A beach bag essential.

I live in Los Angeles, so naturally most of my conversations begin with some quip about the weather. So far this year, where it’s rained more in LA than in Seattle, everyone in the city has been floundering. For months, plans were canceled, raincoats were purchased, and umbrellas were excavated out from the depth of our storage containers. We may have kept up with our SPF face routine, but the best sunscreen for our body wasn’t on anyone’s radar.

However, now that we’re finally getting some sun, we’re making the most of it. Going to the beach is like a sport in Los Angeles. Everyone has their favorite spot, and most of us have a beach bag packed and ready to go on any occasion. As a beauty editor, it won’t surprise anyone that mine contains a mini pouch filled with beach-ready skin and body care. Here’s what’s inside:

How to Find the Best Sunscreen for Your Body

When it comes to your face, you can pick between a thousand different formulas made for different skin tones and skin types. But when it comes to your body, most sunscreens seem to be sticky, streaky goops that smell like chemicals. No, thanks.

In my time around the block—or the beach, as it were—I’ve tried many body sunscreens. Some have made their way into my beach bag, others have never seen the light of day. And while I usually evaluate my body products based on touch and texture, I consulted a dermatologist to discover what I should really be looking for in the best sunscreen for body.

Dr. Caroline Robinson is a board-certified medical and cosmetic dermatologist, with subspecialty expertise in alopecia, preventative skincare, and ethnic skin dermatology. She is also the founder of Tone Dermatology.

“There are considerable differences in the products available now with many great options,” says Dr. Rogers. “I always tell my patients finding the right sunscreen is like finding the right pair of jeans; you have to try out a few, and it can take a while, but once you find the one you like, you will love it and want to wear it every day.”

My Criteria for Determining the Best Sunscreens

After our conversation, I established these criteria for the best body sunscreens:

 • Key Ingredients: What’s in it?
 • Type of protection: Is it a physical/mineral or chemical sunscreen?
 • SPF: What level of protection does it offer?
 • Size: How much do you get? And (important!) can you pack it in your carry-on?
 • Water Resistance: How long does it stay effective in the water?

Ready to dive into the best sunscreens? Read on to discover the products that offer the best protection —and that don’t feel icky while shielding your skin.

What are the most important factors to consider when selecting a sunscreen for the body?

I always recommend choosing sunscreen formulas that are non-comedogenic and free from fragrances, dyes, parabens, oil, or certain chemicals like oxybenzone. For daily use, use sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. On days when you are out in the sun for long periods of time, apply an SPF 50 or above.

What are the differences between chemical and physical sunscreens for the body?

To further explain, mineral sunscreen contains active ingredients like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide that sit on top of the skin’s surface to deflect and scatter harmful UV rays. Chemical sunscreens contain UVB- and UVA-absorbing chemicals that convert UV rays into heat through a chemical reaction, which then releases the heat.

What ingredients should we look for in sunscreens for the body?

Most drugstore sunscreens contain a combination of chemicals that provide reasonable UVA and UVB protection. While using these products is definitely better than not using anything, here’s the rub: these are chemicals our bodies absorb. Fortunately, they are well-studied and labeled by the FDA as non-toxic. And, despite the reports, they do not cause cancer and have not been shown to cause hormone disruption in humans.

Zinc provides the most comprehensive protection against Ultraviolet B (UVB) rays that cause sunburns and Ultraviolet A (UVA) rays that cause brown spots and wrinkles. It has a reputation for being thick and white, making people look ghost-like, but an increasing number of sunscreens with zinc are becoming more cosmetically elegant. And unlike the chemical sunscreen ingredients discussed above, zinc is a naturally occurring mineral, not absorbed by your body. Even the nano-sized particles are safe, as confirmed by recent studies. Titanium dioxide is another good physical sunscreen, but it only protects from UVB rays, so products need to have zinc even if they have titanium dioxide.

Are there any sunscreens for the body that are safe for sensitive skin?

If you have sensitive skin, I suggest opting for a mineral sunscreen as chemical sunscreens can sometimes irritate and exacerbate existing conditions. Oil-free sunscreens will be best for those with acne-prone skin. If you are going to be sweating or coming into contact with water, I recommend using a water-resistant sunscreen for longer-lasting protection.

How often should you apply sunscreen to your body, and how much should you use?

Mineral sunscreens immediately protect your skin upon contact, but chemical sunscreen should be applied at least half an hour before going out into the sun since it requires some time to absorb.

It’s best to reapply every hour to hour and a half if you are participating in activities that cause sunscreen to wear off like swimming or anything that prompts sweating. If just sitting in the sun without excessive sweating (not dermatologist recommended!), a good rule of thumb is to reapply every two hours.

What SPF level is best for body sunscreen?

Studies have shown that higher levels of SPF offer more protection than lower SPF, so you should use SPF 50 or above. The minimum SPF recommended by the American Academy of Dermatology is SPF 30.

The Best Sunscreen for the Body

You never know what you like until you’ve tried it. And I’ve tried a lot of different options—including some of the most viral sunscreens out there right now. But are they worth the hype? Sunscreen isn’t the most glamorous product on the market, so when people rave about one, I’ve generally found that it lives up to my expectations. Here are some of my favorites that I’ve tried, tested, and endlessly researched.

Every product is curated with care by our editors and we’ll always give an honest opinion, whether gifted or purchased ourselves. If you buy something through our links, we may earn a small commission at no cost to you.

Best Overall: Bask Suncare SPF 30 Lotion & Continuous Spray

The wear and tear on the packaging says it all: this duo is a staple in my beach bag. From the lotion’s creamy texture to the spray’s refreshing mist, this is a set that makes me excited to apply my daily sunscreen. Perfect for application and reapplication, it’s proof that the best sunscreen is the sunscreen you’ll actually wear.

Whenever I apply it around a group of friends, they perk up at the light coconut and vanilla scent. Invariably, they ask what sunscreen is that? and I respond by spraying the group with a cloud of my staple sunscreen. No gatekeeping here. It’s the brand I recommend to everyone.

 • Key Ingredients: Avobenzone, Homosalate, Octisalate, Octocrylene, Aloe, Cocoa Butter
 • Type of Protection: Chemical

 • Size: 5.5 fl oz and 4 fl oz

Best Sunscreen Oil: Supergoop! Glow Oil

Summer is the season for glowy skin. I love slathering on silky body oil after the shower, deeply nourishing my skin while giving it an iridescent look. Sometimes, it feels disheartening to apply sunscreen and dull the effects of my body oil. No more! The Supergoop! Glow Oil glides on smooth and dries fast for a shine and shield that last all day. I wear this when I’m laying out by the pool or beach. While the formula is lightweight and soaks into the skin fast, the oil does transfer to clothes if you don’t let it dry for long enough. You’ve been warned.

 • Key Ingredients: Avobenzone, Homosalate, Octisalate, Octocrylene, Shea Butter, Coconut Oil
 • Type of Protection: Chemical
 • SPF: 50
 • Size: 5 fl oz
 • Water-Resistance: 80 minutes

Supergoop! Glow Oil

With a mix of chemical protectants and natural plant and seed oils, this sunscreen is both protective and nourishing. The spray bottle makes it easy to reapply for more shine and protection throughout the day.

Best Dry Oil Sunscreen: Cay Skin Isle Body Oil SPF 30

Founded by supermodel Winne Harlow, Cay Skin has burst onto the body care scene with a bang. And though it’s new to my arsenal, I already know it’ll be here for a long time. It’s a sumptuous blend of SPF with sea moss and squalane—buzzy body ingredients that I love in all my products. This body oil is no exception. Unlike the Supergoop! oil, this one does not transfer onto clothes and has more of a hydrating effect. This is my pick to wear every day since it absorbs into the skin so easily. It’s also not water-resistant, so I use my other sunscreens for more heavy-duty occasions like exercise or beach days.

 • Key Ingredients: Avobenzone, Homosalate, Octisalate, Octocrylene, Sea Moss, Squalane
 • Type of Protection: Chemical
 • SPF: 30
 • Size: 3.7 fl oz
 • Water-Resistance: None

Cay Skin Isle Body Oil

Skin-nourishing ingredients like sea moss, squalane, and other hydrating oils come together in this ultra-light body oil with a transfer-free texture and SPF 30 protection.

$32

Best Texture: Vacation Classic Whip

If you want a sunscreen that you’re excited to incorporate into your morning routine, look no further. With its whipped cream-inspired packaging, it’s a whimsical way to start your morning. You won’t forget it, that’s for sure. And I’ve tried this one myself (as well as other sunscreens from the brand) so I can assure you: it’s not just a gimmick. Yes, it went viral on TikTok, but the actual sunscreen is a creamy, easy-to-apply texture. None of the stickiness you associate with the sweet treat that it’s inspired by. My only warning: keep this one on your shelf and out of your day bag. The spray nozzle is a little volatile—something I learned the hard way when it exploded in my bag. Definitely keep in a cool, dry place.

 • Key Ingredients: Homosalate, Octocrylene, Octisalate, Avobenzone, Coconut Oil, Aloe Vera, Vitamin E
 • Type of Protection: Chemical
 • SPF: 30
 • Size: 4 fl oz
 • Water-Resistance: 80 minutes

Vacation Classic Whip

Banana extract and coconut oil give this mousse its signature smell while aloe and its signature oil blend make it lightweight but moisturizing.

$22

Best Face and Body Sunscreen: Biossance Squalane + Zinc Sheer Mineral Sunscreen

Mineral sunscreens can be touch and go. No matter how long you rub them in, many of them leave an irritating white cast that feels sticky on your skin and ruins your beach photos. The first time I tried this sheer mineral sunscreen, I was immediately converted. In seconds, it disappears into your skin with no white cast—even on my dark skin. Thanks to Biossance’s signature squalane base, the formula is lightweight enough for the face and durable enough for the body. Due to its small packaging, I like using it on my face, and bringing it down to my décolletage and chest since those areas see the most sun.

 • Key Ingredients: Zinc Oxide, Squalane
 • Type of Protection: Physical
 • SPF: 30
 • Size: 1.7 fl oz
 • Water-Resistance: None

Biossance Squalane + Zinc Sheer Mineral Sunscreen

Zinc, a physical sun protectant, creates a barrier between your skin and the sun while squalane supports skin health in this sheer, invisible sunscreen.

$34

Best Gel: Kopari Sun Sheild Body Glow Gel

Somewhere between a lotion and an oil is a gel. If you’re seeking something iridescent, this Kopari gel shimmers when it catches the light to create a glowy effect while protecting your skin. It acts as a serum, sun protectant, and glow oil without any tackiness and residue buildup. It absorbs fast to prevent transfer and oiliness, making it sweat-free and perfect for oilier skin.

 • Key Ingredients: Avobenzone, Homosalate, Octisalate, Octocrylene
 • Type of Protection: Chemical
 • SPF: 50
 • Size: 5.1 fl oz
 • Water-Resistance: 40 minutes

Kopari Sun Sheild Body Glow Gel

Hydrate and glow with this shimmering sunscreen that absorbs fast and leaves behind an iridescent shine without any stickiness. Avocado and coconut oil also provide intense moisture.

$39

Dermatologist Favorite: EltaMD UV Pure Broad-Spectrum SPF 47

I’m an Elta MD fan because, like many lovers of the brand, I had it recommended by a derm. But most people—myself included, until recently—grossly underappreciate its potential as a body sunscreen. Formulated for the face and body, it’s gentle and fuss-free. For sensitive skin, eczema, or easily irritated skin, this is a great pick.

 • Key Ingredients: Zinc Oxide, Titanium Dioxide, Vitamin C
 • Type of Protection: Physical
 • SPF: 47
 • Size: 4 fl oz
 • Water-Resistance: 80 minutes

EltaMD UV Pure Broad-Spectrum SPF 47

This dermatologist’s favorite for the face and body is a lightweight mineral sunscreen fortified with two different types of physical sun protectants, zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. Plus, vitamin C helps prevent signs of aging and protects from environmental damage.

$32

Best for Sensitive Skin: CeraVe Hydrating Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50 Body Lotion

You can’t go wrong with CeraVe. For anyone with sensitive skin, or just seeking a simple but effective sun solution, CeraVe’s mineral sunscreen physically shields your skin while deeply hydrating your skin barrier. Its ceramide-rich formula makes it a powerful moisturizer, while hyaluronic acid hydrates for all-day softness. Experience no irritation as this formula creates a protective barrier around your skin to reflect UVA and UVB rays.

