The slicked back ponytail—it’s a style we’ve seen on everyone, everywhere for years. However, with the popularity of the Clean Girl Look and our work-from-home desire for easy, high-style options, it’s become our go-to hairstyle. The slicked back ponytail is simple and works for anyone, particularly if you want an instant facelift that accentuates your bone structure. So, if you’ve always wanted to know how to do it, keep reading. We have your step-by-step tutorial right here, courtesy of beauty stylist Hannah Zahner. (And guess what? It’s easier than you think.)

Products Needed to Create a Slicked Back Ponytail

To create the slicked back ponytail of your dreams, you’ll need a few basic supplies (so basic that you might already have them in your medicine cabinet!). See Hannah’s recommendations below for her go-to products that will keep your style in place.

Every product is curated with care by our editors and we’ll always give an honest opinion, whether gifted or purchased ourselves. If you buy something through our links, we may earn a small commission at no cost to you.

PATTERN by Tracee Ellis Ross Double-Sided Bristle Brush

Hannah recommends using a bristle brush and/or a bristle brush teasing comb to achieve a slicked-back style (she uses both!). This double-sided option polishes strands to keep flyaways at bay.

Double-Sided Bristle Brush, $20

Goody Ouchless Elastic Hair Ties

Finding the perfect hair tie could arguably be the most important part of achieving this slicked-back style. These no-metal elastics keep hair protected and free of snags, holding locks securely in place all day.

Ouchless Elastic Hair Ties, $4.39

GIMME Beauty Medium Hair Black Bobby Pins

If flyaways won’t stay slicked back, pop in a few bobby pins for a comfortable, all-day hold.

Medium Hair Black Bobby Pins, $3.97

Moroccanoil Hydrating Styling Cream

Styling cream will help transform hair into this high-style look. As Hannah notes below, the more product you use, the more slicked and styled your look will appear. If you want to go more natural, opt for less product. She also loves the dae Cactus Fruit 3-in-1 Styling Cream as an alternative to Moroccanoil.

Hydrating Styling Cream, $16

Living Proof Style Lab Flex Hairspray

Your style should be slicked-back, not stiff. This hairspray works on any hair type or texture to keep your look soft and smooth.

Style Lab Flex Hairspray, $30

How to Style a Slicked Back Ponytail

1. Start with brushed-out hair. Don’t worry if your hair is a day or two old. Dirty hair works great for this style.

2. Decide on your part. For this look, a middle or side-part works best.

3. Apply your styling cream. Work a small amount of styling cream into your hands before smoothing through the root back toward where the pony will be. Remember: more product means a more slick and styled look. A small amount of product will feel more natural and soft—this can work better for an everyday look. Start with a small bit of product and add more as needed.

4. Smooth and gather hair. Using your bristle brush, begin to smooth and gather hair. You can gather high, low, or midways.

5. Secure your pony. Wrap your elastic around your ponytail to secure your style in place. You can leave the black elastic visible or wrap your pony with a small amount of hair from the underside of your ponytail for a more polished look.

Finish the look. Go back with a bristle teasing brush and a small amount of styling cream product or hairspray to smooth down baby hairs.

Tips for Making the Look Your Own

 • Braid it. Once the ponytail is in place, run a bit of styling cream through the length of your ponytail. Wrap hair into a braid until the end of the pony. Secure with an elastic.
 • Curl the pony. While the root stays slick, it can be fun to add some extra volume to your pony. Once the ponytail is secured and in place, wrap sections of your ponytail around a curling iron. Lightly brush through.
 • Make it ultra-slick. If you want an ultra-slick look and all-day hold, use a heavier-duty styling cream like Ouai Matte Pomade and work into roots as you smooth into your pony. Next, once your hair is gathered and secured, get out your straightener and smooth out your ponytail hair in sections.

 • Twist into a bun. Starting with your secured pony, twist the hair as you wrap it around into a bun. Secure with another elastic and bobby pins.
 • Accessorize the look. Add some fun detail to your slicked back ponytail with stick-on pearl accessories or a pony wrap.

Lasenersm Cuff Ponytail Holder

Slicked Back Ponytail: Tips and Tricks

Double up. If you have thicker and heavier hair, instead of wrapping one elastic around all of your hair, use two rubber bands. This allows for extra support and lift to your pony. Keeping the top section clipped out of the way, smooth the lower half into a pony. Gather that pony and the hair you left out on top, and follow the directions above to smooth the top. Wrap the second elastic around all of your hair, securing close to your head.

Apply hairspray strategically. Usually, dirty hair or a little styling cream is enough. However, if you have lots of baby hairs and flyaways, do a quick spritz of hairspray in the problem area. Using your bristle brush or comb, quickly work to smooth the hairs down before the hairspray dries.

Use your natural part. Since this is a more sleek look, it’s usually best to work with whatever part you already have going on. Changing the part with dry hair can cause funky bumps—the last thing you want with a sleek pony. Whether it’s a middle part, slightly off-center, or a side part, this look works with whatever you have going on.

Create extra shine. For extra shine, use a higher-hold styling gel or finish the style with a shine spray like the Kenra Shine Spray

I’m in a hair rut. I’m tired of my current style but I don’t know what to do with it next. Change the color? Change the cut? Go natural and let my hair decide? All I know is that I am BORED. But until I have a plan, I don’t want to do anything drastic (like the winter I had purple hair in high school). Ideally, whatever I do, it doesn’t jeopardize the health of my hair (again… the winter I had purple hair in high school). So, I’m taking preventative measures. After obsessively googling heat protectants, I feel like an expert on every product, supplement, and treatment for hair health. Turns out, you can use essential oils for thicker, longer, and shinier hair. That’s right: good things do come in threes.

I don’t know about you, but I go through the same old cycle every time I do anything with my hair. I love the new style for a while, but the second it starts to grow out, I get frustrated. The in-between period is impossible to work with and I’m itching for the next change. Each time I find myself in this position, I try every new hair-growth fad to coax the hair out of my follicles faster.

Why Essential Oils Could Be a Game-Changer for Hair Health

Oil training? Rice water? Salt scrubs? I’ve tried it all. And I’m sure we all fell into at least one of these traps after being scarred from quarantine cuts. I personally blame TikTok for my less-than-successful experiments, but all those fruitless endeavors left me more selective about the products I use. This has meant researching what ingredients will give me longer hair in the long run. One of the answers? Essential oils.

As I dive deeper into my commitment to using mostly clean beauty products, I’m swapping out my old hair products for new ones. Many of my new finds combine powerful clean ingredients with a cocktail of essential oils for thicker and longer hair, plus a healthier scalp.

To speak on this less exhausting way to finally achieve the shiny, full head of hair I’ve been dreaming of, I spoke to Wendy Iles, founder of the Iles Formula. As one of the industry’s most respected hairdressers and an expert on damaged hair, she told me all about the benefits and limits of using essential oils for thicker hair.

What are essential oils?

According to Iles, “Essential oils are oils that have been distilled and not tampered with. Pure virgin oils, often found in perfumes that are directly extracted from the plant.” From skin care to diffusers, they’re mostly known for their fragrances. However, essential oils also have medicinal qualities. Essential oils for thicker hair work by clearing away residue, eradicating dandruff, stimulating blood flow, and increasing hydration to your thirsty strands. They’re not the be-all-end-all, but they boost efforts in your quest for longer, healthier hair.

A Breakdown of the Best Essential Oils for Hair

Different essential oils have different benefits. The best products combine more than one to take advantage of their anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial, detoxifying, and invigorating qualities.

Rosemary

Rosemary oil is one of the most effective essential oils for stimulating blood flow to create new cells for fuller and thicker hair.

Cedarwood

Cedarwood balances your scalp’s natural oils. Its antifungal properties keep your scalp healthy to make way for longer, thicker hair.

Lavender

Lavender can have physical and emotional effects on hair growth. While reducing inflammation for a healthier scalp, its calming properties can prevent future, stress-related hair loss.

Peppermint

You know how a peppermint patty leaves a tingling feeling in your mouth? Peppermint essential oil does the same when applied topically. It promotes blood flow and circulation to the follicles (hence the tingling) to speed up hair growth and density.

Tea Tree

Tea Tree oil is known for its healing properties, which are as effective on your scalp as they are on your face. It refreshes your scalp, clearing away dead skin cells and excess product to make room for increased hair growth.

Bergamot

Bergamot isn’t just my favorite fragrance, it’s an anti-microbial essential oil that promotes a healthy scalp, and therefore, hair growth.

Orange

Vitamin C is as powerful in your hair as it is on your face. Orange essential oil helps restores moisture content and balances the skin’s pH level.

Sweet Basil

For increased volume, try sweet basil oil for more robust strands with higher hydration.

Lemongrass

Known for reducing dandruff, lemongrass oil does more than that. It also strengthens hair shafts for thicker, more resilient hair.

Thyme

Thyme is one of the best essential oils for thicker hair. It’s often used to treat hair loss and hair thinning, making for a powerful addition to any hair treatment.

How to Use Essential Oils to Thicken or Grow Hair

Pure essential oils are highly potent, so a few drops go a long way. Add your essential oils of choice to a carrier oil and try your luck.

