Bonus: While you’ll have to turn your backpack around and wear it on the front of your body if you bring it into a museum, this bag already has you covered.

Travel tip: I learned the hard way that whatever you do, in London DO NOT refer to this as a fanny pack. “Bag” or “satchel” works perfectly fine. For insights, read Merriam-Webster’s take.

BAGGU Fanny Pack

u003cpu003eFurther proof that BAGGU designs timeless, universal pieces that fit every function. To date, I’ve convinced multiple friends to pick up their own pack. It’s easy to clean, and with an adjustable strap, this bag works with whatever you wear.u003c/pu003e

Fanny Pack, $52

As you dive deeper into the world of wellness, you become more attuned to what your body needs. Are you drinking enough water? Do you get enough sleep? And at this point, I notice all the shifts in how I look and feel when my routine changes. So, when winter’s dreary weather inevitably came, I didn’t blink an eye at my dry skin. Simple solution—I just changed my moisturizer. But if your skin starts to look duller and feel less bouncy, that’s something different: dehydration. Here’s something that might blow your mind, there’s a difference between dry vs dehydrated skin. And because they are different conditions, dry and dehydrated skin need different solutions.

Understanding Dry vs Dehydrated Skin

Dry skin can be either a condition or a skin type. Some people have oily skin, some people have dry skin. People with oiler skin can suffer from dryness, too. But those with a dry skin type should tailor their skincare routine to address dryness year round.

Dehydrated skin, on the other hand, is not a skin type. It’s a sign that your skin is not getting enough water and is thirsty for hydration. It can be fixed, you just have to know what you’re looking for.

“When it comes to maintaining healthy skin, keeping our skin hydrated is essential,” says Rina Allawh, MD, a board-certified dermatologist based in Philadelphia. “Hydration is not only important for tackling dry skin, but also dehydrated skin. Believe it or not, there is a difference between dry skin and dehydrated skin!”

After getting advice from Allawh to clarify the ins and outs of dry vs dehydrated skin, I also consulted Lesley Thornton, founder of KLUR, to understand how to repair a damaged skin barrier that’s causing dehydrated skin. If any of this sounds like you, read on to discover the difference between dry vs dehydrated skin and tips for how to address each.

applying serum, dry vs dehydrated skin

The Difference Between Dry and Dehydrated Skin

“Dry skin happens when there is a lack of oil or lipid (fat) in the top layer of your skin,” says Allawh. “On the other hand, in dehydrated skin, there is a lack of water, not oil, in the top layer of the skin, also known as the stratum corneum.”

What causes dehydrated skin?

Dehydrated skin lacks water, affecting its overall appearance. This can be caused by a lot of things, including overall dehydration or, often, a damaged skin barrier.

“When the natural lipids are stripped away from the outer layer of skin, the ‘glue’ holding the barrier together becomes fragile and breaks down,” says Thornton. “Cracks form and become an entry point for pathogens and external aggressors which trigger inflammation.”

“Many factors can compromise our skin barrier, stripping away or changing the lipid and moisture content of the skin. This includes environmental aggressors such as pollution and UV exposure, stress, hormones, and skincare routines.”

How to Know if Skin Is Dry or Dehydrated

Sometimes, it can be difficult to determine what’s going on with your skin just by looking at it. Do I have dry skin? Do I have dehydrated skin? Could I have both? (Unfortunately yes, you might.) A common method to determine if you have dehydrated skin is by giving yourself a little pinch.

Pinch a tiny corner of your skin—gently! It can be your cheek, your belly, your arm, or the back of your hand. Hold for a few seconds, then let go. Because dehydrated skin loses elasticity, if your skin is thirsty, it will take longer than normal to snap back into place.

According to Allawh, other physical manifestations of dehydrated skin include:

 • Skin Complexion. Those with dehydrated skin may in fact have an oily appearance, but have a dull skin complexion because of the lack of water.
 • Skin lines. Unlike those with dry skin, those with dehydrated skin may have more prominent skin lines and may even show signs of premature skin aging (i.e., fine lines, wrinkles, and furrows).
 • Itch. Unlike dry skin, dehydrated skin typically does not itch. Dry skin may even cause the skin to feel tight or even slightly irritated with application of over-the-counter topical creams and lotions. Dry skin may also cause skin flaking whereas dehydrated skin causes a diminished skin complexion.

What’s the difference between adding moisture and increasing hydration?

Turns out, hydration and moisturization are not the same things either. Luckily, some products perform double duty. But make sure you’re getting both hydrating and moisturizing ingredients into your routine to tackle dryness and dehydration.