 • Key Ingredients: Zinc Oxide, Titanium Dioxide, Hyaluronic Acid, Ceramides
 • Type of Protection: Physical
 • SPF: 50
 • Size: 5 fl oz
 • Water-Resistance: None

CeraVe Hydrating Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50 Body Lotion

Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide create a physical shield for your skin while skin-favorites hyaluronic acid and ceramides nourish and fortify your body’s skin barrier, making it a perfect solution for sensitive skin.

$18

Best Drugstore Sunscreen: Sun Bum Original SPF 50 Sunscreen Lotion

Approved by The Skin Cancer Foundation, this sunscreen is by beach bums, for beach bums. If you spend a lot of time in this sun, this creamy coverage offers hydration and protection. Vitamin E, a potent antioxidant, helps prevent premature aging and damage from environmental stressors. All this comes in one affordable package, lining the shelves at your local drugstore, waiting for you to make it a summer staple.

 • Key Ingredients: Avobenzone, Homosalate, Octisalate, Octocrylene, Vitamin E
 • Type of Protection: Chemical
 • SPF: 50
 • Size: 6 fl oz
 • Water-Resistance: 80 minutes

Sun Bum Original SPF 50 Sunscreen Lotion

Simple but effective, this sunscreen offers moisturizing sun care with antioxidant-rich vitamin E. Slather it on liberally for all-day SPF 50 sun protection.

$18

Best Body Sunscreen for Darker Skin Tones: Black Girl Sunscreen for Face and Body

The white cast on many body sunscreens is especially problematic for anyone with more melanated skin. For people with darker skin tones, physical sunscreens have historically been out of the question. We either have to deal with a super obvious white film or forgo sunscreen. (Perhaps this is what perpetuated the myth that melanin-rich skin doesn’t even need sunscreen.) But don’t believe it! Darker skin does need sun protection. And finally, brands like Black Girl Sunscreen are creating quality, hydrating products for the face and body that shield your skin without leaving any white residue behind.

 • Key Ingredients: Avobenzone, Homosalate, Octisalate, Octocrylene, Carrot Juice, Sun Flower Oil, Cacao
 • Type of Protection: Chemical
 • SPF: 30
 • Size: 3 fl oz
 • Water-Resistance: 80 minutes

Black Girl Sunscreen for Face and Body

This moisturizing sunscreen contains rich skincare ingredients like avocado, jojoba, and cacao to deeply nourish your skin and promote healing, softness, and even complexion. Meanwhile, carrot juice contains vitamin C to even breakouts and boost melanin, while sunflower oil calms inflammation from sunburn and irritation.

Should I Be Using Retinol On My Body? A Dermatologist Weights In https://camillestyles.com/beauty/best-retinol-body-products/ Tue, 25 Apr 2023 10:30:00 +0000 https://camillestyles.com/?p=229448

Hello, summer skin.

The post Should I Be Using Retinol On My Body? A Dermatologist Weights In appeared first on Camille Styles.

Retinol is somehow both one of the most popular and misunderstood skincare ingredients. While skincare experts and beauty lovers sing its praises, beginners might be wary of such a potent ingredient. Is retinol safe? How do you incorporate it into your skincare routine? And what about the dreaded “purge?” Believe me, I’ve been there. When it comes to what you put on your face, it pays to be cautious. But once you experience the transformative powers of retinol, you’ll never go back. You’ll probably want to use it everywhere. So it’s no surprise that retinol is popping up in all the buzziest body care bottles.

One of my favorite skincare hacks is using potent ingredients on my body as well as my face. From swiping glycolic acid across my underarms to using hyaluronic acid on my hands, I love to show my body a little extra love. Plus, our bodies can handle more active ingredients at higher concentrations. In fact, the skin on your body often needs more strong products to see a difference. That’s where retinol comes in.

The Best Retinol Body Products: What to Know

Using retinol is the closest thing you’ll get to bathing in the fountain of youth. It supercharges cell turnover to speed up collagen production, keeps your skin firm, and smooths fine lines and pigmentation. All these things happen to your body, as well as your face, which is why it seems like all the cutting-edge brands are releasing retinol body products.

To discover how to use the best retinol body products, I spoke to Dr. Michelle Henry, a board-certified dermatologist at Skin & Aesthetics Surgery of Manhattan. She took me through the ins and outs of how to use retinol for the body and what to look for in the best retinol body products.

She provides exceptional care for her patients at Skin & Aesthetic Surgery of Manhattan in the Midtown East neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City. The Benefits of Retinol Body Products

Retinol, a type of vitamin A, provides several benefits to the body, including improved skin health, bone growth and development, and maintaining eye health. It has been shown to stimulate collagen production, which can enhance the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and skin texture. Additionally, it can reduce acne, unclog pores, and improve uneven skin tone. Retinol has also been used to treat skin conditions such as psoriasis, eczema, and hyperpigmentation.

Side Effects

Potential side effects of retinol include skin irritation, redness, peeling, and sensitivity to sunlight. To avoid these side effects, it is recommended to start with a low concentration of retinol and gradually increase the dosage.

How to Apply Retinol Body Products

Regarding the frequency and application of retinol body products, it is best to follow the manufacturer’s instructions. It is generally recommended to use retinol products at night since they can increase the skin’s sensitivity to sunlight.

The Difference Between Retinol Body Creams and Body Lotions

It is important to note that retinol body creams and body lotions have different consistencies. Creams are thicker and more hydrating, while lotions are more suitable for people with oily skin. The choice between a cream or lotion ultimately depends on personal preference and skin type.

The Best Retinol Body Products for Sensitive Skin

For individuals with sensitive skin, it is recommended to use a lower concentration of retinol and start with a patch test before using it on a larger area. It is also important to avoid using retinol with other potentially irritating skincare ingredients, such as alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) and beta-hydroxy acids (BHAs). The Naturium retinol body lotion as well as Olay Retinol body lotions are great options.

Who should avoid retinol body treatments?

People with skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, or rosacea should be careful with using retinol body products since it may exacerbate these conditions. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should also avoid using retinol products due to their potentially harmful effects on the developing fetus. Consulting a dermatologist before using retinol body products is always advisable.

The Best Retinol Body Products, Tested and Reviewed

With a doctor’s recommendation in tow, I tried some of the most popular retinol body washes and viral retinol body lotions for myself. I looked for products that paired their retinol formulas with other skin-renewing active ingredients. I also investigated which skin type each product was formulated for and whether or not it was a cruelty-free formula.

My own trials and additional research gave me a 360 view of the exciting, emerging world of retinol body treatments—from body washes to serums and scrubs. And it also gave me smoother, clearer skin in just a few washes. So believe the hype, and read more for a full rundown on the best retinol body products.

Purple bottle of Topicals Slather Exfoliating Body Serum

Best Overall: Topicals Slather Exfoliating Body Serum

Topicals is known for their cult favorite hyperpigmentation solution (which I love), so when the ads for their body serum flooded my For You page, I was intrigued. Promising to smooth textured skin and fade discoloration all over the body, this serum sounded like a stronger, retinol-infused version of their hero product. And when I tried it, it didn’t disappoint.

The texture is something between a serum and a lotion. It feels water-based and lightweight but provides a surprising amount of coverage—a little bit goes a long way. After applying the serum, it absorbs into the skin immediately, leaving it hydrated but not sticky. The directions say to apply it 2-3 times a week, so I used it every other day. In just a week, I could feel a difference in how smooth my skin felt to the touch, particularly in places like the backs of my arms. I’ll definitely be keeping this in rotation for my nighttime routine.

 • Active Ingredients: Retinol, Niacinamide, Glycolic Acid, Lactic Acid, Urea
 • Skin Type: All
 • Size: 5 fl oz
 • Cruelty-Free: Yes

Best Overall: Topicals Slather Exfoliating Body Serum

The combination of retinol and AHAs in this serum boosts cell turnover and collagen production by exfoliating dead skin cells and revealing smoother skin. Other actives like urea are proven to deeply hydrate your skin to soothe and prevent irritation.

Olay Nighttime Body Wash and Conditioner

Best Bath/Shower Treatment: Olay Nighttime Body Wash and Conditioner

This shower duo has sold out multiple times since first going viral. This two-step system is a wash and conditioner for your body. I tried it out for myself and have not been disappointed. The milky wash is a nighttime ritual that caps my day with a small feeling of accomplishment. If I did nothing else that day, I know I’m making progress toward clearer, smoother skin. Each product lathers easily and feels gentle on my skin. In just a few days, I noticed a difference, especially in my KP—the bumpy, clogged pores on the surface of your skin. Just be sure to use sunscreen in the morning after as retinol heightens your sensitivity to the sun.

 • Active Ingredients: Retinol, Vitamin B3 Complex
 • Skin Type: All
 • Size: 18 fl oz & 8 fl oz
 • Cruelty-Free: Yes

Best Bath/Shower Treatment: Olay Nighttime Body Wash and Conditioner

Like designer clothes or high-end cars, luxury skincare brands earn their price with quality materials and painstaking attention to detail. But when it comes to investing $100 or more in a product, it needs to be more than just a vanity status symbol. To zero in on the splurgy skincare lines that are truly worth it—and the hero products you actually need from each—I tapped three beauty experts: celebrity aesthetician Candace Marino, board-certified dermatologist Dr. Dendy Engleman, and board-certified dermatologist Dr. Nkem Ugonabo.

“Several factors determine the prices of skincare, but price alone is not indicative of quality or results warranting products. There are thousands of products on the market with hefty price tags and formulas that don’t perform,” Marino explains. “When a brand can prove their products are doing what they claim to do, you’ll see higher price points, and these are the brands I generally trust and want to invest my money in.”

15 Investment-Worthy Luxury Skincare Lines

Which luxury skincare lines are genuinely worth the splurge? Our skincare experts weigh in the best tried-and-true brands, along with the products they do best.

Every product is curated with care by our editors and we’ll always give an honest opinion, whether gifted or purchased ourselves. If you buy something through our links, we may earn a small commission at no cost to you.

Augustinas Bader

Augustinas Bader, a professor of applied stem cell biology and cell technology, essentially bottled up his research to offer some of the most efficacious products on the market today.

Augustinus Bader The Rich Cream

It’s impossible to talk about vanity status symbols without touching on The Rich Cream. But the celebrity favorite is so much more than a beautiful blue bottle thanks to its patented blend of amino acids and synthesized molecules to promote cell turnover.

The Rich Cream, $290

Biologique Recherche

Beloved by estheticians and dermatologists, the entire French skincare line has reached cult status since launching in the late 1970s. Biologique Recherche is known for extremely efficacious products thanks to a high concentration of medical-grade ingredients.

Masque Vivant, $106.84

Charlotte Tilbury

In 2013, the beloved Youtuber and makeup artist launched her eponymous skincare line (and its well-known Magic Cream) in the UK. A decade later, Charlotte Tilbury’s expertise still shows across her beautifully packaged skincare oeuvre.

Charlotte Tilbury Goddess Cleansing Ritual Duo

“Another one of my all-time favorite splurge products. I love using retinol as it helps with cell turnover, the production of collagen, hydration, and acne all in one. These capsules are formulated to be highly effective yet extremely gentle on the skin, which is important when using a drying ingredient such as retinol.” — Dr. Dendy Engelman

Retinol Serum Ceramide Capsules, $92

Furtuna Skin

This is one of the only brands in the organic category that I feel is appropriately priced,” Marino explains. “Unlike all the other organic and prestige lines out there, Furtuna is in control of their product from plant to packaging. Every ingredient is grown on a private estate in Sicily, fed by a natural spring. The plants are hand-picked and every part of the plant is used. Furtuna is not taking shortcuts anywhere.”

Furtuna Skin Rinascita Delle Olive Replenishing Balm

“This is a powerful healing, calming, and soothing balm packed with plant extracts that reduce inflammation and promote healing. Great for any dry, chapped, cracked, or impaired skin.” — Candace Marino

iS Clinical

“This brand sources the purest and highest quality ingredients and pays for third-party testing of their formulas—many brands conduct their own testing—which means their clinical trials are 100% unbiased,” Marino says. “Their formulas are of such high quality and so safe that they’re all approved for pregnancy, breastfeeding, and they even have a cancer care program with specific protocols and products recommended for patients undergoing chemotherapy.”