However, not everyone is built for homemade mixtures and DIY salt scrubs. An easier alternative? Find products that include essential oils. Take this recommendation from Iles: “Apply to the scalp area and massage in. Pure oils may deliver greasiness, so it’s better in my opinion to use a tincture like a liquid that resembles a more water-like consistency.”

That’s an easier way to get more elegant formulas without the hassle. Many clean beauty products load up on essential oils for their fragrant and nourishing qualities. This dual benefit makes them easy to spot in some of your soon-to-be favorite hair growth products and treatments.

Other Ingredients That Support Hair Growth

There are two FDA-approved ingredients in prescription and over-the-counter products for hair growth: minoxidil and finasteride. According to Healthline, “Minoxidil is thought to work by partially enlarging hair follicles and lengthening the hair’s growth phase. Finasteride works by decreasing the amount of the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in your body.”

Other growth-boosting ingredients can either be applied to your hair or taken orally through supplements. Biotin is a well-loved ingredient for strengthening hair and nails, as are other favorites like zinc, iron, and collagen. Some popular skincare ingredients you might recognize are also surprisingly good at promoting longer and thicker hair. Think Niacin (as in niacinamide) or caffeine, which energize and brighten your face as much as they do your follicles.

What ingredients damage hair?

People are waking up to the negative effects of ingredients that are often found in low-quality hair products. Sulfates and phthalates are finally getting the bad rap they deserve. But what exactly are they? In short, they’re aggressive chemicals that work to clear away oils, but they don’t discriminate between good oils and bad ones. Therefore, they can be stripping and leave your locks listless in the long run. Not ideal.

Other ingredients to avoid are parabens, synthetic fragrances, and denatured alcohols. Iles also advises being wary of anything that coats the hair shaft with residue: “One needs to be aware of conditioners that overload hair with protein, keratin, and most scientific blends that coat the hair shaft. This causes drastic breakage.”

Luckily, essential oils are good replacements for synthetic fragrances, leaving a pleasant scent without the negative, drying effects. They’re also natural detoxification agents and anti-microbial ingredients, so no need for alcohols or parabens. Are you ready to start incorporating essential oils into your hair? Turn up the volume.

No matter your hair type, everyone can struggle with thinning hair. As someone with afro-textured hair, the first time I straightened it, I expected it to look as thick and full as it did in its natural curls. Reader, it did not. Since then, I’ve learned all the tricks of the trade to get naturally fuller, thicker hair. From extensions to hair thickening serums to rice water treatments and more, I’ve tried it all. But to truly understand the science behind hair volume and density, I sought expert guidance to help me find the best hair thickening products.

I spoke with Devin Graciano, hair stylist and Head of Product Development at Goldie Locks. Graciano enlightened me about the difference between hair density and hair thickness. Density is the number of strands on your head, while thickness is the width of each strand. Collectively, both create the appearance of your hair volume. So, to achieve thicker hair, it’s key to understand your hair type, as well as what’s causing your hair’s thinness.

How to Get Thicker Hair, According to an Expert

Thick or thin strands are the gift of genetics. For naturally thinner hair, giving your hair the nourishment it needs—both inside and out—keeps it healthy and full. If your hair is losing its density, this could be a sign of a few different things. As we get older, slower hair growth is normal and might result in thinning. Some people also experience hair loss from stress, childbirth, or nutritional deficiencies, as well as genetic conditions like alopecia. Or you could just be suffering from a clogged scalp—in which case, add a scalp scrub to your routine to boost circulation. Soon, you should start seeing a fuller head of hair in the mirror.

As we get older, slower hair growth is normal and might result in thinning. Some people also experience hair loss from stress, childbirth, or nutritional deficiencies, as well as genetic conditions like alopecia.

With all these contributing factors to hair loss or thinning, many of us will likely ask ourselves: can you fake it until you make it? When it comes to creating texture and volume, you’re in luck. Read on for Graciano’s insights on the best hair thickening products to give your tresses a more voluminous look.

Is there anything proven to thicken hair?

There have been countless studies made when it comes to thickening hair from hair density (how many hairs on the head) to thickening each strand of hair temporarily. There are DIY methods as well as some promising ingredients to look for when you’re on the hunt for thicker hair.

Ingredients That Can Help Thicken Hair

Ingredients that show a great improvement in hair thickness include:

 • Saw palmetto
 • Rosemary
 • Scutellaria baicalensis
 • Soy
 • Wheat

To increase hair density, you will need to look internally as well as externally to ensure you are addressing anything that could be disrupting your hair growth. Our hair is made up of sulfur, iron, oxygen, hydrogen, and nitrogen so it’s important that we are taking in these minerals that will support new hair growth.

If you are lacking these minerals and are suffering from other ailments like inflammation, poor diet, sleep, and hydration, your hair will reflect that.

Do thickening products damage hair?

I cannot speak for all brands and all ingredients in existence on this one, but generally speaking, no. Hair thickeners generally consist of either hair fibers that attach to the hair or water-soluble polymers that don’t have the ability to overtake your hair’s overall integrity.

How long does it take for a hair thickener to work?

When you are working with preparation or styling products, they usually carry active ingredients that will either attach themselves to the hair creating a film over each strand, or hair thickeners with ingredients similar to hydroxyethylcellulose which only needs a few minutes before it starts working on the hair to help plump each strand.

When looking within from a supplement standpoint, you will want to prepare yourself for a full hair growth cycle (approx. three months) before you start seeing impactful results.

Daily Routines That Can Help Prevent Thinning

Taking a balanced supplement like Goldie Locks Supplements is a great daily routine to help prevent hair from thinning and encourages new hair growth and faster growth overall.

Ensuring that you are maintaining a balanced diet while staying hydrated will really show a difference. In addition to this, managing stress. People often underestimate the negative effects stress takes on our bodies which directly impact hair thinning.

For thickness in hair strands, a method that has been shown to help is a simple scalp massage. Four minutes daily will help increase blood circulation and exercise the tissue along the scalp that has been shown to thicken the hair.

Good hair isn’t just about genetics. Sure, some people are blessed with resilient, glossy, and manageable locks while others of us have to put in a little more effort. But you can fake it until you make it—all it takes is some strategic use of the best hair styling products on the market.

There are an infinite number of hairstyles you can try. Beachy waves, slicked-back buns, and even spontaneously cut bangs à la Emily in Paris all have their place. But agonizing for hours in front of the mirror is not on my 2023 bucket list. Neither is fretting over hairstyles that don’t make it past lunch. We’re all looking for that perfect hair styling product that is both effective and effortless. Luckily, finding it might be easier than you think.

Tips for Healthier, Hydrated Hair in 2023

Wherever your hair journey takes you, there’s one lesson to learn sooner rather than later: play the long game. The secret to good hair is healthy hair. The best hair styling products work hard for your hair in the short- and long term. By choosing products that restore your natural texture, heal damage, and prevent split ends, you’ll find yourself spending less time on your hair for better results.

The second lesson is the cornerstone to hair care and skin care alike: choose products tailored to your needs, not what looks good on the Sephora shelf.

With a nourishing, curated hair care routine in your arsenal, your hair will have that coveted effortless look in no time—whatever your style of choice. Read on to discover the best hair styling products for thick, fine, curly, and straight hair. Oh, and everything in between.

The Best Hair Styling Products

When it comes to the best hair styling products, the answer is simple: whatever works best for your hair type. Pomade, hair wax, mousse, styling cream, and hair masks galore. But choosing the right one is the question.

The holy grails of hair care include anything that feeds your hair as it styles it. Nothing ruins a look more than breakage and product buildup. The best products focus on hydration and nourishment while supporting your hair texture.

For your best hair ever, choose products based on your hair needs and texture. If you have thinner hair, focus on lightweight products that add volume and prevent breakage. If you have thick or curly hair, you need more heavy-duty, hydrating products to prevent dryness while maintaining a firm hold.

The Best Hair Styling Products for Natural Hair

If you have thick, curly 3A-4C hair, finding a styling product that actually works is hard enough. Let alone one that doesn’t make your hair brittle. Sometimes, it’s tempting to go for anything that works and deal with the damage that comes. But trust me: there are unicorn products that hold your hair in place without doing harm in the process.

First, focus on quenching your thirsty strands. Thick, curly hair is prone to dryness. Try curl creams and leave-in sprays that lock in moisture to make your hair easier to style. Then, find products that don’t flake and dry on your hair. Look for smooth, lightweight textures to avoid the dreaded crunch, and don’t leave behind buildup.

The Best Hair Styling Products for Fine Hair

If your hair is hard to style, you might be at a loss with hair products. A lot of products can weigh your hair down, especially if your hair won’t hold a curl without a lot of help.

Opt for mousses and texture sprays to give your hair volume. And while hair oils might be great for your overall hair health, use them lightly when you’re seeking styling success. Hair stylists recommend foams, powdered hair-building fibers, and root-lifting sprays that create the illusion of thicker hair.

The Healthiest Hair Ingredients and Products

When it comes to products that keep our hair its healthiest, it’s important to look for those that nourish and repair your hair structure, making it easier to style it in the long run. Think lightweight natural oils that are full of antioxidants, amino acids, and essential oils to help your hair grow and repair itself.