“Hydration is key to maintaining a protective skin barrier and preventing (and treating) both dry and dehydrated skin, says Allawh. “Niacinamide, ceramides (lipids that restore the protective skin barrier), hyaluronic acid, vitamin E, and glycerin, among other ingredients, further promote hydration and are also critical for restoring damaged, dry skin.”

To find the right moisturizer for everyday use, she recommends “moisturizing twice daily with an ointment or cream, even if the skin does not appear dry or dull. Moisturizer should be applied within five minutes of cleansing.”

When it comes to my nails, I usually play it safe. Like any pre-teen with a penchant for Nirvana and thick black eyeliner, when I first started wearing nail polish, I only wore black. I rocked the patron manicure of angsty teens for years, baring my chipped and bitten nails with pride. Eventually, I grew out of it, but I had forgotten how fun expressing myself through nails could be. That is, of course, until I took the plunge and switched out my tried-and-true tones to experiment with the best spring nail colors 2023 has to offer.

I’ll admit, for a few years I didn’t paint my nails at all. Instead, I chose to focus on repairing my nail health after years of biting them down (ouch). But recently, nail art has come back into favor. After all, there’s nothing like the power of a good manicure—and this trend is a great reminder of exactly that. Bold nail looks abound and they’re inspiring me to try something new. There’s no time like the present to be adventurous with your nails.

What nail trends do you predict being big this spring?

According to Rose, people are itching for any opportunity to express themselves. The season’s bright, bold nail trends reflect that. She notes that, after years staying indoors and without opportunity to put self-expression on display, “people are really wanting to see and be seen after what feels like an eternity of isolation. This makes me think that people will really be serving looks as the weather heats up, nails included! Think fun bright colors like green, long lengths, and lots of expressive nail art. My clients have been loving the tiny 3D gummy bears I make on their nails—totally sweet for spring.”

How to Select the Best Nail Color for You

If you’ve ever experienced that fresh-from-the-salon feeling with a new shade on your nails, then it goes without saying: color can change how you feel. “When choosing a nail color, I generally consider how it makes me feel when I look at it, but also how I’d like to feel,” says Rose.

Pick something aspirational. Whether you need a little confidence or a warm-weather mood booster, a fresh-color mani has you covered. Rose’s take is that in some areas, “it’s still QUITE cold. A lot of clients have been doing bright, neon, and dopamine-inducing colors to boost their moods ’til the weather warms up. It’s a great time to express your individuality through your nail colors if you dare!”

What are your spring nail colors recommendations?

Go big or go home, says Rose. “I love a green nail for spring! There’s a specific neon, pastel green that seems to be turning up all over my Instagram feed. OPI’s ‘The Pass is Always Greener’ is super pretty even as a French nail! I’m also obsessed with Megan Fox and her matching green mani-pedi. So cute! Gucci’s ‘Melinda’ would be so perfect!”

The post Not On Board With Buccal Fat Removal? Aestheticians Say—Try These At-Home Facial Sculpting Tools Instead appeared first on Camille Styles.

]]>

By now, you’ve likely heard of buccal fat removal. And if you’re a fellow self-proclaimed beauty lover with a penchant for falling into Internet rabbit holes — you know too much about buccal fat at this point. In layman’s terms: buccal fat is the specific pocket of your cheek between your cheekbones and jaw that essentially dictates the shape of your face. You know it best as the spot you contour with your favorite shade stick. Or the part you suck in when you purse your lips for a photo (as a millennial, I am cursed to forever automatically pose in “duck face” whenever a camera glances my direction). Though it wasn’t on my beauty bingo card, somehow this pocket of cheek fat has captured the attention of the beauty zeitgeist and everyone has been talking about it this year. Namely, what to do with it. To keep or not to keep, that is the question. When contouring is not enough, the buzzy new cosmetic surgery of buccal fat removal has come to offer a more permanent solution. If you’re seduced by the siren call of a snatched, sculpted face, but wary of going under the knife, facial sculpting tools can give non-invasive, at-home results — without getting rid of your buccal fat.

Facial tools have been on the market for a long time. You probably have a face roller or a gua sha in your fridge as we speak. They’ve also been part of beauty rituals for centuries and featured heavily in ancient, Eastern medicine. Suffice it to say, they’re more than just an ephemeral beauty trend. But as beauty standards shift towards more sculpted-looking features, people are looking for at-home solutions to contour their skin without layers and layers of makeup. That’s where facial sculpting tools come in.

The industry has come a long way since jade rollers first became mainstream. Now, facial sculpting tools are versatile and high-tech, using a variety of techniques to get you spa-like results at home. Some tools use suction to lift and contour your face, while others use vibration or heat to break down fat cells and promote lymphatic drainage. There are also tools that combine microcurrents, LED lights, and heat for a multi-pronged approach.