IS Clinical Pro-Heal Serum

“This serum was tested in the ORAC study by Brunswick labs, they test for efficacy of products, and in the vitamin C category, pro-Heal provided superior antioxidant protection compared to four other top products in the market. This is truly liquid gold.” — Candace Marino

Pro-Heal Serum, $150.10

Though the Barcelona-based brand offers a variety of medical-grade skincare products to address signs of aging, they’re best known for their innovative, mineral SPF products.

Eryfotona Ageless Sunscreen, $66.50

La Mer

As infamous for its mysterious origins as its price tags, La Mer and its proprietary “Miracle Broth” (infused with sustainably-sourced sea kelp) tend to live up to the hype on the first try.

Crème de La Mer Face Cream

Is the famous cream really the secret to happy, dewy skin? The velvety cream and its intoxicating scent certainly make a strong case.

Face Cream, $102

Revision Skincare

Ask a dermatologist for their favorite skincare brands and you’re almost guaranteed to hear Revision Skincare. What the packaging lacks in flash, its products more than make up for with efficacious ingredients.

These products make your skin act, feel, and look younger.”

RéVive Sensitif Calming Serum Skin Barrier Repair

“This is a 911 serum for any reactive, sensitized, or impaired skin conditions. It features skin-calming ingredients and RéVive’s bio renewal peptides to soothe the skin while strengthening the barrier. You’ll see visible improvement in dehydration, redness, and dullness. Although I’m not on the sensitive side, I still use this product for its hydrating and soothing properties. It brings calmness to the skin and really supports the overall health and radiance of the skin.” — Candace Marino

Sensitif Calming Serum Skin Barrier Repair, $250

Skinbetter

“Their team of doctors, scientists, and chemists are coming up with some of the most results-warranting formulas and technologies on the market,” Marino says.

Skinbetter AlphaRet Overnight Cream

“This product performs like a prescription tretinoin, but better. Its retinoic acid plus lactic and glycolic works on texture and tone. It’s peptide-based and nourishing, making it non-sensitizing and tolerable. This product outperforms prescription retinoids in several clinical trials and supports the skin as it benefits from the retinoid.” — Candace Marino

Don’t tell my esthetician, but I’ll try pretty much anything for my skin. I’m easily intrigued by the products my favorite content creators and trusted beauty editors swear by. So I’ll slather new, shiny serums and exfoliants all over my skin, just because of a viral trend. But when it comes to anything that’s ingestible or internal, I’m way more cautious. From reading the labels at the grocery store to limiting my caffeine intake, I do it all. When it comes to wellness, a healthy dose of skepticism is essential. So when I caught wind of eye whitening drops, I knew I needed to know more. For answers, I spoke with Dr. Inna Lazar, OD, founder of Greenwich Eye Care and Dry Eye Spa—aka, @eyeballdoc on TikTok.

The Skinny on Eye Whitening Drops—A Doctor Answers All Your Questions

Allergy season is upon us, and even if you stock up on allergy medication and hide packs of tissues in every pocket and compartment, one thing always gives you away: those irritated, bloodshot eyes. Eye whitening drops are becoming increasingly popular, but are they safe?

“It’s important to note that eye whitening drops should only be used as directed and for the shortest duration possible,” says Dr. Lazar. “If you have persistent eye redness or discomfort, speaking with an eye care professional to determine the underlying cause and appropriate treatment is important.”

But if used correctly, eye whitening drops can be the simple solution you’ve been looking for. Discovering them feels like a why-haven’t-I-heard-of-this-sooner? moment. Whether you’re trying to alleviate redness from allergies or irritation, read on to discover if this potential quick-fix might be the solution for you.

Are eye whitening drops safe?

While whitening eye drops may effectively brighten the eyes, some carry potential risks such as irritation, rebound redness, and even elevated eye pressure. It’s essential to consult with an eye doctor before using them and to follow instructions carefully to minimize any potential harm.

How do eye whitening drops work?

Eye whitening drops contain a vasoconstrictor (often tetrahydrozoline), which works by constricting the blood vessels on the surface of the eye, reducing the amount of blood flow to the area, and making the whites of the eyes appear brighter.

Potential Side Effects

Some users may experience dryness, irritation, worsening redness, blurred vision, elevated eye pressure, and glaucoma. It’s essential to read the label and use as directed. It’s also a good idea to speak with an eye care professional before use, especially if you have any underlying eye conditions.

Can eye whitening drops be used daily?

Using whitening eye drops daily for an extended period is not recommended. These drops contain vasoconstrictors that narrow the blood vessels in the eyes, which can provide a temporary brightening effect.

Using whitening eye drops daily for an extended period is not recommended.

However, overuse may lead to a rebound effect, causing the blood vessels to dilate and the eyes to appear even redder. It’s important to follow the instructions on the label and only use eye-whitening drops as directed.

Do eye whitening drops work for red eyes caused by allergies?

Eye whitening drops may temporarily relieve red eyes caused by allergies by constricting blood vessels and reducing redness. However, they do not address the underlying cause of the allergic reaction and may not provide long-term relief.

How long does it take for eye whitening drops to work?

This can vary depending on the product and individual. Most eye-whitening drops generally work within a few minutes and the effect can last several hours.

Ingredients to Know

Ingredients can vary depending on the product, but most contain a vasoconstrictor as the active ingredient. Vasoconstrictors work by narrowing the blood vessels in the eyes, which can temporarily reduce redness and create a whitening effect. Some common vasoconstrictors in eye whitening drops include naphazoline, tetrahydrozoline, and phenylephrine.

Natural Alternatives

Several natural alternatives can help to reduce eye redness and improve overall eye health.

 • Cold compress: Applying a cold compress to your eyes can help constrict blood vessels and reduce redness. Soak a clean cloth in cold water, wring out the excess water, and place it over your closed eyes for several minutes.
 • Supplementing with hyaluronic acid preservative-free artificial tears in the morning and right before bedtime will keep the eyes moist and prevent redness of the eyes.
 • Following the 20-20-20 rule when on the screen. Every 20 minutes, look 20 feet away for 20 seconds and blink.
 • Good quality omega-3 is essential in producing good quality natural tears to keep our eyes moist and prevent redness.

Can eye whitening drops be used with contact lenses?

It depends on the specific eye whitening drop and type of contact lens. Some eye whitening drops may contain preservatives or other ingredients irritating the eyes or damaging contact lenses. In general, it’s best to remove contact lenses before using eye drops. Wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting them to allow the drops to be fully absorbed.

If you wear contact lenses and experience persistent eye redness or discomfort, it’s important to speak with your eye doctor to determine the underlying cause and appropriate treatment. Your doctor may recommend a different type of eye drop or treatment that is safe to use with contact lenses.

This is Dr. Lazar’s go-to recommendation to patients. “Lumify eye drops contain the active ingredient brimonidine, which works by selectively constricting the small blood vessels in the eye. This reduces the redness and makes the eyes appear brighter and whiter. It is a type of alpha-2 adrenergic receptor agonist, which means it stimulates certain receptors in the eye to produce the desired effect. Lumify eye drops are specifically formulated to be gentle and safe for use on a daily basis, as recommended by a doctor.”

Kiss the strips goodbye.

We’re in the DIY-era. I’m not talking DIY home decor—though I think we’ve all dabbled in a few projects over the past few years, finished or not—but in beauty and wellness. The industry is angling toward accessibility. Treatments that were once spa-exclusive are popping up at all your favorite beauty retailers. From facial sculpting gadgets to hair removal tools, you can do pretty much anything at home. And with actual results. But it’s not all lasers and microcurrents. Simple, effective beauty treatments are also back in vogue. And today, we have expert insights on the best teeth whitening pen for a bright, healthy smile.

While you might have tried whitening strips or trays, pens are the latest and greatest for portable and flexible whitening. The precision of a pen applicator allows for more even whitening. You can also pop a pen in your travel bag, so it’s a no-stress addition to your nighttime routine. (Unlike my NuFace, which is a nightmare to bring through TSA.)

But are they too good to be true? I tapped Dr. Ambika Amini, a general dentist and co-founder of My Private Dentist, for whitening tips and tricks and to get the scoop on the best teeth whitening pen on the market.

Everything to Know About Teeth Whitening Pens

According to Dr. Amini, there are two main ingredients used in all the best teeth whitening pens: hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide. They both have similar results, but their main difference is how long they take to break down.

While hydrogen peroxide releases most of its whitening power within 30–60 minutes, carbamide peroxide releases about 50% of its whitening power in the first two hours and can remain active for up to six additional hours. Depending on the formula, the balance of these and other ingredients affect the time to result and the shade changes in your teeth.

According to Dr. Amini, another factor to consider is how these ingredients act on sensitive teeth. While both hydrogen peroxide and carbamide peroxide are safe on sensitive teeth, some pens are formulated specifically to protect your oral health.

Below, Dr. Amini shares everything to know about teeth whitening pens, including how they work, insights on results, side effects, and more. Dive in.

How Teeth Whitening Pens Work

Teeth whitening pens contain a solution that is applied with a brush or pen to the surface of your teeth. The solution is usually in liquid or gel form. It contains a bleaching agent such as hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide, which works to break down stains (caused by tea, coffee, red wine, and smoking) on the enamel of your teeth. As the stains are broken down, your teeth will appear brighter and whiter.

Are teeth whitening pens effective?

Teeth whitening pens can work well to remove surface layer extrinsic staining, caused by darkly stained food and drinks and tobacco products. Bear in mind, though, that they do have their limitations.

Firstly, the levels of the bleaching agent used in teeth whitening pens are much lower than the whitening gels in professional teeth whitening. This means that although teeth may appear lighter, teeth whitening pens are unlikely to produce significant shade changes.

Although teeth may appear lighter, teeth whitening pens are unlikely to produce significant shade changes.

How effective teeth whitening pens are, and in fact, all whitening products, will depend on your individual habits. If you drink lots of coffee or tea, the staining is likely to reappear. Drinking darkly colored liquids through a straw and avoiding smoking can help to make whitening results last longer.

Additionally, they won’t whiten crowns, veneers, or fillings, so take this into consideration before using any whitening product.

How long does it take to get results?

This varies from product to product. In general, it is a gradual improvement, and you should expect to apply the whitening pen to your teeth for a few minutes a day (or up to one hour), each day for 1-2 weeks.

You should take a break of at least two weeks before carrying out another cycle of whitening with a teeth-whitening pen. Whitening pens often have 30-40 uses.

Can teeth whitening pens be used on sensitive teeth?

If you experience teeth sensitivity, be cautious when using teeth whitening pens as they may worsen your symptoms and cause discomfort. Some teeth whitening pens are specially formulated with those that have sensitive teeth in mind. They have desensitizing ingredients to help prevent discomfort.

Using toothpaste for sensitive teeth can help with symptoms while using whitening pens. Also, avoid using the pens for longer than directed to avoid teeth sensitivity.

Are there any side effects?

The most common side effect of teeth whitening pens is experiencing teeth sensitivity either during or after treatment. This is more likely if it is applied for longer than suggested. Sensitivity is usually transient but can be quite uncomfortable.

Be mindful when using the teeth whitening pens to keep the gel on the surface of the teeth. If the solution comes into contact with your gums, they can become irritated and sore.

Overuse of teeth whitening pens could cause some erosive wear, and increase the chance of sensitivity.

Understanding Dry vs Dehydrated Skin

Dry skin can be either a condition or a skin type. Some people have oily skin, some people have dry skin. People with oiler skin can suffer from dryness, too. But those with a dry skin type should tailor their skincare routine to address dryness year round.

Dehydrated skin, on the other hand, is not a skin type. It’s a sign that your skin is not getting enough water and is thirsty for hydration. It can be fixed, you just have to know what you’re looking for.

“When it comes to maintaining healthy skin, keeping our skin hydrated is essential,” says Rina Allawh, MD, a board-certified dermatologist based in Philadelphia. “Hydration is not only important for tackling dry skin, but also dehydrated skin. Believe it or not, there is a difference between dry skin and dehydrated skin!”

After getting advice from Allawh to clarify the ins and outs of dry vs dehydrated skin, I also consulted Lesley Thornton, founder of KLUR, to understand how to repair a damaged skin barrier that’s causing dehydrated skin. If any of this sounds like you, read on to discover the difference between dry vs dehydrated skin and tips for how to address each.