Some ingredients to look for include:

 • Castor oil
 • Argan Oil
 • Coconut Oil
 • Jojoba Oil
 • Shea Butter
 • Olive Oil
 • Rosemary Oil
 • Hyaluronic Acid

Chemicals and Ingredients to Steer Clear Of

Increasingly, more and more of us are choosing clean shampoos and conditioners to avoid stripping our strands in the shower. We’re also more aware of the dangers of excessive heat styling. Hello, heat protectant and Dyson Airwrap dupes.

But you should take the same care with your hair styling products. Stay clear of chemicals such as:

 • Sodium Lauryl Sulfate
 • Parabens (Propyl, Methyl, and Butyl)
 • Propylene Glycol
 • Formaldehyde
 • Diethanolamine (DEA)
 • Triethanolamine (TEA)

And just like that, another year has flown by. Here we are, in the liminal last weeks of December, staring down 2023 with mixed emotions. Preeminent nostalgia? By the bucketful. Anxiety? A little suspicion? Yes, those too. But mostly, there’s excitement, hope, and the resolve to manifest the best versions of ourselves. Whether you do that by setting resolutions or making a vision board, the new year energy is inescapable. To get a head start on what’s to come in 2023, I asked some experts for their 2023 beauty trend predictions. And boy, did they deliver.

As a beauty writer, I’m always curious about how the new year will look for (and on) me. In pictures, what trends will I embrace—and which will I regret? Will new laugh lines emerge on my face and what skincare will I adopt to prevent them? Will I finally cut bangs or dye my hair the copper shade I’ve been threatening all 2022? Only time—and seasoned beauty industry vets—will tell.

Skin

More Skinimalism

Skinimalism caught mainstream attention this year as the clean look trend spurred a renewed appreciation for barefaced beauty and using fewer but better products. In 2023, this trend will continue, propelled by a sustainability mindset.

“The rise of ‘less but better’ is fueled by our Covid-experience, the challenging economic environment, and growing consciousness about the state of our planet,” says Dr. Conny Wittke, Environmentalist and Co-Founder of Superzero. “In 2023, we will see an increasing ‘new eco’ movement where a minimalistic sustainable approach is preferred over the wasteful consumerism, which lacks style and true character.”

One Step Further Than Sunscreen

With sustainability on the brain and sunscreen slathered from head to toe, 2023 will bring even more ways to protect our skin from environmental damage. UV rays and pollution abound, depleting collagen and diminishing skin elasticity.

“A steady increase in ground-level ozone should emphasize the importance of using products rich in antioxidants,” says Ása Brynjólfsdóttir, Director of R&D of Blue Lagoon. She also notes that “increased heat and humidity calls for more dynamic skincare. Different seasons, climates, and humidity levels will call for a revaluation of skincare needs.”

Skincare as a Ritual

Skincare doesn’t have to be a tedious routine. Like any daily ritual, it should fit your life, your values, and your needs. 2022 introduced skin cycling and cycle syncing, and 2023 will take this further with more intuitive skincare rituals as wellness practices.

According to Giselle Go and Philipe Terrien, co-founders of DAMDAM, “The skin is a living organ, and its concerns shift with seasons, environment, and our internal biology. Rather than a 10-18 (!) step routine, we propose the contrary and keep it minimal with 3-5 steps to let the skin breathe and perform its function.” Rotating your products keeps you in tune with your skin and its needs, rather than mindlessly slapping on serums and hoping for the best.

Lesley Thornton, Holistic Esthetician and Founder of KLUR, adds: “In 2023, I believe beauty practices will be embraced as part of our health and well-being and less as indulgence. Aromatherapy will have a major role in the way we partake in scent, and body care will be more like home spa treatments.”

The Body Care Boom

The body really does keep the score, inside and out. If you’ve noticed your favorite skincare brands toting their new body care lines, you’re not the only one. You’ve got your skincare routine for your face, but what about everything from the neck down? The skinification of body care is here to stay.

“We’ll see more skincare brands taking beneficial actives from their skincare lines and apply it to products for other parts of the body,” says Nina Zilka of Alder New York. “We’ve seen how wonderful certain ingredients are for skin and consumers want to apply those same effects to their hair and body.” 2023 will be the year of thoughtful body care with nourishing ingredients, anti-aging properties, and even buzzy beauty favorites like chemical exfoliants, retinol, and niacinamide.

Frosted Tips Take the 2020S

The nostalgic makeup and fashion looks of the 90s are making a comeback—and hair trends are taking note. Frosted tips are back, but these are not the exaggerated bleach looks you remember. Instead, 2023 will see everyone asking for strategic highlights for an updated “frosted” look.

To get the retro face-framing aesthetic, Nous Haircare’s Tylor Johnson says, “tone down the highlights a shade or two lighter than the client’s base color to create a dimensional monochromatic look.” This bright, hybrid effect works on any hair shade and will be everywhere this winter.

Gemini Hair

Every year, our team waits for the Pinterest Predicts list to check the pulse of the new year’s new vibe. For hair, Pinterest says Gemini Hair will be a top trend. “In 2023, two-toned tresses will take off more than ever. Gen Z and Millennials are behind this rising trend in hair color that mixes natural hues with bright blues, purples, and pinks. Blue and black braids, plus lavender and blonde hair are on the up. Book an appointment with your stylist before it’s too late!

Big Blowouts

Fluffy hair was big, literally, in 2022. The muse: Matilda Djerf. The tool: the Dyson Airwrap. While the 70s-inspired curtain bangs dominated our feeds this year, sweep those bangs from your face and embrace the 90s with big blowouts in 2023. With new tools and technology, you don’t have to save your blowouts for special occasions and salon trips. When it comes to styling, unleash your hair from those slick buns and embrace vintage-inspired volume in 2023.

Don’t Skimp on Scalp Care

Rinse, repeat… but don’t forget your scalp. A clean scalp means long healthy hair. While we’ve seen scalp serums emerge into the hair care scene, a complete scalp treatment routine is coming soon to your shelves in 2023.

“Scalp care is essential for overall hair health, and while people tend to focus on scalp treatments, the shampoos we use every day are essential for scalp health,” says Dr. Conny Wittke. “Hair can appear limp and lifeless or become overly greasy due to buildup on the scalp from hair care products, environmental factors, or minerals and chlorine from hard water or pool water. Regular removal of such buildup, with a clarifying shampoo, is important for healthy-looking hair, airy bounce, restored shine, and for styling and coloring products to work effectively.”

#Barbiecore

Every year, a bold color trend emerges for only the most daring among us to try. Be it platinum blonde, copper orange, or a light lavender, playful hues go in and out of style like everything else. 2023’s bold color: bright, Barbie pink. Barbiecore was the year’s hottest TikTok fashion trend, and Pantone’s color of the year is Viva Magenta. Embrace the Gen Z-approved hue with this hot hair color—if you dare.

Jamie Mazzei, creative director for NuBest Salon & Spa in Manhasset, NY, one of the largest salons in the country, says: “If you’re looking for something a bit more daring and bright, try the #Barbiecore trend. Decide which side of the pink spectrum you want to be on, and then ask your colorist to match your preferred pink. If you have blond hair, it’s a simple process adding a gorgeous pink hue. If you have darker hair and you want the pink to pop, your stylist may need to bleach your hair first.”

Makeup

Lots of Liner

Soft goth, indie sleaze, and grunge girl—oh my! These throwback aesthetics all have one thing in common: dark eyeliner—and lots of it (preferably smudged). And it’s coming back in 2023. Put together the 90s/Y2K revivals and the reign of effortless beauty, and here you have it: a look that’s dramatic, but also looks like you just rolled out of bed.

I saw an Alexa Chung interview once in the heyday of “I’m with the band” rocker-chic in which she described her unconventional morning makeup routine: smudging her day-old eyeliner around her eyes. While I’d never advocate for sleeping in your makeup, the aesthetic is one I will be personally indulging in. So charcoal your eyes with vigor. Godspeed.

Unnatural Glow

Yes, everybody will still want that lit-from-within glow in 2023—but with a Y2K twist. Pinterest predicts that rave culture is making a comeback, so naturally, its influence will trickle down into beauty. Grab your glitter. Anything that sparkles and shimmers is in for 2023. Take highlighter one step further and illuminate your look with gemstones and glitter around your eyes, on your cheeks, or even around your lips. Your main sources of inspo will be disco, Euphoria, and the roaring 20s. Anything that would have guaranteed your entry into Studio 54.

Skin-Supporting Makeup

Multi-use makeup is in. I’m talking skin tints that triple as a vitamin C serum and an SPF. Lip and cheek balms fortified with hyaluronic acid. Anything that can be used multiple times in your routine, and blurs the line between skincare and makeup. Yes, you should still apply a generous amount of sunscreen before you put on your face. But an eyeshadow with UV-blocking properties doesn’t hurt. Get ready for everything you put on your skin to support your skincare efforts rather than sabotaging them.

No matter your hair type or texture, there are a few universal truths in hair care: rinse and repeat, don’t wet your hair for at least 24 hours post-perm, and, for some reason, your hair never looks as good in the winter. But it’s not just you. Winter is hard on hair (and often leads to dry, damaged locks). Your hair lays flatter, your styles don’t last as long, and your strands are prone to breakage. But there’s hope to revitalize your tired tresses. By learning a few tried and true winter hair care tips, you can expect plenty of good hair days come 2023.