Facial sculpting tools offer a way to transform your face over time, and more naturally than cosmetic procedures. They also provide anti-aging benefits to defy the effects of gravity by pulling your skin upwards and smoothing fine lines and less elastic skin on the cheeks, chin, jawline, and neck.

But as thorough as my research rabbit holes get, I thought I’d get an expert opinion. To explain all things buccal fat, lymphatic drainage, and facial sculpting to me — in the simplest terms possible — I consulted Elina Wang, CEO & Co-Founder of ESW Beauty; and Amy Falcon, medical aesthetician at Miami Plastic Surgery.

TLDR: yes, you can get a super-snatched, sculpted face at home. It just takes a lot of time. And ruthlessly disciplined consistency. Time to get habit-stacking, everyone! Read on to discover the ins and outs of facial sculpting tools and how they can transform your face.

How do facial sculpting tools actually work?

Falcon: Facial sculpting tools like gua sha, jade rollers, and facial massage devices can definitely help to contour your face and give you a more sculpted appearance. They work by applying pressure to your facial muscles, which helps to relieve tension and promote circulation. This can help to reduce puffiness and define your facial structure.

Wang: Yes they do work, but it takes time. My favorite sculpting tool is the Gua Sha, a multifunctional tool that can sculpt, relieve tension, firm and smooth the skin, and boost circulation. It will not be a product where you can achieve a fully chiseled face overnight, but if you use it consistently, you will begin to see results in two weeks.

Can you achieve a more sculpted face at home?

Wang: Clinical procedures always provide a more permanent and instant result that at-home tools cannot replicate as quickly. But if you use at-home tools consistently, you can achieve similar results over time. Oftentimes even if you do go through a facial sculpting procedure, it is recommended to use at-home tools to maintain the appearance.

Falcon: It’s definitely possible to achieve a more sculpted appearance at home using facial sculpting tools and techniques! However, it’s important to keep in mind that buccal fat removal is a more invasive procedure that can’t be replicated with at-home treatments. Some facial sculpting tools that can help you achieve a more sculpted appearance include gua sha, jade rollers, facial massage devices, and facial cupping sets.

While facial sculpting tools can help to maintain a more sculpted appearance over time, they’re not designed to produce permanent results. Think of them more as a way to enhance your natural features and keep your skin looking its best.

Any caution for using facial sculpting tools?

Falcon: Overuse or improper use of these tools can lead to skin irritation, bruising, or other adverse effects. It’s also important to keep the tools clean and sanitized to prevent the spread of bacteria. If you’re not sure how to use a particular facial sculpting tool, it’s always a good idea to consult with a licensed esthetician or skincare professional.

What are the best facial sculpting tools?

Falcon: Both electro current and lymphatic drainage practices can be effective in promoting a more sculpted facial appearance. Electrocurrent treatments use low-level electrical currents to stimulate your facial muscles, which can help to tone and tighten your skin. Lymphatic drainage practices, on the other hand, involve gentle massage techniques that can reduce puffiness and promote a more defined facial structure.

Wang: Using a mix of both an electric current device, such as the NuFace device, which is a favorite of mine, or a self-lymphatic drainage massage, which can be achieved with a Gua Sha, are the best pair. Once in a while, going to an in-person lymphatic drainage massage can be effective if you have an important event to attend and want quick results, but in general, for overall improvement, being consistent at home is the way to go.

Best manual facial sculpting tools

Wang: Using a Gua Sha will provide long-lasting results, but similar to being consistent with exercising and eating healthy, using a Gua Sha often, I recommend daily, and having it become a routine in your lifestyle is how you will achieve the sculpted look for your face.

Best microcurrent facial sculpting tools

Falcon: One of the non-invasive options I recommend is the microcurrent facial. It uses a low-level electrical current to stimulate the facial muscles, promoting muscle tone and firmness. This treatment can help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, lift and firm sagging skin, and enhance skin radiance. It’s a gentle and relaxing treatment that requires no downtime, and the results can last up to several days.

Another non-invasive option that I recommend is radiofrequency skin tightening. This treatment uses radiofrequency energy to heat the deeper layers of skin, promoting collagen production and skin tightening. It can help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, lift and firm sagging skin, and enhance skin texture. It’s a comfortable and safe treatment that requires no downtime, and the results can last up to several months.

To replicate these treatments at home, try:

NuFACE Trinity Starter Kit

Arguably the most famous microcurrent tool on the market — and for good reason. Known as the “five-minute facelift,” the gentle microcurrents and unique shape hug your face and leave you instantly lifted with cumulative results over time.

An upcoming star in the microcurrent market, this small but mighty wand is a 4-in-1 tool. It packs microcurrent technology, red light therapy, therapeutic warmth, and massage technology to rejuvenate and sculpt your skin.