The Difference Between Dry and Dehydrated Skin

“Dry skin happens when there is a lack of oil or lipid (fat) in the top layer of your skin,” says Allawh. “On the other hand, in dehydrated skin, there is a lack of water, not oil, in the top layer of the skin, also known as the stratum corneum.”

What causes dehydrated skin?

Dehydrated skin lacks water, affecting its overall appearance. This can be caused by a lot of things, including overall dehydration or, often, a damaged skin barrier.

“When the natural lipids are stripped away from the outer layer of skin, the ‘glue’ holding the barrier together becomes fragile and breaks down,” says Thornton. “Cracks form and become an entry point for pathogens and external aggressors which trigger inflammation.”

“Many factors can compromise our skin barrier, stripping away or changing the lipid and moisture content of the skin. This includes environmental aggressors such as pollution and UV exposure, stress, hormones, and skincare routines.”

How to Know if Skin Is Dry or Dehydrated

Sometimes, it can be difficult to determine what’s going on with your skin just by looking at it. Do I have dry skin? Do I have dehydrated skin? Could I have both? (Unfortunately yes, you might.) A common method to determine if you have dehydrated skin is by giving yourself a little pinch.

Pinch a tiny corner of your skin—gently! It can be your cheek, your belly, your arm, or the back of your hand. Hold for a few seconds, then let go. Because dehydrated skin loses elasticity, if your skin is thirsty, it will take longer than normal to snap back into place.

According to Allawh, other physical manifestations of dehydrated skin include:

 • Skin Complexion. Those with dehydrated skin may in fact have an oily appearance, but have a dull skin complexion because of the lack of water.
 • Skin lines. Unlike those with dry skin, those with dehydrated skin may have more prominent skin lines and may even show signs of premature skin aging (i.e., fine lines, wrinkles, and furrows).
 • Itch. Unlike dry skin, dehydrated skin typically does not itch. Dry skin may even cause the skin to feel tight or even slightly irritated with application of over-the-counter topical creams and lotions. Dry skin may also cause skin flaking whereas dehydrated skin causes a diminished skin complexion.

What’s the difference between adding moisture and increasing hydration?

Turns out, hydration and moisturization are not the same things either. Luckily, some products perform double duty. But make sure you’re getting both hydrating and moisturizing ingredients into your routine to tackle dryness and dehydration.

“Hydration is key to maintaining a protective skin barrier and preventing (and treating) both dry and dehydrated skin, says Allawh. “Niacinamide, ceramides (lipids that restore the protective skin barrier), hyaluronic acid, vitamin E, and glycerin, among other ingredients, further promote hydration and are also critical for restoring damaged, dry skin.”

To find the right moisturizer for everyday use, she recommends “moisturizing twice daily with an ointment or cream, even if the skin does not appear dry or dull. Moisturizer should be applied within five minutes of cleansing.”

Not On Board With Buccal Fat Removal? Aestheticians Say—Try These At-Home Facial Sculpting Tools Instead https://camillestyles.com/beauty/facial-sculpting-tools/ Sun, 26 Mar 2023 10:00:00 +0000 https://camillestyles.com/?p=226411

Naturally lifted.

The post Not On Board With Buccal Fat Removal? Aestheticians Say—Try These At-Home Facial Sculpting Tools Instead appeared first on Camille Styles.

]]>

By now, you’ve likely heard of buccal fat removal. And if you’re a fellow self-proclaimed beauty lover with a penchant for falling into Internet rabbit holes — you know too much about buccal fat at this point. In layman’s terms: buccal fat is the specific pocket of your cheek between your cheekbones and jaw that essentially dictates the shape of your face. You know it best as the spot you contour with your favorite shade stick. Or the part you suck in when you purse your lips for a photo (as a millennial, I am cursed to forever automatically pose in “duck face” whenever a camera glances my direction). Though it wasn’t on my beauty bingo card, somehow this pocket of cheek fat has captured the attention of the beauty zeitgeist and everyone has been talking about it this year. Namely, what to do with it. To keep or not to keep, that is the question. When contouring is not enough, the buzzy new cosmetic surgery of buccal fat removal has come to offer a more permanent solution. If you’re seduced by the siren call of a snatched, sculpted face, but wary of going under the knife, facial sculpting tools can give non-invasive, at-home results — without getting rid of your buccal fat.

Facial tools have been on the market for a long time. You probably have a face roller or a gua sha in your fridge as we speak. They’ve also been part of beauty rituals for centuries and featured heavily in ancient, Eastern medicine. Suffice it to say, they’re more than just an ephemeral beauty trend. But as beauty standards shift towards more sculpted-looking features, people are looking for at-home solutions to contour their skin without layers and layers of makeup. That’s where facial sculpting tools come in.

skincare - nitsa citrine - bathroom - best beauty tools

The industry has come a long way since jade rollers first became mainstream. Now, facial sculpting tools are versatile and high-tech, using a variety of techniques to get you spa-like results at home. Some tools use suction to lift and contour your face, while others use vibration or heat to break down fat cells and promote lymphatic drainage. There are also tools that combine microcurrents, LED lights, and heat for a multi-pronged approach.

Facial sculpting tools offer a way to transform your face over time, and more naturally than cosmetic procedures. They also provide anti-aging benefits to defy the effects of gravity by pulling your skin upwards and smoothing fine lines and less elastic skin on the cheeks, chin, jawline, and neck.

But as thorough as my research rabbit holes get, I thought I’d get an expert opinion. To explain all things buccal fat, lymphatic drainage, and facial sculpting to me — in the simplest terms possible — I consulted Elina Wang, CEO & Co-Founder of ESW Beauty; and Amy Falcon, medical aesthetician at Miami Plastic Surgery.

TLDR: yes, you can get a super-snatched, sculpted face at home. It just takes a lot of time. And ruthlessly disciplined consistency. Time to get habit-stacking, everyone! Read on to discover the ins and outs of facial sculpting tools and how they can transform your face.

Elina Wang

CEO & Co-Founder of ESW Beauty

Amy Falcon

Medical aesthetician at Miami Plastic Surgery

How do facial sculpting tools actually work?

Falcon: Facial sculpting tools like gua sha, jade rollers, and facial massage devices can definitely help to contour your face and give you a more sculpted appearance. They work by applying pressure to your facial muscles, which helps to relieve tension and promote circulation. This can help to reduce puffiness and define your facial structure.

Wang: Yes they do work, but it takes time. My favorite sculpting tool is the Gua Sha, a multifunctional tool that can sculpt, relieve tension, firm and smooth the skin, and boost circulation. It will not be a product where you can achieve a fully chiseled face overnight, but if you use it consistently, you will begin to see results in two weeks.

Can you achieve a more sculpted face at home?

Wang: Clinical procedures always provide a more permanent and instant result that at-home tools cannot replicate as quickly. But if you use at-home tools consistently, you can achieve similar results over time. Oftentimes even if you do go through a facial sculpting procedure, it is recommended to use at-home tools to maintain the appearance.

Falcon: It’s definitely possible to achieve a more sculpted appearance at home using facial sculpting tools and techniques! However, it’s important to keep in mind that buccal fat removal is a more invasive procedure that can’t be replicated with at-home treatments. Some facial sculpting tools that can help you achieve a more sculpted appearance include gua sha, jade rollers, facial massage devices, and facial cupping sets.

While facial sculpting tools can help to maintain a more sculpted appearance over time, they’re not designed to produce permanent results. Think of them more as a way to enhance your natural features and keep your skin looking its best.

Any caution for using facial sculpting tools?

Falcon: Overuse or improper use of these tools can lead to skin irritation, bruising, or other adverse effects. It’s also important to keep the tools clean and sanitized to prevent the spread of bacteria. If you’re not sure how to use a particular facial sculpting tool, it’s always a good idea to consult with a licensed esthetician or skincare professional.

What are the best facial sculpting tools?

Falcon: Both electro current and lymphatic drainage practices can be effective in promoting a more sculpted facial appearance. Electrocurrent treatments use low-level electrical currents to stimulate your facial muscles, which can help to tone and tighten your skin. Lymphatic drainage practices, on the other hand, involve gentle massage techniques that can reduce puffiness and promote a more defined facial structure.

Wang: Using a mix of both an electric current device, such as the NuFace device, which is a favorite of mine, or a self-lymphatic drainage massage, which can be achieved with a Gua Sha, are the best pair. Once in a while, going to an in-person lymphatic drainage massage can be effective if you have an important event to attend and want quick results, but in general, for overall improvement, being consistent at home is the way to go.

Best manual facial sculpting tools

Wang: Using a Gua Sha will provide long-lasting results, but similar to being consistent with exercising and eating healthy, using a Gua Sha often, I recommend daily, and having it become a routine in your lifestyle is how you will achieve the sculpted look for your face.

For the best gua shas and other facial sculpting tools, try:

ESW Beauty Hibiscus White Tea Rose Quartz Gua Sha

Reduce inflammation, lift, and contour with this high-quality rose-quartz gua sha.

Wildling Lumin Cupping Set

This facial cupping set is made to contour the large and small sections of your face for a complete lift. Promote lymphatic drainage, increase blood flow, and reduce puffiness to give your skin a more sculpted look.

Ranavat Kansa Wand Facial Massaging Tool

This Ayurvedic facial massage tool helps to balance the skin’s pH with its copper and tin exterior. It also massages the energy points on your face to boost circulation, plump, firm, and soften the appearance of fine lines while sculpting your skin.

Skin Gym Face Sculptor™ Beauty Roller

This facial roller mimics professional facial massages with a shape that compliments your facial structure for a targeted contouring effect.

Osmosis Beauty EPIC Duo Skin Tool

Copper alloy technology stimulates energy flow with a 360-degree roller on one side and a gua sha on the other. It gently glides over facial contours to help products absorb better while promoting lymphatic drainage, increasing circulation, firming, smoothing, and re-energizing the skin.

Best microcurrent facial sculpting tools

Falcon: One of the non-invasive options I recommend is the microcurrent facial. It uses a low-level electrical current to stimulate the facial muscles, promoting muscle tone and firmness. This treatment can help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, lift and firm sagging skin, and enhance skin radiance. It’s a gentle and relaxing treatment that requires no downtime, and the results can last up to several days.

Another non-invasive option that I recommend is radiofrequency skin tightening. This treatment uses radiofrequency energy to heat the deeper layers of skin, promoting collagen production and skin tightening. It can help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, lift and firm sagging skin, and enhance skin texture. It’s a comfortable and safe treatment that requires no downtime, and the results can last up to several months.

To replicate these treatments at home, try:

NuFACE Trinity Starter Kit

Arguably the most famous microcurrent tool on the market — and for good reason. Known as the “five-minute facelift,” the gentle microcurrents and unique shape hug your face and leave you instantly lifted with cumulative results over time.

Solawave 4-in-1 Skincare Wand with Red Light Therapy

An upcoming star in the microcurrent market, this small but mighty wand is a 4-in-1 tool. It packs microcurrent technology, red light therapy, therapeutic warmth, and massage technology to rejuvenate and sculpt your skin.

Shani Darden Facial Sculpting Wand

This celebrity esthetician’s line uses her signature vibration therapy to smooth and sculpt your face with two attachments on one sleek wand.

Joanna Vargas Magic Glow Wand

This lymphatic drainage tool uses targeted temperature and massage settings to mimic the natural flow of the lymphatic system. The four different treatments help firm, sculpt, and more.

Dr Levy The Contour Pro

Based on Dr. Levy’s clinically-proven injectable techniques & ground-breaking anatomy research, the Contour Pro provides professional-level, non-invasive recontouring by sculpting and tightening skin – offering a full facial workout from the muscles up to the skin surface.

The magic of microneedling can get lost in the prickliness of it all. The idea of tiny needles and thousands of “micro injuries” isn’t exactly exciting, but the benefits—collagen production, smoother complexion, and brighter skin—are well worth it. And with the current wealth of derma rollers on the market, it’s possible to mimic the in-office magic on a smaller scale at home. That being said, not all at-home devices are made equal, so we’ve researched the best microneedling pens available to help you reap the glowy benefits.

But before we dig in, it’s important to understand what makes at-home microneedling work—and if it does at all. (Note: it may depend on your tool.)