The Skinny on Dry Winter Hair

There’s a reason your hair is harder to style in the winter. It’s in the air, says Boris Oak, clean beauty expert and founder of EVOLVh. “Cooler weather is typically drier weather, compounded with indoor heat, which is also typically dry.”

Dry air equals dry hair. And dry hair is impossible to manage—but not impossible to fix. Hydration is the key to everything: glowing skin, a healthy body, and shiny, healthy hair. While upping your winter water intake and taking hair vitamins can go a long way, some of the best winter hair care tips recommend just a few topical switches. Investing in a good shampoo and conditioner, a hair oil, and a hydrating hair mask might be all it takes to counteract winter dryness.

I spoke with Oak to get his hair secrets and to discover the best winter hair care tips for healthy strands all year long.

How Winter Weather Affects Hair Health

Dry air and colder temperatures aren’t just red flags for your hair health—dry hair is a styling nightmare. “Drier hair is dull, it doesn’t hold its shape well, and it overall looks lackluster,” says Oak. “Dry hair is also more prone to damage as the hair becomes more brittle. That can lead to additional split ends or additional damage to hair when you combine the use of heated styling products with dry hair.”

Should we swap out our hair care products in the winter?

To prevent damaged and “lackluster” locks, Oak recommends taking your hair hydration seriously. Hydration is essential for your entire body, inside and out. Hydrating products are must-haves in your routine. Especially for winter hair care.

“If you are not using products designed to hydrate your hair, the winter marks a good time to swap out your shampoo, conditioner, and styling products to ones that will provide an additional boost of moisture to account for harsher environmental conditions.”

Your shampoos might be sabotaging you. If you’re not using the right ingredients, you’ll fall victim to a bad case of dry winter woes. Oak recommends:

 • Natural oils like sunflower, rosehip, sweet almond, and kiwi seed oil to add moisture.
 • Humectants, ingredients that draw moisture in from the air to boost hydration.

And no matter the season, Oak also suggests avoiding:

 • Any products with alcohol, which further dry out hair.
 • Ingredients like parabens, sulfates, phthalates, panthenol, and synthetic fragrances.

Does hair oiling work?

If you’ve never tried hair oiling, then you’ve likely come across it on the internet. It even became a TikTok trend for a while, but as we know, these can be hit or miss. Turns out though, hair oiling could be the cure to dry winter strands.

According to Oak, “there is research from the last decade that shows the benefits of hair oiling. Its history dates back thousands of years.” But the question remains: should everyone try it?

“Hair oiling is the process of applying an oil to the scalp and roots and massaging them down the hair shaft or simply applying oils to the tips of the hair to prevent split ends,” explains Oak. “Hair oiling is safe for most people, but if you have eczema, excess dandruff, or any other skin condition, you want to speak with your dermatologist to determine if hair oiling is appropriate.”

Try scalp serums if you’re nervous to try a full oiling routine. Combine this practice with scalp massages for the complete Ayurvedic treatment.

Winter Hair Care Tips: It All Starts With the Scalp

Scalp care is key when you’re trying to maintain healthy, hydrated hair. To keep it from drying out, Oak shares the following winter hair care tips:

 • Keep your hair protected anytime you go outside, with a hat, hood, or scarf.
 • At home, when you shower or bathe, do so in warm (not hot) water. Hot water can strip your scalp of natural oils essential for scalp health.
 • Try to scale back the number of times you wash your hair each week. Even just one less time per week can help keep some of the natural oil in your hair to help with moisture.
 • Incorporate a scalp oil into your routine that is formulated with antioxidants, ceramides, and natural extracts to stimulate hair follicles for the appearance of thicker, fuller hair, soothes the scalp, and protects hair from breakage.

And because hat hair is often a concern in the winter, Oak has a few words of wisdom to share. “Dry your hair entirely before wearing a hat, so that your hair doesn’t take on the shape of your hat while it dries,” says Oak. “Remove your hat as soon as possible. Use products that will help boost the health of your hair so it withstands the friction from your hat each day.”

Tips for Fighting Frizz and Static

“Static is notorious in the winter due to the lack of humidity in the air, which increases the static electricity in the air. You can combat static and frizz by using a moisturizing shampoo when you wash your hair and a moisturizing conditioner every time you wet your hair.”

Try silk accessories like silk scrunchies, pillows, and head wraps to reduce friction while you sleep.

For extra protection, Oak recommends using “a hair mask once a week, or every other week, to help boost hydration and hair health. Leave-in conditioners are also great options if you don’t have time for a hair mask but want an extra boost.”

The Good, the Bad, and the Slightly Concerning—Beauty Experts Weigh In on 2022’s Biggest Trends https://camillestyles.com/beauty/2022-beauty-trends/ Mon, 12 Dec 2022 12:30:00 +0000 https://camillestyles.com/?p=212633

And what they'll keep for 2023.

The post The Good, the Bad, and the Slightly Concerning—Beauty Experts Weigh In on 2022’s Biggest Trends appeared first on Camille Styles.

]]>

The year 2022 brought us some particularly funky-sounding beauty trends. But despite my visceral aversion to the name “moisture sandwich,” the concept itself is solid. With a rebrand (literally any other name), the method should live on in the New Year (and has been around forever anyway), but not every BeautyTok trend should stick around.

To get a sense of the good, the bad, and the too weird to worry about, I tapped a stable of beauty experts for their end-of-the-year takes on 2022 skincare, makeup, and hair trends.

Skincare Trends

Skin Cycling

I love that we are talking more about skin cycling. It has been around for many years, but the catchy name and TikTok endorsement have put it at the forefront of beauty trends, and it is actually good for your skin. Remember this: treatment steps like AHAs, BHA, and retinol activate your skin and make it work. Just like if you pull a muscle and need to skip working out, sometimes your skin is not up for the task, and you need to let it rest. Asking it to do more will only lead to irritation and unwanted results. Learn to know when your skin is ready for a workout and when it’s not. — Dr. Heather D. Rogers, Founder and CEO of Doctor Rogers Skin Care

Moisturizing Ingredients

I have been loving how popular ceramides and niacinamides have been this year. I think they are great ingredients to have in your arsenal, especially if your skin tends to be sensitive. — Joanna Vargas, Celebrity Facialist, Founder of Joanna Vargas Salons and Skincare

Slugging

Is it necessary for everyone or all the time? Absolutely not, but for those with super dry or inflamed skin, applying a thicker occlusive on the skin really helps to speed up healing and prevent water loss. — LA-Based Esthetician, Matthew Miller

Subtle Lip Filler

I’m also excited about the movement toward beautiful subtle lip filler and the move away from big formless sausage lips. It’s all about finding someone with a light hand and understanding the underlying anatomy of the lips who can select the right injectable for you. — Dr. Heather D. Rogers, Founder and CEO of Doctor Rogers Skin Care

More Love for Natural-Looking Lips

I am loving the shift from the Kylie Jenner lip to “your lips but better” lips. I am happy that patients are no longer asking to be overfilled. The new lip fillers and injection techniques that have emerged onto the scene yield much more natural, soft, and defined lips. — SkinSpirit Aesthetic Nurse Practitioner Hillary Mills

Tried-and-True (and Googled)

Of the most googled beauty ingredients in 2022, I am happy that HA, hyaluronic acid, and vitamin A/retinols were also a top trend. — Dr. Shirley Madhère, MD, New York-based holistic plastic surgeon and Founder of Holistic Plastic Surgery and Jet Set Beauty RX

A Big Year for Daily SPF

The movement toward the daily application of sunscreen made huge progress this year. Everyone is talking about what an essential step it is against the onslaught of aging, and they are right! 90% of aging comes from the sun, so why not stop that from happening in the first place? — Dr. Heather D. Rogers, Founder and CEO of Doctor Rogers Skin Care

PRP as a Filler Alternative

PRP, or Platelet Rich Plasma, is a great alternative to filler and is also great to combine with skin treatments. It entails drawing blood, spinning it in a centrifuge to separate its components, and then injected into the skin or used on top of the skin using a plethora of modalities. These procedures help improve the formation of collagen and elastin and are full of important growth factors, which give your skin an amazing boost. — Salt Lake City-Based SkinSpirit Aesthetic Nurse Practitioner Mindy Simpson

And glitter! I’ve been known to wear both to workouts and soccer practices. — Casey Georgeson, Founder and CEO of Saint Jane Beauty

Hair Trends

“Expensive Brunette”

Hailey Bieber really inspired so many people to go darker with their hair color, going the Expensive Brunette route which felt so modern and fresh. — Jason Lee, Hairstylist, Colorist, and Founder of Mela & Kera

The “Skinification” of Hair

It’s been my philosophy as a hairstylist throughout my career. There’s unfortunately been a significant increase in the amount of hair breakage and premature hair loss, but the consumer has become increasingly educated and aware of the ingredients in their hair care. Many of our new customers have turned to Iles Formula as it’s made using raw, sustainably sourced ingredients, often found in skincare. — Wendy Iles, Celebrity Hairstylist and Founder of Iles Formula

Layers

I loved seeing layers make a strong return with shags and ‘mullet-silhouettes’ in all hair textures signaling the return of the ‘haircut’ which had gone silent for so many years. We haven’t been this adventurous with haircuts since the 90s. — Jason Lee, Hairstylist, Colorist, and Founder of Mela & Kera

The Most Baffling Beauty Trends of 2022

Skincare Trends

DIY Skincare

Anything you see on TikTok that uses household or other beauty products that are not intentionally formulated for skin—like using deodorant as a primer, using glue to remove blackheads, using toothpaste to treat zits, or using hairspray to set makeup. Household items are not recommended for skin care because they are not manufactured for that purpose.