The Difference Between Professional Microneedling and At-Home Tools

The most major difference, apart from the setting, is the needles’ depth. Professional treatments use needles ranging from 0.5 to 2.5 millimeters in length (for reference, BeautyBio’s popular at-home roller needles are 0.3 mm) and often combine the stimulating treatment with PRP (platelet rich plasma, drawn from your own blood) or radio frequency to encourage healing and boast the glow potential.

And while nothing can replace the magic of in-office microneedling treatments, which are typically recommended for addressing textural issues like fine lines, wrinkles, or scarring), a similar—if not quite as dramatic—skin brightening, pore tightening effect can be achieved through at-home tools with regular use over a longer period of time.

Derma Stamps vs. Derma Rollers

Compared to derma stamps, derma rollers tend to be more prevalent (they also cover more ground, literally, than the more pen-like stamps), but most dermatologists aren’t big fans. “They can cause tears in the skin, because the needles are puncturing the skin at an angle,” shared SkinSpirit Medica Esthetician Dali Gandara over email.

Or as Kasey Boone of Glow Skincare LA put it, “A roller is a big no for me. The stamp is the only way to go.”

The Best Microneedling Pens of 2023

When it comes to something as sensitive as microneedling, tools and precision matter. For those looking to supplement in-office treatment or further target acne scars and fine lines, the following microneedling pens are a safe bet.

And remember, the best derma stamps are safe for most skin types, but avoid treating an area with active acne to prevent spreading bacteria.

FaceGym Faceshot Electric Microneedling Device

Part electric microneedling tool, part glycolic acid delivery device, the slick-looking pen is easy-to-use with reviewers raving about the brightening effects and relatively painless experience.

The only downside: the FaceGym kit only includes three ampules of the vitamin treatments, so you’ll have to keep repurchasing.

Banisher 2.0 – Microneedling Stamp 24k Gold Plated

For just $69, the Banisher is the most affordable option on this list, and its fans are obsessed with its 24k gold-plated titanium bristles.

“This is my all-time favorite microneedling treatment,” esthetician Kasey Boone says. “It is easy to use and can be used once a week with no downtime. The results have been so good I stopped using Botox!”

Dr. Pen Ultima M8 Professional Microneedling Pen

With its multitude of needle cartridges (including three with 36 pins each), customizable speed, and rechargeable battery, this popular, wireless pen may be the best bang for your buck.

Beauty ORA Electric Microneedle Derma Pen System

The innovative device features an adjustable needle length (up to 2 mm), five speed levels, and can be used on the body to target scars, fine lines, and stretch marks.

The Things We Do Dew & Go Microneedling Infusion Stamp

The Camille Styles team (and many others) have been obsessed with this set for a while now. “After indulging in the treatment, I wake up the next morning with skin that looks ultra-fresh and supple, and I continue to see the plumping effects throughout the month before the next time I use it,” beauty editor Kristin Corpuz shared in 2021.

“De-influencing” is the latest buzzword to hit our social feeds. And if you think it sounds straightforward, sorry to disappoint. Despite the name, de-influencing is still just influencing. For a moment, it felt like a refreshing break from the endless stream of ads on social media. Don’t get me wrong, I love getting recommendations from my favorite content creators, but scrolling through a sea of sponsored posts can get a little overwhelming. (Cue the decision fatigue!) De-influencing began as a movement to give an honest, realistic take on the viral products we probably don’t all need. What does all of this have to do with overrated skincare products? Clearly, the topic was on my mind as I sat down to dish on the items your medicine cabinet could do without.

When it comes to my own purchases, I’ve found that the only antidote to social media-based overconsumption is spending in alignment. (And yes, limiting my screen time). I’ve been practicing taking time—and a few deep breaths—before making purchases. That way, I don’t end up adding things to my cart purely out of fear that they’ll sell out before I buy into the next trend.

By slowing down my purchasing process, I’ve begun to realize how much more satisfied I feel with what I decide to buy.

Overrated Skincare Products: Experts Share What to Ditch

I’ve also done a fair amount of reflection and journaling on why I feel the need to buy into the next new trend. And nowhere is the desire to have and try the Next Big Thing more pronounced than it is in the beauty industry. Every new buzzy ingredient and skincare hack promises to transform your skin—and by extension, your life. Sure, these promises can be seductive. But don’t we know by now that the best skincare routine is one that is consistent and personal?

I’ll admit, I have some viral and trendy skincare products on my own top shelf. And I think there’s value in the first-person reviews you find on social media. But some products just aren’t worth the hype. And wouldn’t you like to know that before you hit the “buy now” button? Especially when some skincare trends can actually do damage to your skin?

“A lot of times, skincare trends go viral because they’re effective. Sometimes it’s because they’re sensational or shocking (using nail files to shape your teeth anyone?),” says Dr. Heather Smith. a dual-certified physician in Critical Care Medicine and Internal Medicine and the founder of bareLUXE Skincare. “There can be a real risk of harm to your health if you follow some trends that are just downright unsafe.”

So, in an attempt to further “de-influence” myself from trends that could be sneakily sabotaging my skin, I asked experts, founders, and dermatologists about the most overrated skincare products. Read on to discover what they said, and how to get those viral results without damaging your skin.

Contouring With Sunscreen

The act of choosing areas of your face to not protect from UV rays is just backward thinking. The look you’re going for can easily be achieved using bronzer or sunless tanner. DIY Facial Masks

DIY facial masks are becoming increasingly popular, but they may not always be the best way to care for one’s skin. Many homemade facial masks contain ingredients such as lemon juice, baking soda, and vinegar that can irritate the skin if used too frequently or without proper dilution. Additionally, these substances can strip away natural oils from the skin, leading to dryness and irritation. — Dr. Harikiran Chekuri

DIY Baking Soda Scalp Scrubs

Using DIY baking soda scalp scrubs can be harmful to the scalp. Though baking soda can be a remedy for various skin and scalp issues, it can be damaging with constant usage. Baking soda has a high pH level. It can disrupt the natural pH of the scalp. It can also strip away natural oils. In response, the scalp will overproduce oil, resulting in greasiness. In worse cases, baking soda can cause micro-tears on the scalp. These micro-tears will irritate and inflame the skin. The prolonged use of baking soda as a scalp scrub can cause irritation and worse, chemical burns. — Dr. Michael May

Nut-Based Exfoliating Scrubs

Nut-based exfoliating scrubs do appear to be an excellent, all-natural substitute for abrasive chemical exfoliants. Yet, the truth is that the coarse nut fragments—like walnut shells, for example—do more harm to your face than good. Your skin may become irritated and break out as a result of the jagged edges’ little scrapes. Use gentle exfoliants like glycolic acid or microfiber cloths instead. — Marie Littlewood

Toothpaste for Spot Treatments

The common drying components like baking soda, hydrogen peroxide, and alcohol that may be found in many tubes of toothpaste are to blame for the myth that toothpaste is a quick and effective treatment to decrease spots overnight. While these substances can be the key to getting pearly whites, the formulations are frequently excessively potent and can make dry skin disorders like eczema and dermatitis worse. Spot treatments with salicylic acid or benzyl peroxide will produce better results without endangering the skin. — Marie Littlewood

Using Oils That Are Not Suitable for Your Skin Type

Natural oils are commonly used (and keep gaining popularity) in skincare as they contain many healthful substances that are shown to nourish the skin. With regular use, it will appear softer and more hydrated. Oils can be applied in their pure form or delivered with creams, serums, and masks enriched with oily compounds.

In both cases, it’s important to remember that several oils are shown to be comedogenic. It means they can clog pores and cause breakouts. So, choosing the option that suits your skin type is crucial to prevent unwanted consequences. Oily and combination skin types are especially susceptible to this as they are naturally more acne-prone.

Highly comedogenic oils you should avoid applying on your face are cacao, palm, coconut, and wheat germ oil. Moderately comedogenic oils (meaning they can act differently and need to be tried with caution to see if they work for your individual skin condition) are corn, almond, macadamia, olive, soybean, apricot, grape seed, avocado, and jojoba oil. Non-comedogenic oils that are safe for all skin types are shea butter, argan, and rosehip oil. — Valerie Aparovich

Blackhead Removal Devices and Masks

Something that rose to popularity not too long ago were the blackhead masks, which, when dry, would be peeled off your skin alongside the blackheads from your pores. That is not entirely true, in fact, these face masks can cause more damage than you think. Because of how difficult and sometimes even painful peeling these off is, they can cause your skin to lose elasticity and even harm your skin barrier.

Another recent trend is the devices that claim to “suck” on your skin to clean your pores. While this may work, the force of these can also damage the elasticity of your skin. All in all, try to stay away from products that claim to pull out your blackheads. It’s best to see a professional. — Natalia Grajcar

At-Home Dermaplaning

One popular skincare trend is dermaplaning at home. Oftentimes, individuals think that they can perform this treatment from their home just as they would receive this service at a skincare studio. However, in most cases, individuals have not done extensive research about the proper tools (i.e., drugstore face razors), techniques, precautions, and products required to perform this treatment, which can damage the skin.

Dermaplaning is a skincare procedure that involves using a sterile surgical scalpel to gently scrape off the top layer of dead skin cells and vellus hairs (known as peach fuzz) from the surface of the skin. It can help improve the appearance of the skin by reducing fine lines, wrinkles, and dullness. It is a delicate and potentially risky procedure, especially for those who are not trained or experienced in doing it. Some of the risks associated with at-home dermaplaning include skin irritation, cuts, infection, scarring, and even accidental injury.

There are several alternatives to dermaplaning that can be done at home to help improve your overall skin appearance:

 • Exfoliating. Regular exfoliation can help remove dead skin cells and impurities, revealing smoother and brighter skin.
 • Facial steaming. Steaming your face can help open up pores, soften skin, and promote circulation.
 • Masks. Exfoliating or hydrating masks are a quick, safe, and easy way to give your skin a boost of hydration and nourishment. — Mileya Slough

Prior to the pandemic, my nighttime skincare routine was pretty basic. Cleanse, moisturize, and attempt to sleep in the supine position—aka, not face-planted into the pillow. That was until Covid anxiety gave me a serious case of the frownies. I’m talking fine lines, wrinkles, crepiness, and complexion dullness. That the pandemic just happened to align with me entering my 40s certainly didn’t help. When time marches across your face, it doesn’t walk with a light step. In fact, I’d say it pretty much did an Irish jig. Today, I’m diving deep into the most effective anti-aging secret I know, (well seven secrets to be exact): the best retinol creams for beginners.

Experts Share the Best Retinol Creams for Beginners

With my forehead giving me a peek of my future face and the bags under my eyes packed for what seemed to be a long staycation, I decided to ramp up my personal skincare approach and practice an ounce of prevention, powder room-style.

Now, my nighttime routine goes a little something like this:

In two years, I’ve gone from knowing virtually nothing about skincare to considering myself a skincare and product freak. But in the end, after all the new steps, I’d say the single most impactful addition to my routine is retinol. Incorporating this magic into the mix 2-3 times a week managed to smooth out some of my uninvited creases and crinkles and seriously improve my overall coloring.

Eager to learn more, I hit up two experts in the world of skincare to help novices (like I admittedly still am). They’re sharing everything from what retinol actually is to why we should be making it an (almost) daily practice to the best retinol creams for beginners. The two experts in question? Director of Laser & Cosmetic Dermatology at UT Dell and Ascension Texas, Tyler Hollmig, M.D., and Austin-based esthetician, Rachel Spillman. They give us the retinol-infused scoop below—plus, keep scrolling for their favorite retinol reccos.

What exactly is retinol?

Dr. Hollmig explains that retinol is a type of retinoid, a class of medicines that are essentially forms, or “derivatives,” of vitamin A. There are numerous types of retinoids that can be helpful for the skin. Retinoids are all related to each other, but they have different strengths and different purposes.

He continues, noting that isotretinoin (Accutane), for example, can be incredibly helpful in pill form for severe acne. There are also other types of these “systemic” retinoids (oral meds) that are helpful for skin diseases like psoriasis and other inflammatory skin disorders, along with the prevention of skin cancers.

“Other retinoids are used topically but require a prescription,” notes Dr. Hollmig, “like tretinoin (Retin-A), which is often used for acne and is helpful for mitigating skin aging as well. Adapalene (Differin) recently transitioned from a prescription topical med for acne and skin aging to over-the-counter.”

Retinol is a milder, OTC form of these vitamin A derivatives and serves as an active ingredient in many skincare products. It may offer some of the benefits of its fellow retinoids but with potentially fewer side effects.

A key point: Many skincare companies market the idea that all retinoids are alike (and therefore imply that their retinol cream will have the same effects as, say, tretinoin). But this is not just the same Moira Rose wearing a different wig—the specific type of retinoid actually matters quite a bit.

The Benefits of Retinol

“There are numerous potential benefits of using a retinol,” says Dr. Hollmig. “At the same time, I always caution patients to start slow with these and to be sure they know exactly what they are using. Because of the very light regulation on cosmetic products, many skincare products are almost like snakeoil pushed by what I refer to as the cosmetic-industrial complex.”

But back to the benefits—and you can bet there are plenty. According to Dr. Hollmig, the potential benefits include:

 • Improved acne—specifically “comedonal” acne, which is blackheads and whiteheads.
 • Reduced excess secretion from oil glands (sebum production), which can play a role in acne as well.
 • Mitigated skin aging. Retinoids may reduce skin aging by changing how skin cells function at a molecular level.

Dr. Hollmig dives into this further, noting that retinoids “stimulate collagen production and inhibit the breakdown of collagen that already exists, and they thicken skin by increasing cellular proliferation. These processes can help reduce fine lines and even skin tone.”

What are the most crucial steps in any skincare routine?

“The most important skincare product to start with is sunscreen,” Dr. Hollmig emphasizes. “This helps reduce skin cancer and skin aging by reducing extrinsic aging from UV light. As certain wavelengths of light that age the skin penetrate window glass and can even be emitted from cell phones and computer screens, a great broad-spectrum UV blocker is critical, even for kids.”

The second most important skincare product? Dr. Hollmig recommends looking for an active ingredient that targets your specific skin concerns. “For patients trying to even skin tone, for example, using something with vitamin C or another lightening active may be helpful.”

When should someone start using a retinol cream specifically?

“Retinol products are most helpful for patients who are either experiencing some mild, superficial acne, or are trying to reduce development of fine lines,” says Dr. Hollmig. He also observes that many of his patients notice dull skin, larger pores, and early fine lines around their late 20s or mid-30s. “This is largely due to a natural reduction in the amount of collagen produced by the skin along with other aging factors.”

Solution? “Using a topical retinol to start depositing collagen in the bank, can be a really helpful preventative strategy for reducing skin aging.”

Where should be included in our skincare routine?

Dr. Hollmig cautions that retinol isn’t for everyone, and to watch out for its known side effect of drying the skin. “Patients with really dry and sensitive skin may not be able to tolerate these. Most of my patients, however, can tolerate a light retinol, especially when combined with a good moisturizer.”

Believe what you’ve heard about using retinol as a nighttime-only product. “I advise patients to apply moisturizer on top. Certain regions are more sensitive to skin irritation, like the corners of the nose, for example, so some of my patients will apply vaseline or Aquaphor as a spot treatment to protect these areas before applying retinol elsewhere on the face,” Dr. Hollmig notes.

What are major dos and don’ts when it comes to retinol?

“The main risk with using retinol is causing skin irritation and dryness,” cautions Dr. Hollmig. “If this is a new active ingredient for a patient, I would start slowly—using it every 2 or 3 nights for a couple of months before gradually increasing to daily use.”

Dr. Hollmig elaborates, likening an effective retinol routine to running a marathon. “You have to build up endurance over time. Additionally, I recommend only introducing one active at a time. If retinol is combined with other ingredients that may irritate the skin, like hydroxy acids for example, the combined effect may cause skin irritation and peeling.”

The good news? “We are living in the golden age of skincare. “There are so many incredible products out there, and there is no longer a one-size-fits-all approach. Taking a personalized approach to skincare is the way to go, and patients shouldn’t hesitate to reach out to their dermatologist for help,” Dr. Hollmig advises.

What are your favorite retinol creams for beginners?

While retinol is widely known, retinal is still gaining traction in the skincare world. Spillman shares her thoughts as to why: “Retinal is hard to keep stabilized in product containers and is probably more expensive for companies to buy. I call retinal ‘the gentle cousin to retinol.’ It has the same benefits as retinol but with little to no irritation,” the esthetician notes.

As for use, Spillman says that “Most beginners can start using retinal products every day versus spacing a retinoid product 1-3 times per week. Retinal, also known as retinaldehyde, is still vitamin A but doesn’t cause heavy irritation and peeling like anything under the retinoid umbrella of products like Tretinoin, Adapalene, Tazarotene, and retinol.”

Personally, Spillman carries most of the above list in her shop and has tried all of them on her rosacea skin. “I personally only use retinol 2x a week and retinal 4x per week, but I don’t use both at the same time. It’s important to add that when someone starts with either of these, they shouldn’t be using any other exfoliating products in their routine. They should also stop using these products altogether 2-4 days before and after a facial appointment.”

Your future looks glowy.

The post How to *Really* Use Hyaluronic Acid: Dos and Don’ts You Need to Know appeared first on Camille Styles.

]]>

What if I told you there was a magical skincare potion that could naturally infuse moisture and bounce into your skin, soften wrinkles, and give you a dewy glow—no visit to the derm required? That’s the magic of hyaluronic acid. But as hyped up as this buzzy ingredient is, it can’t work its wonders without proper application. That’s why today, we’re diving into all the dos and don’ts of how to use hyaluronic acid for healthy, glowy skin.

It’s no secret that hyaluronic has been everywhere these past few years. I’ve seen it popping up in everything from cleaners to oils to masks to oral beauty supplements. All these different formulations got me wondering whether all hyaluronic acid treatments were alike, or if (as I hypothesized) certain ways of getting the good stuff were better than others. And so my research began. Turns out, my hunch was right.

Expert Secrets Behind How to Use Hyaluronic Acid

How, when, and in what formulation… these things really do matter when it comes to getting your daily dose of HA. So, I connected with the team at Olay to set the story straight. (When it comes to what’s right and what’s wrong, think minimum effort, max results.) Scroll on for the secrets to your most beautiful, moisturized skin…

applying skincare, how to use hyaluronic acid

What is hyaluronic acid?

First, a quick lesson on what makes hyaluronic acid the wonder ingredient that it is. HA acts as a “humectant.” This means that it works like a sponge to help the skin retain water and plump it up. We actually have natural levels of hyaluronic acid in our skin, but as we age, they slowly deplete. This leads to wrinkles and a loss of bounce in the skin.

HA has the incredible capacity to attract and hold onto 1000x its weight in moisture. And herein lies the key. Hyaluronic acid should be used either in a moisturizer or in conjunction with your moisturizing products. When you add moisture to the skin, you’re giving the HA added water to absorb and hold onto, rather than pulling moisture out of dry skin.

Instead, HA brings moisture to the surface of the skin and holds it there, keeping the skin continually moisturized throughout the day. To test this in action, I’ve been experimenting with my favorite hyaluronic acid products over the past few years (see below). There’s no doubt that my skin is visibly dewier and smoother, with increased elasticity. And it stays that way all day without ever getting greasy.

Common Hyaluronic Acid Mistakes

These are a few of the most common mistakes made when incorporating hyaluronic acid into a skincare routine—and how to fix them so this super ingredient can do its job right.

Mistake 1: Using Hyaluronic Acid Without Moisturizer

Since HA can hold a lot of water, just think about it: it needs moisture to work. If the skin is already dry and HA is applied in a formula that doesn’t add moisture (think cleanser, toner, or light serum), it will pull moisture from wherever it can, like from deep within your skin, where it can then evaporate into the air if not sealed properly.

On the other hand, when HA is formulated within a deeply hydrating moisturizer (or again, a moisturizer is used after), that emollient will penetrate and lock moisture into the skin, which is, of course, the goal.

applying skincare, how to use hyaluronic acid

Mistake 2: Not Using Hyaluronic Acid as the Final Step in Skincare

With all the fancy HA formulations on the market now (serums, pills, masks, and so much more), it can be tempting to adopt a “more the merrier” mentality. However, some research has shown that overuse of hyaluronic acid can result in redness and inflammation. The takeaway: Choose the one step where you’ll get the biggest bang for your buck. Since we’ve established that HA needs moisture-packed padding for optimal effectiveness, locking it in (within a rich, well-formulated moisturizer) as the final step in your AM and PM skincare routine will leave you with hours of smooth, bouncy skin.

serum

Mistake 3: Applying Hyaluronic Acid To Dry Skin

When HA is applied to dry skin in dry conditions, it will naturally pull moisture from wherever it can. So, if there’s low humidity in the air, it draws moisture from the deeper layers of skin and brings it to the surface, where it then evaporates and leaves skin drier than it was in the first place.

But when you start your HA skincare routine with a damp face, it has a reserve of moisture to pull from, plain and simple. Understanding this has been a game changer that’s resulted in my healthiest, most moisturized skin ever.

So, prepare yourself for my new favorite new skincare hack. Each morning and evening, I mist my face with water, then apply my chosen hyaluronic acid serum products, then mist again.

When hyaluronic acid comes into contact with water, my skin will end up hydrated and healthy. In the morning, I have a smooth canvas for my makeup—none of that “settling into fine lines” thing happening around my eyes these days.

Slugging 101—Dermatologists Break Down TikTok’s Skin Trend Du Jour https://camillestyles.com/beauty/slugging-skincare-products/ Fri, 10 Mar 2023 11:00:00 +0000 https://camillestyles.com/?p=224774

The post Slugging 101—Dermatologists Break Down TikTok’s Skin Trend Du Jour appeared first on Camille Styles.

]]>

Plenty of strange skincare trends have taken the beauty industry by storm. But slugging? Far less obscure than it sounds. (Hint: There’s a reason you’ve been seeing Vaseline and Aquaphor everywhere.) Turns out, applying a thick moisturizer at night creates effortlessly glazed skin by day. But if that sounds too good to be true, you’re right to be cautious—as am I. So, rather than going to TikTok for the answers, I took my questions to the experts.

Featured image from our interview with Sanetra Nere Longno by Michelle Nash.

Everything You Need to Know About Slugging

“Slugging is simply slathering an occlusive as a final step of your skincare routine to lock in moisture and prevent water loss,” says Dr. Rosmy Barrios, MD, a medical advisor and Head of Anti-Aging for the Health Reporter and a regenerative medicine specialist. “It’s a K-beauty trend that was popularized by TikTok users and it works pretty well if you do it right. When you coat your skin with Vaseline, it looks shiny and slimy, more like a ‘slug’ and that’s how it gets the name.”

Similarly, “skin flooding” is a new trend based on layering hydrating products to lock in moisture. The star ingredient of “skin flooding” is hyaluronic acid, followed by moisturizers and occlusives. And while slugging is saved for the nighttime, skin flooding can be done both day and night. By the TikTok-transitive property, slugging could be considered a form of skin flooding.

By the TikTok-transitive property, slugging could be considered a form of skin flooding.

Perhaps what distinguishes slugging the most from other trends is that it’s approved by dermatologists. Like with all good things, its beauty is in its simplicity. Petroleum jelly is a beauty secret as old as time. I personally grew up smearing Vaseline on my face morning and night. While it might seem scary to grease your face with goopy-textured goo, you might be missing out on majorly glowy skin.

Another reason slugging has gone mainstream? Its potential benefits for most skin types. While it was originally touted as a remedy for dry skin, slugging has powerful wound-healing capabilities for blemish-prone skin and anti-aging abilities for mature skin.

To learn more, I spoke to board-certified dermatologists Rosmy Barrios MD, and dermatologist Dr. Michelle Henry.

Shanika Hillocks, slugging skincare products

What is slugging?

Dr. Henry explains. “Skin slugging is using a thick petroleum product that is more occlusive as the last step in your skin routine. Slugging reduces transepidermal water loss, which in turn helps the skin retain moisture better.”

What does slugging do for your skin?

“It’s important to understand that the balance of skin cells and lipids is crucial for your skin barrier,” says Dr. Barrios. “Think of lipids as a glue that keep the outermost layer of your skin intact. Any reduction in lipids compromises your skin, leading to transepidermal water loss. This means the glue gets damaged and your skin’s protective barrier lets the water out. An occlusive like Vaseline jelly can fix that.”

Slugging is also a way to build up your skin barrier and restore a damaged skin microbiome. Plus, when you seal in your skincare routine by slugging, everything you put under your final layer works better.

serum, slugging skincare products

What are the benefits of slugging?