When you DIY your skin care, you open yourself up to allergic reactions and rebound effects that exacerbate the issue you are trying to address. Toothpaste will strip your skin, the glue will destroy its barrier, salt and sugar scrubs will create microtears, and hairspray or coconut oil will lead to congestion and breakouts.

I urge everyone to stop taking skin care advice from people with no skin or health background. You wouldn’t ask a person without children for parenting advice; why would you trust a random person regarding your health? — Medical esthetician Candace Marino, aka The LA Facialist

More DIY Skincare…

Let’s get rid of home remedy skincare. One huge trend has been Aspirin for acne—people are taking Aspirin at home, crushing them up, and placing the powder/paste on their blemishes. If you were to talk to a dermatologist about this trend, they would jump at the chance to tell you that is not helpful and can actually harm or damage the skin. Consider meeting with a professional skincare expert for science-backed treatment options for acne! — Salt Lake City-based SkinSpirit Aesthetic Nurse Practitioner Mindy Simpson

Pore Vacuuming

Although this viral trend has proven to be oddly satisfying to some, at-home pore vacuuming devices are not necessarily effective and can actually do more harm than good. They can damage the outermost layer leaving skin inflamed and dehydrated. You might even break out more as a result! Instead, opt for a well-balanced chemical exfoliant that also contains anti-inflammatory ingredients, such as the Tête-À-Tête PhytoPeel Resurfacing Mask and PhytoTrilology Booster. — Kira Vidergauz and Dr. Sharon Hirschowitz, co-founders of Tête-À-Tête

Snail Mucin

It’s not that snail mucin is bad for the skin, it just seems super gimmicky. Especially when you have humectants like glycerin that are just as good—and without possibly stressing out an animal for the ingredient. — LA-Based Esthetician, Matthew Miller

The “Tinkle” Razor

AKA at-home dermaplaning. Please leave that to the professionals. I’ve seen too many people bruise, cut, and even give themselves infections! — Kasey Boone, Los Angeles esthetician and founder of Glow Skincare

Caterpillar Eyelashes

Enough said. — Rea Ann Silva, Creator and CEO of Beautyblender

Fox Brows

I am not a fan personally of the “fox brow” lift à la Bella Hadid. I feel it looks tight, pulled, and very unnatural. For clients who are looking for a lift, I prefer using Botox for a subtle improvement.SkinSpirit Aesthetic Nurse Practitioner Hillary Mills

Unnecessary Merch

It felt like every beauty brand launched some kind of limited edition merch this year… hopefully in 2023, more brands will start thinking about the environmental impact of unneeded merch. — Rosie Jane Johnston, founder of By/Rosie Jane

Hair Trends

The “Wolf Cut”

My 11-year-old daughter asked for one, and I realized I still have PTSD from when my Mom gave me bangs in the 5th grade. Oh, and brow lamination… I can’t get on board. — Casey Georgeson, Founder and CEO of Saint Jane Beauty

The “Octopus Cut”

I never really got into the term “Octopus haircut.” I’m all for a 90s influence but this trend is one that I’m okay to let go of. I just feel like shags and mullets are strong iconic silhouettes that are definitive throwbacks and were haircuts that became legendary. The Octopus haircut just doesn’t hold up in comparison. — Jason Lee, Hairstylist, Colorist, and Founder of Mela & Kera

Baby Bangs

I mean, I wish I could pull bangs off in general, but I feel like it is very few that can rock a baby bang and make it look awesome. I’m hoping that regular, face-framing bangs come back. — Salt Lake City-based SkinSpirit Aesthetic Nurse Practitioner Mindy Simpson

Strawberry Blonde

Strawberry copper tones have had their moment as we head into rich mocha brown earth tones. — Trace Henningsen, Celebrity Hairstylist and Leonor Greyl Ambassador

Bleached Brows

Having a background in makeup, I love a strong brow. Brows frame the face and without them, things can look off. Also, it just scares me to mess with the brows. Once injured, brows don’t easily grow back. All of us who overplucked in high school probably know this. Bleaching and unnecessarily damaging those precious brows need to go. — Salt Lake City-Based SkinSpirit Aesthetic Nurse Practitioner Mindy Simpson

Vivid Tones

I’m so over block color and contrasting vivid tones. For clients who aren’t willing to do the maintenance and upkeep, the hair is more prone to damage, breakage, and dulling. Wearing this type of hair color technique, as it was seen on young popstars this year, really detracts from someone’s natural beauty and it’s super expensive to create, let alone refresh. My goal is always to enhance and accentuate the quality and shine of everyone’s locks, and these looks can turn into a total disaster. — Min Kim, L’Oréal Professionnel Global Ambassador

The 2022 Beauty Trends to Stick With Into 2023

Skincare Trends

Slugging

I think slugging will remain, but I recommend an elevated slugging experience using skin care products with good ingredients for maximum impact on the skin. The Vaseline has got to go! I recommend a balm packed with anti-inflammatory ingredients, antioxidants, and vitamins like Furtuna Skin’s Replenishing Balm, which has potent medicinal plants that calm, soothe, protect the skin, and aid in healing. — Medical esthetician Candace Marino, aka The LA Facialist

Glass Skin

Glass skin is a result of a balanced skincare routine. I personally will always choose a dewy look over matte. — LA-Based Esthetician, Matthew Miller

Ageless Beauty

I think in 2023 we will see more beauty brands embracing authenticity by celebrating real people in marketing campaigns that include Gen X. I think trends like ageless beauty and Botox-free beauty will have a big moment in the New Year. — Rosie Jane Johnston, Founder of By/Rosie Jane

Facial Bars

The trend of sustainability and mindful packaging will continue to bring cleansing bars to the forefront as the modern version of the traditional bar serves some great ingredients without the waste. — Joanna Vargas, Celebrity Facialist, Founder of Joanna Vargas Salons and Skincare

An Inside/Out Glow

The inside/outside connection between skin health and gut health will also continue to be important in how we look after ourselves this year. Our gut microbiome continues to be crucial as it rules over our immunity, sensitivity, and general wellness. We will see more supplements and probiotic smoothies in the new year. — Joanna Vargas, Celebrity Facialist, Founder of Joanna Vargas Salons and Skincare

Fight the Filter

I believe that there is a time and a place for plastic surgery, but the societal standards we have developed for women’s bodies have become increasingly more unnatural and impossible for the average woman to attain. I love seeing women speak up about these issues and promote healthy realistic body imagery in advertising across the industry and think this is a welcome change that is here to stay! — SkinSpirit Aesthetic Nurse Practitioner Hillary Mills

Bakuchiol

It’s such a unique ingredient in that it has a similar gene expression to retinol. It performs by reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and evens skin tone without the unpleasant side effects you so often see with retinol, like redness, flaking, and irritation. — Kira Vidergauz and Dr. Sharon Hirschowitz, Co-Founders of Tête-À-Tête

Gua Sha

For the face and body. These holistic and ancient practices have been around for thousands of years for a reason. Kasey Boone, Los Angeles Esthetician and Founder of Glow Skincare

Elevated Natural Makeup

I think the super natural Glossier look is a little tired and people are looking to get more creative with their makeup. So a lip oil, but with a heavy lipliner. Matte eyeshadow but with a thick cat eye. Soft and pretty but with an edge. — Cyndi Ramirez Fulton, CEO and Founder of Chillhouse

Lip Oils

People are obsessed with them for good reason. They’re nourishing and hydrating, and if formulated right, they drench your lips in omegas, vitamins, and antioxidants. — Casey Georgeson, Founder and CEO of Saint Jane Beauty

Radiance

Radiance is no longer seasonal. It’s important to have a healthy glow all year round. — Rea Ann Silva, Creator and CEO of Beautyblender

90s Monochrome Makeup Looks

I don’t see this trend going away anytime soon. This slightly grungy, slightly classy trend looks good on pretty much everyone and is easy to do for those that are not makeup-inclined. Take a deep brown from the eye down the contour and to the lips for a stunning look on top of your already glowy skin. — Salt Lake City-based SkinSpirit Aesthetic Nurse Practitioner Mindy Simpson

The Side Part

I’m personally excited to see the side part make a comeback in the hair category since that’s been my style since the 7th grade. — Casey Georgeson, Founder and CEO of Saint Jane Beauty

Big, Bouncy Hair

I think butterfly hair, bouncy blowouts, and #healthyhair will stick. It’s about color, styles, and cuts that promote nourished, well-looked-after hair. Hair growth serums and ingestible will continue to remain an important part of our haircare routine in an effort to get the biggest and best blowout of the year. — Tara Simich, Founder and CEO of Mermade Hair

Big Blowouts, With a Modern Twist

The new version of the big blowout is based on nurtured hair—softer and more voluminous without any stiffness. Most traditional styling products result in sticky and stiff hair, which is not what this look is about. Nurtured hair is the way forward. — Wendy Iles, Celebrity Hairstylist and Founder of Iles Formula

Scalp Health

This will always be the priority for our hair. We may follow trends, but healthy hair never goes out of style. Trace Henningsen, Celebrity Hairstylist and Leonor Greyl Ambassador

Organic Hair

We can thank Gen Z for this cool progression where we will see hair being less put together and it will feel just very organic. Gone are the days of a shameful side part, now we are living in a Gen Z world where we get to be confident with our looks and inspiration for 2023 while keeping it minimal, cool and effortless. — Jason Lee, Hairstylist, Colorist, and Founder of Mela & Kera

Glowing Hair

Natural, muted, sun-mimicking, classic, shiny, moisturized hair is in forever. — Min Kim, L’Oréal Professionnel Global Ambassador

I imagine there are people who immediately regret sharing their profession at parties. A psychiatrist or a doctor could quickly get cornered and barraged with questions. For me though, it’s hairstylists. Once the word is out there’s a professional stylist in the building, I can’t help myself. What’s hairdryer should I be using? Has anyone ever cried after a cut? Do *you* think I can pull off bangs? It’s this aggressive line of vain questioning that led me to pump one poor stylist—at a children’s soccer game of all places—for the best hairbrushes to buy right now.