Softer skin overnight? Yes, please. Dr. Henry loves the practice as a strategy for locking in moisture and waking up with hydrated skin in the morning.

Dr. Barrios agrees. “The biggest benefit of slugging is that it gives you baby-soft and hydrated skin. By reinforcing your lipid barrier, it strengthens the way your skin protects itself. Plus, it improves the effectiveness of your skincare products by acting as an external protective layer over them.”

What to Look For in Slugging Products

Dr. Henry recommends petroleum-based products. “They are not breathable and will lock in moisture to your skin. I recommend Vaseline, Aquaphor, or CeraVe Healing Ointment.”

“Look for occlusive ingredients such as petrolatum and lanolin to effectively create a protective barrier over your skin,” says Dr. Barrios. “A simple unscented Vaseline is your best bet, but you can opt for products that contain glycerin and hyaluronic acid as well. Avoid products with fragrances because they will irritate your skin.”

Who should avoid slugging?

“Remember that slugging is not for everyone,” warns Dr. Barrios. “If your skin is acne-prone, slugging can lock in dead skin cells, acne-causing bacteria, and sebum within your skin and make acne worse.”

Dr. Henry adds, “Because skin slugging uses occlusive products, it may clog pores if you have oily or acne-prone skin. While the products themselves are non-comedogenic, if any other products in your routine trigger acne, it will lock it in. If you have oily or acne-prone skin and want to do skin slugging, I’d recommend using a product like retinol or salicylic acid as part of your routine.”

How to Incorporate Slugging Into Your Skincare Routine

Slugging should be the last step of your skincare routine. “It’s important to wash your face thoroughly before you apply Vaseline to your skin because any element of dirt or bacteria will be bad for your skin,” says Dr. Barrios.

Because slugging seals in the products before it, opt for a lighter slate of products when slugging. Ensure they are all non-comedogenic and be careful with using any actives. And since slugging doesn’t hydrate or moisturize your skin itself, it’s not a replacement for your serums and creams. This is where skin flooding comes in. Layering hydrating products can be a godsend for your face overnight—especially if you include a hyaluronic acid serum and an occlusive moisturizer.

When slugging, products should be applied in this order:

 • Cleanser, especially one with gentle exfoliating properties, to slough away dead skin cells and clogged pores
 • Toner to prep your skin and gently sweep away any final debris in your pores or on the surface of your skin
 • Hydrating serum like Hyaluronic acid
 • Any other targeted serum for discoloration or anti-aging
 • Lightweight moisturizer to add a moisturizing layer with humectants and nourishing ingredients
 • Slugging skincare products should be used at the end of your routine

A new way to indulge.

The post “The Shower” Routine Aesthetic—How This Luxe Self-Care Trend Is Making Us Rethink Our Bathing Rituals appeared first on Camille Styles.

Just as every word can now end in “core” and become a movement, the same goes for “Tok.” BookTok. BeautyTok. And now… #ShowerTok. At the time of this article’s publication, the term “aesthetic shower routines” has 39 million views. Videos feature close-ups of shimmery body butters, beautifully lined-up bottles, and #unwindwithme routines. In true social media form, the content is quick, easy to consume (and obsess over), and definitely aspirational. But what is the shower routine aesthetic? And have we collectively moved on from baths and adapted the once-humble shower as our new rinsing ritual? Let’s dive in.

What is “The Shower”?

We live and breathe Pinterest’s annual trends report. Without fail, when it releases in the fall, the Camille Styles team pours over its digital pages, checking to see whether our predictions match the data. The trend I was perhaps most surprised to see? Pinterest reported a 460% increase in searches for “shower routine aesthetic.” Related searches included everything from shower bombs to shower walk-ins—proving that this is a trend that encompasses both beauty and design.

Some factors driving the trend:

 • a widespread push toward water conservation
 • the need for increased floor space
 • an accessible, spa-like bathroom experience

It’s also a trend that’s evolved with our understanding of hair care. Since learning that we should only be washing our hair a few times a week (if that), folks are making the most of their wash days—seeing them more as an opportunity for self-care than a dreaded obligation to put off as long as you can.

How to Create a Shower Routine Aesthetic

After uncovering Pinterest’s prediction, I started noticing people referring to “The Shower” (with the intended capitalization) everywhere. It’s thrown out casually in GRWM Reels and YouTube vlogs. Even while listening to my go-to, Gen Z guilty pleasure podcasts, I’ve noticed the common use of the term. Trinity Tondeleir, host of The Wellness Café podcast, threw out The Shower when describing her ideal bounce-back-from-a-hangover routine. “Do all the products, all the hair masks, your favorite shampoo and body wash.”

The vibes are abundant and nearly excessive. Creating your shower routine aesthetic is about making a necessary task a moment of relaxation and ease during your week.

Ideas for Designing Your Shower Routine Aesthetic

 • String eucalyptus on your shower head. You’ve probably seen this easy DIY on social. It adds a pretty pop of color while infusing your shower with the fresh and clean, mint-like scent of eucalyptus. The perfect excuse to make a trip to Trader Joe’s.
 • Close the door. Simple, but crucial. If you want to truly reap the skin-cleansing benefits of a little steam (and ensure you’re not letting in any of the outside chill), shut the door. Bonus points if you invest in underfloor heating.
 • Create a soothing color palette. Neutral accessories are the name of the game. Opt for towels and a bath mat in hues that instill a sense of calm in your bathroom. Or, if you’re doing a complete design overhaul, incorporate colors—whether your shower tiles or wall paint—that are all about ease. Our Design Editor Stacey recommends aiming for blues, greys, and cool whites.
 • Clear the clutter. There’s nothing more vibe-zapping than a cluttered space. Leave only the essentials—and find other homes for the rest.
 • Update your shower head. Swapping out your shower head for a custom option is easier than you think. Opt for one that filters your water (see below), a rain head, or whatever you prefer to guarantee an even, steady flow.

Three Experts Weigh In: The Truth About What Stress Is Really Doing to Your Skin https://camillestyles.com/beauty/stress-breakout/ Mon, 06 Mar 2023 11:00:00 +0000 https://camillestyles.com/?p=224225

Short answer: chill out.

The post Three Experts Weigh In: The Truth About What Stress Is Really Doing to Your Skin appeared first on Camille Styles.

]]>

A sad truth: for many of us, it feels like life gets busier and more stressful each day. And, as if we needed another thing to stress about, all those anxieties show up on our skin. A stress breakout is a type of hormonal acne that flares up during—you guessed it—periods of high stress. Addressing stress-related bouts of acne is more complex than just trying to “stress less.” To counteract both the physical symptoms and the other long-term health effects of a high-stress life, you have to make both external and internal changes.

Experts on What’s Causing Your Stress Breakout

“Stress comes in a full spectrum,” says Patricia Walker, founder of Farm to Skin and a holistic beauty advocate. “At one end, stress in small doses can help motivate us to meet challenges at work, school, or home. At the other end, it can make us feel overwhelmed, discouraged, and trigger health concerns. Such symptoms can be an inability to sleep, headaches, elevated heart rate, digestive issues, hair loss, skin conditions including acne, redness, rosacea, and itching.”

To get the lowdown on all things stress and its impact on your skin, I also chatted with Colleen Rothschild, whose beauty insights have been honed by her 20+ years of experience in the beauty industry and culminated in the founding of Colleen Rothschild Beauty. Dr. Loretta Ciraldo MD FAAD, a Miami-based board-certified dermatologist with over 40 years experience and founder of Dr. Loretta skincare also shared her invaluable insights.

“Too many of us use a 10x magnifier to look at ourselves. This alone can give you more stress,” says Dr. Loretta. “You are definitely not as bad as those high-mag mirrors make all of us look.”

Turns out, by adopting a holistic approach and switching up your skincare routine when you spot a stress breakout, you can stop acne and prevent future flare-ups. Read on to discover what stress is doing to your skin and how you can fix it—for good.

How Stress Breakouts Show Up on Your Skin

“Stress can show up on the skin in various ways,” says Rothschild.

 • Blemishes. Stress can trigger an increase in oil production, which can clog pores and lead to acne breakouts.
 • Dryness or dehydration. Stress can impair the skin’s natural barrier function, leading to increased water loss and dryness or dehydration of the skin.
 • Redness and irritation. Stress can cause inflammation in the skin, leading to redness, irritation, and sensitivity.
 • Wrinkles and fine lines. Chronic stress can accelerate the aging process by leading to premature wrinkles and fine lines.
 • Dark circles and puffiness. Stress can disrupt sleep patterns, leading to dark circles and puffiness under the eyes.

How Stress Affects Our Skin

According to Walker, “When we experience stress, our bodies release a flood of stress hormones, including adrenaline and cortisol. An increase in these hormone levels triggers an increase in oil production, which can lead to breakouts. Further, when we are under stress, we have a tendency to eat poorly and drink more alcohol. Both of which lead to dehydrated, inflamed skin.”

Stress also triggers flares of most if not all skin disorders, from psoriasis to eczema to acne.

“Our skin has cortisol receptors that then go on to trigger an increase in skin blood vessel dilation, resulting in skin redness and worsening of conditions like rosacea as well as an increase in collagen breakdown, leading to the deepening of lines and wrinkles,” says Dr. Loretta.

What are the long-term effects of stress on your skin?

“Stress can also impair the skin’s natural barrier function, leading to dehydration and increased sensitivity,” says Rothschild.

Most surprising—and anxiety-inducing, ironically—is its impact on premature aging. “Chronic stress can accelerate the aging process by breaking down collagen and elastin in the skin, leading to wrinkles and sagging” Rothschild adds. “Stress can also affect the skin’s microbiome, the community of bacteria and other microorganisms that live on the skin, which can lead to a range of issues.”

How to Prevent a Stress Breakout

“Before we can restore balance to our nervous system, it is important to both recognize when we are feeling overwhelmed and develop an awareness of our stress symptoms. It is important to go beyond recognizing the feeling of stress and actually take the time to understand what the root cause of the stress is,” says Walker.

“It would be almost impossible to completely remove stress from our lives, but we can learn to recognize what triggers it, how our bodies react to it and control how much it affects us. Understanding what makes you feel at ease can help mediate the amount of stress that you feel. Then find time to intentionally add those activities to your daily routine—even if it’s just a few minutes a day!”

To specifically prevent stress pimples, Rothschild adds, “Practice good skincare habits such as using gentle products and protecting the skin from UV damage with sunscreen and staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water.”

How to Get Rid of Stress Breakouts

From Dr. Loretta: “The best approach to lessen the effects of stress on your skin is to determine what visible effect the increased stress is having on your skin and to address the unwanted changes with appropriate skincare. The most successful approach is to address these issues in a more skin-friendly, less aggressive approach, whether they are aging changes or acne, or even hyperpigmentation since increased cortisol can produce excess skin melanin.”

Rothschild recommends the following to soothe and nourish stressed skin:

 • gentle cleansers
 • hydrating moisturizers
 • targeted treatments such as antioxidants and anti-inflammatory ingredients

How to Adjust Your Skincare Routine for Stress

“Take stock of your whole skincare regime,” says Dr. Loretta. Stress might mean taking a step back from stronger ingredients.

She elaborates: “It may be that you have been so stressed out that you are getting more aggressive with your use of exfoliants or retinoids to try to look better, faster. But stress can also make our skin more sensitive, so it is important to dial down on aggressive products, either in the frequency of application or the concentration of the product. So if you are going to start to do at-home peels for hyperpigmentation, acne, or lines and wrinkles, definitely only follow product directions. If you experience a sting or redness, use the product only one-half the amount of time recommended—e.g., every fourth night instead of every other night.”

But remember: consistency is key, Dr. Loretta warns. (And not just for your appearance.) A simple, but dedicated skincare practice can be a moment of the day when you detach from your worries, allowing you to focus on the ritual of self-care.

“Try to have a good morning and evening routine if you don’t already have one. Sometimes being stressed means that we neglect our own self-care. Try to think of your regimens as ‘me time’ and as something positive you are taking the time to do for yourself. This can be helpful to lessen the unwanted changes you’re experiencing from increased stress.”

And, of course, get some sleep!

What ingredients target stress breakouts?

“Unrefined plant oils that contain high amounts of linoleic acid can help regulate skin oil production naturally and restore a healthy balance,” notes Walker. “Avoid synthetic fragrance, preservatives, and other harsh ingredients which can all cause further inflammation.”

Rothschild recommends topical treatments such as serums, masks, and creams containing ingredients like the following to hydrate and soothe the skin:

 • niacinamide
 • vitamin C
 • hyaluronic acid
 • blue agave
 • poppy seed oil
 • matcha tea

Tell me you’re see it, too: #skinbarrier is suddenly everywhere. The hashtag has over three billion views and has taken over beauty TikTok. But what is the skin barrier? And why is everyone talking about it? Before Beauty TikTok made the term popular, conversation surrounding the skin barrier could only be found in the dregs of internet forums and niche social media accounts. I know, because I had to wade through masses of unhelpful information myself. Sure, I’d probably seen and promptly ignored them in a high school bio textbook, but that wasn’t going to tell me why it suddenly hurt to put on all my skincare products. And it definitely wasn’t going to recommend the best skin barrier repair products.

We’ve all been there: getting overenthusiastic about skincare. (My personal vice? Chemical and physical exfoliators. What can I say, I love an at-home microdermabrasion treatment—then feeling it for days.) Your face feels like it’s pulsing, it’s tight no matter what you do, and applying anything but the gentlest of products hurts way more than you can stand. When this started to happen to me more often, it took me a while to realize what it was. Then even longer to realize why. I’d been rough on my skin without giving it back the hydration and moisture it needs to heal.

The Secret Behind a Healthy Skin Barrier

In speaking with April Gargiulo, the founder and CEO of cult-favorite beauty brand Vintner’s Daughter, I learned the key to a healthy skin barrier: a balance of moisture and hydration. “In the world of nutrients, there are water-soluble nutrients and there are oil-soluble nutrients,” she said. Most people don’t understand the difference—and how critical it is to have both. “Moisture is oil. Hydration is water.” If you’re stripping your skin of both, your skin barrier will give up on you.

I asked cosmetic chemist, founder, and CEO of Acaderma, Dr. Shuting Hu, for answers on how to heal your skin barrier. Read on to find out if your skin barrier is damaged and how to fix it. I’ll start with some good news: thankfully, many of the effects of a damaged skin barrier can be reversed.

Run, don’t walk, to learn more about the best skin barrier repair products.

What is your skin barrier?

Dr. Hu gave me the medical what and why behind the skin barrier. According to her, “The outermost layer of your skin, or Stratum Corneum, serves as a protective shield that protects you from environmental stressors, irritation, and inflammation.”

She broke it down even further. “Think of your skin like a brick wall. Your skin is made up of ‘bricks’—the proteins from your skin cells—and is held together by ‘mortar’ which are lipids and fats that create a strong, healthy barrier.” To protect the foundation of our skin, we have to keep this lipid barrier healthy.

As a beauty founder, protecting the skin barrier is a big part of Gargiulo’s work. Her products work in tandem to support skin health, which starts at the skin barrier.

As she put it, the skin barrier is “there to do two things. To protect and to defend—keeping aggressors out, and defending your skin against things that could cause irritation. And then it is there to protect what is in your skin—mostly hydration. And so you need both sides of the coin to achieve your healthiest skin.”

Why is the skin barrier important?

For that coveted dewy glow, a healthy skin barrier is crucial. It’s your line of defense against dehydration and damage. According to Dr. Hu, “it is important to have a healthy skin barrier as its main function is to protect your skin and body from external aggressors such as toxins, chemicals, and allergens while simultaneously regulating and maintaining your body’s water levels. Without the skin barrier, your body would not be able to retain any water and you would be in a constant state of dehydration.”

How do you identify a damaged skin barrier?

But how do you know if your skin barrier is healthy? How can you tell if you have a damaged skin barrier?

Symptoms such as dryness, itching, and inflammation can be signs that there is a disturbance in your skin barrier. Beyond self-inflicted, exfoliation-related beauty faux pas, Dr. Hu lists of common causes, including:

 • oxidative stress (free radicals)
 • environmental factors such as UV radiation and pollution
 • overexposure to blue light

But even the best skin barrier repair products can’t help if the problem is your lifestyle. According to Dr. Hu, these harmful lifestyle factors can include:

 • high-sugar diets
 • stress
 • lack of quality sleep
 • frequent use of harsh products and ingredients
 • over-cleansing with solvents, detergents, perfumes, and other irritating chemicals

What happens when you damage your skin barrier?

When I damaged my moisture barrier, I found out the hard way: a throbbing, stinging pain when I tried to apply my glycolic acid toner. Sensitivity, redness, and inflammation are the most obvious signs of a damaged skin barrier—but they’re not the only signs.

“The existence of chronic inflammation in the epidermis, the outermost layer of your skin, will damage the skin barrier and induce redness, dryness, or irritation,” says Dr. Hu.

She explains further, that the long-term effects of a damaged skin barrier include the loss of collagen, hyaluronic acid, and other anti-aging molecules, which causes wrinkles and loss of elasticity in the skin.

How do you heal a damaged skin barrier?

To fix the damage caused by overworking your skin, nourish it with fewer nutrient-dense ingredients. “Focus on hydration and moisture,” encourages Gargiulo. “Focus on a proper pH for your skin and those nutrients that help balance and add strength and resilience to the skin.”

Ceramides (thick proteins in your skin) are the best of the best when it comes to superstar skin healers. “Ingredients like ceramides are essential and widely used to repair skin barriers by ‘filling’ gaps in your brick wall of cells,” recommends Dr. Hu.

Just don’t get trapped in a cycle of damaging and trying to repair your skin, she warns. “You want to also address what could be causing inflammation. Using anti-inflammatory ingredients while also repairing the damaged cells is crucial to fully heal your skin barrier.”

There are few things that annoy me more than having chapped lips. It’s uncomfortable (and honestly, a little painful). I can’t stop myself from picking at the flakes, and lipstick is a no-go. But worst of all, it feels like nothing I do seems to help. That’s perhaps the most frustrating part of chapped lips—there’s just no quick solve. Anyone else share the struggle? Well, I’ve never been one to back down from a challenge, so I set out to do some serious research on how to moisturize lips—specifically without using chapstick.

From providing a comprehensive guide to the type of skin on our lips to asking our editors for their favorite lip-hydrating products, I think I’ve cracked the code to cracked lips. Read on to find out why chapstick isn’t the answer (gasp, I know), and the best practices to lock in lip moisture—for good.

Why does chapstick not always work?

A major source of my chapped lip frustration is consistently using certain products without seeing any results. So I tapped celebrity aesthetician Brittany Blancato to find out why chapstick isn’t the answer to how to moisturize lips.

“Our lips are delicate and thin. Typically chapsticks are only offering temporary hydration relief while combining other ingredients that may cause irritation,” says Blancato. Once that temporary hydrator seal evaporates, as it quickly does, your lips can feel even drier than they did before. She notes that this creates a cycle of chasing hydration without relief, and in the meantime, the lips become more dry and scaly. Basically my issue to a tee.

In her viral Instagram video, Charlotte Parler, one of the founders of Dieux Skin and a skincare enthusiast, also points out that the skin on our lips doesn’t have any sebaceous glands (oil-producing glands), which is why they tend to get so chapped.

Charlotte Parler‘s Tips for Perfecting the “Moisture Sandwich”

Parler shared her lip-soothing secret on Instagram… AKA my recent savior. Her three-step technique for how to moisturize lips is called the Moisture Sandwich and is designed to not only moisturize, but trap it all in for long-term effects. Implement this into your skincare routine or use it as needed. You can thank her later.

 1. Moisten your lips with a sip of water. As I mentioned earlier, Parler notes that this is extra important because the skin on our lips does not have any sebaceous glands, so the water is a great base.
 2. Lather your lips in a generous coat of lip balm or cream. Following the sip of water, the balm or cream brings immediate moisture to the lips. In her video, Parler uses La Roche-Posay Cicaplast Balm, which is a multi-purpose Vitamin B5 cream for dry skin.
 3. Top it all off with an ointment. This is the third and most important ingredient of the Moisture Sandwich because it traps in all that work you just did and forces your lips to absorb the water and the cream. It’s the top piece of bread keeping it all inside (gotta keep the metaphor going). You can use Aquaphor or Vaseline (I love these mini lip tubs) for this step.

Yes, you might look crazy, but it’s better than flaky lips. I like to do this at night before going to bed so I can let The Sandwich ‘feed’ my lips as I sleep.

Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask

Why I recommend it: This is the last thing I do before I go to sleep, and one of the first things I’m thankful for in the morning. It’s always my answer when someone asks me how to moisturize lips. It uses Laneige’s “Berry Mix Complex,” which is full of antioxidants and vitamin C, along with their Moisture Wrap technology to lock in hydration—all night long. The Moisture Wrap technology is a combination of hyaluronic acid, a humectant (attracts water from the air or skin), and other minerals that act as a barrier on your lips. This product is definitely a cult favorite, as every single one of my friends has it, too.

Merit Tinted Lip Oil in Warm Clear

Why I recommend it: MERIT nailed it with this formula. Clean, efficacious, and free of any potentially toxic additives, this sheer oil leaves my lips super hydrated with the slightest sheen that lasts. Best yet, it never leaves any sticky residue. I always have one of these in my purse, on my desk, and in my makeup bag. (Note: For a hint of color, I also just bought Merit’s Signature lipstick in Millenial—which I love.)

Naturium’s Phyto-Glow Lip Balm

Why I recommend it: Say hello to deeply moisturized, glossy lips. This product from Naturium is the best of both worlds: a super hydrating lip gloss and a nourishing lip balm. I wear it all day, but I particularly love it before going to bed. Made with plant squalane and shea butter, your lips will feel silky smooth in no time. I have this lip balm in clear, but it comes in a few different tints!

LiveTinted, Unity Balm Gloss

Why I recommend it: This gloss is a must-have in my bag and on my desk at all times. I’ve ditched all my other chapsticks for this one product. The uber-hydrating formula is packed with squalane, hyaluronic acid, and vitamins C and E, giving it all those bonus skincare ingredients on top of the hydration. Unlike other glosses, it’s not sticky and it lasts on my lips for hours. Plus, I like that it adds that extra bit of shine for something special. I can also dab it on my skin for extra shine and hydration, which is much appreciated because I love a product that can function in multiple ways.

Revision Skincare Youthful Lip Replenisher

Why I recommend it: It’s difficult to describe my pure love for this product. When your lips are chapped or cracked, there’s nothing like it. Even when your lips aren’t chapped, there’s still nothing that works quite as brilliantly as Revision’s product. Glide on the gooey substance (armed with hyaluronic acid, shea butter, and antioxidants) and your lips will feel plumped and quenched for hours. The only downside is that the product is so gooey and sticky, you might prefer it as a night treatment only. However, if you don’t mind a little Lancome Juicy Tube-style consistency, gloss away all day.

The Lip Balm from Augustinus Bader

Why I recommend it: Ladies and gentlemen, may I introduce you to the lip balm to end all lip balms. This super-nourishing pick from Augustinus Bader is clean, vegan, and offers sustainable packaging. I love slathering all over my lips at night, in the morning, and just about anytime my pucker needs a little love. What’s more? This can double as an eye balm as well. Told you… wonder balm!

Alder New York 4x Lip Balm Set

Why I recommend it: I move around a lot, but the single consistency of my humble abodes seems to be an interest in locales that require an extra bit of hydration infused into my skincare routine. (Oregon, Vermont, Chicago… I have a thing for the harsh weather.)

But once I discovered Alder New York’s four-pack of balms, my lips were transformed—for the better. Unlike other balms (or the no-go chapstick we alluded to above) these sink deeply into my lips, nourishing and hydrating from the inside out. What’s more, I love that they’re fast-absorbing, making the final look more matte than melty. Each balm’s formulation of cocoa butter, candelilla wax, and vitamin E means my lips are getting a clean, but effective treatment.

I have a tube on me at all times. Vanilla Kush in my purse, Eucalyptus Mint on my desk, the unscented balm in my car, and my favorite—Citron—in my pocket, always.

Three Ships Buttercream Hydrating Lip Mask

Why I recommend it: I’m constantly changing purses and diaper bags so I never remember to pack a lip hydrator. In the particularly dry months I use this lip mask during my Sunday wind down bath ritual, but you can use it up to twice a day if you want. I love that this product is 100% plant-derived and leaves your lips soft and supple.