“It all comes down to the bristles,” he shared, slowly inching away from me.

Then, a 5-year-old kicked the ball into the opposing team’s goal, people cheered because it was still pretty cute, and the conversational thread was lost. But my query remained: what are the absolute best brushes for every hair scenario?

Fortunately, being a beauty editor allows me to follow up with other professional hair stylists, like Wendy Iles. I’ve also been able to comb through our own mane-centric stories to discover a go-to brush and bristle for every hair type and scenario.

Ahead, discover all the pro-approved best hairbrushes for your thickest, glossiest strands and most delicate situations.

The Best Brush for Blow Drying: Olivier Garden

Regardless of hair type, celebrity stylist Wendy Iles (founder of Iles Formula) swears by Olivier Garden’s ionic round brushes, which feature ergonomic handles and vented ceramic barrels for quicker and more consistent styling.

Kathleen Riley, founder of Shae Hair, swears by Denman’s boar bristle brush for reducing frizz and adding a super sleek shine. “I love using it to brush out curls and form them into waves,” Riley adds.

The Best Brush for Tangles: Sheila Stotts

After ocean-filled summer days and lots of temporary hair dye, my partner’s daughter’s fine, long hair had morphed into a bit of a bird’s nest. So I turned to bicoastal stylist Ricky Mota‘s expert advice: the Sheila Stotts brush (AKA the “removal brush”). “This tool detangles and styles hair without pulling or breaking it,” Mota shared with me previously.

With its gentle metal bristles, it tackled her tangles as nothing else had. It wasn’t quite like a hot knife through butter, but it wasn’t too far off.

The Best Brush for Wet Hair and Tender Heads: The Wet Brush

Ah, the Wet Brush. By now, most know about this magical, shower-friendly wonder. But it doesn’t get nearly the recognition it deserves for being a great all-around brush, especially for those with fine hair. Its ultrasoft IntelliFlex bristles help prevent breakage and keep hair healthy.

The Best Wide-Toothed Comb: Crown Affair’s The Comb No. 001

Cindy Crawford’s longtime hairdresser Richard Martin swears by this plant-based beauty.

“Consider your hair as your favorite t-shirt—the one you carefully hand wash and air dry because you don’t want it to shrink or stretch,” advised Marin. “Your hair is very malleable when wet and can be easily ripped or torn if not handled properly. I like to use a very wide tooth comb and I start from the ends of the hair and work my way up to the scalp ending with an overall smooth stroke to the entire head, from scalp to ends. This drastically minimizes tearing or stretching of the hair.”

Your Hair Deserves Winterproofing, Too—Here’s How to Get Ahead of Harsh Temps https://camillestyles.com/beauty/hair/winter-hair-care/ Tue, 08 Nov 2022 11:30:00 +0000 https://camillestyles.com/?p=207466

Lock in the good stuff.

The post Your Hair Deserves Winterproofing, Too—Here’s How to Get Ahead of Harsh Temps appeared first on Camille Styles.

]]>

We winterproof all kinds of things when the weather gets chilly—our homes, our cars, even our go-to puffy coat. Why shouldn’t we give the same preemptive care to another highly important asset? This season, I’ve vowed to get ahead of whatever Mother Nature and Father Winter have in mind for my mane, and tapped two pros for a winter hair care guide.

Ahead, L’Oréal Professionnel Global Ambassador Min Kim and celebrity stylist Wendy Iles (founder of Iles Formula), break down everything you need to know about safeguarding your curly, fine, and chemically-treated locks during the harsh winter months.

How do cool winter temperatures affect our hair?

Ultimately it’s a one-two combo: cold, dry temperatures paired with heating systems dehydrate our hair and scalp, causing damage (and the dreaded static-induced frizz) to the hair’s cuticle. (“That’s the protective layer of the hair,” Kim adds.)

“It’s something that affects all scalp types and certainly fine, thin hair the most,” Iles notes.

What daily beauty habits help protect your hair from the cold?

Shampoo and conditioners are foundational to our hair care routine—and are key when it comes to fortifying strands and locking in moisture during chilly winter months. Hydration is key, but even more vital may be what’s not included in the combo.

“Switch to a perfectly pH-balanced silicone- and sulfate-free shampoo,” Iles explains. “Sulfates are detergents that strip and dry out the hair and scalp whilst silicones weigh hair down.”

The celebrity stylist also recommends a protective serum for your winter hair care routine to act as a leave-in conditioner and prevent breakage.

“Regular haircuts are great for hair health and maintenance,” shares Kim. “It’s important to remove damaged, dry or brittle ends to maintain the health of the hair and promote hair growth and overall health.”

How can you make heat styling less detrimental to winter hair?

The colder months usher in one of the biggest party seasons of the year (the holidays), making it tough to refrain from blow dryers and heat styling. Fortunately, a solid finishing serum, like the aforementioned Iles option, or a steam-powered styler helps protect hair cuticles.

L’Oreal Professionnel Steampod

Do scarves or hats protect hair in the winter?

They certainly don’t hurt, but it all depends on the material.

“Soft materials like silk, satin, and cashmere can protect hair from the elements, which will protect hair from damage or losing moisture over time,” Kim explains. “If previously damaged, dry, or brittle hair is continuously rubbing up against rougher materials, like wool or cotton, either at the nape or at the ends, it could cause breakage over time.”

Can You Grow Naturally Thicker Brows? An Expert Says—It’s Possible https://camillestyles.com/beauty/how-to-get-thicker-eyebrows/ Mon, 24 Oct 2022 11:00:00 +0000 https://camillestyles.com/?p=205727

Embrace the natural.

The post Can You Grow Naturally Thicker Brows? An Expert Says—It’s Possible appeared first on Camille Styles.

]]>

Every morning, I give thanks to the beauty gods for blessing us with the thick eyebrow trend. I also give thanks to my own brows for surviving the over-plucked, pencil-thin standard of the early 2000s. Even so, I can’t help but want more for a feature that could completely change the look of my face. To learn how to get thicker eyebrows, I tapped Landy Dean, makeup and eyebrow artist at Mark Ryan Salon.

We wanted to tackle the question from two angles: natural tips for growing thicker, bolder brows, and tools or hair growth products that can accentuate the crucial feature. Ahead, discover tried-and-true tips for how to get thicker eyebrows for an effortless, natural look.

Landy Dean

 • Makeup Artist and Beauty Expert
 • Instagram

A world-renowned makeup artist, eyebrow expert and established beauty expert by Allure magazine, Landy Dean takes great pride in his work and draws on his colorful journey for inspiration. His looks have appeared on the pages of premier magazines, including the covers of Cosmopolitan and Harper’s Bazaar.

What are easy things you can every day to support your natural brows?

Apart from gently brushing strands upwards daily with a spoolie brush, simply extending your typical skincare routine to your brow area (which is often overlooked) is a lovely way to support eyebrow growth. If you want to accelerate things even further, consider paying extra attention to exfoliating the area.

“Pairing exfoliation with a brow conditioner or growth formula helps a great deal if you are regrowing over-tweezed brows or coming back from eyebrow hair loss due to specific events such as chemotherapy,” Dean adds.

And of course, when you feel the relatable urge to overpluck, just put down the tweezers. Even overdoing it with professional waxing or threading can keep brows from growing into their natural arch. Fortunately, we’re in our bushy brow era, so the occasional wild hair follicle or two shouldn’t be a problem.

What natural remedies can help with eyebrow growth?

Before throwing down $100-plus on a formulated treatment (and well before you turn to microblading), consider testing a few hydrating home remedies you might have already on hand. A few popular options include olive oil, coconut oil, tea tree oil, and lavender oil (though the last option should probably be preceded by a patch test, since it could cause irritation). Dean has also had several clients report luck with castor oil, which contains vitamin E and fatty acids.

Simply take a small amount, rub or massage into the brows, and leave on overnight on a daily basis. (Consistency is key.) There isn’t much scientific data to back up the hair growth bonafides of most essential oils or other natural remedies, but a little extra love lavished on the brows couldn’t hurt.

What are the best hair growth serums?

Ready to speed things up? Consider a nutrient-rich hair growth serum. Below are some of the best you can buy. Though Dean does caution, “There are several brow growth formulas on the market—it can be trial and error finding the right product that works with your skin chemistry.”

Every product is curated with care by our editors. If you buy something through our links, we may earn a small commission at no cost to you.

Experts Reveal: The Best Tips and Products for a Low-Maintenance Wash Day Routine https://camillestyles.com/beauty/low-maintenance-wash-day/ Thu, 20 Oct 2022 09:45:00 +0000 https://camillestyles.com/?p=205366

Wash and go.

The post Experts Reveal: The Best Tips and Products for a Low-Maintenance Wash Day Routine appeared first on Camille Styles.

]]>

The literary loss of innocence in my young life came in realizing that a “wash and go” was nowhere near as simple as it sounded. Turns out, you don’t just wash your hair and go. You wrestle with a brush and combs as you work multiple products through your hair. Then, you try to style it in a way that holds moisture and doesn’t damage your strands. Phew. My arms hurt just thinking about it. No wonder curly-haired women everywhere are turning to a more low maintenance wash day routine.

Caring for your natural hair doesn’t have to be a hassle. For a long time, I would dread wash days when I was between protective styles. But neglecting my hair needs just led to dryness. And over-straightening my afro led to breakage. But there’s hope for anyone looking to simplify their routine without compromising their natural texture. Yes, a nourishing and effective low maintenance wash day is possible.

The First Rule: Less Is More

To untangle the secrets of a simple wash day regimen, I looked to some of my favorite natural hair experts. First, I spoke to Jamila Powell, the founder of both the clean hair brand Naturally Drenched, and the Maggie Rose Salon in Columbus, OH, one of the top texture salons in the country. Cassandra Olivia, a luxury hair stylist and colorist, shared her insights as well.

It can seem impossible to keep all the necessary wash day products straight. Deep conditioning masks and leave-in conditioners, wide-tooth combs and detangling brushes, styling products, and natural oils—oh my! But both the experts I spoke to emphasize a simple approach. You don’t have to do a lot to keep your hair healthy and encourage hair growth.

“Choose products that will not only add moisture but will help with the structural integrity of the hair from within,” Olivia told me. Read on to discover the best hair products and tricks of the trade for your low maintenance wash day routine.

What should a low maintenance wash day look like?

A wash day routine should be personal. To break from a high-maintenance routine, you need to be intentional. According to Olivia, a minimal routine starts before you even change your product rotation. “Use products specifically designed for curly hair,” she says. “Don’t use styling tools with heat daily. Don’t over-shampoo.”

With these golden rules in mind, you can begin crafting a low maintenance wash day routine that nourishes your natural hair without taking up your whole Sunday.

What products should be included in a hair care routine?

According to Powell, even a minimal wash routine should include:

 • A clarifying shampoo used monthly to remove build-up
 • A great shampoo and conditioner
 • A styling foam with a light hold
 • A gel with the desired hold
 • A lightweight oil to help break the cast

Choose products that focus on hydration. “Curly/textured hair wants moisture,” says Olivia. “So you want to ensure that all products you use, from shampoo to conditioner to styling products, will add moisture to the hair.”

woman looking at phone

How can I make my wash days last longer?

Powell says low maintenance is the way to go. To keep your hair fresh between washes, it’s best to do as little as possible.

“The best thing to do is leave it alone and try not to alter it, get it wet, or apply more product, if you are reapplying product, it is going to add build-up,” says Powell. “If your hair is feeling dry or getting tangles, that’s a sign to wash your hair and style it again. But if you need to do a touch-up on curls, you can use a styling foam or gel to get your curls back.”

To make the most out of your wash day, choose products that add moisture and nutrients to your hair while clearing build-up and minimizing future care. Try sleeping in a silk bonnet or using silk pillowcases to retain moisture.

“Always remember,” says Powell, “your hair will get bigger as the days go by!”

Tips and Tricks for Preventing Build-Up

Keeping your hair clear is half the trouble of keeping it clean. Low maintenance doesn’t mean letting product build up. Instead, there are simple tips and tricks that can keep your wash day easy and effective.

“Incorporate a clarifying shampoo into your wash day routine,” says Powell. Detoxing once or twice a month can be major for your hair. “Apply a pre-conditioning treatment to provide your hair with extra nutrients to restore your hair’s pH and ensure hydration and shine.”

But it’s not just what you put in your hair, it’s how you put it into your hair.

I don’t know about you, but my TikTok is full of unconventional hair care hacks. Washing one side first, using shampoo and conditioner backward, or investing in an at-home steamer. Powell helped me untangle the good advice from the bad.

“Apply your hair products an inch away from your scalp to help reduce scalp build-up,” she said. “When you are doing a wash-and-go, use a hooded dryer or diffuser to help dry your hair before breaking the cast, then go in with a lightweight oil to lock in moisture and make sure the cast is completely gone.”

Reap the benefits of this ancient beauty ritual.

The post Apparently, Rice Water Can Make Your Hair Grow 3 Inches in a Month—Here’s What You Need to Know appeared first on Camille Styles.

]]>

In April 2020, Kourtney Kardashian took to her lifestyle blog Poosh to share the secret to Kim Kardashian’s thick, shiny hair: rice water treatments. From there, the practice—an ancient beauty ritual that dates back to the Heian Period in Japan—went viral on social media. “Rice water for hair growth” currently has 106.2 million views on TikTok, while an Instagram search for the #ricewater hashtag brings up nearly 60,000 posts filled with luscious locks.

And though the treatment is still just gaining traction in the U.S., many parts of the world, including China and Southeast Asia, have long been reaping the benefits of rice water for hair.

A Few Rice Water Basics

 • When rice is cooked or left to soak, the leftover water becomes a starchy substance that may be able to soothe hair, make it shinier, and help it grow faster.
 • The starchiness of the treatment coats your locks with protein to strengthen strands and add shine.
 • Rice is rich with folate (a powerful B vitamin), amino acids, antioxidants, and trace minerals like zinc and magnesium, all of which can help treat the scalp and give thirsty, brittle hair a healthy boost.
 • Rice water may help smooth and detangle hair.

Healthier hair could also lead to stunning growth. “Hairfluencer” Anisa Sojka claims that treating her enviable hair with rice water once a week caused it to grow three inches in just one month.

With such simple ingredients—the recipe is, quite literally, rice and water—even the DIY averse may want to try their hand at making the treatment at home.

Anisa Sojka’s Rice Water Hair Treatment Recipe

*Sojka recommends using the treatment once a week

 • 1 cup basmati rice x 3 cups water

Making the Treatment

 • Wash the rice, then combine fresh water and rice.
 • For five to 10 minutes, rub the rice to ensure all the nutrients seep into the water.
 • Sift rice water into a pot. Add an orange peel for a more pleasant smell.
 • On low heat, warm up the rice water over the stove for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally. (Don’t let it boil.)
 • Pour water (with peels) into a container to cool, then place it in a dark space for two to three days to ferment.

How to Use Rice Water on Hair

 • After fermenting, shake the starchy mixture and add it to a spray bottle. (Any remaining rice water can be refrigerated in the fridge for up to one week.)
 • Apply generously all over the scalp and hair.
 • Gently but thoroughly massage for about one minute. Sojka recommends avoiding using your nails.
 • Leave in the treatment for one to three hours. (Leave it in for at least 20 minutes if you’re pressed for time.)
 • In the shower, pour the remaining rice water over your hair and massage for about one minute.
 • Shampoo and condition as normal.

One note: While it is a super simple recipe, the treatment does require a bit of planning. Fortunately, several great beauty brands (including Kiehl’s, OUAI, and Mielle Organics) have incorporated a healthy dose of rice water into their products if you prefer to cut out the measuring and mess.

Hair trends are forever changing. Today it’s curtain bangs and middle parts, tomorrow could see the resurgence of the crimp. But one hair quality that always stays en vogue: shiny hair. There’s a reason gorgeous, glossy locks cascading just so, remain the focal point of many shampoo commercials. But the gleaming mane seen on screen is allusive for many, so we polled three top stylists—Kathleen Riley, Sienree Du, and Ricky Mota—to discover the very best products for shiny hair. From mists and masks to pro-approved flat irons, they offered their favorites and expert tips for optimal sleekness.

But before we get to the products, we want to ensure we’re achieving health-looking locks from the inside out, so we tapped celebrity chef and certified nutritionist, Serena Poon. “The health of your hair is going to be an indication of what is happening inside of your body,” she says. On the food front, the entrepreneur recommends chia seeds (a great source of protein and fatty omega-3 acids), sunflower seeds (rich in biotin), sweet potatoes (packed with biotin), and mangos (high in vitamin C). Both mangos and sweet potatoes also feature beta-carotene, which our bodies transform into sebum-supporting vitamin A. And of course, hydration is also key for healthy strands.

For an extra interior shine boost, seek out trusted supplements for vitamin C, DHA, biotin, and vitamin D (an important nutrient for hair health that actually cannot be consumed through food). “Hair loss can be a symptom of a vitamin deficiency or a nutrient surplus,” Poon adds. “So, if your hair is feeling dull, it could be possible that you have a deficiency or are overdoing one of your supplements. I like to recommend that people get their vitamin levels checked so that we can see exactly where the nutritional holes lie.”

Tackle thinning at the root!

The post A Hairstylist Shares the 13 Best Hair Serums to Help Thicken and Boost Growth appeared first on Camille Styles.

]]>

Aesthetically speaking, few things are as alarming as noticing that your hair is starting to thin. Regardless of the root cause, a drastic change of appearance can make your self-esteem take a hit and cause some serious stress—which can in turn make the problem worse. As with most things, the sooner you tackle an issue, the easier it is to take care of, which is why I spoke to a hairstylist about the best thickening hair serums to help.

Personally, I suffer from a shocking amount of hair loss when I’m under extreme stress. Life changes such as a cross-country move, a difficult breakup, and grieving a loved one have resulted in losing large clumps of hair for months at a time. Every time I see the physical manifestation of stress I’m visually reminded how much the inside affects our outside—they’re all interconnected. And while stress can be common cause of hair loss, it’s not the only reason someone may need help in the hair thickening department.

As Fox and Jane hairstylist, Betsy Duggan explains, there are many causes for hair loss. They can be as simple and as common as the natural aging process or be the result of a more serious medical issue. She recommends seeing a dermatologist if you notice hair falling out or shedding on your pillowcase in large clumps. Aside from taking supplements, indulging in a scalp massage, and cutting out heat styling, she recommends using a thickening hair serum to help tackle the issue.

Causes of hair thinning and loss include:

 • Genetics
 • Being postpartum
 • Overly processed and damaged hair
 • Vitamin deficiency
 • Stress/mental health issues
 • Natural aging process
 • Lack of sleep
 • Hormonal shifts
 • Scalp issues

What is a hair serum?

You’ve probably seen a lot of smoothing, shine-inducing serums at your local drugstore and Sephora. While these are great for frizzy hair and heat protection, they don’t actively help to thicken the hair. In fact, many do the opposite by weighing it down and can even contribute to hair loss if you put too much on your tresses. Yikes!

Duggan shares that the best thickening hair serums are less about immediate aesthetic results and more about strengthening and protecting the hair, and supporting thickness long-term. Some of them plump the hair strands and help to add volume to make the hair look thick and full, while others are full of nutrients and antioxidants to help promote hair growth. Many work in tandem to achieve both kinds of results, ideally these are the ones you should be purchasing.

Beauty from the inside out.

The post Finally, a Nutritionist Shares the Best Hair Growth Vitamins for Longer, Stronger, Thicker Locks appeared first on Camille Styles.

]]>

Often overlooked, hair health is one of the primary ways our bodies signal that something could be off. Before hopping back to your inbox or scrolling down to the best hair growth vitamins, take a second to think about your locks. Does your hair feel nourished or dull? How would you describe the state of your scalp? What about your hairline? Is your scalp dry? Hair thinning? As you answer these questions, keep in mind that everything from genetics and hormonal imbalances (hello, postpartum!) to stress and nutritional deficiencies can compromise your hair.

It’s also important to remember that we shed an average of 80-100 hairs every day. Additionally, during certain times of the year, we may notice an increase in shedding, especially in the coming fall months. This common phenomenon is known as seasonal shedding. At any rate, changes in your hair could indicate nutrition or lifestyle issues. A dry scalp, for example, could mean you aren’t getting enough healthy fats in your diet. Similarly, thinning hair could be caused by stress or a lack of protein on your plate.

What causes hair loss?

Without a doubt, you probably think about your hair on a daily basis. You’re either fretting over a bad hair day, in the midst of growing longer, stronger hair, or are considering an end-of-summer chop. Maybe, you’re stressing over recent hair loss. If that’s the case, you might be missing clues that your hair is revealing about your health. After all, research shows that changes in your hair’s look, texture, thickness, etc. can be signs of underlying health conditions. Before jumping to any conclusions, chat with your doctor about any changes you’ve noticed.

In terms of what causes hair loss, along with other hair conditions, it varies. For example, hair thinning could be tied to a thyroid disease. In essence, hypothyroidism can cause hair shedding, as well as a change in hair appearance. Anemia, another health condition, can be a sign of low iron stores, thus impacting hair health. And while it’s not completely understood why low iron causes hair loss, iron is critical for many biological reactions. From a nutrition standpoint, diet matters. Certain foods—like avocados, eggs, lentils, salmon, and seaweed—can support your hair’s luminosity, strength, and thickness.

Postpartum Hair Loss

Common for many mothers, the postpartum time period is often correlated with hair loss. During pregnancy, the body experiences soaring estrogen and progesterone, which causes hair to remain in an ongoing stage of growth. As hormones level out in the months following childbirth, changes in hair thickness can occur.

Rest assured that postpartum hair loss is both normal and temporary. It’s actually a change that is unrelated to breastfeeding. Most women will return to their usual hair growth cycle between 6-12 months after giving birth. If you’re a new mom and are noticing dramatic hair loss, that’s also common. If you have any concerns, discuss them with your doctor. Otherwise, continue to eat nutrient-dense foods, incorporate self-care when possible, and continue taking your prenatal vitamin.

Hair Wellness Begins on the Inside

If take one thing from this article, make it this: hair wellness starts internally. Yes, products can transform your hair, revitalize your locks, and re-introduce a healthy scalp, but nothing compares to a diet rich in key vitamins and nutrients. Unfortunately, the Standard American Diet (SAD) lacks essential nutrients—but armed with an understanding that eating whole, minimally processed foods is ideal, you’re on your way to establishing healthy locks. And while eating foods that promote hair growth is important, adding a daily supplement will further support your hair growth goals.

Important Ingredients in Hair Growth Supplements

The right hair growth vitamins can help nourish your hair from the inside out, resulting in a faster growth rate and thicker, more nourished strands. An effective supplement can improve the length and condition of your hair, and as an added bonus, it can also improve your nails and skin.

When it comes to choosing the best hair growth supplement, you want to look for these key ingredients:

Vitamin A

A fat-soluble vitamin, vitamin A is in the same class as retinoids—a common ingredient in many beauty creams. Vitamin A is necessary for cell growth, and because hair has some of the most quickly replicating cells in the body, hair needs adequate levels of vitamin A.

B Vitamins

Vitamin B6, B7, and B12 are especially important for hair health. Biotin is a common B vitamin and probably one of the most popular supplements for healthy hair. In fact, not getting enough B vitamins can cause hair loss. Vitamin B12 deficiency has also been linked to hair loss and may be involved in the premature greying of hair.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that helps protect against free radicals, and free radical damage can block hair growth. Additionally, our bodies need vitamin C to create collagen (a protein). Collagen is an important part of hair structure.

Vitamin E

Like vitamin C, vitamin E is a potent antioxidant. Vitamin E helps block free radicals at the hair follicle level, potentially helping maintain healthy locks in the long run.

Iron

Given that adequate iron levels are necessary for hemoglobin production, and hemoglobin is required to deliver oxygen to your hair follicle cells, iron is crucial for hair health.

Zinc

Research shows that zinc is a potential inhibitor of hair follicle regression, meaning that it plays a role in hair health. Zinc is involved in protein synthesis and cell division, two components of hair growth.

Protein

Last but not least, because hair is made almost entirely of protein, it’s an important ingredient in your daily supplement and/or diet.

Let’s Talk About Biotin

First of all—what is it? Biotin is one of the B complex vitamins. It helps convert food into energy. Like other B vitamins, biotin is water-soluble, so any extra biotin you consume will simply pass through your body when you urinate. Between 30-100 mcg per day of biotin is recommended. Most people get the daily recommended amount of biotin from eating a healthy diet (it’s present in eggs, milk, bananas, etc.), but adding a biotin supplement has no known toxicity symptoms associated with supplementing too much.

While the National Institutes of Health reports that there is still insufficient evidence to provide the efficacy of a biotin supplement, signs of biotin deficiency include hair loss, skin rashes, brittle nails, etc. The jury may still be out about its ability to deliver scientifically-proven results, but reviews on popular biotin supplements say otherwise. More on that, below.

At any rate, biotin is considered harmless if you take more than the RDA. If you notice more breakouts than usual after taking high doses of biotin, you may want to scale back. There isn’t a proven link between biotin and acne breakouts, but this micronutrient can reduce your body’s absorption of other nutrients (including ones that naturally help your body combat acne).

Toxic Ingredients to Avoid in Hair Supplements

When it comes to beauty, non-toxic (when possible!) is the way to go, and organic is always a plus. Luckily, there are a variety of clean supplements that help restore hair strength and luminosity on the market. You can find a full list of ingredients to avoid here, but these are a few harmful offenders:

 • Sulfates (cost-effective cleansing agents)
 • Parabens (preservatives)
 • Denatured alcohols (drying to the scalp)
 • Synthetic fragrances (an array of potential irritants hidden in artificially-fragranced formulas)
 • Formaldehyde (currently under investigation for potential safety concerns)

How to Choose the Best Supplement for Hair Growth

When it comes to choosing the most optimal hair growth supplement, you want to look for clinically-backed products that have been tested for efficacy and quality. Keep in mind that most supplements take at least three months in order to build up stores of various vitamins, minerals, and compounds, so having patience is key.

Before buying a hair growth supplement, chat with your doctor or dermatologist. Get tested for any potential nutrient deficiencies and make sure you choose a supplement that won’t cause allergies or other adverse effects. Furthermore, read all labels and steer clear of non-natural or chemical ingredients. Ideally, the ingredients are plant-based and come from organic sources.
